@I Am The One Who Knocks It's a legitimate theme in MHA though. The plot reveres Toshinori for his service, while still criticizing the flaws in a system that is so dependent on Toshinori "being" All-Might

    • @vampcinder7237
      @vampcinder7237 4 роки тому +78

@I Am The One Who Knocks He's not being cynical. That comment is backed up time and time again by the canon story. It's practically one of All Might's biggest focuses that despite his overwhelming strength, heroic attitude, and determination to save everyone, even he can't really be that perfect pillar of hope. His life as All Might practically consumes him, and so does the guilt he feels that despite all the good he's done, evil still runs rampant in their world.
Because ultimately, "All Might" is a symbol rather than a person. And Toshinori, much to his own dismay, is a person rather than a symbol. So even he can't REALLY be the symbol of All Might all the time. Toshinori himself supports this by expressing his dissatisfaction at not being able to save everyone and his injuries weakening him. He has flaws, he can't keep going forever, and the moment he leaves things kinda fall apart.
It's not cynical, it's an actual plot point in the story.

But to simply state that we follow rules and stay out of trouble and that’s all there is to it, I would have to respectfully disagree. If those community’s were simply to follow your ideology, we would live in a very different world today wouldn’t you say? True justice though...less of a focus on the isms and more of a focus on how do we fail better and do better. I think we might catch some of that in the seasons to come in this show.

Right? I actually really like when they slow it down and let the characters do normal every day stuff. Like the school festival is a great example and how to save Eri from the darkness Overhaul put her in they had to show her something fun. It's like Nana Shimura said a hero needs to save people not just from danger but also from despair and to do that sometimes you gotta smile especially when things go south. Also if the show was all action a lot of the fights would lose their value. And while their fights aren't the most choreographed they do go by the very simple thought process of, less is more.

But he ran in to save someone who tormented him his whole life, knowing that he could die. He inspired All Might and he deemed Midoriya worthy of his power. Then he made him train his body really hard for 10 months. All Might says multiple times that he doesn’t regret giving him the power, and even after proving himself Deku still wants to work because he feels that deep down he was given the power without deserving it. I think he deserves one for all more than anyone else. The closest person would be Mirio.

I think one of my favorite parts of BNHA is that most of the major villains aren't just "bad guys for the sake of being bad." They have actual characterization, you can understand why they do what they do, and sometimes you might even agree with them on some things.

@Tin Watchman All For One also offers an interesting twist on the classic megalomaniac, by having a legitimate argument for his rule being beneficial... there are quirks that are just plain dangerous for the wielder, and he can save them from themselves. He's the *only* one who can save them. While it's made absolutely clear that he only encourages those ideas because of the power and authority it allows him to wield, and not for the benefit of society, it does add an interesting wrinkle to an otherwise played-out formula.

There are hero's in their world

  • @ghenesapaulma1963
    @ghenesapaulma1963 4 роки тому +855

What made me love MHA to the core:
    1) Since having quirks is the norms in their world, being a hero isn't their only occupation. The people can still work like what we normally do, and taking the hero course is just a choice rather than an obligation for someone who has superpowers. UA school even has general and marketing courses.
    2) Even though they do most of the work, the heroes still need the police force in keeping the villains and criminals in custody and doing other stuff legally. Pretty clear in All Might entrusting the villain he caught in the bottle to the police or when they were going on a mission during the Overhaul Arc.
    3) Speaking of legal stuff, u actually do need a license or a professional's permission to use ur quirk for fighting villains. As cool as the Stain fight was, we were slapped back to reality that part of their law was to not use ur quirk however and whenever u want in regards to attacking villains/criminals.
    4) Because at the end of the day, they are still students. The professional heroes do what they have been trained to do and their experience would often overshadow that of the students' in just the right way at the right time.
    5) The "generic" IzuOcha ship is actually pretty refreshing and feels natural in this teenage school setting. U can almost hear Horikoshi saying through the IzuOcha moments "This is the sure ship, idc if its predictable cuz I mean it to be; and besides this ain't romance so we're not gonna dwell on who chooses who, let's go back to the main plot, kay? Kay."
(And yes, I ship IzuOcha. I need me some cutesy, sweet, and normal crushes from time to time after all the romanticized crap when it comes to romance in this anime world. I'm looking at you, Meliodas)
    6) The animation that makes emotional scenes all the more impactful, like Deku clutching his heart and kneeling over while crying at All Might's words, All Might and Deku's father-son moments, people cheering on All Might in spite of his exposed shriveled form, or when Overhaul's shadow over Eri was blasted away by the power of music and true happiness (and yes, I cried like a baby too many times throughout the series, shush).
    7) Oh look, what do ya know, the characters make mistakes and LEARN from them (Bakugo still has a long way to go, but he's getting there). Like Iida after the Stain incident, he learned not only to make the same mistake again but also apply it to other people he cared about (protecting Izuku from doing something stupid and breaking himself again during the All for One reveal).
    8) Izuku. Oh my beloved son, Izuku. We see him grow, we see him break, we see him fall and rise back up again. He's the very definition of "talent without hardwork is nothing". With every new skill and development comes with new challenges and does not equate to being perfect at it.
    9) They don't just stick to stereotypes. We would have thought Bakugo is an irrational "I don't care about anything" madman but he's actually hella smart and does good with house chores, or Aizawa-sensei who looks like an incompetent teacher but does his job damn well for the students.
    10) I never found the fight scenes boring to be quite honest. They were quick and straightforward with a lot of purpose in-between offenses and defenses. They fight smart, not just fight hard.
I have a lot more reasons but that's all for now. Thanks for coming to my tedtalk *bows

If every season was like s6, then BNHA would deserve 50% of the hype it gets. It's not even in my top 7, but I do enjoy it. It's been getting SO much better recently, but you anime onlys might actually not like s6, because before s5, it's pretty chill, but now it's actually intense and hype. It used to be a series I just watched as an extra if I was sad from other anime to cheer me up, but I'm genuinely interested now. Just my opinion, not hating, I do like BNHA, but I hate the fact that it gets undeserved hype, but if Horikoshi has to deal with the most toxic fandom, than he can have the popularity too. :)

Unfortunately you're leaving out a big part that Jeff brought up in this very video about how MHA systems up to this point hasn't allowed or yet revealed any real corruption within itself. So no matter how outdated the systems put it place are they were made with almost universal good intentions. Thus its really easy not to blame the actions and motivations of the previous generations because there is little to no real fault. Unfortunately this is far from true in the real world.
When tens or hundreds of thousands of people die easily preventable deaths to unnecessary systems just to prop up the status quo are people suppose to stay quiet and allow the carnage to continue so that previous generations don't have to have their feelings hurt? I'm genuinely curious if it turned out that the government in MHA turned out to be secretly supporting The League of Villian's so that their public actions keep the general public afraid and reliant on the current day Hero Society so that those in charge continue to stay in power and profit, what your response would be. The point of my comment is that it's "relatively" easy to not blame current day problems on the generations before you when they were genuinely coming from a good place. However what about when things aren't so clear-cut, or downright muddy? The friendship and support that he shows to Bakugo fills my heart with joy every single time. And with that continued support Bakugo has started to be a better friend in return. He might just seem like a secondary character at first but he has really proven himself as a character that stands well all on his own

I started watching bnha recently and just swallowed 3 seasons in short amount of time to the point that I'm caught up with airing episodes of seasons 4 and what can I say? I ADORE IT.
I'm amazed mostly by the characters. Watching them do the smallest things, play around, and help each other in daily tasks makes me happy. Following their character developments and watching how strong they're getting is extremely exciting. They're colorful and super positive, and that's something that kinda makes my day better. It's really nice to cut out from dark reality to, as you mentioned, that light hearted childish hope.
Also, they're all very orginal while still having that traits of being those "typical" characters. Bakugo is a loud angry boy, but not really. He is incredibly smart and his emotions are complex. His anger fuels him and makes him stronger instead of being an obstacle. He also becomes a slightly better person while gaining friends yet he still has the same characteristics and what's most important he didn't need a speech from the main character about love and friendship and all that shit. He has his own story that is well developed.
Deku in other hand is that typical dude who gains power from nowhere and becomes the strongest yet he has to sacrifice a lot and he doubts himself constantly which makes him work even harder.
Todoroki is that perfect and quiet edgy boi except he isn't. He loses his shit quite few times and even when he is one of the strongest he makes a lot of mistakes which cause him to fail. We would expect him to be depressed or angry to the point he becomes a bad guy because of what happened to him but he doesn't. He accepts it as a part of his past and a part of himself and tries to work with it to be a better person than his father.
Uraraka could be that quiet, shy and annoying useless girl, but she isn't. We would expect from her to want to become a hero only because she loves everyone and she wants to share love and shit or she wants to prove that she isn't useless but nah. She is going to become a hero because SHE IS BROKE to the point she goes to take a nap when she is hungry so she doesn't have to spent money on food. She needs money for herself and her family. That's different.
Anyway I could go on and on about all the characters and how much I adore every single one of them but no one is going to read it anyway. This anime isn't a masterpiece I've seen bunch of series way better than bnha but I enjoy it a lot and I'm definitely calling it one of my favorites.
Ps. I didn't write anything about Kirishima and I feel bad about it because he is one of my favorites. Such a good boi I love him.

It’s interesting how much of a theme that legacy plays into the main hero and villain of this series. Midoriya recieves the legacy of All Might and One For All, trying to become the next great hero; Shigaraki recieved the legacy of All For One, to become the next great villain.
    Spoilers
In recent arcs, this even reflects in how they grow stronger: Midoriya is gifted with the quirks of great heroes who came before him, willingly. Shigaraki, on the other hand, is building his power base by effective high-jacking the legacies of villains who came before him, like Stain's philosophy, Overhaul's bullets, and Destro's followers, and twisting them to his own ends. One For All passes strength on-All For One steals it.

    • @jesseabel9438
      @jesseabel9438 4 роки тому +65

You can also apply the legacy theme to a lot of characters
Iida inheriting the Ingenium legacy, Todoroki inheriting Endeavors legacy and all the complicated feelings that justifiably gives him, even the manga appears to be setting up Shinso to inherit Aizawa's legacy
I'm sure there's more examples I can't think of right now but it's clear that legacy and inheritance is a major theme throughout the entire series

    • @Sjono
      @Sjono 4 роки тому +46

      Jesse Abel
Indeed. Almost every main character, hero and villain alike, is being influenced by the legacy of someone who came before them, which influences their characters. The series is largely about the transition from one generation of heroes and villains to the next, and how the legacy one generation leaves behind influences the generation that follows after:
      - Midoriya and Bakugo are both trying to live up to the legacy of All Might, but have different ideas about what that means, leading to their rivalry.
      - Shigaraki is doing the same by trying to become a successor worthy of All For One.
      - Todoroki had his father's legacy unwillingly forced upon him, and is trying to create an identity of his own.
      - Several members of the League of Villains, like Dabi and Spinner, were inspired to become villains by the legacy Stain left behind.
      - Overhaul trying to return the Yakuza back to its former glory to carry on what he believes is his boss’ will.
      - The entire Meta Liberation Army is trying to carry on the Legacy of Destro.

It makes sense for a hero to want a legacy to protect the world. But a villain usually does things selfishly and is weird to want a successor and work hard to build things up just for someone else to rule it. It's funny because All For One seems more serious about it too. Like it's specifically the goal while in Midoriya's case, he just needs to be a hero and maybe the new symbol of peace. But the reason I'm taking note of this is with the villains is because it reminds me of the Sith in Star Wars. There's always only 2. A master and an apprentice. And they build it up for the apprentice to take over. And then I recall how the guy must be a fan of Star Wars cuz a ton of the locations are named after places in Star Wars like Kamino, Degubah, Tatooine. And on top of that (and they might change this in the English version), one of Mirio's attacks had the subtitle "Phantom Threat" while he verbally actually spoke the words "Phantom Menace!"

That theme of inheriting a legacy is something else it has in common with Star Wars. Not to be that guy and bring up the sequel trilogy, but it does have that theme as well, but imho MHA does it a lot better. Whatever your opinion on the sequel trilogy is, MHA is definitely doing it's theme better.

It's kinda amazing how relatable Horikoshi can make his characters. Take Kirishima for instance. When he's introduced, sure, he's a great guy that we'd all love to have as a friend IRL, but he isn't exactly someone most audience members can relate to. He comes across as this fiery, manly, upbeat figure who's brave, tough and skilled enough to befriend even Bakugo, the angriest boi in 1-A. Then comes his character development during the Chisaki Arc. It shows a radically different side to this one-note, seemingly-simplistic character; it shows he's not as invulnerable as his attitude and quirk will have you believe. He's one of the most human characters in the show because his entire persona that he's admired for is just an act- an armor to protect his true self. He's filled with doubt about his abilities and he's painfully aware of how weak he is really. His true strength as a character doesn't come from his strengths, it comes from his weaknesses.

I love how they're fleshing out the cracks in this hero-centered society. The Gentle mini-arc--which is objectively boring and annoying on its face--is actually low-key brilliant. We've seen people fall through the cracks before and turn to villainy for a sense of community and purpose (the entire League of Villains, basically), but we've never seen someone actually reach out for help and be rejected. The resolution of Gentle's storyline, when the heroes tell him they might have a place for him, shows that there is flexibility in this system that nobody seems to know about. There was always a place for Gentle, but he literally never knew he even had the option to reach out for help because, in this world, you're either a hero or a villain and heroes are expected to always be there in the nick of time, and are not allowed to fail. I'd argue that a major observation made in MHA is that the mythology of heroism is what's causing the harm in this society. As MB says so succinctly, not everyone can be All Might - not even All Might.

    2. Characters of all walks who, despite not being a "main character," are still major contributors to the plots, themes, and development of the central characters and themes.
    3. The characters usually feel like they could easily be solid potential main characters of series focusing solely on them.
As an adult who just eats up Shonen like candy, the surprising weight I found in HeroAca over time was a breath of fresh air. It certainly isn't as pithy as it could be with the concepts it explores, but I think it's better those questions and trains of thought remain open-ended for discussion outside of a fun battle-romp instead of acting like it actually has all the answers. As such a well-made story it could be an easy trap to fall into to see it as infallible or put it on an undeserved pedastel, but if it's used as a conversation starter for systems and philosophies found in the real world it offers much more in potential.
    Spoilers moving forward:
Hawks is my absolute favorite character by a landslide, potentially because he's equal parts fanservice fodder and a genuinely relatable protagonist. He thrives and shines in the system he was more or less built for, better and above most of his current peers and only held back from the literal #1 spot by inexperience and a lack of self-confidence he's what the public needs (or the recognition that he isn't and could never be, depending on how you look at him). But for all he's trying to do to put out fires and prop up a societal structure he knows isn't going to stabilize society he's been beaten into and forced into the same mold without the freedom to actually break it or the courage to abandon it all together to take a chance on something new because doing so could create more chaos than it would fix. The best he can do is openly fight it where he sees it's broken and work with it where it does well hoping someday it'll all pay off and he can breathe freely - even though he knows and is discouraged deep down in his heart that his hands are just as dirty of the corruption and cowardice he sees and despises.
He's such a great representation of that capable "in between" generation who isn't quite running the world yet, but has enough of a managerial position to get the ball rolling - or at least such is how I've interpreted him. Yet, for as much as I love him, I don't want him being crammed into places he shouldn't be in the series just because he's already so popular. He isn't the main character and he isn't meant to be. So far Horikoshi seems to have a plan for where he ultimately ends up, but if reading between the lines can serve me at all in this instance, I'd say the end game for his character is that his greatest contribution to the plot will be in the places he didn't give in and compromise on his core principles and his legacy will be where he specifically attempted to stand in or pass on those same morals and determination. He's just part of a greater puzzle and sticking to that role is the best he and Horikoshi can do for the series, I think.
(I just have a hard time not rambling about my favorite character, especially with his first anime appearance so close I can taste it!)

And now we got him! Wasn't the biggest fan of his animation in the second to last ep of S4 (butchered his adorable yakitori panel imo) but his high end fight and small dip into his backstory gave me goosebumps (him and Endeavor are my favorite characters in the show so you can imagine my reaction)
And I love your meta about him being the generation bridging the two! And even though I'd rather him be done justice than shoved in every scene, it feels to me that so far of all the pro heroes he (among Endeavor as well as Mic and Eraser after the kurogiri reveal) had the most potential with their setup, not counting those we haven't met outside of fights, so crossing fingers they will stay in the story for the foreseeable future. Would love to hear your take on the potential endgame for him you have in mind, and whether it still holds up with the latest manga updates!

He also has to struggle against himself and some of the characteristics that are similar to his dad in season 3 during the hero licensing exam. Those traits that he shares with his dad are what created problems between him and Inasa.
Bakugo, as stereotypically loud and angry as he seems, also has A LOT beneath the surface. He actually admires Deku to an extent (something foreshadowed in previous seasons and revealed in season 3) because Deku seems to be the chosen favorite of All Might. This has created jealousy and extra resentment. Yet he also trusts Deku enough to explode in front of him in season 3. He also trusts Deku to be able to save All Might in the first novie, where he and Todoroki stay back to fight the lackies. Bakugo cares about Kirishima because of their experiences together. Bakugo, as much of a jerk as he seems, has several moments where he also shows emotion or care, like when he cried after losing the challenge in season 1, and when he expresses that he killed all Might in season 3.
Uraraka struggles with both wanting to be supportive to her friends and also wanting to be her own hero.
Lida struggled with his own ego and also his thirst for vengeance.

The thing about romance in My Hero Academia. I think Horikoshi can write a great romance if he gets the chance to. It has gone on record saying that he wants to give the characters that haven't gotten much screen time but couldn't due to the story that he wants to tell in the current arc or other reasons. We know he can write good relationships so it's not like he can't write romance at all. The romance between Deku and Uraraka, in my opinion, is very good. It's simple, but I think it has more going for it than is given credit for. There's a little moment between the two in season 4 that not many people have noticed. In it Deku is really stressed out until Uraraka gets his attention and she gestures to him basically saying, "We've got this." which calms him down and he gestures back. It's not big or grand, but it's moments like this that really make this relationship so good. I think Horikoshi designed them to go together. They both have big friendly eyes, their personalities complement each other with Deku being shy and nerdy and Uraraka being extraverted and bubbly, and they have complementary colors. Green's complementary color is red and pink is only a lighter version of red. They are literally made for each other.

I personally would love the series to have more space for romance and simple slice of life really. Horokoshi has all these great character dynamics and it's a shame that it can't seem to get deeper with those aspects than usual shonen level. If you have such a rich cast of characters, interactions between them are half the fun. Hell, it's the only manga I'm picking up the light novels of, just because I desperately crave more of the everyday life of these characters I love so damn much.
Ok, I just want some more romance. GIMME THAT. I know it's kind of a non written rule for shonens to have extremely barebone, mandatory light romance but MHA has the potential to go beyond, even in this department.

In my book, MHA (and other good action shounen series) are just FUN. They don't have to be super deep or fullfill some sophisticated need, just entertaining. Action shounen do that splendidly for me as they tend to be rather fast paced, have some great-looking action scenes, lots of hype and frequently rather simple but still touching character dynamics. They offer a consistent high.
MHA is, for me, the perfect shounen. It's pacing so far has consistently hit the sweet spot where I never got bored yet it was effortless to follow the story. It looks amazing. It has plenty of very different characters yet none of them (except maybe Mineta) felt... too extra (unlike most pillars in Demon Slayer for example). They all were plausible, just very vibrant. The story in the anime seasons I watched so far never employed misunderstandings etc. as a plot device (those are often physically painful for me!). Likewise, the hype has been dosed perfectly so far - enough to get excited and feel with the characters but never unpleasantly tense as e.g. sports series often tend to do.
It really is like potato chips. Not the story with the most depth... But perfectly engineered to hit those pleasure centers in our brains and make it easy to binge a whole season yet wanting more. And sometimes, that's really what I want most.

I started reading My Hero Academia when it hadn't even been adapted for an anime, because I'm a manga-reader primarily. When I started it, I really enjoyed it, but I always thought that it was because I just like superhero stuff and I thought it was kinda niche. When I started hearing more hype about it, I got excited, thinking that maybe my corner of the manga fandom enjoyed it and I could potentially find like-minded fans. Now that it's the juggernaut it is today, I'm so happy so many people enjoy it, and I'm thrilled to be on this ride with you all.

I don't think society failed All Might. He decided to place himself in the position of being THE Symbol. That wasn't pushed on him.

    • @lunayen
      @lunayen 3 роки тому +3

It goes both ways. While he did vie to become the ultimate hero, society still chose to place him on a pedestal as opposed to admitting that all heroes are a symbol of peace.

@@lunayen I think the reason society didn't do that is because a lot of them simply aren't. Like it or not, there's a bit of truth in Stain's words about heroes in MHA. Plenty of them are in it for the money and fame, with helping people and making the world a safer place coming secondary to those motivations.

One other unique thing about this show's villains is how perfect of foils they are to the heroes All for One is the symbol of chaos to to symbol of peace of course but more interesting is Shigaraki and how he is on the villain version of the Hero's Journey a direct parallel to Deku
Both start with a naive outlook on their personal goals and are fostered as successors
This is something I actually don't see often a villain that starts at the same place as the hero, most times the hero must play catch up to villains to overcome them in the end or both are simply fully formed but this gives us a unique look at seeing the villains journey and development in their own twisted ideals just like the heroes
People complained Shigaraki is a weak cliche villain at the start but I think that's the point he has no direction JUST LIKE DEKU but then finds his drive and ideals growing truly into his own after his master is no longer in power similar to deku
Honestly one of the best written hero villain foil dynamics imo

On a side note, if you ever get the time I would suggest Deltora Quest. Not a Shonen Action but a really strong fantasy romp.
Anyways praise to the anime pope and Happy New Year!

Last week's episode had my favorite fight involving Red Riot and it made me realize what I loved the most about the show - it does such a great job of hype-building for any given fight. Yes, the fight isn't quiet as high stakes as All might vs. All for One, it was more emotional to me due to how they staged it and animated and scored it. Everything was just one so well it can very easily bring a tear to your eye.
The way I see it, yes, I wouldn't like it if every single show copied this one. But I am glad that this show exists due to how far it goes to play up its strengths, and I look forward to the anime that take the strengths of this show and combine it with a more unique or focused genre to bring about an overall higher quality of anime as a whole. That, to me, is the real legacy of MHA, that it will force other studios to take their time and increase the quality of all shows.

"Unlike One Punch Man, it's not too interested in critiquing the idea of superheroes." Umm, there is a whole layer of subtext in MHA critiquing superheroes - the whole core of Stain's popularity in and out of universe was that his words hit home, and that's just the most obvious example. Under the basic shonen formula, MHA is asking deep questions about heroism, society, chaos vs order, personal freedom vs civic duty, ambition vs pride, and all kinds of stuff. I take great exception to the concept that it doesn't critique the idea of superheroes. "Heroes are just fun..." Tell that to All Might.

doomsdayng he does get into that but one punch is literally meant to critique hero society in a comedy way. As he said, in op there’s more problems like factions and financial gain from rankings while mha is more combining the hero idea with japan influence

Anyone who loves My Hero should check out the book series Super Powereds by Drew Hayes. It's pretty much the identical setup as My Hero (Super Hero school) but instead of highschool, it's college. The premise of a government approved hero program is the basic setup, but Drew takes a lot of time making it all make sense for the world he created. It's an awesome series, and when I first started watching My Hero, I was seeing a LOT of parallels in theme and structure, which was great. Seriously good series, check it out.

Yeah, your speculation on why it's so special to others is spot on in my case.
I identify deku with my younger self, wanting to help people and make them as happy as I had the luxury to be. Naturally, no All Might came to give me the means to achieve such a childish dream... so that frame and scene when he looks earnestly at deku and says "You can be a hero." made me cry.

I mean we have SO much in common. (Me)
I am good academics but not the best
I can perform unimaginable feats of physical strength that should not be possible with my physique, although coming home with limbs that give serious pain for a long time.( 3 days or so , but if you have a busy school schedule then it's important to be in your top form )
I have been surrounded by god-like beings I try to beat ( academically , physically and skill wise) and is still trying to get ahead of his peers.
These are only a few I can type here but the relatability is very close lmao.
