The only person in America who thought the Polamalu play was not an interception just happened to be the frickin' referee. Most stunning call I've ever seen in an NFL game.
Polamalu rolled on that ground three or four times with the ball firmly controlled, and fumbles but picks the ball up, and it's an incomplete pass. I have seen countless games where a defensive player rolled once, dropping the ball, and refs call it an interception. lol! The refs in that playoff game did their best to see the Steelers lose, but the Steelers had other ambitions.
@@roberthanief3408 I can never get over calling them Indianapolis. I mean if they still were the Baltimore Colts, they would be in the AFC north division. Ravens should be in south, and Indianapolis should be in AFC north. Your lifetime must not include 1995, and the loss to the Steelers in the epic failed Hail Mary game with Harbaugh. Better yet, the 3rd Super Bowl guarantee prediction by Namath is crushing to most Colt fans. But there are a lot of bright spots as well. Colts have won a few Super Bowls as Baltimore, and Indianapolis. That will always dull the pain. The fumble by Bettis was your second gift. Steelers only gifts were the tackle by #7 saving a TD, and the missed FG at the end. You see Bettis wiping his brow after that, and with good reason! Steelers vs Colts playoff games have been nothing but epic. Except the blowout game in the 70s.
@@tomodonovan5931 I appreciate all that. The 1995 game was heartbreaking too, but the 2006 one was worse because I thought we had the best team in the league. In 1995 I was just excited the Colts were playing in that game at all, and we all knew they had no shot of beating the Cowboys.
What makes it a terrible call isnt the fact that it was a clear interception (because it really wasnt that clear). What makes it terrible is that you need irrefutable evidence to reverse a call. I dont see how this was irrefutable at all. I think this is one of those scenarios where it wasnt necessarily clear either way, so you have to stick with the original call on the field. If it had been originally called incomplete, then it shouldve remained incomplete. However, it was originally called an interception, so I think it shouldve remained an interception. Really could've been called either way and wasnt very clear, so idk why they overturned it.
I know right, "He lost possession while getting off the ground" so it would've been a pick if he'd have just stayed down and not tried to stand up with the ball? Then that's called a FUMBLE... by the refs explanation, polamalu caught it, rolled around WITH possession, then FUMBLED it while getting back up and recovered his own fumble: steelers ball
For all the idiots who cry" Big Ben won his first Super Bowl with the worst passer rating in SB history" they forget how he played AT Cincy, AT Indy and AT Denver to get to that SB, 7tds and only 1 INT and 1 rather important tackle.
Took Ben three times to get everything down. In 2004, he played great in the regular season but melted down in the playoffs. In 2005 he played great in the playoffs but melted down in the Super Bowl. The next time he got to the Super Bowl he was fine. Just needed a chance to adjust to the higher pressure.
Balderdash. Kimo wasn't trying to hurt Palmer on that play, you could see it in his reaction. The fact that Palmer got hurt so badly shook him up so much he was pretty much useless the rest of the game.
You can talk about dude cuts in bla bla bla all you want but in the history of football that's the greatest tackle by a quarterback and a game saver as this was supposed to be for Bettis but he was trying to give the game away as well so the Steelers in one game Had to beat the colts the referee and and old teammate to win
Danilo Jovović I agree Danilo. Troy was a playmaker. he intimidated opposing qbs. Nobody on the Steelers current defense, not even James Harrison is intimidating, not anymore.
Still can't believe they stole that INT from Troy, one of the worst calls in NFL history. Ben saving Bettis' fumble is epic, almost a terrible end to an amazing career, might have been enough to keep him out of the HoF despite being top 10 all time.
@forgiato Telly Nah, you might be able to say he never burned as bright as some on the short term, but better bright and for ages than blinding for a moment. One of the most consistent RB careers of all time, only slipping, of course, near the end. And literally finished 6th all time, 1,000 yards in 8 of his first 9 seasons, you can count on one hand the amount of players with more 1,000 yard seasons. And until his last years, when Ben emerged, that was with stacked boxes with him being the focal point.
He blew it? I saw a TD drive and 2 point conversion after that. And then a kicker missing an easy FG to tie the game. Missing is an understatement for that kick.
renangms To not score any points at home for the first 45 minutes of the game? Without the bad call on the Polamalu interception and the Bettis fumble there is no FG attempt. 4th Quarter drive where the Colts run 4 plays for -16 yards. That sure is clutch. 2nd and 2 at the Steeler 28 - need a few yards to make it a gimme FG. Instead manning tries to be the hero and throws it for the end zone where it is almost ANOTHER interception. 3rd and 2 - still needing only a few yards - Manning severely underthrows Wayne - Pitt drops another pick. Choke city.
Once again, you change the subject. Your comment was about what happened after the interception and I replied that the Colts scored 8 points and should'be been 11 if the kicker does not miss an easy FG. 11 points in 5 minutes seem pretty good to me. But then you want to talk about the rest of the game. Yes, he did not play well. The Steelers had a great D. If you didn't know they were the champions that year. If the kicker make the FG, the momentum would have shifted completed and the Colts would have a great chance to win the game in OT. Everybody would call his performance clutch. He was 6-9 with 85 yards after the Polamalu pick. He also threw a perfect pass in the 2 point conversion from the 7 yard line because there was a false start from the OL. But you focus on the sacks and a bad throw. If a 46 yard FG in a dome is not gimme for "the most accurate kicker in the history of the NFL", then what's a 45 yard FG in a blizzard? It's the greatest FG of all time. You do realize that if Vinatieri misses that kick, Brady is one and done in his 1st playoffs appearance. And let's not forget the FG againts the Rams in SB. On the other side, it was the 2nd FG missed by Vanderjagt in the playoffs. He also missed againt Miami in OT. 2 one and dones for Manning.
renangms "I" change the subject? You want to talk about the Dolphins-Colts Wild Card game? Where the only TD Manning could manage was an 18 yard drive after an interception? In OT the Colts had 1st down at the Miami 40 but couldn't get another first down, with Manning underthrowing Harrison before losing 2 yards on 2nd down. I'm not blaming Peyton for the loss but if you want to establish yourself as the greatest in anything those are the moments that define you. You want to talk about Brady in 2001? His first season as a starter? In the Wild Card game, in a driving blizzard with 7 degree wind chill, he dropped back 55 times (plus he ran 5 times for 16 yards and a TD.) Tom Brady has gone 4-2 in postseason games passing the ball 50+ times Every other quarterback in history has produced a combined record of 3-28. Peyton Manning you say? Never asked to pass 50 times in the playoffs. 3-9 when having to throw more than 40 passes in the postseason. The Patriots are 15-7 (.682) when Brady passes the ball 50 or more times, including the postseason. Every other team in modern NFL history (since 1960) has combined to go 100-386-6 (.209) in this situation. The Brady Patriots have singularly won 13 percent of all the 50-attempt victories during the past 55 years of professional football. Brady and the Patriots, however, are utterly unique in their ability to win these games: Brady is the career leader in 50-attempt games (22), 50-attempt wins (15) and 50-attempt winning percentage (.682). Nobody else is close. Peyton Manning is second with 17 50-attempt games, and he’s just 4-13 (.235) in those contests. Back to the Oakland game, Patriots down 13-3 in the 4thQ 12:30 left to play. Brady goes 9/9 on consecutive plays then scrambles in from the 6. In overtime, Brady goes 8/8 in leading New England to the Raider 5 yard-line for the game-winning FG. In that year's Super Bowl, 81 seconds left, ball on the N.E. 17 with only 1 TO. John Madden saying they should take a knee. Brady instead goes 5/7 to lead Patriots to the St. Louis 30 for the game winner in the biggest upset since SB III. Those are the moments that define a career. Manning = 3-8 in OT. Brady = 10-4 Game winning drives in the postseason: Manning 2 Brady 9
Seriously, are you really that incoherent? You just criticized Manning for not playing well in 3 quarters against the Steelers and ignoring the monster 4th that he had. But Brady threw for less than 100 yards in more than 58 minutes against the Rams and you want to focus on the last drive. Manning had the double yards that Brady had. DOUBLE. Manning lost the game because his kicker missed a 46-yard FG. Brady won the game because his kicker made a 48-yard FG. But by your logic, Brady was clutch against the Rams and Manning choked. It makes no sense. None. Yes, I want to talk about Brady first title. He got hurt in the 1st half in AFC champ. game on the road against a 14-2 team and the Patriots still won. And people want convince others that Brady never had great teams. It makes no sense. None. 1st down at the Miami 40? The drive started at Colts 18. Manning passed for 45 yards yards in that drive. But you want to focus that he didn't get a 1st down by 1 yard. He put his kicker in position to make a FG which he missed. M. Vanderjagt was considered the best kicker. And he failed twice in the playoffs, while Brady had one of the "clutchiest" kickers of all time. You clearly only focus on Manning's mistakes and ignores all the good things he does to put his teams in position to win. And for Brady is the opposite. You also ignores the defense, ST contributions during the game or in what you call game defining moments. Manning clearly has had less help, specially in the playoffs.
"Peyton was the Glory child" You have no memory whatsoever of 2005. BETTIS from week 1 was given the "Can he win it all" hype ever since Hines Ward cried for him in 2004 Patriot playoff Blowout. NFL Films and every show was pushing Bettis deserves a ring; nobody was pushing the 'Manning deserves it' story in 2005. Before America sickened of it in 2007; Brady and The Patriots were given worshipful media praise from 2001 scrappy underdog Blue Collar Team first 'Patriot Way' blah blah blah. Manning wasn't given that until the Broncos years and the Comeback Storyline.

The Steelers just weren’t gonna be denied for Jerome. So much fun to see a team come together and play at their best!
I disagree becasue it knocked out the best team that year. Super bowl XL was one of the worst ever becasue we got a mediocre Steelers team instead that really wasn't that good. Just goes to show you how weak the NFC was that year that such an average team can win a super bowl
Actually the game should have never gone to a FG Polamalu's interception that was overturne at 5 minutes to go, should have sealed the game. Instead it was taken away by a horrible ruling.

I remember a guy in Pittsburgh literally had a heart attack when Bettis fumbled that ball. I'm glad the Steelers won, it'd been bad if that blown INT call costed them the game. And this was back when beating Manning in a "big" game was considered something special instead of the norm.

Unbelievable how much the commentators seemed to be rooting for the Colts in this game. Every play they made they could barely contain their excitement.
You guys watch the same game?? I didn’t notice that bad at all. Even with Troy’s int called back they were both on the Steelers side. They are suppose to be impartial, but that is impossible, since their competitive days of playing. Boomer, and Cowher are always ribbing each other. That rivalry is still in the back of their minds. As a Colts fan, this was a tough one. Because the Colts wrapped up the playoffs seed so quickly (earlier December), they went an entire month between meaningful games and sat a lot of players. It really showed through the first 2 1/2 quarters and then finally got it going. They were lucky they even had a shot at the end. It was another missed opportunity.
You should be happy that they did not win. IF I were a Colts fan I would NOT want my team winning in that manner.....I AM talking about the Polamalu interception that was reversed ( what a steal! ). That steal in particular is the reason why so many people are turned off with football.
Jon Ramsey Im a Pats fan but I alwayd wonder, do you Steeler fans love your team how it is now or back during this time period being more about defense. I mean obviously you love your guys no matter what but do you like the offense era of Pittsburgh that we are in or the Defensive era back than
Mike Schumann I think the officiating crew was the same one who worked the Super Bowl later in the year. Ugh they were horrible. The game shouldn't have come down to a game tying field goal.
The Tuck Rule was appropriately called. The INT overturn was ridiculous as the rule book and initial call agree- it was an interception. Ref overturned it because he was on the take. Period.
Brett Reason the rule didn't even exist until that very moment so how was it "properly ruled they made it up on the spot.... properly ruled, HA that's rich

I will never forget this game. Was living less than an hour outside Indy at the time attending college. My sister (a big Manning fan) actually got to attend the game with friends, so I made them some Colts hats out of fleece. The week after the game I had to do a "how to" presentation for a speech class, so I planned to show the class how to make such hats. Gave the presentation showing all the steps to make a Colts hat - but at the end I took out the Steelers one I'd made for myself and put it on, simply ending my speech by commenting on how the basic hat could be designed in other ways too. The groans I got in response is a sound I will always cherish. ;) (Seriously, though, that fumble by Bettis and tackle by Ben took years off my life! LOL)
Dude everything from that time stamp onwards was just *PURE CHAOS!!* You cant take that out cuz if Vanderjagt makes the fg, goes OT anything coulda happen
Mike Vanderjagt went from being the NFLs most accurate kicker.....to missing this field goal and NEVER being the same ever again. He was haunted for the rest of his career.
I remember watching this live with my dad when I was 7. The game was so intense near the end I swear he was going to have a heart attack. When Vanderjagt missed he went crazy (due to joy). A fond memory.
Alvin Johnson Norwood's wasn't nearly as bad. It was a longer kick on grass, which he always had trouble with. Vanderjagt was the most accurate kicker in the league (or of all time, I can't remember) and was kicking on turf in a dome. He also had a history of missing big kicks. Norwood's kick only seems worse because of everything that happened for the Bills over the next few years.
clutchthepearls I guess it just that I see it as it is one thing to miss in the conference championship but a whole anther thing to miss in the Superbowl.
What a football team and what nostalgia. I miss me and my dad watching these games while he cooked spaghetti and meatballs and listening to him yell at the TV man what a game!!!
IIRC Vanderjagt got FIRED by the Colts for missing that FG. Even though he had an 87 percent success rate previous to that miss. Manning said "Kickers are not football players, they're Kickers".
And you were just a quarterback who went for it all trying to be a hero instead of going for more yardage for your kicker. You lost the the game Mr Quarterback. LOLOL

One of my favorite Steeler games ever. No one gave us a chance, Ben showed he wasn't just a product of good D and a run game, and the pass rush killed Manning who rarely got hit.
I know someone like Jeff Saturday who has alotta pride groans everytime he sees this game cuz he failed to protect his qb. Nothing much he coulda done at this point tho.

Steelers really did a good job disguising their blitzes in this game. Peyton did struggle a lot in the playoffs against exotic defensive schemes. Literally nobody was blocking Joey Porter there at the end.
Steelers were kicking the Colts ass 21-3 then got conservative. Got some luck at the end but the Steelers dominated this game for 3 quarters. Steelers had the good luck of playing Indy earlier that season. They knew how to stop manning this game.

Anyone else agree, the greatest tackle by a QB in the playoffs ever?
Money man
@@kevinbennett7528 Blessed tackle for sure. I never bet, bet on this game and won a good amount of money, thanks to the money man.
You can talk about dude cuts in bla bla bla all you want but in the history of football that's the greatest tackle by a quarterback and a game saver as this was supposed to be for Bettis but he was trying to give the game away as well so the Steelers in one game Had to beat the colts the referee and and old teammate to win
You mean Super Bowl
I miss Polamalu.
Danilo Jovović I agree Danilo. Troy was a playmaker. he intimidated opposing qbs. Nobody on the Steelers current defense, not even James Harrison is intimidating, not anymore.
Sean Brunson .... come on now
Sean Brunson James Harrison is still scary LOL
Poke Smot Matt Moore will say otherwise. He took a beating last Sunday.
Same Polamolu is like AWESOME he is so wicked quick and like what the heck he should have had a longer career.
Still can't believe they stole that INT from Troy, one of the worst calls in NFL history.
Ben saving Bettis' fumble is epic, almost a terrible end to an amazing career, might have been enough to keep him out of the HoF despite being top 10 all time.
Well he got in... 1st ballad.
Never did anything vs the Pats, lots of playoff games, but nothing.
@@pauldelucp687 Exactly, the Pats STUFFED his fat behind. Good running back, yes. HOFer, NO.
At least that call didn’t cost them the game.
Overturning Polamalu's interception with the Steelers up 21-10 and 5 minutes left was the NFL's attempt to get Manning a SB and he still blew it.
Manning = 3-8 in OT. Brady = 10-4
Game winning drives in the postseason: Manning 2 Brady 9
Polamalu got screwed it was a interception
Michael M True. It would have been a bigger margin had they given it to Troy.
At least the pats win when the refs hand it to them...colts still lost
which interception? he should have had 2 picks but they took them with away....
Well...his team still won the game. Does it really matter?
I'm a Dallas fan but I remember this incredible run by Pittsburgh, I'll never forget that Jerome Bettis fumble and Big Ben game saving tackle. Feels like it was yesterday

As a life long STEELERS fan it's easier on the nerves watching this game now than when it was live lol

Maybe. But if Ben didn't make the tackle, he'd still have gotten the ball back with about a minute to go and all three timeouts. Definitely not "game over" yet.
Actually the corner being a moron and not just running for the sideline is what saved the game for the Steelers..if he had ran for the far sideline ben wouldnt have stood a chance in hell of catching him and he could have just fallen down on the 20 in bounds

It was svage fr cuz Peyton got them 8pts from that drive to out Colts within a field goal fo the Steelers to send into OT if need be.

I remember a guy in Pittsburgh literally had a heart attack when Bettis fumbled that ball. I'm glad the Steelers won, it'd been bad if that blown INT call costed them the game. And this was back when beating Manning in a "big" game was considered something special instead of the norm.
For real. Makes the two Ls to Manning on the broncos even more embarrassing. Couldn’t even do it when it was norm.
It’s almost absurd how much the commentators were rooting for the Colts.

You guys watch the same game?? I didn’t notice that bad at all. Even with Troy’s int called back they were both on the Steelers side. @@mclohan Not Chris Collinsworth. He hates the Steelers. And
you do not have to be a rocket scientist to understand why! You
take a former Washington, or Eagles player calling a Cowboys,
Eagles game, or Commanders Vs Cowboys, and who will he be
rooting for? Certainly not Dallas. He is not programmed to do
so. They are suppose to be impartial, but that is impossible,
since their competitive days of playing. Boomer, and Cowher
are always ribbing each other. That rivalry is still in the back of
their minds. You simply can't let Collinsworth call a Steelers,

if the game was in Cincinnati, but not Pittsburgh. They would hit
him with about a dozen snowballs. And I am not kidding!
@@tomodonovan5931 we can agree to disagree brother. I just didn’t see it hear it like that at all, being a fan of neither team here. Peyton Manning is a huge playoff choke artist and this game is the biggest example.
And yall didnt have to go to Foxborough to face Tom Brady AND had homefield advantage in the RCA dome!!!
How the hell do u guys blow it???!😅

Ward was so synonymous with 3rd down clutch catches in his entire career especially in this playoffs run. What a game!
The overturn of the Polamalu interception was the worst call in the history of the NFL playoffs.
Mike Schumann I think the officiating crew was the same one who worked the Super Bowl later in the year. Ugh they were horrible. The game shouldn't have come down to a game tying field goal.
Mike Schumann I'm a steelers fan but it's not even close the tuck rule is the worst call in playoff history
Guillermo Ruelas the tuck rule had been in place since 1999, hell the Pats even got screwed by the tuck rule in 2001 against the Jets! "Never heard of the tuck rule before" lmao give me a break
The groans I got in response is a sound I will always cherish. ;)

No Scott Norwood's Wide right is.

I don't know if this is the greatest game in NFL history, but I will say, this is the greatest game I've ever watched. As a Steelers fan, I have never felt the same combination of joy, depression, fear, and exhilaration in a single game before or since. I was a senior in High School during this run. I remember hearing about that guy who had the heart attack while watching the game and I remember thinking I understood. What an experience this was.
Ben’s throw to heath in the beginning was so clean
I really miss coach cowher being on the sidelines for Pittsburgh...
Mike Tomlin hasnt done bad in 16seasons with a SB ring himself.
Has the success the Steelers are having in 2020 inspired anyone else to go back and relive some of these playoff games and Super Bowls?
Yes and it is still stressful watching the end even though I know the Steelers won! I remember the feeling of wanting to puke back in 2005 when Bettis fumbled 😂
@@parlet It really is somehow. I still get emotional every time I see the "Immaculate Interception" and Holmes catch in XLIII too no matter how many times I see it.
Kicking is basically a physiology test at the highest level. Everybody can put the ball through the uprights at 50 yards in practice 10/10 times, but when pressure builds and the game is on the line it is the hardest thing in football to stay focused.
You mean *PSYCHOLOGICAL TEST*
And Vanderjagt to that point never lost a home playoff field goal.
6/6 that season
14/14 career total.
Yep like the year,98/99? When Gary Anderson and the Vikings didn't miss a FG ALL year and then did in the NFC championship
The Steelers defensive line was so huge back then with Casey Hampton, Aaron Smith and Oelhoffen.
Hampton in his prime was a beast. I remember once seeing him tackle a running back for a loss without even touching the guy - he just threw the center into him and knocked him over.
@@mastick5106 If it's the same game I'm thinkin of, that happened in 09 or 10 i believe..But I saw Aaron Smith do that countless times. I even saw Smith split double teams frequently.
Oelhoffen was the one who got palmer out of the game in Cincinnati thanks man hi five to him I hated palmer
I can still vividly remember where I was, how I felt, what I was doing while watching this game. Was a sophomore in high school. The crazy switch from pure joy to shock and devastation to joy again in a short amount of time was insane. This was only my 3rd or so year really watching football and this is one of the games that made my “hobby” a true passion. Unreal game.
Btw, that WAS an interception and it still angers me seeing it be overturned.
This game took years off my life. Refs tried to take the game from the Steelers. Glad they won.
Indeed.
Robbed Polamalu's int then #78 shifts but ref nevr cslls false start on that same drive
Ben Roethlisberger is definitely a future Hall Of Fame Quarterback.
You can still feel how painful that missed Vanderjagt field goal was for Colts fans, and I'm a Steelers fan.
They won the Super Bowl the next year, so that pain didn’t last long.
@@xanzibar5374but w/o Vanderjagt on the team.
Thats y he said it like that
I was at this game. Was sitting in the endzone where Vanderjagt missed..it was incredible!!!
Big Ben can throw, knows how to read defense, has a great arm to tackle that's the Indianapolis colts.
Great game. Always loved this Steelers squad
One of the best Steelers teams in my opinion. A bunch of HOF, fan favorite Steelers on this team
They were good but the 70s Steelers team was the best Steeler team
@@cgg6450yea I'll say!!!!! 4 Superbowls in 6 years and no cheating, like Tom Shady, Bill Bellicheat and the New England Cheatriots!!!!!!!
Thanks for uploading this. This is one of my favorite Steelers games & I've never seen the replay before
At the 2005 season, the Colts started this season with a 13-0 record and seemed determined to make it to Super Bowl XL, but 2nd year quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers would shatter their hopes this day
18 years ago. Seems like yesterday Pittsburgh marched in to Lucas Oil Stadium and upset the Super Bowl favorite. Classic Steeler football right here.
In alot of ways, my heart is stuck in this era of steelers football.
Same
Steelers really did a good job disguising their blitzes in this game. Peyton did struggle a lot in the playoffs against exotic defensive schemes. Literally nobody was blocking Joey Porter there at the end.
Indeed.
Joey Porter was a stud on that loaded defense!
Glad to see his legacy thru his son Joey Porter Jr *AND* he's a Pittsburgh Steeler!!!😊
Steelers were kicking the Colts ass 21-3 then got conservative. Got some luck at the end but the Steelers dominated this game for 3 quarters. Steelers had the good luck of playing Indy earlier that season. They knew how to stop manning this game.
I only wish i could switch the 2 games and give tge Steelers a regular season blowout W instead of a playoff W! Oh well Peyton got u back in 2015
Being conservative doesn't seem to work out like it should.
The Steelers dominated the entire game. If not for the botched replay review, this game is never close.

I wasn't even 10 when this game happened. My uncle punched a hole in the wall when Bettis fumbled. One of the craziest endings ever and so much talent everywhere on the field. I used all these guys many times over in Madden on PS2. Take me back.
1:07:50 They must not know Bill Belichick
