  • We will examine the term "Black" as an identity, exploring its origins, significance, and evolution among individuals of African descent.
Many people might think that the concept of Black identity first emerged during the slave trade and colonial times due to the way others saw people of African descent.
However, the roots of identifying as Black go much further back in history.

After watching and reading the comments, my heart just aches because it is 2024 and we still are trying to figure out who we are as a race of people. I love who I am as a black woman. African American or whatever else society sees me as, whenI look in the mirror at myself I see a beautiful 74 year old woman who is very proud of her black southern roots and those beautiful black southern women that raised me along with the rest of my family. The knowledge that I received when I read this history makes me feel very proud to be a part of the wonderful, knowledgeable, loving black community that I was raised in and still am a part of. Thank you for sharing this glorious history of our people.

I remember my dad told me to be proud of my heritage. My mom permed my hair and I was very defiant about my hair that at age 19 I changed my hair back to natural in 2008 ( trust me the hate I get for having a beautiful Afro was not necessary). It's because my father's love for his family of who they looked like that he said be proud of myself as well. This is way before I moved to America in 1999. Yes before the programming racism started to be truly hits my family sense of value and moral. I still have a defiant spirit.
Remember the paper brown test is still effective today, my people.

The name Afruika originated with the Ancient Egyptians. In the ancient Egyptian language "Af-rui-ka" means "the turn toward the opening of the Ka". The Ka is the spiritual double of any person. The ancient Egyptians believed that every person is born with 2 souls, so when a person dies they put food in his grave because his Ka feeds on it. Thus, the opening of the Ka or the origin of the KA means "birth". Thus, "Af-rui-ka" in the Egyptian ancient language means "the birthplace." Since Africa is the birthplace of all human beings.

His-story proves that whenever someone "defines" you, they also "confine" you. One of the most important innerstandings I continue to learn is to be Aware of "What I Am," instead of society's labels of "who I am." Anybody can define a person as a 'who,' but they can't definitively define a person as a "what," albeit they will try hard too. Sounds crazy, but it's real, at least, to me.

Greetings. My only question is if the human species is conservatively estimated to be 180 millenia old, yet white people only 'appeared' no more than 5 millenia ago, how was 'black' as a skin tone distinguished? Rather, what was it distinguished against?
The above aside, the philosophies of Marcus Garvey and Cheikh Anta Diop are the most compelling to me: Garvey due to his understanding that we have only ourselves (black people) to depend on and cooperate actively with; and Diop for his assertions that we need to go back to the Nile Valley value system if we are to return to greatness.
Swahili is an unfortunate compromise, not a collaboration, because we're allowing Arabic language, therefore Arabic thought patterns, into our collective psyche. But if we view Swahili as a temporary measure, perhaps whilst broadening our understanding of Medu-Neter and perhaps Meroitic (a great undertaking indeed), we may be able to create an African identity. This would be better than a 'Black' identity, which, I feel, is reactionary as a response to a label (black) that may not have originated with us.
I admit possible flaws in my reasoning, but it's good for all of us to check our beliefs in order to sniff and snuff out anything unproven. Such was the way of Tehuti in the Hermopolis founding myth, no?

You are missing the point. The origin of the “black people” is from Africa. Although “black people” migrated across the world and settled in places such as America, the unity comes with “black people” being connected to their origin in Africa. No matter where they may be located throughout the diaspora. It is great to celebrate the many cultures and ethnic groups within our people such as the black natives of America, the rich history of the “African American,” Caribbean people, tribes of Africa and so on. But the foundation to our unity, political, economic and social development as a people must be rooted in the one thing all “black people” share which is our divine African origin.

Black literally means mixed of colour therefore Melan and is a reference to Melanesia "Black Islands".🧐
    Kemet means Watchmen.
If there are Black Afrikans then it would be safe to they are Australs who settled in Afrika🧐.
    Its really that simple

@@salj.5459 Sorry but I know this word in over 100 languages and it literally means mixed of color.
It comes from the word Melanated therefore Melan "Mixed" or Melangé.
Your Amerikan crap doesn't work for someone like me.

@@salj.5459 indiaans born in Afrika would be called Afrikaans.🧐
Therefore they would be Khoisan, Fulani, Benin, Hausa and one or two more tribes I can't think of right now.
They all would be Indo-Afrikaanse meaning aboriginies or Blacks.
No such thing as no mixed Black people to ever walk planet Earth because it would be a oxymoron.
And yes Kemet literally means Watchmen hence the reason for the All Seeing Eye
