Cody, if you put your magnet into a resealable sandwich bag or any other plastic bag (as thick as you can find), you will be able to really easily clean those pieces of black sand/magnetite off of the magnet without having a bunch of those pesky, tiny, impossible to remove pieces of sand/iron, by simply removing the bag. So I've always wondered... a magnet through a copper pipe falls slowly. Magnet through gold pipe? Hypothesis; slower due to better conductivity of gold.
@@japatton6, gold is soft and doesn't oxidize, which makes it great for a connector coating (no oxidation and also the soft metal will deform a little to make better contact) and bond wires (no bad interactions with the substrates). Silver is probably what you were thinking of, it's the only (pure) metal more conductive than copper.

great vid as always man. it's kinda crazy to me as a non american to see just how much lead shot you can find in rivers in the US, i mean i assume the amount of it that leaches off is negligible, but it's still crazy to know that there's just tons of lead shot in basically every water body
I like these videos! I'm grateful that you post old content, as well! It's motivating. Often we look back at older clips, and think it's not good enough to upload, but it for sure is! I have a lot of feelings attached to this, time...
I need to pay more attention, this is exactly what happened in college. I was two and a half minutes into the video before I realized he was panning for gold. I thought he was trying to electrocute fish or something.
Fascinating as always. Surely there is a more modern way to seperate gold in a flowing river with ...? acoustics. fluid dynamics simulations .. always a pleasure to watch.
great video! I am glad you still had the old clips and motivated yourself to make this video. Quite worrying how much lead and mercury there is in the river.
@@teebob21 No. Arsenic or Lead are not ubiquitously in soil! There are areas where toxic elements exist naturally and those areas also have to be handled with care. However humans extracted toxic chemicals and spread them around, bringing them to different places and soils, into rivers and into ground water.
Primitive Survival* (edit: I meant Primitive Technology) recently did a video where he sucessfully smelted iron out of river sand concentrated with a simple riffle sluice. Magentite is apprently really common in rivers!

The gold is awesome, but holy shit can we talk about the amount of Iron you got from the river? That's now a small thing to overlook, especially in a survivalist context. You should harvest iron from the river and make a frying pan or knife or something.
Yeah, I was talking about the stuff he picked up from the magnet, not the lead. Also, I saw the primitive technology video. I thought a more modern version from Cody would be good, using the magnet to fish out what I assume is magnetic metals. Kind of like a "Society collapsed, here is a quick way for one person to make metal tools/utensils to survive." kind of deal. Primitive Technology went hardcore, but I am curious what a modern person with some simple things like that magnet can yield in comparison.

A video from Cody is always a treat. That he's playing with precious metals makes it all the better. To bad UA-cam had a problem with your old mining videos.
Glad to see another video from you Cody. Have been watching your stuff for years and I always enjoy seeing your new video pop up on my feed
Now I have something to watch, always excited for a new video, love from Italy
Cody's Lab is the only science worth trusting
Times weird isn't it big man? I felt the feels for ya.
I am with you Tucker. I was surprised by how emotional I got watching the old footage.
Cody you are a inspiration. I carry a small vail in my pocket everyday with a few tiny nuggets of gold.
I don't look at the Gold as Rich, I look at as remembering the Gold of life. This episode touches me on how much I put aside for a woman.
I think Cody uploading this video tells us one thing. The past isn't so painful for him now.
Good to see you're doing much better 👍
What happened? I've been watching for years, but I feel like I missed something big
@@k20nutz Him breaking up with Kanyon.
Oh yeah, I thought someone died
@@k20nutz parasocial andys are being hella dramatic on this video lol
It's understandable cause they feel like Cody is their friend but I imagine it must feel weird on his end, he's got people he doesn't know the slightest thing about talking about his life like it's a Netflix drama
@@gnatdagnat Agreed. It's way over the top.
LOVE YOU BRO KEEP UP THE VIDEOS ANYTHING YOU MAKE WE ALL WATCH U CAN TALK ABOUT ROCKS FOR STRAIGHT 4 HOURS AND ILL WATCH EVERY SECOND
Saved my Saturday evening, cheers Cody 🙏
It's gratifying work to see the results play out like you expect them to, and can show physical proof in the end... having the gold and other heavy metals shake out to the locations you expect is a nice touch!
FYI, that little vial of gold (0.84 g) is worth around $40. Probably somewhat less considering it wasn't 100% gold.
You sure sat on this footage for a while. I can understand why it might’ve been difficult to continue work on this video given the circumstances. I’m very glad you put it out tho. It’s a great video and your gold panning projects are fascinating!
Great work Cody, I know this must have been a hard edit.
I like how Cody is so genuine. I'd be interested in seeing more gold videos. Maybe that week long trip you mentioned
Love cody mining!
Your intro to this upload is very well done and is superb! Definitely enjoyed the post, thank you. Healthy amount of gold recovered considering the relatively small amount of material washed. 👍👍🤟🤙
So I've always wondered... a magnet through a copper pipe falls slowly. Magnet through gold pipe? Hypothesis; slower due to better conductivity of gold.
It would be faster because golds conductivity is 1.4times less than copper.
@@theCodyReeder really? I thought gold was more conductive because they use it in so many computer chips and whatnot.
I must be confusing conductivity with resistance.
@@DonaldZiems thank you for clarification. Learn something new everyday.
Good Day Sir!
Thank you for this little glimpse into your life yet again. Hope your parents are doing alright and the weather hasn't been too bad out there. Always a good day when I see a Cody'sLab video in my feed.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video and hope you figure out whatever it is you are going through right now!
Had to laugh when you said that was the biggest nugget you’ve ever gotten. I used to pan with a friend in Vermont and New Hampshire, and one day I was all worked up because I’d found our biggest nugget to date. My friend reached down to collect it using a small drinking straw, and drawing it up by inhaling. One minute it was there. The next… he had apparently inhaled or swallowed it! You learn to lower the bar with the whole recreational gold panning thing!
A future MRI could be fatal
it probably came out by now.
Glad to see you back Cody I live by the American river in sacramento la rivera and Howe area I wish I knew you were in town ...panning i love prospecting....
Omg Kanyon was preggo, it all makes sense now. No wonder Cody sat on this footage for so long
Kind of surprised so many comments about Kanyon didn't seem to realize this. The shadow don't lie!
I don’t think she was preggo. Don’t quote me on it
As he said „Kanyon is no longer with me“ he just meant she’s not in the video, right? It’s not that they broke up or maybe worse, is it? It makes me feel uncomfortable right now.
@@core36 they broke it off. It’s been confirmed
Love your content, been watching for a long time. I've been watching for close to 10 years now, and you've always been an inspiration to me. Promoting the use of creative and simple solutions, being humble, embracing your mistakes, don't ever stop. Glad to see you posting some of your old content, it shows how much you've grown.
It's amazing how much lead there was in that small section of river
Why is it amazing to you?
A little bit, but then think he was deliberately going for a spot where all the heavy particles would gather. Then consider people have been all over that river for nearly 200 years.
@@sinisterthoughts2896 oh hell naw
@@iamtheonebelowall just makes me think about how much lead must be in just a couple of mikes of the river. Lot of mercury in that river as well
@@jmpattillo yeah that stuff everywhere it's why we have sealed water pipes that don't let lead leech thru
Thank you for this Cody. I'm glad you did all this work and let us see this. We all know you didn't have to.
Im gonna enjoy this one😃
Old is old glad we see your videos, happy life for you
.8 grams gold is about $40 today.
Couldn't you pour some nitric or other acid on it to dissolve out the sand and other minerals? Probably not worth the effort for such a small sample. I enjoyed the video, as I enjoy all of them.
I believe he would run the risk of making the mercury that's on some of the gold bioavailable. That's not stuff you want around.
@@IceBergGeo the vapors it gives off are already bioavailable. It's also already bioavailable if you get it into a cut or something.
@@thevalorousdong7675 Still, there's a BIG difference between the dangers of elemental mercury (significant but something you can deal with reasonably) and mercury salts and organic mercury compounds - some of which are so bioavailable that getting a few drops on your skin can pose lethal danger.
@@ska042 Or even, in one case, a drop on a glove.
@@davidbarts6144 Dimethylmercury scares the crap out of me.
Thank you for releasing this Cody. I really appreciate this, I enjoy watching you out in your element
great vid as always man. it's kinda crazy to me as a non american to see just how much lead shot you can find in rivers in the US, i mean i assume the amount of it that leaches off is negligible, but it's still crazy to know that there's just tons of lead shot in basically every water body
Thankfully a lot of people are now moving to steel, tungsten, or bismuth shot, either by choice or by regulations
You think that’s bad, just imagine the lead water pipes in Flint, Michigan.
Wish you a good life cody, thank you for continuing produce your content, hope someone can help you resolve the problem with youtube
I've been practicing panning using my cat's litterbox. I have already found some nuggets!
This is a common misconception in litter box panning. You actually want to toss the nuggets as the clean litter is much more valuable.
I thought he was trying to electrocute fish or something.
tbf cody electrocuting fish doesn't seem all that out of the ordinary

so basically running a gold sluice nets you minimum wage
Until you get cought without a permit, yes.
The money is made by making the video not the quantity of gold.
Fascinating as always. Surely there is a more modern way to seperate gold in a flowing river with ...? acoustics. fluid dynamics simulations .. always a pleasure to watch.
Was she pregnant? I thought you two got back together or something. What an emotional rollercoaster. Keep the videos comming. We all love you bro!
great video! I am glad you still had the old clips and motivated yourself to make this video.
Quite worrying how much lead and mercury there is in the river.
Wait until you learn how much lead and arsenic exists naturally and ubiquitously in the soil.
@@teebob21 No. Arsenic or Lead are not ubiquitously in soil! There are areas where toxic elements exist naturally and those areas also have to be handled with care. However humans extracted toxic chemicals and spread them around, bringing them to different places and soils, into rivers and into ground water.
That was significantly more magnetic debris than I was expecting (even knowing it is concentrated river crap).
Primitive Survival* (edit: I meant Primitive Technology) recently did a video where he sucessfully smelted iron out of river sand concentrated with a simple riffle sluice. Magentite is apprently really common in rivers!
@@5thearth Primitive Survival is also a channel that makes provably fake videos.
@@Kriddle1229 crap, I meant Primitive Technology. The Australian guy that does real stuff.

I live about 15 minutes from right where you are - why am I sitting here watching you when I should be out there digging for Gold.?.

man i miss this channel cody is forever one of the best!
The gold is awesome, but holy shit can we talk about the amount of Iron you got from the river? That's now a small thing to overlook, especially in a survivalist context. You should harvest iron from the river and make a frying pan or knife or something.
Check out Primitive Technology's latest video where he does just that!
You mean lead?
@@MerchantMarineGuy I think they're talking about both the magnetic and non-magnetic black sand
@Nezz - yes, but why not work half as much by mining gold and make enough to buy 2 frying pans.
Wow, can't believe I missed this, such an awesome project :) you're so brilliant, your hobbies are so eccentric lol. If you were born in 1880, you'd probably be a millionaire with all these ideas and experiments floating through your head. it takes a certain work ethic to have all this practical knowledge about so many subjects outside your main area of expertise. i doubt many of your fellow geology students had ever panned for gold. or hey maybe they have, it's Utah after all, who am i to say. these videos are all so cool.
Curios of the legality of this.. I know it is since cody is doing it but moreso how.
29:12 little funny non cut there of a retake.
He's about 200 feet on the east side of Sunrise Bridge. A reason there may be so much broken glass is that it is just a bit downstream from the old iron bridge that served from 1910 to 1960.
