Saturn was GM’s attempt to change their well deserved reputation of building poor quality economy cars and they actually treated their customers like human beings. Unfortunately GM is such an inefficient company that Saturn lost money every year that it was in operation. Now, after taking billions of dollars from taxpayers they’re still building garbage cars and treating customers like a STD. I was a Toyota technician when Saturn opened for business and there was a lot of genuine excitement in the automotive industry that Saturn was finally going to show the world that American car manufacturers could build high quality economy cars. Though they had their issues (as all manufacturers do) they were a huge step in the right direction for GM. There’s still a very loyal following to their cars and a lot of them are still on the highway today.
I miss my SL2, I still have dreams about it sometimes (it was my first stick shift). It got tow jacked and I didn't have the money to bail it out. The tow company was nice enough to let me pay $50 to get my stuff out of the car, but their techs stole all my tools, they told me they would never do that, i guess the tool fairy took them then; I left Hawaii permanently after that, if u go to Hawaii, beware of tow jacking, the police and tow companies work together to steal cars and hold them hostage while charging $50/day so after a week or two if u can't get it out they own it. They will actually have a tow truck sitting around the corner with a spotter watching a parking spot/lot, as soon as somebody parks and walks away, they take the car, gone in 60 seconds, and gonna cost at least $250 to get back. HI ain't the only state that does this but in my experience they are the worst.
A few minutes ago I watched a Dodge Neon rebuild video and was impressed that it had main caps like a Hemi wishes it had. And now I'm seeing my Saturn uses conventional two-bolt mains like the ones I'm ashamed of in my Dakota... except at least the Dak uses pig iron for strength. Why does the 1.9 use such a deep skirt block if they're not going to give it cross-bolted mains? They need that much support for the oil pan? I still love my twin cam 1.9, but I was hoping that bit of it would be more impressive.
I have a 2.2 ecotec. Great engine. But, what im interested is is how to fix cold ait in cabin as a result of a cold engine in winter. I put on a cardboard winter guard in front of radiator. It often overheats on highway. I'm told I need an engine temp sensor. Maybe this spring. Any thoughts?
The bean counters like to do away with simple stuff like that. I had a late 90's F-150 that had a drain plug on the transmission pan and one on the torque converter, in later years they did away with both.
This is a unique and interesting slice of automotive history. The Saturn Corporation was a once great entity slowly ruined by bad decision.
That DOHC really was cutting edge for an american company.
Thank you for the upload 👍
Just learned about all of this in class. Makes me glad i own this car too.
Engine comes right out through the top easy on the automatics tougher on the manuals.
I have a 2003 saturn ion. Great beater.

My DOHC keeps purring after 28 years and gets 36-40mpg depending on how much coasting I do in neutral. 😂 Saturn made these powertrains to last baby!
Ill need to remember this

I noticed they still have the transmission fluid dipstick on the older models. My '03 L200 doesn't have one I wish they didn't get rid of it
