He was the reason I picked it up. Never a bad thing to say about that, even though I wished I had dived as deep as I have in the last decade. Never to old to shred the shit out of it, and if you practice daily, even though you are older you will achieve incredible speed results.
Eddie was a true gift from God. What a absolute musical genius. Just set with some headphones on in a quiet room and actually listen to all the stuff that comes from his soul. It is truly amazing. A hundred years from now, some kid will pick up some Van Halen on whatever form they are listening to then and say to himself, "oh my God who is this guy and how did he do that?" Just like I did when I was a kid. R.I.P. Eddie you will be dearly missed.
Nice job 👍 Edwards sense of timing within the intro of that tune ( before Alex goes into straight forward 4/4 beat I think ) is nothing short of brilliant ...his rhythm blows me away ....was just listening to " Simple Rhyme "
some months ago i said to myself "fuck it! gonna try little guitars"! after some weeks trying to shape myself up to play it, i finnaly got it right, and in that first time i got it right, i was crying while playing.. That's how awesome eddie is... he makes people cry with his songs
So true! I don't even play and sometimes when I listen to him play I cry. I've also cried just about every time I saw them live (but I was 14, 15, 16 and 17 years old, so....teen girl tears lol).
I'm a bass player, and kinda can play Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love, and Unchained, and Dance the Night Away (all poorly and wrong) on guitar, but never tried anything real. I saw a video on how to play Runnin' With the Devil, and tried it, and was giddy, giggling how cool it was. I've always loved "Little Guitars" , and now that I see how it's done, I'm gonna try it. I bet I'll be gigglin'. So I totally get what you are saying.
so crazy to listen to this song 100x in the past, but not truly understand how much technique and inventive guitar playing goes into it! Excellent job!
And the fact that Eddie would run around on stage while playing this song literally jumping up and down and sliding across the stage! He was UNREAL!!! I’m sooooo thankful I got to witness his performances live on many occasions. Thanks for the incredible memories Edward!!!!
r.i.p. EVH. YOU TURNED’EM ALL INTO CLONES WITHOUT EVEN WANTING TO. THATS SOME POWERFUL INFLUENCE. WE’ll FOREVER LOVE YOU ! I KNOW I SURE WILL. goddamn.
This is a primo example of Ed’s genius. His sense of rhythm, phrasing, his songwriting ability. The guy had all bases covered. No weakness anywhere in his craft. - But, you knew that already.
Came across this video last night while we were all looking for comfort after Eddies passing. Love your playing, and thank you for showing just a little of Ed's genius.
Yeah , Van Halen Sound is DEFINETLEY one of the BEST things in Music , His Guitar Tone /Sound is ...i Have No words ..it goes through your Body and Soul .. I am A BIG Fan , and i Think i Have to Learn this Song RIGHT NOW
His first several albums up til 1984 were my favorite but i love them all to be honest. I know a lot of people are split between before and after but his tone was still pretty damn killer after also. Just a little different is all. What do you expect he grew as technology became more advanced. Every guitar player is always fiddling with their sound.
Edward Van Halen is the most influential musician of the last 100 years IMO. I don't think it's close. He was an absolute monster with the IT factor. Many great guitarists out there but this cat is cut from a different cloth. This is 40 years later and we are still mesmerized figuring out his magic. 40 years later I'm still catching things for the first time that slipped my attention before. Every time you think you figured it out you realize there's something else snuck in there that blows you away like it did when you heard the song for the first time.
I haven't owned an electric guitar for 20 years even though I've played for the last 30 years. You've totally convinced me that I need to get one again. That was so epic. Thanks. Have a great 2016.
One of the best VH covers on you tube ever! Not gonna lie. Thanks so much for sharing this. We all miss EVH so much. This really helps. More please ! :)
Awesome "KICK ASS" job of one of my favorite Van Halen songs- "Little Guitars II" Thanks Gary for sharing your great talent You Rock...................!!!!
Eddie Van Halen was a great composer. Those of us that lived through this are blessed. Can we all believe he wrote this stuff.....!!?? For me.... Forget about the guitar gymnastics, guitar tone. The pure joy contained within this creation is bliss. One of my fav. VH tunes
stewart keyes Couldn't agree more. Eddie's talked about now mostly for his techno-shredding legacy. But what I always found amazing was the pure happiness that just drips from his tunes. Can't fake that and can't consciously manufacture it. Wonderful.
Yep this was before the robotic highly technical guitar theory came into being. Still EVH was the one who inspired most of the greatest Virtuoso's like Satch. Satch and Vai actually have depth to their music. As opposed to just picking up a guitar and playing some arpeggio's really fast.
SO DARN RIGHT! You summed up in a few lines the true genius of Eddie Van Halen, both a musical and an emotional turning point for so many of us, KUDOS...
stewart keyes saw this (Diver Down) tour, twice as well as Fair Warning (2x's) and 1984 (2x's) pure greatness, seeing Eddie play Mean Streets AND Little Guitars on that miniature Les Paul was incredible, from about 15' away! Memories.
Just flipping thru and heard you doing this Gary spot on bro I love the melody in this Eddie was king with melodies and chords he played under riffs damn this is a moving song he surely will be missed
Holy crap dude! That was excellent playing and great view of what is actually being played. This has been my favorite song of VH for years and to see you lay it out like that makes me enjoy it even more and your talent is outstanding!
Every serious guitarist that played during Eddie's heyday who thought they came up with the coolest riff knew Eddie had one cooler and we loved it that way. RIP Meastro! God we miss ya😢😢
Killer. One of my favorite EVH riffs ever, so many things going on here and you really nailed the feel, tone, style. Thanks for sharing this Gary, now I can finally attempt to learn this song the "right way" ;)
I love this song so much, and 9 years after this was posted I finally found the lesson I need to try to take this thing on the right way. Thanks, and you frigging nailed this song!
Great job man, very good playing. It's always nice to see playing EVH's song with this accuracy, with this video details, and understand what it's going on behind a great song and finally realize that Eddie was a genius in technique, rhythmic and melody. Thank you!
Hey, I'm your 500th comment and just want to say thank you for posting this. You've got a great ear and absolutely nailed it, man! Happy to try to learn this thanks to you. Rock on, brother
Loved this song. Van Halen was a genius. Used to blast this from a boom box I took everwhere from The Gasworks patio to Lake Muskoka on a speedboat, cranked to 11. I was on top of the world back then, so were they...
Brings back the good old days.... I have lots of God given talents and I am thankful for them all, but I can`t play a single lick of music on anything! All I can do is enjoy the talents of others...so, with that I would like to say thanks.
damnit man! that song been kickin my ass for years you nailed it bro, GREAT JOB what a great guitar piece one of Eddie toughest songs but great touch on this
Great job Gary. The difficulty scale on that one goes up to 99...geez. "I hate you guitar gods"..haha. I also love to hear you do "Dancing In The Streets" from the same album. That song is far and away the best driving, cruising, road tripping song of all time, at least for me. Keep it up man!
How can 16 people thumb this down? Seriously, what the heck is wrong with you fools?! There's 16 we don't need around the interweb anymore. Love this song, always wanted to play it. Never got it right. This is great Gary, thanks. I'm inspired and will try my best to conquer this tasty little gem...on my far inferior guitar.
My God, all us 50 somethings we were all so incredibly blessed to have EVH in our youth. What a legend. R. I. P. 😔🙏🏼
He was the reason I picked it up. Never a bad thing to say about that, even though I wished I had dived as deep as I have in the last decade. Never to old to shred the shit out of it, and if you practice daily, even though you are older you will achieve incredible speed results.

6 years later...….he still does!
this comment hits hard rn
I almost cried just now..😬
Shows how intricate Eddie's songs can be.
so crazy to listen to this song 100x in the past, but not truly understand how much technique and inventive guitar playing goes into it! Excellent job!
And the fact that Eddie would run around on stage while playing this song literally jumping up and down and sliding across the stage! He was UNREAL!!! I’m sooooo thankful I got to witness his performances live on many occasions. Thanks for the incredible memories Edward!!!!
Crazy that Eddie be playing that on stage while running around and jumping is absolutely amazing.
r.i.p. EVH. YOU TURNED’EM ALL INTO CLONES WITHOUT EVEN WANTING TO. THATS SOME POWERFUL INFLUENCE. WE’ll FOREVER LOVE YOU ! I KNOW I SURE WILL. goddamn.
Let’s face EVH is the most influential inspirational guitarist ever. Ever.
This is a primo example of Ed’s genius.
His sense of rhythm, phrasing, his songwriting ability.
The guy had all bases covered. No weakness anywhere in his craft.
- But, you knew that already.
I like, "That's about the hardest part of the song". Actually, for me, the hardest part is the entire song... Great cover.
After Eddie's departure, I think I owe it to myself to learn this. I'm a big fan of riffs and rhythmic guitar overall and this is pure gold.
Kat Goldberg same. Learning it, too.
If this isn't one of the greatest guitar pieces ever written... I don't know what is...
Saw them in 1984 and when Alex hit the drum intro for this I went nuts. Always loved this tune.
You 'd be lucky to hear Eddie play it any better live! The best version I've seen on UA-cam. And I've seen quite a few. Good damn job, Gary!
Eddie played it right the first time brother ;)
Came across this video last night while we were all looking for comfort after Eddies passing. Love your playing, and thank you for showing just a little of Ed's genius.

It's so great to see this played up close! Great job, Gary, and many thanks for sharing this!
Beautiful. Gets me emotional.
"Catch as catch... catch as catch... CAAAAAAANNNN!" What a great song. Always takes me back... there.
As a 40 year VH fan and guitar player, You killed it! the best I've seen besides Ed!
say what ya want about eddie and alex, but they are true craftsman.
Holy Schutt! you killed it. I can now learn one of my all time favorite tunes. Thank you!
One of the best VH covers on you tube ever! Not gonna lie. Thanks so much for sharing this. We all miss EVH so much. This really helps. More please ! :)

Your knowledge of music alone is impressive, but coupled with your tone and ability it's no wonder you're one of the most prolific guitarists around!

Loved this song. Van Halen was a genius. Used to blast this from a boom box I took everwhere from The Gasworks patio to Lake Muskoka on a speedboat, cranked to 11. I was on top of the world back then, so were they...
To think up this kind of music, technique and track it into a melody is magic very few, I mean very very few have!
Brings back the good old days....
I have lots of God given talents and I am thankful for them all, but I can`t play a single lick of music on anything!
All I can do is enjoy the talents of others...so, with that I would like to say thanks.
up till 5150, Ed was the shizz. The first 5 albums, he and Alex put down stuff that was revolutionary.

Great job, Gary. Awesome tone, too. 😁
Unbelievable. I cannot get enough of this cover and now will be learning it soon with your great video.
Fantastic rendition Gary as we mourn tonight the man who wrote this incredible song R.I.P. Edward Lodewijk Van Halen

Great playing !
