DIY Head and head gasket installation

  • Installing the head and gasket onto the rebuilt engine block. New felpro head gasket installed. Saturn S-Series. I chose to go with a professionally rebuilt head due to burned and chipped valves. The reason for tearing the engine down was compression issues. New head bolts should always be used.

    I took care to make sure both the block and the head were at TDC Top Dead Center prior to installtion to avoid any mechanical damage.
    Most of my DIY parts and supplies for my Saturn project came from Autozone and Advance Auto Parts.
    I used a Felpro headgasket and put it on clean without any additives as per manufacturers instructions.
    My PCI timing kit came form ebay and included camshaft sprocket gears, crank gear, chain, guides, and tensioners. I had to re-use the crankshaft gear bolts.
    The rebuild head came from a reputable ebay seller and I am very pleased with the quality.

    Good video. Not that it matters unless your still building engines. But before you install the headbolts you want to put oil on the threads and under the head of the bolt on the surface that meets the head. Had plenty of people i had to redo hg's after they installed them dry. Followed the tq spec but cracked the gasket or it didnt seat completely. The bolt heads and threads tend to bind not being lubricated and your tq level isnt what it appears with the wrench. Think like when you have lug nuts with stretched threads on lugs and studs. They spin on only 2 or 3 threads then start to bind. If you tighten them from there with only a tq wrench half of them dont even seat against the wheel but because of the threads resistance from stretching and galling they dont thread down all the way. They just bind.

    One habit I've gotten into with these Saturn motors is adding a dab of grey RTV sealant around the oil flow channels that go from the head into the block. I've had a few head gaskets leak in this area and haven't seen the leaks since I've started doing that.

    I feel you should explain in the video how to properly set the timing as it is very easy to do 180 degrees off. Yes the the timing mark on crankshaft gear was set correctly as shown in your video, but that isn't used as a "lining up" mark for chain installation like on cam gears. It actually stays at 12 o'clock and then lower chain marks "split" the gear at 6 o'clock. It is very frustrating to complete the job and be unable to start engine.
    Excellent video. I am sure it will greatly aid many people.

    Think it was a nice job on video!! I have 2000 SL2 so far it run good 33.5 - 35.4 mpg @ 80mph @3200rpm with a 159200 mile on it. So my problem is the spline between the jack shaft and the outer axle is wearing out replacement time for that.

    i have a oil leak on my saturn sl2 right behind the air condition unit on the head should i replace the head DOHC 1.9 , how do i get the head bolts out with out breaking them?

    I've just completed changing the head gasket. All is back together except????
    On top of the throttle body is a dual plug, a small hose and a large one. The small one goes to the belt end of the engine, across the valve cover, to the gizmo above the A/C Comp. The other goes down thru the intake manifold to I can't find out where it goes. Somewhere above the starter. I can't see where from under the car, or either side under the hood. Can you help me?

    Hello, I got a 2006 HHR to which I had to repair the cylinder head. I don't think it was done the same way you showed in your video. For some reason I didn't feel confident that it was done correctly from the beginning. I used a silicone spray on the gasket because it was recommended by a "professional", I used this silicone but I didn't think it was the right thing to do; I wasn't convinced 100% that there was a need for it; I just thought that the person recommending it new a lot better than I did. Now I get a misfire from one of the cylinders (code #po302), it seems like the spark plug it's getting wet with oil. Do you think I have to put a new gasket? Or you think there is a possibility that the cylinder head wasn't perfectly repaired and maybe I have to take it back to the shop? Could you help me by giving me some advice? I would appreciate it very much. Thank you in advance.

    Awsome video an good info. It helps ALOT!! You definatly need to post more saturn engine stuff. I wanna know more. I have a manual for my car. Which is a 93 saturn sl2, but you can only get so much from a manual. I enjoy videos alot more. By the way do you know anywhere i could buy like saturn repair videos for my car? Like walk through kinda stuff? Maybe ask your highly experienced an qualified friends?? Thank you.l

    You should also lubricate the threads and under the head of the cap of the bolt before you torque down the heads. Good vid nonetheless.

    everything to do with cams and timing in this video is useless, as it does not need to be done at this step..and WILL NOT be done for 3rd gens..correct sequence of events..
    turn bottom end to 3 or 9 o'clock... place head on block without cams installed..bolt down the head...then install cams, cam gears, and pin them down..return bottom end to 12 o'clock...install timing chain

      jesse bravo well. if you care for elaboration from me, here goes. is the video informative? absolutely. but I like to work in the ways of EASE. I do not like things to be more difficult then need be, and I certainly do not like doing things more than once. Doing this process, step by step as in the video, is making things more difficult AND setting some up to have to do the job twice..
      if you were to bolt the head down FIRST, the installation of the cams/cam gears would become much easier in the aspect of torquing. it removes the process of needing to hold the head still, which could also be causing damage to the deck. Now, let's say that this is a 3rd gen saturn 1.9, and you just installed the cams and it is now time to install the head..you will find that you will not be able to install the head. you will need to remove the cams to do so because the head bolts are underneath the cams. sorry if I sound like and ass.

    What the fuck !!! You never use bolts with purposely fucked threads to chase out a bolt hole, perhaps a tap set, lol, why get a professional head job and do a fucked install, why even do a video if you are so fucking poor at doing the job its not even usable as a how to video. Then using plain acetone to clean a rough block surface, that block surface should have been planned, as was the Redone head. I mean I cannot even say how fucking poor this job was, if the past amount was done as sloppy as this part was and the parts to come, well this would be a complete waste as that engine will not last long.

      First off, the threads were not messed up; he simply cut a small channel to allow the dirt and grime a place to escape which if you look at a tap is exactly what they look like. secondly, the only reason for the acetone was to remove any oils or contaminants from the already smooth flat surface, just prior to placing the gasket in place. The idea is to make sure that the gasket is only adhering to the metal and nothing else.

      Look buddy, I am a mechanic, I have taps, they are not simply cut, and in the case of what he did, it would fuck up threads, it would not be as precise as a tap would be.taps are designed and machined, they are not fucking bolds hacked. This would be at best a whacked idea. If it works, and let me say if, it has a 50/50 chance of going very bad, and if someone watching this who had no clue as to what he was doing tried this thinking hey I can do that, and did it and fucked a newly reconditioned head, that should be in the moron that made the video, guys like this shovel bare the responsibility of what that are showing guys. Lastly, the head was supposed to be out of a chance shop, and I also worked in one, before a head is returned, it is cleaned and every aspect of the head is made ready for re-installation. It goes to show you exactly what you know. Even in the worst case event, this dumbass was worried about metal shavings being in the holes, you would not use a tap, to clean holes, that again would be a bad idea, should the metal shaving become trapped in the hold, and caught in the tap, it could do some real damage then. Not even sure I am why I am having this conversation with you, clearly you are not a mechanic.
