Pink Floyd's album ANIMALS is a critique of capitalism. It's their reaction to George Orwell's book "Animal Farm", that is a critique of communism. The 3 main songs of the album are in order: "Dogs" that represent corporations and business people, described as backstabbing sociopathic egoists. "Pigs" who represent politicians and politics, described as complete fakes. "Sheep" -> us, the common people, described as docile, compliant fools, meek and obedient. Though in the end the sheep rebel against their overlords and kill them. (Happens in the song "Sheep".) Those three songs are bookended by the two parts of the short ballad "Pigs on a Wing (Part 1 & 2)", which is about people should actually look out and care for each other, and thus works as the positive, optimistic counterpoint to the other 3 angry songs on the album.
Animal Farm isn't a critique of Communism, its a critique/allegory for Stalin's regime specifically. Orwell himself was a socialist who fought with Marxist rebels in Spain in the 1930's and saw firsthand how Stalin betrayed them.
@@ThisOldHat Yes, you are right! Calling it just a critique of communism is rather superficial. However I just wanted to keep it short and not write an essay about the themes and motifs in Animal Farm under a reaction video to a PF song on youtube. :) But I appreciate your comment!
@@porflepopnecker4376 It's okay, as long as you remember that Orwell made a clear distinction between socialism and communism. He kept admiring the former throughout his life, but came to fear and loathe the latter (mainly through his experiences in Spain in the 30's).
Pink, this was a great reaction! Thank you. I'd like to address something you said. You stated that this wouldn't be a go to song for you. You're right on the mark, but you've got to understand something. Back in the day, it was albums, not singles. That's the thing: the critique about the view of "success" in capitalism, and what it takes to succeed, and what it looks like is even MORE needed today than it was even back then. Roger wrote this pre-Reagan, pre-Thatcher (you want to know what he thought about Thatcher, listen to his albums in the 80's and the Final Cut), and he knew what it was about. He knew what that kind of selfish greed, that fetishization of success no matter the cost, would lead to.

I worked in the dog eat dog business world until I retired. It sucked! The older you get the more you can relate to this song! This is in my top 5 PF songs along with Time, Comfortably Numb, Echoes, Shine On.
YESSSSSSSSSS finally! - Now that you've done dogs, you HAVE to do the rest of the album. Dark Side of the Moon is one of the greatest albums ever written, however, Animals is Pink Floyds greatest album. Always so overlooked due to the long songs. Pigs, Dogs and Sheep are 3 categories of people in the world based on the novel Animal Farm. In each one, they take you through what it feels like to be one of those people, and how the others see you. In short, Pigs are the politicians, CEOs etc. Dogs are the salesmen who are trying to climb the endless ladder, and sheep are the people who are trodden upon.
Roger's lyrics and David's guitar work equals brilliance. I loved when they shared lead vocals too like in "Hey You" and "Comfortably Numb." David has that strong melodic voice and Roger's voice had attitude and edge.
This is one my favorite Pink Floyd songs, the lyrics and guitar are insane. But sadly a lot of people have never this before lol. Thanks for doing a reaction video!
This is the best song they ever wrote IMO. I recommend Sheep from the same album, it's also classic. Floyd were great commentators on the 'human condition' and able to make such uplifting music out of dark ideas and themes.
I'm thinking of how appropriate that applies to our current Great Leader. And then when they turn their backs on him, how quickly he stabs them in the back. So true.

I'm glad you made it through. They do not sugar coat. They were just singing reality for a lot of people, no matter which of that exchange your on. Sometime in your life, you'll have to deal with someone just like that. Your reaction makes me like you right off the bat. 🎶
Probably my favorite Pink Floyd album.....or the one I find myself returning to most often. For the sound alone. First heard it in 1977, and never even paid attention to the lyrics. I don't think I ever even saw the lyrics until sometime in the early 2000s. Sadly....they only did Dogs, Pigs & Sheep. If only they would have thrown in some Horses, Chickens & Cows.....we COULD have had a DOUBLE-album.
"Dogs" (originally composed as "You've Got to Be Crazy") is a song by English progressive rock band Pink Floyd, released on the album Animals in 1977. This song was one of several to be considered for the band's "best of" album Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd. Fitting into the album's Orwellian concept of comparing human behavior to various animals, "Dogs" concentrates on the aggressive, ruthlessly competitive world of business, describing a high-powered businessman. The first two verses detail his predatory nature - outwardly charming and respectable with his "club tie and a firm handshake, a certain look in the eye and an easy smile", while behind this facade he lies waiting "to pick out the easy meat...to strike when the moment is right", and to stab those who trust him in the back. Subsequent verses portray the emptiness of his existence catching up to him as he grows older, retiring to the south rich but unloved: "just another sad old man, all alone and dying of cancer", and drowning under the weight of a metaphorical stone. The final verse explores a number of aspects of business life and how it compares to dogs, for example taking chances and being "trained not to spit in the fan", losing their individuality ("broken by trained personnel"), obeying their superiors ("fitted with collar and chain"), being rewarded for good behaviour ("given a pat on the back" [Incorrectly "given a seat in the stand" in original LP liner notes, corrected for CD liner notes!]), working harder than the other workers ("breaking away from the pack") and getting to know everyone but spending less time with family ("only a stranger at home"). Recommended by a friend of Roger Waters named Joel Eaves, this line was personal to him as he was split from his family at infancy, being "broken away", as he put it. He later joined the Air Force squadron known as "Wolfpack", which directly inspired the implementation of this line. Every line of this verse begins with the words "Who was", which prompted comparison to Allen Ginsberg's poem "Howl". However, Waters has denied the Ginsberg poem was any influence on his lyrics. Instead, these lines can be seen as subordinate clauses to the lyric line that precedes them ("And you believe at heart everyone's a killer/Who was born in a house full of pain/Who was [etc.]").
I'll suggest an earlier album . Ummagumma. The whole album. But the stand out song for me is the last song which coincidentally is quite possibly the longest song title in existence. "Several Species of Small Furry Animals, Gathered together in a cave and Grooving with a Pic" Yes that is the actual song title. I love all of the background noises and fills throughout the entire album. Well worth the time.
Another interesting fact about ummagumma... Each band member produced one side of each 4 side's(double album) Including David Gilmours "Narrow Way" in which he wrote and plays every instrument and sings.... It was the first song he produced and recorded.
@@jimmyfortrue3741 With all due respect, I feel I must correct you. The album is indeed 4 sides, but the first 2 sides are live performances from mid 1969. The remaining 2 sides are the studio ones that were divided between the 4 members: Richard Wright getting the first 4 songs on side 3, Roger Waters the 5th and 6th on side 3, David Gilmour's wonderful 3-part piece occupying the first half of side 4 and Nick Mason's contribution filling out the rest. Peace.

Truly Amazing, its hard to sound unique but no one sounds like Pink Floyd and in every department from the lyrics to the instrumentals, the bands musicianship to the production values every time the grade is A+.

After listening to your feedback. I was right. I would venture to say that, for Pink Floyd lovers, and those that simply love good sound, that it is not just about the compacting of good lyrics, it's about the "music"... the sounds and the composition. Its what's separates musical genius from a nice sounding ditty.

Crazy Harmony? Or inevitable... Besides, not everyone knows when they're being manipulated.
You wouldn't be posting using any of the fruits of capitalism, and the innovation it brings, would you?
wasn't it what the lefties like Roger Waters were asking for? deregulation? just goes to show that progressivism is not the solution for everything
I still remember in recent times when Uber appeared in the block, taxi unions resisted it as much as they could and we all thought that taxis were overpriced and offered a terrible service... now jump to present day and Uber has turned into a major source of worker exploitation and abusive working conditions, low salaries... all of us including myself were fooled by the illusion of "freedom"
The album is inspired by the book "Animal Farm" by George Orwell.
It is beautiful to watch a young person listen to and appreciate the music I grew up on. I could watch it all day long. Stay cool and inquisitive
This is such an amazing album, and this song in particular is probably my favorite Pink Floyd song. When I was 16, Sheep was my favorite song off of this album, because it has more "punch". But through the years this has become my favorite.
And you are beautiful.
Such a smart and classy lady. Thank you for appreciating the Floyd. You rock!🙂
I've watched several "so and so reacts" channels, and yours is my fave. You put effort into your analysis, your voice is soothing, your reactions aren't over the top and carry the authenticity that goes way beyond small talk. You have such a genuineness about you, I hope this youtube channel thing turns out to be more rewarding than you ever thought it could be. By the depth of your reactions so far, it seems that way. Much love, and thanks.
I’m glad you closed your eyes and just “felt” this song
Boba Fett not a song to put on at a party, it’s an album to be listened to in one sitting. Just like the rest of Floyd in the Waters era.
Meddle through the Wall are my favorites, but Animals is the absolute rawest Pink Floyd you can get
THAT'S WHYYYYY YOU SHOULD DO FULL FLOYD ALBUMS, THEY'RE ALLLLL CONCEPTS! DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, WISH YOU WERE HERE, ANIMALS, ETC! ;-) :)
This album as well as a few others mentallly takes me on a small light journey & moves you around to some places you feel like you need to be & gently puts you back where you are. -
I worked in the dog eat dog business world until I retired.
Just like a movie. Exactly. It's the continuously evolving music, a symphony.
Roger's lyrics and David's guitar work equals brilliance. I loved when they shared lead vocals too like in "Hey You" and "Comfortably Numb." David has that strong melodic voice and Roger's voice had attitude and edge.
Floyd rules. My Christmas music this year. Animals is pure genius.Never could i get tired of it
She got mind blown with the lyrics.
Hey you found my #1 album of all time. When you want to fill space by listening to a whole album, this works every time.
This is one my favorite Pink Floyd songs, the lyrics and guitar are insane. But sadly a lot of people have never this before lol. Thanks for doing a reaction video!
Amazing!!! An epic work of Art!! True Pink Floyd
This album seems like it was written for exactly what is going on in this country today. Especially "Pigs". Another good one, Pink!
NO BACKUP SINGERS. NO SAX. JUST THE FOUR OF THEM ALONE. STRIPPED DOWN AND CREATING. REAL FLOYD MUSIC.
no fucking sax... EVER... please
LOL
Finally I’ve been waiting for this 💯
my favorite Floyd song
Who else has to listen to at least the beginning of PIGS after listening to DOGS.
I can never listen to just “a” song on this album. I have to listen all the way through. Vinyl and headphones preferred.
This is the best song they ever wrote IMO. I recommend Sheep from the same album, it's also classic. Floyd were great commentators on the 'human condition' and able to make such uplifting music out of dark ideas and themes.
Sheep’s is better
I like watching you because you are authentic, real and are sensitive to feelings and your surroundings like I am. ty
Hey Pink Metal! Just discovered your channel
Pink Floyd is an experience best heard through
headphones. They are masters of their crafts.
"You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to"
I'm thinking of how appropriate that applies to our current Great Leader. And then when they turn their backs on him, how quickly he stabs them in the back. So true.
@@rondohunter8966 It applies to the former, and the one before, and the one before just as much.
@@rondohunter8966 Jay Weyland
its not only your great leader (your words) in reality how many people would you honestly trust when the majority of people from all walks of life are out for themselves and very easily lie to your face to convince you of something (even if you see it for yourself ) that you didnt see it hear it or read it ........... and quite honestly career politicians are the worst at it
..........its people on the street on the tv in newspapers that only tell you half the story at most and if you dont check for yourself the whole story you will never know the whole truth
The Nile song.just enjoy British humour dudes? Or dude and dudette?don't want to start off by pissing off your gender, you American friend xb
Best floyd track ever
Never gets old
@PinkMetalHead.
Big respect.
I really like what you are doing.
You listen with an openness. You grasp the depth of the music.
You keep being you!
Outstanding song, outstanding reaction. You are a breath of fresh air. Thank you!
This songs message will still be revelant tomorrow, next month, next year and also the future
Just as Sound of Silsnce
Its all the future..
Same with 'time' from dark side.
Favorite Pink Floyd song along with Shine on You Crazy Diamond. So good! This album is highly underrated and def one of their best.
Your intelligence and insight is way beyond your years. Spot on with regard to the instrumentation.
Fantastic song, album, tour (1st PF Show), band! Welcome to our world.
Glad to see you doing more Pink Floyd! Thanks!
I'll suggest an earlier album . Ummagumma. The whole album. But the stand out song for me is the last song which coincidentally is quite possibly the longest song title in existence.
"Several Species of Small Furry Animals, Gathered together in a cave and Grooving with a Pic"
Yes that is the actual song title. I love all of the background noises and fills throughout the entire album. Well worth the time.
Cats have a strange reaction to that song played at high volume.
Another interesting fact about ummagumma... Each band member produced one side of each 4 side's(double album)
Including David Gilmours "Narrow Way" in which he wrote and plays every instrument and sings....
Peace.
@@jeffmcdonald5901 thanks.... Yeah you're right... It's been many years since I played through the whole copy at once... Probably about forty.. And my memory isn't what it used to be.
That's not a very good album imo. In fact I'd say it's their worst. I listened to it once. Never bothered listening to it again.
Can only be truly appreciated as part of the whole album.
Free Four is another great Pink Floyd song, and easily one of their darkest. If I may recommend it...
love the reaction to this one in particular The barking dog from the late great Richard Wright synthesizer David's killer guitar the great lyrics..
that interlude for about six minutes of just awesome synthesizer space out..
_you've got to be trusted by the people that you lied to so that when they turn their backs on you you get the chance to put the knife in_
1978 now today it sounds like a certain group of folks lol
“A balloon squeezing out of air”, I love that!
"I've got all this imagery in my head..."
Bingo! You get it.
My favourite Pink Floyd song. Thank you PinkMetalHead for listening to it
Take away the vocals, and this has a jazz-rock fusion vibe.
I'd have never guessed Pink Floyd...!!
Rreally!? Then you haven't listened. Richard Wright used a lot of jazzy interludes as did Gilmour.
It was a take on the book animal farm, the whole album. I first heard this some 45 years ago and for me it is a go to song, it's brings me down to earth. It's the greatest song ever written, maybe not the best, prettiest, or hyped song, just the greatest, because it is life, and it is the world, and it is reality. Also it's a pretty damn good song as far as musically
Truly Amazing, its hard to sound unique but no one sounds like Pink Floyd and in every department from the lyrics to the instrumentals, the bands musicianship to the production values every time the grade is A+.
I remember thinking omg the first time I heard "After a while you can work on points for style..." That whole stanza ending with "...stick the knife in" folllowed by wtf when the guitar kicked in. I haven't watched many reactions lately, but when I saw this I had to see your reaction.
This song never loses it's feeling. This has always been my favorite. It was great live! Another song that hits me is Roger Water/ Perfect Sense I & II. Please give that a listen.
that stone keeps echoing. in Dogs, again in Sheep, and then 2 years later in Hey You on The Wall!
Floyd are the greatest band ever, they have got me through the best and worst times in my 44years. Check out van Morrison into the mystic
This is the greatest song of all time
Yes
It’s up there, the groove on this album is amazing
Battersey power station in London is next to Battersey dogs home a very lager home for dogs, this is why you hear them bark,
Also see the flying pig, from the expression pigs, wil fly meaning if you said this to someone you are calling them a lier, they rep[ly"pigs will fly"
Nice! Yes, having the lyrics in front of you is very useful with this great band.
What an album! I saw a "Classic Albums Live" show years ago that actually brought a dog onstage and would bark on command!
I've been slacking since I was introduced to Smule. lol Great video, Pink!! 🤘🤘
