  • An analysis of a dogfight I had in multiplayer the other day versus a very capable opponent in an F-5E. I try and illustrate the importance of energy management and patience in a fight where I started on the defensive, but managed to score a victory in the end.

This is a very important lesson everyone needs to learn. It goes against our base instincts of harder pulling is better, but as the video demonstrates its the key to almost every single dogfight in every single aircraft. Earlier aircraft are particularly vulnerable to the mentality, famously the Mig-21 will AoA too hard and bleed speed but so will the Viggen, for example. Indeed the Viggen is incredible at dogfighting and able to retain a sustained G load comparable to the F-15, Su-27 and the like (in DCS), but because people kill their energy right from the start the assumption is that the Viggen is a second tier dogfighter. The moral of the story, energy management is the underlying principle of modern dogfighting so its foolish to ignore it.

whats a good sustained turn speed for the Mig 21? If you have it. I have been reading keep your speed up but I haven't found actual numbers

Hey, long time since you made this, but this was a really interesting video. Have you considered also including the full video of the vectoring in these cases in order to provide newer players the understanding of how much information you had, against what you didn't have?

Great video sport! Well explained too. Just wondering if you got the chance to talk with dutt and see why he opened up like that when he was behind the F5 as he almost perfectly "drifted" between both of you. At 2:50 seems to me like he has a perfect solution.

Nice! Slow and steady wins the race! I mean... in this case you were technically faster but... you know what I mean! :)

This is still my biggest failing. Flying an F-16 against a MiG-21 I am constantly making it way too difficult on myself because I pull too hard and get too slow and then it’s a long way to get back to a good speed.

Speed is life. Fly it in free flight, and get a feel for how it turns. Just bear in mind the FM of the F-16 is total garbage, doesn't represent the actual aircraft at all, and even real F-16 pilots can't fly it properly. So when that changes you are going to have to relearn it.

Can anyone give me some tips on how to properly dogfight with the 21bis? There's not much information online. Should I stay high and fast or keep to the ground. Is it better to conserve my energy and rate fight especially when I'm low or just go pure AOA maybe at higher altitudes, or maybe a mix of both? There aren't any good videos on UA-cam giving proper MiG-21bis dogfighting guides so any information would be much appreciated.

I wish there was a better answer than "well, it depends," but unfortunately its all dependent on what your enemy is doing. I find that when you're defensive BFM, pulling AOA can help you extend or reverse a fight, but it takes time to regain that energy - vs the F-5 unless you get a snapshot off, its putting you at a distinct disadvantage. For me, I win the majority of my fights by forcing a rate fight, and waiting for the other guy to make a mistake - if they try and extend, you can run them down; if they try and get slow, you just take it vertical, build a little bit of that space and come down on top of them for the kill. I'll be posting an F-16 vs J-11 example of the latter sometime soon.

You flew well, but he never should have allowed you to turn the tables there. He had about as good a weapons solution as you could wish for at the merge, and failed to kill you when he had the opportunity.

Monkey, you’re absolutely right! In the first half-turn where I originally paused the tacview, he was right at his corner speed and sliding in on my 6. Had he unloaded the jet, switched to lag pursuit, he could have easily stayed with me and probably scored a kill.

MiG-21 in DCS has wrong performance, unrealistic behavior and wrong missiles characteristics - its proved many times and its so obvious when you fight against it! This fight would have been different if Mig-21 had been realistic.
