I'm a little late to the party here, but just want to say thank you for going above and beyond to show all of the downstream effects of the bad crank sensor. would have been easy to just say "oh I heard the fuel pump/injectors, needs a crank sensor" and ended it at that, but you went through the extra effort to show everything else that supported your decision. this helps confirm your diagnosis and helps us learn many things we can be looking for. also I agree with the other comments, I think I might have also learned some parenting skills while I was at it haha. top notch video as always paul.
Thats awesome that you brought your son along. I also have a mini me I tell everyone that he will know more about cars by the time he's 12 than most people learn in their entire lifetime
Thanks for uploading the video you are not only show us how to perform varieties of testing methods, but also reminded technicians that we can have fun on the job and ALWAYS give credibility when it's due for example when you admitted that you didn't hear Beau said '' I see a leak'' you gave him credit for spot the leak. GOOD JOB!
Paul,I've joined UA-cam just so I can post a comment. You are a true inspiration and I can not thank you enough for how much I've learned from your videos. Your dedication is truly remarkable and I can safely say you are the best teacher I've ever had! I am not even in the automotive field but it is one of my hobbies. Keep up the good work and videos and know that personally,I'm looking forward to the next one! May God bless you and your family! Thank you.
At his age he'll grow to not like fixing cars but it'll come easy for him because of Pop. But if he does decide to fix cars he'll really be something special. Learning new things young; you never forget them. At least in my experience. Thanx again for all your vids. Sometimes I'll re watch some while doing something else and just listen to what you're saying, especially during your classes. Keeps me sharp.
Great video Paul! I was about 7 or 8 the first time I helped my dad with his car. Went from there to pulling the lawnmower to bits just to see whats inside. Now 18 years later I do it for work every day!
Great video! I play the saturn games myself. I have a 2008 saturn outlook xr and so far... thousands later 3 different shops and still has the same issue with what I think is loading up.. I also have the 2002 sl1 gem also lol. Very good knowledge, thank you.
Sweet video, even better with the 8 year old tech, Got a awesome tech in the making Danner! I wish I had someone in the family to learn from when I was his age...
That's what's up bruh that's how I learned about cars and electronics period just hanging around my father and just like Beau I would point things out to my and and he would be like "huh, oh it's nothing" and then he would realize what I was talking about and walk away from the car and say "fricken genius" lmao I miss him rip pop. Beau your awesome .... Respect to you SD
PS, Great that your son is getting to come along. As a granddad I have learned that it is the time spent with the little ones that they remember. Regardless of what he does in life he will remember these type of experiences. If you are nearly as good a dad as a teacher your kids are blessed
I wish I was Jo. I let the cares of this world interfere with my duties as a father way too much. Only when I keep my eyes focused on God, can I be the father, and husband, I need to be.
The nice thing about most Saturns is they have a trans pan drain plug. They did something right Who doesn't poke holes in wires? It is acceptable in this field, especially because of accessibility to components. Simply cover your hole with RTV or liquid sealant, or using terminal tools, pull the internals of the connecter apart and slide a piece of shrink tubing onto the little pin hole. I've even gone so far as to rerouting a harness to avoid potential problems down the road. CYA(cover your you know what) and you will be fine. Watch your son become a heavy duty diesel tech, haha. That was simple enough, those are the jobs we love.
that is so cool having your son tag along and instilling confidence in him saying things like I should have listened to my son i love watching scanner danner videos my goal is not only to be proficient in electrical diagnosis but ready to take and master the ASE tests i plan on buying all the material from scanner danner good teacher good guy and wow doing electrical diagnosis at six looks like the fix it talent is in the genes lol i totally expect the new scanner danner someday with beau danner awesome dad stuff !
i have owned over 50 saturns in the last 16 years and this is the first time i had no spark on a saturn i changed 3 peice coil pack andno help idecided to change crank sensor only because i had 1 and it had apurple and yellow wire it took over an hour to install because the starter was inthe way but it fired right up good thing i had 6 engine blocks with a ton of parts i want 2 thank u so much for your video
My name is Stephen, I own and operate Automotive Solutions. I am ASE & Chrysler certified, haven't YET watched the video just thought id throw this out there: In addition to being a Chrysler (dodge,Plymouth,Jeep,Eagle, Ram & Mitsubishi older small cars) Specialist i am also a Saturn specialist and will tell you when taken care of these are GREAT cars i have even owned 5 of them! over the years i have even solved the oil burning problem they have from bad rings (ALMOST 85% success rate on the fix!!) AND it lasts the LIFETIME of the car! i tested it on an engine i installed on a "homemade" engine run stand. I ran the 1.9l SOHC Saturn engine at 5k rpm for 24hours straight and then let it idle for 10hr then ran it through simulated drive cycles (homemade computer controlled program) equaling 200k miles and it was burning .5 qts for every 3000 miles which is fantastic (it started burning over 2 quarts for 3k miles! just thought i would share and let you know if you EVER have any questions about ANY Chrysler product or Saturn just LMK! email me at wholesaleauto239@gmail dot com !
Hey Man, don't bash Saturn. I worked at a Saturn dealer from beginning to end. The original S-series car was awesome. Lots of thought was put into the serviceability of the vehicle. Easy to work on and made good money, unlike today. Unfortunately, I now work for Subaru and do more for less.
hey Dan, It's great your involving your son and showing him encouragement. Too many parents would have him off in a corner with a GameBoy to keep him busy. You have to get them involved as soon as you can. Nice. Great tips also for those of us without the fancy tools out in the drive way. Your wealth of troubleshooting knowledge is invaluable.
Good vid Paul, nothing better than having your own kids out in the garage. I have three girls all of them like to hang out in the garage while im working on someones car.
Sure do like this video not just any video but a spacial video, Dad and son! i have a son about to be 2years old really smart kid i started to see he likes putting things together hope he loves cars as much as i do thanks for your videos and God bless u and ur family:)
Thank Alex. Children are a gift from God for sure. May He continue to bless you to my friend. And may we both remember to live in a way in front of our children that honors Him.
Love it! I have 2 boys and a girl and they love visiting me at my shop :) That shot when your under the car by the starter made me feel right at home, considering all the spider webs dangling and the green corrosion on the starter cables etc.. I see we work in similar conditions lol.
SL==Sedan Level SC==Sport Coupe SW==Station Wagon LS==Larger Sedan LW==Larger Wagon 1= SOHC 2= DOHC If you must poke a hole in a wire some RTV will seal it right up.
This needs to be a segment on Sesame Street. Maybe Beau's Flying Diagnostician School? No. Beau's World! And instead of Mister Noodle we have Mr. Danner. Now you just need a goldfish.
Very cool Paul, nice to see your boy has a interest for working on vehicles, guess it's in the genes, lol. I grew up being around the garage with my Grandfather and Uncle who were both mechanics. Plus I think it's great you are passing on your knowledge.
Great video and very helpful. This is definitely going to help me with a 83 Porsche 944 that I have at the shop with no spark and no power to the injectors.
You say Saturn's are Goofy? Wrong! I've owned Fords Chevy, Dodge & Honda and the Saturn is a SL-1 MODEL 4 DOOR... Which you don't even know that is what you are working on! I have a Saturn 2001 SL-1 4 Door, & is the simplest Vehicle I have ever worked on.(For Anybody Who Works on Saturn's!) Everything is easy access including the removable side panel at the wheel weld to change oil filter & timing belt, starter water pump & Plugs are easy to get at and radiator R/R is a snap.. So Not goofy just different buddy. like remodeling a house, a change for improvements help. So many Car makers don't change things and do not advance & some tech makes things more complicated like the computer which give error codes, They could design where the computer reads the error codes and list in English what part and where it's located pin pointing the problem for the vehicle owner... but THAT'S TOO EASY?... Peace.
Hi paul quick question I have test lamp thats draws 110 milliamps would that lamp be suitable for doing a bypass test on a ac cranksensor like u have done in this video or do I need the red snapon like u use cheers sandy
That would work just fine. With these VR sensors, there really is no danger as these sensors can produce well over 20v at higher RPMs. So the current draw of your test light is not that important here, although you may not be able to use an LED light to do this test. No, come to think of it, I've used my body as the source before with this test, so an LED light may work.
That system all ya gotta do is take both #1 plug wires from the coil pack turn over the engine watch for a spark jump between the two coil towers if a spark is there the crank sensor is good.
Damn sorry got that annoying mobile YT auto post glitch. Anyway SC = Coupe SL = Sedan 1 = Single Cam 2= Dual Cam Since that is a four door black valve cover engine, it's a SL2. Add it to your e-book Paul. Don't worry I don't need royalties :)

I drive a 2002 Saturn SL2 automatic..Saturns have wierd quirks, but if taken care of properly, they are good cars(like checking your oil often). No the fastest, but i get a consistent 35 mpg
This kind of fathering pays off big time as Beau get older. The first memory I had of my father was visiting him in prison. However I turned out pretty good.
If all father brught there kids to work and thyey learned in the real world. That would be ausome. That is how my dad taught me. Confineing youth to clss rooms is not the best way. Good dad. You rock.
help ! will i need to relearn the new (CPS) sensor ? - if so can you share the possible relearn procedure step by step i have a 98 saturn sl1 sohc auto
You can poke a hole once a wile I promise I won't tell anyone My son Brian is seven and always helps me on my side jobs though he gets bore after 20 mins too Great video
nice work, really appreciate your video, but im currenly in school right now. I was told that most sensors (CKP) wires are SHIELDED to prevent electromagnetic inteference, by using that hook tools of yours, u may have shorted the wired, driving the tin shield into the wire. I'm a little confuse by this part.
There are multiple ways to shield a circuit. The most common design is to use a twisted pair. No external shield is needed on this design. An example of what a twisted pair looks like is an ABS wheel speed sensor. So no worries with the issue you described.
I have a 1998 Saturn wagon that will randomly stop running but will still crank. It takes a little bit for it to start back up. Any suggestions. Thank you for your time
my 2007 Saturn Ion would turn over but not start from time to time turns out it was the fuel pump it had a connector in the tank and mine was starting to burn up, it was black and melted and there should be a recall on that particular connection the mechanic said it could have easily caught fire, I had to buy a new fuel pump and also the other part that screws onto the top of the tank that I had to purchase at a wrecking yard because both connections where in really bad shape, not sure if that's going to be your problem but with the mechanic doing the investigating it cost me a total of $700 to fix it, I'm usually a do-it-yourselfer but I really didn't know and I didn't want to buy a bunch of things I didn't need like an ignition switch or a starter or even cutting the white wire car runs great now
I have a 2000 Saturn sl1 ran fine then next morning would turn over bit not start up have ruled out fuel issues can smell gas and hear the pump whirring no spark tested all the spark plugs now have changed crank sensor and new spark plugs and nothing now I'm thinking maybe ignition coil or PCM after looking up possible causes anything would be helpful
+laddiebug87 you most likely have a skewed coolant temp sensor. This is a super common issue with Saturns. The ECT will report a colder than normal temperature and it will flood the engine out. Of course it could be other things to, but check your coolant sensor first. With the key on, compare scan data ECT degree to actual block temperature. The easiest way to do that is to let is sit overnight and check it without starting it. This way you will know without even measuring the block what temp. it is (same as outside air)
No one is perfect but I can tell your priorities are properly aligned. That has and will make you better in every area of your life. Your family and your students are blessed. I am a premium subscriber and have your E book. With a little help from you your brother will make his mark as well.
Paul, If this vehicle had a break in the wire inbetween where you were testing and the crank sensor, would this test not work? Is this VRS bypass test only testing the wiring integrity from the spot you tap into the wire up to the PCM?
Yes this test only tests the integrity of the wire from where you are testing up to the PCM. If there was a break in the wire between Paul's test point and the PCM he would have not been able to get injector pulse or fuel pump turn on. Then he would have chased a wire problem instead of a sensor. In this case since he was only a very minimal distance from the sensor itself, the likely hood of a wire problem between his test point and sensor was very small but still technically possible.
My mechanic diagnosed my car starting problems as a ECM. I already changed the starter & ignition switch. It has been "flashed" successfully. I don't understand all of this. I'm wondering if it's merely a wire or a thing behind the starter. I'm very frustrated.
I have heard about the Load Pro from Dan Sullivan. I don't know much about it but can it help prevent poking holes in wires or is that just hype. thanks
I always have a hard time figuring out what model Saturn Im working on. Most of the time I have to call the Dealership up and give them the VIN number.
Pony Express saturn guide SC-Coupe SL-Sedan SW-wagon IF it has a DOHC engine it is a "2" model IF it is SOHC it is a "1" model so for example a a 1996 Saturn wagon with a 5 speed manual and a SOHC engine would be an SW-1
Hi SD. Love your videos. How do you know that putting a 12V pulse into the engine controller through that test light won't fry that input? Isn't it made for lower voltage?
glad i found this video. My saturn vue is having the same problems. this motor looks like a backwards ecotech probably the same base. My crank is about the starter in the front. pain in the ass to get to. just wondering my test light isnt has heavy duty should it still work? it just has the bulb in it.
Hello Scanner Danner, and Jr. Scanner, I have a 99 Saturn SC2, I went to start it, it cranked right up, as usual, then stalled, which is not uncommon, it did sit for a couple weeks, when I went to restart it, it sounds like all the plugs were removed, like it has no compression. I marked the belt, so it is turning over, but very weakly, and will not start. This car has 60K original miles, and never given me any problems. Any help would be great!! Thanks!!
ScannerDanner I don’t know the compression. This just happened I just bought all new struts i was gonna change out and now this. It is a twin cam Saturn with chain. I first thought the starter went bad it sounded like the bendix was stuck but it turns over with the sound like when you have the spark plugs out. It doesn’t sound like it normally would when cranking over. Sorry i can’t explain it better Thanks for responding so quickly. Hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas and a great new year!!
I'm no mechanic. I know nothing about sensors , scanners, computers, etc. so I have a bit of an inferiority complex. I got a 2003 Saturn Ion for free. It would turn over forever, but dudnt start. I saw on UA-cam something about an Ignition Control Module. I went to a junk yard for my Ecotec 2.2 ICM off a Grand Prix. I put it on (4 bolts) and I never looked back. Its been running like a charm for 4 years. Just luck, I guess. David
waste spark is a term applied to an ignition system where one coil is firing two cylinders. one cylinder is on compression and its companion is on exhaust. the spark that fires on exhaust is called "waste"
ScannerDanner Right, but I wonder if the computer has only the crank signal it can not tell the difference between intake and power stroke or compression and exhaust, So (saw this in one of your videos) there uese to be something like injector group firing, is it the case here? otherwise how is it possible to calculate the cam signal? BTW you got some nice help overt there :)
The cam signal is generated by the ignition module based on the firing KV of the #4 cylinder. When KV is high #4 on on compression, when KV is low #4 is on exhaust. It then "synthesizes" the cam signal based on this. The problem with this design is a bad plug wire will cause cam sensor fault codes. Make sense?
yea, it is goofy for sure. Does this make sense with this design that there were no codes for the bad crank sensor? No crank input = no spark = no cam signal either = PCM does not even know the engine was being cranked
Paul i think you missed your sons funny funny comment at around 19 minutes.. you said lend me a hand here Pete I only have one hand ..Beau says " You are missing a hand ?>" LOL
OMG! I've seen the future of auto repair and it includes another generation of Danners! Congratulations! Best wishes to your son!

Good job Beau. Great test Paul 👍🏻

If all father brught there kids to work and thyey learned in the real world. That would be ausome. That is how my dad taught me. Confineing youth to clss rooms is not the best way. Good dad. You rock.
Go Beau!
Hope you learn and like your dads work so you can carry one the trade.
I hope little Beau becomes a good tech as his dad is,maybe even better.
Thank you my brother put a new crank sensor but it still wouldn't start so hopefully it's the fuses or the starter he is going to test that next
help ! will i need to relearn the new (CPS) sensor ? - if so can you
share the possible relearn procedure step by step i have a 98 saturn
sl1 sohc auto
Got a great kid there helping out.
You can poke a hole once a wile I promise I won't tell anyone
My son Brian is seven and always helps me on my side jobs though he gets bore after 20 mins too
Great video
Great video Paul and beau, just leave the wire with the pin hole it will generate u work in a few years!
haha
Your a great father
nice job the future is near you son will be a good mechanic like father like son god bless bout of you and family....
Thank goodness
nice work, really appreciate your video, but im currenly in school right now.
So no worries with the issue you described.
beau tiful!!! hahahaha no hes gona be one smart fella! im so glad he likes using his head like papa. congrats on that paul.
Beau liked this comment. Thanks bro
I have a 1998 Saturn wagon that will randomly stop running but will still crank. It takes a little bit for it to start back up. Any suggestions. Thank you for your time
my 2007 Saturn Ion would turn over but not start from time to time turns out it was the fuel pump it had a connector in the tank and mine was starting to burn up, it was black and melted and there should be a recall on that particular connection the mechanic said it could have easily caught fire, I had to buy a new fuel pump and also the other part that screws onto the top of the tank that I had to purchase at a wrecking yard because both connections where in really bad shape, not sure if that's going to be your problem but with the mechanic doing the investigating it cost me a total of $700 to fix it, I'm usually a do-it-yourselfer but I really didn't know and I didn't want to buy a bunch of things I didn't need like an ignition switch or a starter or even cutting the white wire car runs great now
It wouldn't have caught fire. Not enough oxygen in the tank to support combustion. Make sense?
Great video Paul!
Thanks for the info, same problem!
nice!
I have the same problem it cranks n it won't start what do I need for it 2 start??
Like father, like son.
No one is perfect but I can tell your priorities are properly aligned. That has and will make you better in every area of your life. Your family and your students are blessed. I am a premium subscriber and have your E book. With a little help from you your brother will make his mark as well.
Thank you for your encouragement Jo, I really appreciate it.
Paul
Poking holes in wires is no big deal as long as you at least throw some tape on it. Some mechanics/DIYers complain over the stupidest things.
JUST AN FYI ALSO! that broken vac line is for the fuel pressure regulator! make sure thats fixed ASAP!
I was rolling when I heard, "Don't do it now Beau I'll get electrocuted!". Great video.
hey paul have seen guys using a big soldering gun to induce activity on those sensors while the look at the scan tool, would that help on anything?
I'll have to try that sometime
Good job Bo!👍
Paul, If this vehicle had a break in the wire inbetween where you were testing and the crank sensor, would this test not work? Is this VRS bypass test only testing the wiring integrity from the spot you tap into the wire up to the PCM?
Yes this test only tests the integrity of the wire from where you are testing up to the PCM. If there was a break in the wire between Paul's test point and the PCM he would have not been able to get injector pulse or fuel pump turn on. Then he would have chased a wire problem instead of a sensor. In this case since he was only a very minimal distance from the sensor itself, the likely hood of a wire problem between his test point and sensor was very small but still technically possible.

couldn't have said it better myself. thanks!
Beau may not know this yet, but he's getting memories that will last him a lifetime. Good job Paul.
Awesome video!
My mechanic diagnosed my car starting problems as a ECM. I already changed the starter & ignition switch. It has been "flashed" successfully. I don't understand all of this. I'm wondering if it's merely a wire or a thing behind the starter. I'm very frustrated.
The "thing" I mentioned was the "crank sensor". I don't know!
I'd imagine you would be! Sounds like you need to take it to another shop. Not much I can help you with without you being the one doing testing
@@ScannerDanner
I certainly am frustrated. The original mechanic quit. I don't think he was up to speed on figuring out the diagnosis
I have heard about the Load Pro from Dan Sullivan. I don't know much about it but can it help prevent poking holes in wires or is that just hype. thanks
Replace CPS (Crank Position Sensor) It is above the starter on the back side of the starter.
I always have a hard time figuring out what model Saturn Im working on. Most of the time I have to call the Dealership up and give them the VIN number.
Pony Express saturn guide SC-Coupe SL-Sedan SW-wagon
IF it has a DOHC engine it is a "2" model
IF it is SOHC it is a "1" model
so for example a a 1996 Saturn wagon with a 5 speed manual and a SOHC engine would be an SW-1
love you Beau!
This is how you raise kids
awesome diagnosing.wishing i had one of those real scanners...lol
Hi SD. Love your videos. How do you know that putting a 12V pulse into the engine controller through that test light won't fry that input? Isn't it made for lower voltage?
Paul, jokes aside, what's the amp rating on your test light you are using to test the CKP sensor?
Not that critical in this case bro. The VR sensors can produce well over 20v at high RPMs. A regular test light would work just fine.
glad i found this video. My saturn vue is having the same problems. this motor looks like a backwards ecotech probably the same base. My crank is about the starter in the front. pain in the ass to get to. just wondering my test light isnt has heavy duty should it still work? it just has the bulb in it.
+Micheal Deacon yep, just a regular incandescent test light will be fine
Hello Scanner Danner, and Jr. Scanner, I have a 99 Saturn SC2, I went to start it, it cranked right up, as usual, then stalled, which is not uncommon, it did sit for a couple weeks, when I went to restart it, it sounds like all the plugs were removed, like it has no compression. I marked the belt, so it is turning over, but very weakly, and will not start. This car has 60K original miles, and never given me any problems. Any help would be great!! Thanks!!
What are your compression pressures? Is this a timing belt or chain engine?
ScannerDanner I don’t know the compression. This just happened I just bought all new struts i was gonna change out and now this. It is a twin cam Saturn with chain. I first thought the starter went bad it sounded like the bendix was stuck but it turns over with the sound like when you have the spark plugs out. It doesn’t sound like it normally would when cranking over. Sorry i can’t explain it better Thanks for responding so quickly. Hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas and a great new year!!
Hey Don Carr... Might wanna get a refresh on your Saturn expertise. Thats an SL2. Did you miss the DOHC?
I'm no mechanic. I know nothing about sensors , scanners, computers, etc. so I have a bit of an inferiority complex. I got a 2003 Saturn Ion for free. It would turn over forever, but dudnt start. I saw on UA-cam something about an Ignition Control Module. I went to a junk yard for my Ecotec 2.2 ICM off a Grand Prix. I put it on (4 bolts) and I never looked back.
Its been running like a charm for 4 years. Just luck, I guess.
David
Ignition control module off Grand Prix = $50.00
nice workout buea i miss my days always dirty clothes in my father garage and he was a real angry man miss u dad
+shahab alam zeb you'll see him again my brother. Thanks for the comment.
Hi Paul, whe you said it is a waste spark system with cam signal calculated from crank signal it means that it is a "waste injection" sytatem?
waste spark is a term applied to an ignition system where one coil is firing two cylinders. one cylinder is on compression and its companion is on exhaust. the spark that fires on exhaust is called "waste"
ScannerDanner
Right, but I wonder if the computer has only the crank signal it can not tell the difference between intake and power stroke or compression and exhaust, So (saw this in one of your videos) there uese to be something like injector group firing, is it the case here? otherwise how is it possible to calculate the cam signal? BTW you got some nice help overt there :)
The cam signal is generated by the ignition module based on the firing KV of the #4 cylinder. When KV is high #4 on on compression, when KV is low #4 is on exhaust. It then "synthesizes" the cam signal based on this.
The problem with this design is a bad plug wire will cause cam sensor fault codes. Make sense?
ScannerDanner
Yep, makes sense, sound tricky but i guess it`s cheaper than cam sensor. Thanks.
yea, it is goofy for sure.
