hey Dennis, so impressive to see that you sailed through lake Victoria. I’m from Tanzania and I used to move from Bukoba to Mwanza by ship in lake Victoria. Greetings from Dar es Salaam
In an alternate universe I can picture you doing late night TV shows. You're a really good speaker. You've got that radio voice and you're very articulate too.
Excellent video, Dennis. I've stumbled upon a theoretical ideal solution: Either of the "hairy troll" muffs for best wind reduction *underneath* a standard interview windscreen for best presentation. Best of both worlds! I just need someone to test if the elasticity of these products will fit and function as intended in the real world, as I don't own one of the troll muffs. Thanks!
Good point. I just tried it, and I was able to get a foam wind cover over the hairy one. However the hairs of the hairy cover wouldn't be able to flow with the wind, they would be crushed down, so I imagine it wouldn't be quite as effective as it would be on the outside. Still having two separate covers over the mic would be bound to help. One reason many dynamic mics are so much better in the wind than the h1 is that when you put a windscreen over them, you end up with three levels of wind protection: they have foam over the capsule, another foam just underneath the mesh of the mic, and then you put a foam windscreen over the top of the mic - three layers. This will surely block out much of the wind, although the more layers you use, the more high-end frequency is lost as well.
Nice Video but the problem is the Zoom H1 pick up the wind on its plastic body. That is awfull. Even with the windshield the body of the Zoom H1 picks all the hand noises and the wind. I have this recorder and I am experimenting things to try to eliminate that problem.
THANKS so much, Dennis! This was the exact problem I was trying to solve. Thanks for looking out for all of us so that we don't embarrass ourselves looking stupid, or dorky!
Glad it was helpful! I have been thinking about starting another YT channel about mics, lights, and cameras, and your comment kinda moves me to start it.
Thank you for the video. I plan to do an interview with the Zoom H1 with my windscreen (furry troll head). Do you know what hz I would adjust to for a windy area?
Probably going to cost a bit more to get something better. My preference is the Rode Reporter mic. But is costs more, plus I had to spend a little over $100 more to get a recorder (Tascam) that attaches to the base of the handle. But with both of these I have a dandy mic that can really take the wind and produce great tone.
I'm not sure you'll see this since it's such an old video but could you let me know the settings you used for the audio? Just got this today and would love to know thanks!
I recorded with the audio on manual (not auto-gain). I believe the setting was around 50. Can't remember if the high-pass filter was on or not, but it should have been.
Indeed! I call it "God's playground" - Switzerland has everything except the sea - mountains, meadows, rivers, pretty villages, public transport that is clean, on-time and affordable, towns that are regularly in the top 10 for "best place to live" and mostly politeness and reciprocal respect between citizens. The beautiful lakes mostly have passenger ships that you can go on - to go to the next town or for a round-trip. The indigenous Swiss don't realize what they have. I have been here for 30 years and am not planning to leave any time soon! Even the seasons are well defined (not so in south England) so Summer is hot (often over 90°F), winter is cold (last week 14°F) and spring (a bit late for my taste) is a riot of colours. Autumn (Fall) is also colourful thanks to the deciduous trees whose leaves turn gold. Well worth a visit if you're visiting Europe. All the best, Rob
I have a superzoom camera and the Zoom H1, because to me audio is more important than image for most porpuses. But now I got some money I will buy a DSLR. I will try a lapel mic to the Zoom H1, then a cord to the camera. Let's see how that goes. And I have a dorky windscreen I ended up never using because of the factors mentioned.
Hope that works out well for you. One nice thing about lapel mics outdoors is that you can attach them with gaffer's tape under your shirt or t-shirt, and you cut out most of the wind noise while retaining excellent sound quality.
It works well as long as you keep the gain low and position the mic close to the face of the person you are interviewing. But if the mic is too far from their mouth, then you will get quite a bit of background noise.
It could be done. Turn them both on about the same time, give a couple of claps before the session, and afterwards line both files up in your video editor, one below the other, and sync together. Some editing software will do the syncing for you, or in other cases you can line up the claps, one on top of the other. If the syncing is off by a couple of frames, however, you'll get an echo effect.
I had the same exact situation... It wouldn't send to my province, so I had to order the Gutmann. I agree that it looks weird, but that will fit in perfectly with my personality lol
Interesting observation. Are you sure that the noise being picked up isn't the wind blowing under the edge of the windscreen and making its way to the mics? One other thing - this mic is so short that with one of my large hands wrapped around it, there isn't much space on the mic except at the upper part for the wind to touch.
"The H1 look more like a taser than a microphone" LMFAO, so funny !
Your narration is superb and at times funny and humorous. Enjoyed the video and had fun. Thank you
I appreciate you taking the time to share such an encouraging word!

remind me of how funny & pleasant my grandpa was . god bless him. thanks for such a good vid
One of the best zoom h1 field test 👍
Thanks, Jatin!
I enjoyed the humor in this video. Great demonstration of Zoom H1 abilities along with wind abatement.

Thanks. I guess what used to be called a "radio voice" is now a "UA-cam voice."
What a helpful and entertaining video! Thanks, Dennis!
You're welcome! Glad it was helpful.
Good video buddy thank you
You're welcome.
Amazing video. Loved the humor, too. God bless your ministry
Thanks!
Looking for reviews... this man just sold it to me. XD

If you cut out some of the low (bass) frequencies that can help.
Nice review Dennis! Thanks!
Excellent video! Very helpful! Thank you for making it.
Thanks. Glad it helps.
This is very helpful, thank you!
Thanks sir , The info was quite useful.
Most welcome!
Keep making videos. You are wonderful.
A great and even entertaining video! Thank you!
Glad you like it!
God bless u too thanks tor the review
This was so helpful.❤️
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you very much for this really good video. It is very useful.
Great review. Do you have any thoughts on an alternative that performs better in all conditions in a similar price range or is it impossible?
Probably going to cost a bit more to get something better. My preference is the Rode Reporter mic. But is costs more, plus I had to spend a little over $100 more to get a recorder (Tascam) that attaches to the base of the handle. Thank you for very good information about the product
Awesome review! God bless you!

And what about the handling noises during the interviews?
Good point. It can be minimized by holding that mic dead-still in your hands, but this mic is not a champion in that area.
Hi Dennis nice video - subscribed! All the best, Rob in Switzerland
Thanks, Rob. You are blessed to live in such a beautiful country!

Good video and very funny sincerity
great video, thank you
Glad it was helpful, Michael!
Thanks for sharing.
How does this product perform with background noise (like traffic/ crowds)?
It works well as long as you keep the gain low and position the mic close to the face of the person you are interviewing. But if the mic is too far from their mouth, then you will get quite a bit of background noise.
super super super helpful!
The "dork" issue is only an issue to those who don't embrace it. ;)
Great video
Do you think I could use two Zoom h1s at the same time for a 2 person interview?
It could be done. Turn them both on about the same time, give a couple of claps before the session, and afterwards line both files up in your video editor, one below the other, and sync together. Some editing software will do the syncing for you, or in other cases you can line up the claps, one on top of the other. the body of the zoom h1 picks up wind so just covering the mic is not enough.
Great video!!
Thanks for the demo. God Bless ya'll too! :)
Your commentary is amazing. 😂
Very nice video! thank you :)
You're welcome. Glad it was helpful!
Great video! Helped me a lot :D
Glad to hear it, Maciek.
very good and funy review.sadly wind tech cannot be sent to spain so i will buy the gutnman funny troll for my interviews outside
Thanks, Alex. I'm sure the guttman windscreen will be a great asset.
I had the same exact situation... It wouldn't send to my province, so I had to order the Gutmann. I agree that it looks weird, but that will fit in perfectly with my personality lol
wonderful! thank you so much, so so useful!! :)
Thanks, Mayra. God bless you!
position your self when you are doing an interview with your back to the wind , can be also helpfull ;)
Good point!
and i use this : nl-be.sennheiser.com/stereo-ear-headphones-earphones-mx-170
to monitor what will be recorded
if you own one try it for your self, add a wind screen then blow on the body
Interesting observation. Are you sure that the noise being picked up isn't the wind blowing under the edge of the windscreen and making its way to the mics? One other thing - this mic is so short that with one of my large hands wrapped around it, there isn't much space on the mic except at the upper part for the wind to touch.
taser 😂. Great review mate
Thanks 👍
way over-killed the wind noise issue.
this guy us cool
just push the lo cut button chacha
Hahaha, I enjoyed the humor too!!
His wife is beautiful. I am getting the Sony recorder as there auto background noise removal. I already have a road mic so don't need this one.
Who cares what a mic looks like?
Seriously.
Great video
Thanks!
