      Samantha Lund ha! Yes it is!! Just wait until you make yourself a little pond to drink your morning coffee next to.

      I know the feeling.
      I have culled for 3 years at a breeders. Well a couple weeks a year.
      So all my koi started out at about 2 inches.
      Some turned out nice some were a wash. But it really hasnt cost me much other than my time and the gas to drive there for two weeks a year

      If I lived within driving distance I would be there.
      The place I cull is at Vandameers.. They are mainly greenhouses but they have a fisheries department. They have some decent brood stock. They have two small mud ponds and numerous stock tanks for the fry. The owner , the head of the fisheries department and myself do the culling.. Lol I am the low man there. But its interesting and fun. They do some wholesaling and a lot of retail. They are close to the big city but still 1.5 south of me.

    A nice selection of fish, will look great in a couple of years when the smaller ones have put on some size!
    Didn’t see any Kohaku in your collection, I personally love the red and white combination particularly if they have good skin quality and being one of the older varieties they tend to have really good growth rates!
    What’s your filtration on that pond? To keep the growth up you’ll have to keep increasing your feeding as they grow without overloading the filters!
    I’m currently up to around a pound a day in summer but probably 1 and a 1/4 next year and thinking of adding a “moving bed” to increase my bio capacity!

    • @CapeFearKoi
      @CapeFearKoi  4 роки тому +2

      Thank you, I appreciate that. I do have a Kohaku in the mix which is at the 3:53 mark.
      I’m also looking to get a moving bed and will be getting an rdf in the near future and doing partial water changes every 3 days with feeding 6-8 times a day to maximize growth. Looking forward to seeing how they all turn out. Just got an awesome Sanke a couple day days ago, so be on the lookout for that video.
      Thanks for stopping in!!

    • @ces69
      @ces69 4 роки тому +1

      @@CapeFearKoi Must have missed him, will have another look!
      RDF are getting really popular here in the UK and there is no doubt they improve water clarity massively and reduce the load on the bio stages by removing the suspended particles from the water!
      My 2 main problems with them are:-
      1. Cost
      2. Reliability
      They have so many moving parts and run 365 days a year that eventually something WILL fail!
      When that does happen, will the manufacturer still be in business and will parts still be available?
      If not you end up with a very costly piece of junk!
      So the jury is out for me on RDF for the moment!
      In the summer here when the water temperature reaches 20 deg C I feed around 6 times a day but our summer is not that long, maybe 4 months at best!
      I’ve just started to introduce wheatgerm feed as the water temp has dropped to around 12degC and you can feed that down to about 7deg!
      Also reduced the number of feeds to 3 with the last being no later than about 16.00 hours!

    • @CapeFearKoi
      @CapeFearKoi  4 роки тому +1

      Cost is most definitely the reason I still don’t have one. There in so perfect rdf, but one brand in particular seems to have the least amount of problems and very good customer service. There was a total fiasco the last few months on a certain brand and I will most definitely not be using that brand. I am very attracted to the ease of use and biological benefits.
      I want to grow some big ones and would like to get the best I can afford. I need more revenue from UA-cam!! 😆

      @@CapeFearKoi For cost and simplicity (very little to go wrong) I’m planning on replacing my multi- bay system with the Evolution Aqua Nexus 320 and their Cetus Sieve to remove solids!
      Don’t know if they are popular in the US but are massive here and used by most dealers on their own stocking ponds!
      If you’ve not come across them look them up!
      Wherever I’ve seen them installed the water has been superb!
      Quality Nishikigoi a Koi dealer here in the UK who has a UA-cam channel and does a lot of pond builds has them on his own ponds and uses them on all his builds (check out their channel) some spectacular ponds and fish!

      @@CapeFearKoi I have 36 sizeable koi in a 3,500 gal pond. I dare not add more as they have mostly stopped growing even though I repeatedly backflush the two 250 gal biofilters to get out muck and the growth-inhibiting hormone they produce. I really want two koi, a richly colored Ki-utsuri and a tancho-goshiki but I dare not risk introducing a pathogen into the pond now. I have no isolation pond for new fish.

      @@CCC321 I know where your coming from, I got flukes just over a year ago, possibly from some purchases and despite treatments with the best and expensive remedies available here in the UK they keep coming back!
      I’ve tried repeat doses to kill the new batch hatching but after a couple of months they reappear!
      We are heading into Autumn (fall for our American cousins) and I’m hoping the last 2 dose treatment I did have nailed it!🤞

    Awesome video! I’m thinking of buying a tosai sanke online but I’m not sure how bright the black on it is supposed to be as a one year old fish. I’m looking at 2 different sankes and one of them is still developing black here and there while the other one is pretty much fully developed on the black color. Could you help me decide which one would be better looking when it grows older?

    • @CapeFearKoi
      @CapeFearKoi  4 роки тому

      Vanix sometimes at 1 year old, not much will be apparent, but if you know what to look for or know the parents, you can get a decent idea. Many times at 1 year old, you will only see light patches of gray, but don’t worry, that is black/sumi on the rise and will deepen in color soon. I have a few in my sale pond that have hints of sumi and I think they will be very nice fish. They have been overlooked because the sumi isn’t there yet, but when it does show, they will be very striking fish.
      I tend to gravitate towards young fish that haven’t developed much sumi yet, since there is a good chance of too much black(depending on breed) after up to 4-5 years for the fish to finally finish developing color. If the black is heavy at a young age, more than likely much more will follow in time. If you look at the first Showa in the video, you will see the lighter gray which will develop and may take another year or more. Same with a Showa later in the video.
      It’s obviously all about personal preference and if that particular fish speaks to you when selecting, but these are a few traits to look for if you have a specific pattern or colors desired in a fish.
      I hope this helps and I’d be happy to answer any questions you have.

    • @Vanix_MM2
      @Vanix_MM2 4 роки тому +1

      Cape Fear Koi right, Sanke isn’t supposed to have as much black as Showa. Picking a tosai sanke with traits of sumi is the way to go. Thanks for the information 😊

    • @CapeFearKoi
      @CapeFearKoi  4 роки тому

      That’s right. I’m with you on that one and good luck with your selection! If anything, it will be a great learning tool on how they develop and what traits to look for when selecting future ones.
