yeah uh, I was hooked by Arlong Park and all, and it's certainly a strong act, but most of East Blue is only "good" outside of AP, which is "great". Once it gets into stuff like the entirety of Alabasta, Water Seven, Skypiea, etc, is when it's "incredible". And then there's the entire arc surrounding Sabaody, Impel Down and the Summit War, which are among my favorite arcs in anything ever. Man. He's gonna do an entire video on JUST Sabaody Archipelago, isn't he. There is SO MUCH to that short arc, and that's not even including the stuff with the Supernovas. If he thinks the character designs are amazing now, what's he gonna think about Scratchman Apoo, Trafalgar Law, or Basil Hawkins? just...I'm just doing that gif of shaq and the cat wiggling back and forth in anticipation at the videos he's gonna make about this :D
@@tcrpgfan yeah for real though Arlong park is my favorite arc in the east blue saga nami's origin is just all of the heartbreaking, Arlong is just the perfect amount of hateable monster douche and watching Luffy wreck his shit and break his nose is SUPER gratifying to watch
2spooky4me holy shit brook's and chopper's backstory were some of the saddest storys i watched in anime. A lot of dram anime shows didn't made me cry, but one piece no only made me cry, but did this a bunch of times and in the most random things possible (i cried over a ship! A fucking ship!)
Senior Pink to me is the best design in the series, not necessarily for aesthetics but solely for how well it ties into his backstory. Let's face it, the first time everyone saw Pink everyone thought "what the hell is this?" and as soon as the backstory rolled in we all understood him.
@Christian Harvey he will miss a lot of them, hell there were a shit ton of callbacks I missed when I was reading the manga because I wasn't in the community yet
Randy Jones that’s what makes it so fun whenever someone starts..we get to see their experience throughout it. I don’t think I’ll ever get over the joy one piece can bring to people haha it’s great
Truly, you gotta love how people's perspective on these show and certain elements about the characters shift as they learn more and more because they aren't used to older characters and plotlines being brought back, explored more or just outright resolved.
I'm following the journey of rant cafe's one piece virgin podcast and they're pretty much in the same phase.... where they don't know how tragic fishmen are... cute
My boyfriend would literally not stfu about One Piece. Sending me screenshots of current chapters or rambling about why some dragon dude is so cool or why Zoros second sword is important and it was the ONE anime I refused to watch because I hated the art, was jaded by the 4kids dub, punched walls when that dumb rap came on and just couldn't care less about noodle pirates and their dumb snail cell phones. I'm 200 eps in and idk the last time I had a good night sleep. I havnt cried like I did when they said goodbye to Vivi or worried for the safety of a tiny reindeer child doctor as he fought a mole woman. I didn't know a whales feelings of abandonment could hit so close to home or the feeling of friendship that connects through a rainbow void 50 years in the past. Everyone was right...it has statues erected in Japan and theme parks opening on the top of the Tokyo tower for a reason. The country mourned when a character died.... The only people who say it's a bad show are just trying to be edgy and elitist. It's a treasure and while not my all time top it's a good solid second.
@@cvox607 haha i understand, probably tied for me too, i just re read OP so leaning there, luffy and gintoki are tied for my favourite character ever too
I feel like there are some aspects of Nami’s design that were kind of overlooked. Her bright orange hair is meant to resemble the tangerines, emphasizing how highly she values her family, right? And she is quite literally the “fruit” of Bell-mére’s labor (and sacrifice). The changing clothes are due to her love of money, her autonomy (new ability to buy things for herself instead of perpetually saving), and likely carryover from her life as a thief in which she had to adopt various personalities to consistently fly under the radar. In that way, the changing clothes signify her cunning which is so masterful that during the Arlong Park arc we genuinely asked ourselves: “Do we really know Nami after all?”
I loved nami at first and her heel turn there was a surprise and made me want to know more...she was clearly hiding things and not evil...that's clear with her freeing zoro and how she saves usopp and doesn't want luffy involved....her story was what this show needed when it happens..it changes the tone was heavy but also meaningful about womanhood and ties to the government angle and racism and redemption stuff oda loves an adoptive family stuff which the crew is to nami...if you get to episode 45 and are not intrigued or hooked just quit...period...i mean the show does get better with robin and marineford but the true messages of one piece are shoved in your face in arlong park..like it or not...the fact nami was this nobody girl luffy didn't have to help but chooses to without knowing her past trusting her cause she's been good this entire time and she's very skilled and useful and kind proves anyone can be special which luffy saw and her story defines the core themes narrative and issues we see in every arc of one piece...there's a reason luffy gets his bounty after helping her which gets smoker on his tail changing the course or his life...
Nami's trees that honor her mom on the ship her pinwheel tangerine changed arlong tattoo to honor her sister mom and father to remind her of where where came from that will never go away and was damaged like she was inside her short orange hair to contrast her sad slavery her big smile despite being a homeless poor orphan her dream of mapping the world which kept her alive but also under arlong which led to her navigation and thief skills to make her dreams come true..nami had a lot to her that maybe her design didn't need to prove or it did in subtle ways he failed to mention..shes written so well for a lead shounen female despite being far weaker than the monster trio and a few other crewmates like jinbe and franky...the fact nami can be tough and useful every arc is a testament to oda and her character that we all like...most mangakas would just use her for fansevice or put her in the background or be a hindrance...oda gives her situations to show her worth every arc something he doesn't even give robin proving how hard it is to keep up with females and males in your main cast and give them foes and real one on one fights ..her design doesn't need to be insane and post timeskip its different and I like it..
The most touching part of zeffs backstory to me, something I only realized years after initially reading one piece, is that zeff had the option of either eating one of his own legs, or one of his arms. If he ate an arm, then he would be giving up being a chef, but if he chose the leg then he would give up being a pirate. But before all that, he could have also chosen to keep himself whole, and given nothing to Sanji.
"The world these cartoon characters live in is kinda... horrific when you think about it." Dude.... you're still in the shallow waters. You've yet to even get your toes wet.
My favorite example of this is in the Reverie Arc where all the world leaders are in awe of the moving sidewalks in Mariejois and then you pan underground to find out it's just a bunch of slaves pulling the sidewalk from underneath.

“That the grand tales about noble and adventurous pirates doing incredible things that he heard in his youth, were mostly exaggerations and lies.” Oh boy... you have much to learn young one.
Frankly, even after chap 1000, I don't see any Noble and adventure pirates like Luffy. Shanks group kills easily (even in front of kids), he doesn't give any crap about changing the world for good either. Law was ok to left Dressrosa, Roger left Wano in hands of tyrants. Frankly, I don't see pirates like Luffy yet
I cannot WAIT for him to get to Jaya/Skypia! It's the literal antithesis to this thought! It's going to be so funny and wonderful to see him learn one of the greatest joys of One Piece: the almost childlike sense of adventure in spite of cynicism & the hellish things that lurk in the world. Holy hell I'm so excited!!
@@sohailsadaqat6684 I'll agree with you that Luffy is among the more noble of pirates, but I don't really think I'd call him "noble" outright. His entire ideology is to be as free as he wants so that others can't constrain him, and he continuously makes selfish decisions for himself and others with little regard for what other people think, it just so happens that they often end up coming around to him over time regardless, that's literally how almost every member of his crew is recruited. And he also happens to be strong enough to consistently protect people from the dangerous situations he technically leads them all into. *Spoilers for Sabaody to Fishman Island below* - - - I mean, the guy declared war on a yonko and claimed their territory more or less entirely on a whim, and with no consideration for what the citizens actually wanted. It just so happened that they were fine with it because Luffy happened to befriend Shirahoshi and Jinbei and decided to stop Hody and protect the island. The event at the Human Auction House is another great example of Luffy acting selfishly in such a manner that harms his entire crew, in addition to several of the Supernovas and some no-names, permanently damaging Sabaody because of Kizaru, and more or less forcing Rayleigh and Kuma to act, while technically going against Hachi's wishes and complicating Camie's rescue and endangering countless people, both citizens and pirates. That's also pretty much how every other single pirate captain is presented for the most part, particularly the "good" ones. They do what they want, and have crews and allies that just tend to also want to do those things. They're rarely presented as being properly altruistic people, as a matter of fact they often just have a personal bone to pick with the bad guys, and generally refrain from harming civilians, at least directly. *Spoilers for recent anime Wano content below* - - - Furthermore, Roger didn't "leave Wano in the hands of tyrants". Roger had left the crew and died before that fact was ever even discovered by anyone other than Oden. Wano had closed borders, so accessing the country near the end of the New World is already a task in and of itself, let alone getting access to the information that Kaido had even taken over it. Not to mention the fact that the crew had pretty much already disbanded by the time any of this could have come to light.
@@PrometheusXV Luffy doesn't just value *his own* freedom, he values the freedom of others equally. He very much is about a person's right to suffer the consequences of their choices, and not suffer the consequences of choices that were made against their will.
I shall agree with them from the sidelines as to avoid them hounding me into reading it and therefore eating all my time away. I have learned how these things work.
"Monkey D. Luffy is a dumb kid who never realized that the grand tales of noble, adventurous pirates doing incredible things that he heard in his youth were mostly exaggerations and lies spilling from the drunken mouths of sailors who rob other sailors for a living." Oh *honey*. Ain't nothing stupid about Luffy's dream. You gonna LEARN what it means to be the Pirate King!
That is kind of the first chapter though. While Shanks and crew back then were living off the thrill, they don't necessarily want everyone to join them. They can simultaneously love their life and fear it for anyone else. Shanks too, acts a certain way because of his admiration to Roger. Roger was brash, and tightroping the line between brave and idiotic. There were even times that Shanks wanted him to run. There's enough to prove that Shanks at the very least understands the dangers of it. Shanks getting those scars from Blackbeard are also an indicator that it's not all fun and games, and while his crew are the red hair pirates- his jolly roger are expressive of those three scars. In the first chapter, Shanks even makes it clear that he's not a good person. "We're not saints. We're pirates."
I think you misinterpreted what he was saying. If anything he's saying (despite Luffy's silliness) that Luffy's dream is so powerful that he's turning what he BELIEVES a pirate should be into a reality. SHANKS is making pirate life SEEM amazing and heroic. Pirates are anything but that. Luffy is making what Shanks exaggerated into actuality. That's the point. He wasn't saying Luffy's dream is stupid, he's essentially alluding to how powerful Luffy's dream actually is. Not sure how you understood that as MB calling Luffy's dream stupid.

Señor Pink's design is probably the fucking best design Oda has ever done. Only after you know who he is of course... before you are just confused... so so confused...

I love how this is a newcomers take on how they interpret the series and Oda's insane storytelling. However, your going to have to redo this video in the future, I guarentee it. There is a bunch of misinformation spread about but not because you got anything wrong, it's just that you're jumping to conclusions without knowing what's in store for you. Trust me, you have NO clue how immense the story is, how detailed the world building is, how legendary the foreshadowing is, how intense the plot twists are, one piece is huge, and you missed over/assumed a lot of stuff which is understandable, but just know, you've no idea what's in store for you later down the line, and even though you were praising it to know end, you'll soon see that even you were underestimating Oda.
I feel bad, because while that's one of my fave scenes in one piece, I can't even say it's my fave of that saga. For reference, "Shoot down that flag" beats it.
It's a shame we don't get such fights more often. That disagrement was amongst my fav fights in the entire manga as it's a lot more brain and a lot less raw power, kind of Hunter x Hunter style
@@TheSeleneSeipher oddly, not as strong as "shoot" or the scene in the Original post. That said, it's still in my top 10 scenes in one piece because it is that good. That arc/saga was probobly my fave saga of all one piece. And I'm keeping in mind, marine ford exists.

One piece is the best proof that even long running shounen can have very solid stories, characters and worldbuilding. It is definitely worth getting into, even if it is long and can seem intimidating because of it's sheer size.

I’ve thought this for a long time and I’ll continue to repeat whenever I get the chance: One Piece is quite literally a modern day epic, up there with Gilgamesh, Dante’s Inferno and The Odyssey. And furthermore, it’s the only epic to be fully visually illustrated. Given the world phenomenon Oda has created, I sincerely hope it gets remembered as an epic a century from now.
@@thomasffrench3639 To be further fair, Oda has said many a time that Dragon Ball was/is a major influence for him. It's fairly noticeable, and to me it's always really cool to see how well different works of art can simultaneously show what inspired them, while also evolving into their own thing.

Favorite character without spoilers is Usopp. I did not like him in the beginning but the further I read the more he grew on me and now he’s like one of, if not, my favorite. Favorite arc is Enies Lobby because it highlights the whole crew better than any other single arc
I always say God Usopp is when he became my favorite but really it was because of all the Sanji x Usopp art/moments. Once it was pointed out it became really obvious! Like, I'm not a shipper but damn
For sure! Even among the already great cast, Usopp is the best character hands down. Not only has he enjoyed the most development out of the entire crew, he's also the most human among them, relying on wits and tools rather than some sort of amazing physical abilities, and being scared shitless when confronted with powers that defy common sense. Part of that comes from the fact that he's the least necessary member of the crew in principle, so he has both more worries and more avenues for growth and involvement with the rest, which Oda totally takes advantage of. I also like his post-timeskip design and how he gained some necessary self-confidence after putting on some muscles but still being true to most of his core traits. But Water 7/Enies Lobby was certainly the part that propelled him from a great character to a god-tier character. I think he deserves his own feature on a review channel like this.
Seeing Usopp and thinking "now that's a dude that uses elastic things to cause problems" made me laugh coz of how he spends his down time: causing problems with Luffy (An elastic thing). And now I have accidentally put the image in my mind of Usopp holding a shrunk down version of luffy like you would an elastic band you're planning to fling at you brother.
I am so curious to see the evolution of your take on One Piece. Should be fascinating to see the opinions of someone who's consumed so much, and is going in fully aware of the hype change over time

I wish I could forget all about One Piece, and experience it all over again. One Piece was the very first manga I actually decided to read, because I love how long the story has been. Alabasta saga, Skypeia arc, Water 7 and Post-Enies Lobby arcs, and many many more... Each chapter and saga Oda creates keeps getting better and better, and it's unfathomable how he's been doing this for 23 years.

Dunno, it makes a very big difference if you only see a single episode every week, with about 13/14 minutes of story length (rest is recap/preview). That was the main thing that drove me off, alongside some fillers/ less interesting side stories. After a long break now, I can just skip this and it's double the fun to watch. Likely the Manga would have been the better choice for me.
@@TheAlex11880 I honestly can't recommend the manga enough, but if you'd rather stick to the anime format you should check out One Pace. Be pulled in. Embrace the journey. The is no escape anyway. PS. There are so many great characters... But at least from the East Blue Saga, besides every single member of the Straw Hat Pirates, Shanks is crazy amazing. With regard to the character designs, I still love them today, although I think east blue designs will always be my favorite. However, having character designs change over time helps me visualize how much they have progressed. Eichiro Oda is a genius, which is why we OP fans call him GOda.
Tell me about it man, I read through all of what was available during the summer of '09, and it was a hoot. I don't know what the bigger surprise is that I loved it as much as I did or that nearly eleven years later I still do.
Usopp is my favorite character! Not just from the series specifically, but probably my favorite fictional character period. Seeing how he has to deal with his overwhelming fear, pessimism, and insecurities (and internalizing himself as a coward and a liar) and how hard he still tries and how much he cares about his friends,,, just hits different.
Usopp Nami Sanji kept me more engaged than Luffy Zoro Chopper pre Robin joining....not going to lie...I found them more interesting as characters flat out because of flaws and feeling 3d real and normal...Usopp's arc is so underrated I love Kaya hearing his backstory that that crew never did which explains when he cries hard it calls back to when his mom was dying....and Nami being a strong woman and redemption as an adoptive pure baby for a former marine who did bad things but regrets it was so good...like I love that
So happy that you finally embarked on the One Piece journey, Jeff! I'm constantly shocked and disappointed by the lack of publicity One Piece gets in America despite it's cult-like status in Japan. I feel like One Piece is a treasure trove of some of the best narrative and art, ever. I'm so glad you plan on making more One Piece videos, because One Piece needs more appreciation, and Oda's attention to world and character building is frankly legendary.
Ahmed Magdy I'd love to, but he'd probably be unhappy. It's a small class and he's mostly relating Japanese culture and terminology through One Piece characters, like using Usopp to explain how to describe a person's physical attributes, or Franky for outdated fashion trends.
Love the openings playing softly in the background and love that someone can understand such amazing and more importantly, CONSISTENT writing and world building in a series for just over 23 years. It just impresses me so how someone can write such a masterpiece for so long and it's not even done and it's considered a masterpiece.
Oh my gosh yes, an entire series of videos of Mother's Basement gushing about One Piece? Just YES! Also I'm kinda glad you're starting these while you're still in East Blue, the beginning part of One Piece is really underrated because of all the awesome arcs we get later, but the East Blue arcs will always have a special place in my heart - no one would've fallen in love with One Piece without them!
SVISSMAIL dotnet i agree Most anime writers cannot draw at all That’s the problem I agree 👍 So I’ll like your comment He only one which makes sense. That makes two of us 🤘☝️
I love the simplicity of Luffy. He isn't just "dumb protag lol" he's just so casual having already found what he wants at such a young age, and going about getting it. I adore how within 5 minutes he can tell one of three things. If he wants to have you on his crew, be your friend or just want to punch you in the face.
Another fun piece of trivia about Usopp: his name is a portmanteau of the words "uso" (Japanese for "lie") and "Aesop" (as in Aesop's fables), further hinting to his nature of lying and telling tall tales.

*Spoilers for Sabaody to Fishman Island below*

I mean, the guy declared war on a yonko and claimed their territory more or less entirely on a whim, and with no consideration for what the citizens actually wanted.
*Spoilers for recent anime Wano content below*

Furthermore, Roger didn't "leave Wano in the hands of tyrants".

Oh *honey*. Ain't nothing stupid about Luffy's dream. You gonna LEARN what it means to be the Pirate King!
Huh. Exaggerated stories from Shanks huh? :^)
A lold so much at the lies part
I think you misinterpreted what he was saying. If anything he's saying (despite Luffy's silliness) that Luffy's dream is so powerful that he's turning what he BELIEVES a pirate should be into a reality. SHANKS is making pirate life SEEM amazing and heroic. Pirates are anything but that. Luffy is making what Shanks exaggerated into actuality. That's the point. He wasn't saying Luffy's dream is stupid, he's essentially alluding to how powerful Luffy's dream actually is. Not sure how you understood that as MB calling Luffy's dream stupid.
Don't forget that even counting some more recent characters, the pirate King is a total eception. In body and mind.

And furthermore, it’s the only epic to be fully visually illustrated. Given the world phenomenon Oda has created, I sincerely hope it gets remembered as an epic a century from now.

Thriller Bark
I have trouble picking my favorite character, I love all of the characters, but Usopp is definitely one of my top favorites
