This is one of my favorites, and so many people I've turned on to it never heard it before.
When I saw them in Las Vegas in 2003, Sammy was in great voice, the Van Halen Brothers were never better, and that night was Michael's Birthday!
They did a 3 hour show at The Orleans Event Center, my wife and I had a fantastic time!

The euphoric feeling of this music sums up the 80s for me. Everything was young, fresh, beautiful, innovative, optimistic. Just like Edward's guitar playing. Even violent movies were fun. The world looked up to America as a whole.

There was no one close. Had zeppelin lived on, that might be a different story. Since that did not happen, VH just killed it. New music and a tour every year. Yes, the good old days. Now., Metallica comes out with a new album every eight years or so. I miss these days of Dave being somewhat coherent and EVH and Mickey killing it, night after night.

I get choked up a lot of the time when I hear this song. Always have. I was in middle school when Diver Down came out. I got Fair Warning from Columbia Record And Tape and my mom bailed me out. It was a dark album for them and I felt it as a kid. I'll never forget Mean Street fading in for the first time though, holy shit. The next time we heard from Van Halen, it was Diver Down, and they had turned a corner yet again to their much brighter, happy go lucky side.
Other than the overall song, and the images it invoked about being in love with a senorita, which I always daydreamed about, it's Eddie's guitar that gives me the feels: 1:58, there's that extra bit to the main riff that he adds in - that does it - and at 2:25, as they're leaving the slow interlude with the slide guitar, the main riff fires back up and the song rises to the crescendo. Then, poof, the band is back in, firing on all cylinders and Dave delivers that line. It's so damn powerful.
I spent the morning of October 26, 2020 in Studio One of Sunset Sound Recorders, the room where Eruption was recorded. When I left, I was driving east down Sunset and flipped on Twitter at a stoplight and saw Wolf's post about the passing of his dad, and, you guessed it - I got choked up, just like I am now, typing these words.

12 yr. old post--so I'll keep the comments up to date! I first saw Van Halen in Mpls, Mn. It was indeed the "Diver Down Tour!" I had just turned fourteen and it was my third concert ( the first was "Elvis" in '76, the second was "Joan Jett" -- "I Love Rock and Roll Tour"). I left the arena after watching the show from stage level, on Edward's side, a CHANGED PERSON!!! I've seen Elvis; SRV's last show at Alpine Valley, in '90 ( also went home with his pick from a front-row show of his just weeks earlier). "The Grateful Dead's" last two shows at Soldier Stadium, in '95. "Prince" numerous times ( starting with "Purple Rain" in Mpls.). "Clapton" five times, "M. C. Hammer" w/ "En Vogue. " Iron Maiden" front row for "Piece of Mind Tour." "Michael Jackson," "Janet Jackson", "Sade," "Fleetwood Mac," "Bruce Springsteen," "Born In The U.S. A. Tour." "Tina Turner," AC/DC," ( Angus Young's sweat in my eye when he was on the back of roadie/security dude out in the crowd), "Sabbath" and "Ozzy's" first reunion tour, "Ozzy w/ Randy Rhoads," "Blizzard Tour," etc. I began with some great shows I had seen ( to emphasize how incredible my First "Van Halen" show was) and had to stop at some point; I was enjoying my regression back to youth and live rock concerts ( along with sex, drugs, keggers..), and got lost in it--sorry. I put the old "Diamond Dave- Van Halen" live show on my elite short-list! "Prince," "Lenny Kravitz," "SRV," are on this list; maybe a couple more...who would you add to, or remove from, such a list?

They really had it all,and they couldn`t be put into a category like "Hard Rock" or "Metal",they invented a unique genre all of their own in the same way as Led Zeppelin did earlier on...just incredible.

I saw the show in 82 at the centrum .
    Eddie had a broken wrist.
I didn't know but 4 Van Halen songs at the time so I didn't get to really appreciate the show as much as I could have.
I wish I had because looking back at these UA-cam clips of that era ...this band was firing on all cylinders at that time!

As long ago as this was the Cap Center has now been gone for half that time. Rather than wonder where the time has gone I take strength from these guys still fighting the good fight.
