  • This is a very brief video, on a pointer for testing the camshaft timing of the Saturn 1.9L engine. The engine is an "Interference" design, and providing this step can save you a full rebuild of your engine.

Hey Josh, can this be done in the car? (changing the timing chain)I may have to do this. I bought my SC2 in 2014 with 39K miles for $700.00, this is the only major thing I had to do. Great little car. Thanks!!

Yes, you can change the chain, with the engine still inside the engine bay. You do need a jack and a block of wood, for raising the engine. There are 4 screws, that go through the front of the oil pan and into the bottom of the timing cover. It is also recommended to remove the water pump, as there is an alignment dowel pin right next to where the water pump mounts on the block. Recommended replacement are either Cloyes brand or Sealed Power by Federal-Mogul. Depending on mileage, oil pump replacement is usually recommended as well. It mounted inside the timing cover and driven by the crankshaft timing gear assembly.

Im rebuilding an interference motor at the moment. I wasn't paying attention when i took the timing belt off.. And i didn't time the crank. How can i reset the timing without messing up the valves if i haven't already? I know you have to take the valve covers off and undue the cams at the mains. But nothing further then that...

The concept of re-timing a DOHC or SOHC engine is fairly universal, provided the block and cylinder head have timing marks on them. Depending on your specific engine, you may want to consult a Chilton or Haynes manual for the exact procedure. The reason you crank the engine by hand, is to verify the valves aren't hitting the pistons. If you have already assembled the engine, then it is best to remove the timing cover and the valve cover as well as your timing belt. Valves that are hitting a piston will prevent the engine from cranking over, by hand. using the starter motor or running the engine will damage the valves and pistons very quickly, and once compression drops, the engine will stall out.
What is the make/model of your specific vehicle, and which engine option does it have?

I got kinda lucky on my 02 SL Sohc when the timing chain guide broke and the car jumped time. Every valve got bent, broke 4 rocker arms, jammed the hydraulic lifters. The crank and cam spin freely though. I'm doing it shade tree style fighting the weather in Michigan. The car has 365k miles which I only put on a thousand in three weeks from getting it. The previous owner didn't take to good of care of it ignoring problems that needed to be addressed that I'm doing now. I paid $500 cause I'm friends with the owner which was his son's car.

Just get a replacement cylinder head, from a JY, for like $100-150. Most of the time, yards will leave the cams and lifters on the head, when the engine is OHC design.

You would need to buy a timing installation kit from a reputable supplier, such as rockauto.com and it will come with a set of new O-Rings and seals.
It should also include aluminum RTV sealant, which is the silver RTV.

@Pedro Solano Hey bud, You can get the engine from the 2001-2001 Saturn SC2, SL2, and SW2. The "2" designates the number of cams. The "2" engines are 1.9l DOHC (dual overhead cam) and make ~120hp. You want to find a 2001-2002 Saturn SC2, SL2, or SW2. Those are the proper engines for your car. In the video he had the engine that you are looking for. The black plastic cover will say TWIN CAM 16 VALVE.
DO NOT GET THE ENGINE FROM EARLIER YEARS AND DO NOT GET THE SC1, or SL1 ENGINES!

There are 4 bolts that go into the bottom of the timing cover, through the edge of the oil pan, by the harmonic balancer.
If the engine is still installed in the vehicle, then you must use something to raise the engine up to gain clearance to remove the bolts.

@@genekelly8467 Have you pulled the hidden bolt, behind the idler pulley as well, and there are two dowel pins, that hold the cover on. One is near the water pump, and the other is across from that, I think, up towards the intake manifold, I think.
It is difficult to get the case off, because of those dowel pins, and you had e to be very gentle as you rock the case back and forth, to get them off the dowel pins.

    • @Joshua_James_Howard
      @Joshua_James_Howard  Рік тому

With the 1999 model year, you would have the narrow head casting, which was a change from 1991-1998 heads.
I don't think they used a roller camshaft setup until 2000, however, and all of the same concepts should still apply.
The only major difference is probably going to your manifolds, since those were changed and an AIR injection system was added in 1999-2002 for California Emissions compliant models, only.
Federal emissions did not have the AIR system.

      The Saturn S-Series doesn't use a 2.0L Engine.
They came with either a SOHC 1.9L engine, or a 1.9L DOHC
Sx1/Sx models get the SOHC engine.
Sx2 models get the Twin Cam.

@@jc199159 Ahh, ok. Yeah, those are two entirely different engine families.
The 2.2L in your L-Series is actually engineered by GM's German brand, Opel, and was first used in the Opel Speedster over in Europe, before GM started using it I. The L-Series, the J-Body(2003-2005), and the N-Body(2002-2005), and then the Delta platform(Cobalt), as well as the Saturn Vue.
With your specific engine, the biggest issues to watch for are namely the timing chain due to a faulty design with the oil return hole drilled into the tensioner, and the water pump which is driven by the timing chain.
Timing chain should be replaced by around 100,000 typically, though there are rare cases of the stock unit lasting longer.
Water pumps sometimes make it to about 120,000, before they go, typically.
