How Ancient Mali Shaped Modern Laws : The Mandé Charter Explained

  • The Magna Carta is often heralded as the foundation of modern democracy, embodying principles that would eventually shape notions of constitutional law and individual liberties in Western societies.
In contrast, the Mande Charter, or the Kouroukan Fouga, crafted in the expansive plains of the Mali Empire under the leadership of Sundiata Keita, also in the early 13th century, serves as a testament to a different kind of legislative history.

I like the way you not limiting African History to just accomplishments of Kemet, you're showing the continued concept of civilization law and government even after the fall of Kemet in African Societies.

When you realise Mali ruled most of Africa and converting many tribes into Islam. I remember having this conversation with my dad last week about how Mali empire created 5+ tribes and languages from Benin, Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. These tribes are pretty much what made up of modern day Sierra Leone’s tribes; Mende, Temne, Shabro, Mandingo, Fulani etc. They were a formidable force to mess with.

Tha Mande charter must be thought if all African law schools throughout Africa. However the Magna carta should also be continued. This will highlight African superiority in humanistic thought

Very interesting. I noticed that the story of Sundiata Keita seems similar to the King David story in the Bible. I know those people took various stories from Blks, told it a different way and claimed it as their own. For eg. The Trojan war story is actually an Ancient Egyptian story. Look up General Djehuty.

Good job! I have independently linked the Magna Carta to West Africa without deep research, just by being from the Mandé area. In fact Magna is to me Maya in Mandé meaning (humanité or humane civilisation). It’s also the correspondant of the Kemet Maat, which could be read as Marega ( meaning rule of man).

The Mali empire was NOT mandingka people in fact mandingka represent less than 1/4 of the empire. Its a collection of different ethnic groups,eg Fula,Jola, kissi, mossi,Yoruba, bambara, susu, jalunka, jahanka, wollof, serer, sarahule,Bissago etc.

@@six6thdisciple stop lying mandinka is not the only descendants. There's a difference between a mandenka and a mandinka, note the difference in spellings. In my local language bmabara, mandenka is someone from manden, mali. While mandinka is tribe under maden languages. I am a bambara and a mandenka, while you are a mandinka and a mandenka. Let's stop the hate and tribalism. As a bambara who knows more about mali empire than you I have never said things like " we the bambaras are the only descendants of mali empire, " mali was wide and all other tribes are under mali( jola, fula, severe and jahanka).

Law students in RSA know no Mande charter all they are thought of is Magna Charter of Europe. Can you imagine this earliest document on human rights is on which basis is it this isolated. lt is even more comprehensive than Magna charter as far as human rights are concerned. It's from Mali from Africa l think that is the only reason for its isolation. Africa' s glory is always pushed under bloody red carpet they like to walk on to signify their superiority

In law we are compelled to view Europeans as the most legal thinkers the world has ever produced. This is done to make us believe that we had no great thinkers before slavery colonization neocolonization and other oppressive western systems. l sometimes find ordinary African customs being more reasonable than western laws. Definitely there were African legal thinkers who could befit western legal minds such as Gaius, Holmer, Justinian and the likes. Infact this Mande charter is suggest that there were even better legal thinkers in Africa..Afrcans must dig deep to resuscitate their history so that their children can be more proud of their originality .
