- This is the seventh episode of season 2 in this Hardcore Space Engineers Survival Series. This week we build some defensive drones as well as some serious base building. I'm liking how things are coming together, I'm just worried about the reavers.

Maybe you might want to consider running some conveyor lines out from the central base to gun batteries, so that when the Reavers turn up they might not target your home straight away. Plus it would let you hit them from even more directions at once.
Honestly I think that's exactly what i'm gonna need to do in the next episode. I live if constant fear hahahaha. I need to get some underground tunnels set up to some peripheral towers. It will be a good amount of work, but will be worth it when the ships finally do start showing up.
@@MadMavn if you don’t want to tunnel, you could build a small resupply drone!
I'd suggest making the gun batteries a sub grid as well cause tlthen they won't target the base centre but rather the sub-grids.
What about a floating defense platform above the mine ?
I'd also suggest staging the drones to intercept targets as they come in. IDK if there is some sort of hard limit on how far away from the player you can track targets, but the further out the better. Pretend you are an aircraft carrier.
Maybe some rotating turrets for point defense against 🚀
Good call
Idea: build a fighter ship modelled after a revolver's barrel & flywheel, create some sort of fancy display to store it in, then never end up using it until the very last episode.
Call that Chekhov's Drone.
When you started describing what you wanted to do with the floor contraption under the printer my first thought was. "Oh so were just going to shove that cookie strait in no chewing now aren't we." I then paused and went and made popcorn. :P
Could call your utility ship "The Custodian" or "Caretaker" since it helps you take care of nearly every job, no matter what that job is.
Fantastic episode. Really impressive how much you got done on the base; and how impressive the editing and general episode quality is. Especially love the printer setup
Nice job on the green house.
Love the printer wall.
Your Tower not what i was expecting, but if it works.

Watched and 👍 Liked
Zardos mod does the same thing for me as well. You have to grind them and they come back. I dont think its a bug with the mod itself but a game mechanic that processes textures
@Astral Tyrus never tried just to repaint them. Makes sense tho to not lose pressure
Mavn, you do know there is no pressure what so ever from our viewers side.
We'll have fun watching no matter what you do.
The main thing is, for you to have fun doing what you do, so take it easy! 😘
The fighter is a Frog... no question... make it green and go ribbit. The landing gears are the fron tlegs, the bulky back is body and hindlegs, the big mouth are the gun indetures.
Fucking jesus I love this series. Something so relaxing just watching you build on the spectator cam with the music. I literally listen to the same music while building a ring station for an expanse server 😆
7:01 Looks like a bullfrog, make it green and call it that.
That door idea was good I think. It would work better with a simple offset door like 1x1. You just need a small piston and small block to go up. The entire thing on a rotor.
Now it takes so much space and has a huge footprint. The idea was to create a ship on command with minimal footprint on the base.
You should give it a second chance in a few episodes.
Regarding your stairwells, you can achieve it within a 1x3 footprint if you use 1/2 wide stairs and put a catwalk as each landing. Simply build along a wall for stability.
Also, the 2x1 ramp stairs work in vertical orientation just as well as the horizontal.
The utility ship is looking like a Dragonfly ;)
A few things regarding the antennas attracting Reavers - there is a section about when they 'detect' you on the mod's page:
1) They only do if the Reavers are within transmission range of the antenna (I've been using antennas with a range of ~500m [mostly for close range remote access to my base from my ship to e.g open hangar doors, or to recover the ship after stupidly jumping out of the cockpit] and they never attracted a single Reaver, tho keep in mind all [base and ship] antennas must be set to such low range).
2) You can just turn the antennas off to avoid detection.
So my suggestion for you scenario would be: Build an antenna, and keep it at a high range, so if you need it you don't have to worry about that. Then just turn the antenna off, unless you need to fight with your drones (maybe have a button than turns on the base's and drone's antenna at once so you don't mess that up :P). That'll make it so the Reavers won't come in like flies to a light, and you still can use your drone if you need too.
The Reavers should leave you alone unless they get too close (sth like 2.5k - considered 'visible range') on their own.
Also: Great work, I've been really enjoying all of NSS/NSSE so far!
Loving the series so far. Just caught up with the whole thing and this is the 1st episode I get to see on the day of the release. Keep it up.
Of all the space engineers' videos I've watched, you have the best-looking bases.
Thought to throw in an idea for another 'staircase' which is using a gravity walkway. Don't quite know how well it would work in the little bit of planet gravity but I always find it fun to use. Curved ramp onto wall with gravity pulling you down to the wall and just extending as far up as you need.
honestly, putting a survival kit and a small airtight space in a building ship is a genius move
It needs some neon...
which part?
@@MadMavn the drone. Anywhere... It is like your calling card.
Suggestion:
How practical is it to create a drone that is essentially just floating platform above your base that is armed to the teeth? With dampeners, the platform could be a first line of defense against the reavers, giving you time to get your drone out. It might be costly if you get a lot of attention, but with two or three loitering above your base, you could have "orbital defense" at your disposal. Make them remote controlled so you can return them tonthe base for rearming/repairs
@@MadMavn All of it?
Hello and welcome back NSS I have missed you
I noticed no spoilers at the start of the video, thank you 😊
For future reference where it could make sense, you can also build off a hinge for the same reasons as a rotor.
You do build some gorgeous bases
!
Should rename your channel to Mint Mavin, because this series is mint
Yeah I like the idea of ditching the beams above rooms for signage but replace with windows and signage
Reinforced conveyor tubes are airtight on at least two faces. It matters which way around you place them.
Your bases are incredibly inspiring! You sounded down on the radio tower at first, but I just wanted to say that everything you make ends up breathtaking and I appreciate seeing your process!
Round glass blocks are a thing since last update and would be super neat for a Subnautica-esque glass corridor.
You might want to consider a fallback room that has the gear and reserve oxygen you need to reseal massive damage to your base. Some Reavers DO have warheads and DO kamikaze style attacks as well as regular. Plus some Reavers missile barrages seem unending.
self welding turrets + projector 👍
Those drones could be called bullfrogs, kinda look squat and chunky like them. Or to keep with the aqua theme with the manta, call them stonefish
I still think the engineering room needs another two stories.
You can never have enough processing or manufacturing. Particularly when you can mine quite so much.
Also doubling up the acceleration and deceleration thrusters on that drill would probably save you trouble eventually through not having an accident.
Now that I think about it.
Those doors on the floor.
If we place one vent down there you can have a fortified battle station in a secure space and a bonus health station.
Only complication would be some kind of ramp to get out again when the base eventually gets damaged.
Although we could just install an airlock and a staircase eventually
Your such an awesome builder!
Best episode yet 👍
So when you don't name your utility ship then you have to "name" it "Still Unnamed"! 😁😉
Nice design of a drone, the weapon design I'm gonna try next time I build. Gatlings that are so close together imo is devastating.
Something to think about and hopefully I can explain it well enough. If you lose your camera it's basically game-over for it, what I do is add two, what I call, "Tales" which are tiny sacrificial 1 block+ wide (sticks) coming out the back diagonally of the ship/drone (makes it look like a "V" shape when looking at it from the front) about 7 blocks long. At the end of these tales is a Decoy, both tales are made of heavy armor, looks like V shape with balls on the ends and becomes two alien looking antennas and a forward facing Camera on each end. E
immediately
EDIT: ^ wait what... youtube comment just cut out half of what I said. I said 2 more sentences after saying "facing Camera on each end." I didn't even use the word "immediately" and I didn't copy everything and I can't remember the rest of it but everything looked fine until I reread my post and it looks like that... so I'm just gonna leave that abomination there. Hopefully that's explained enough LOL
I'll just add, each decoy is covered in heavy armor and the camera sits on a heavy armor block in front of the decoy and all my camera based ships for years have these "tales" and I never had a ship render useless because all the cameras were destroyed in combat.
When the Reapers come and smash all your drones to bits, the printer will prove its worth...
The first vehicle I thought of when I saw your drone was an old Buick, 😆
just watched the whole series over the last 3 days. IT IS AWESOME!!!!
I really love the style you have developed. Although, I kinda miss the more funky music from the beginning.
Silly idea: put the antenna underground at the end of a tunnel away from the base on a subgrid. So the reaver's attack that and not the whole base
Man, large grid conveyor passages would be so nice...
Personally an engineering bay is where all your ships are built and repairs are done functionally. So the first thing you always build is engineering.
The bull frog fighter!
Do reavers detect laser antennas? You could have a small and cheap comms satellite parked above your base with the radio antenna on it, and then connect to the satellite via the laser antenna. That should still allow you to control your drones remotely
Something of note about ladders, the new ladder shaft blocks (or whatever they're called) can be scaled really quickly by just looking up the shaft and spamming the f key. It's not as immersive but it's fast and reletively elegant. You can do it with normal ladders too, it's just a little more risky.
your printing arm thingy look really cool ! You can be proud of it !
Actually, now that connectors don't require power, I slap a connector down as my first block. That way, if your ship uses hydrogen thrusters, all you have to do is connect it using build vision or a control panel and remember to stockpile your tanks after your ship is built. You'll be good to go right away, no grinding or alterations required.
that auto printer setup might not be as useless as you think, you just set up the potential for a proper basement!
So control tower huh? You may want to consider an express lift as reavers don't give you much notice. Or you can have fun running up the stairs while stuff explodes around you 😉
the printer doors are cool and it does work, I'm sorry for your suffering in the making of it.
Eyo new nsse let's goooo
You really should throw some huge floodlights up and around your base exterior... that way when it's night, you can still ... well... see (both pointing AT the base, and at the surrounding area)
while the doors on the floor are cool, I think a robotic arm in the ceiling would be more interesting, it would also help make the ceiling look less empty.
still love this series mavn! hope you are enjoying it aswell :)
@madmavn will you ever upload the utility ship as a blueprint? I’m a big fan of it!
Would definitely put turrets on top of the control tower
Memory says you already have a production droid in the engineering bay, so a combat droid in the control tower would make more sense.
It wouldn't hurt to put a backup cockpit somewhere wired into the base's conveyors so if the base does get catastrophically depressurized you still have a safe space to control drones from.
I have to recommend this, since you probably will need this advice, but go watch some PvP combat tutorials, mainly about dodging turret fire. There's some great techniques that should come in hand and give you that edge during combat against NPC ships.
mavin next time you might want to lock your targets when using the turrets keep going I love your videos
Build in a warhead, if the drone runs out of ammo then set it to intercept and the warhead does the rest
[X] Successfully defended against an attack
FINALLLLY
Hi Marvin,
Know I’m late to the party but that Timelapse music is there a way to get the list cause some of your music tastes are superb and would work well when on the grind.
Sincerely,
Mr.E
nice
A tunneling / welding drone would save you a lot of grief.
I am unsure of your choice to fight the reavers with regular antenna-controlled drones. Most other types of NPC are ok since they don't care much about beacons and antennas. In my games in space, there are usually more than 1 Reaver at a time so while you are fighting one reaver the others will come to take a look at your base.
Maybe having the regular antenna at another position underground and connecting to it using a laser antenna would work?
Rule 35 of Space Engineers
If you imagine it. You must make it
I didn't put in any of the effort, but the projector pit thing is dope af, so as a viewer it was at least worth it.
I can't understand how you can just say to yourself "oh I'm going to go, without a suit, without oxygen in a -200°C environnent,
but that's ok, it's only for 20s...
Get a weapon mod on. Like Northwind or akid, or mexpex. Just for weapon variation and options
I hoped till the end, that you gonna make piston elevator hidden in the floor
OK sir I have thoroughly enjoyed Benj watching all of your series to get caught up on both this and skyjack I love what you are doing.. Unfortunately most of The Mods you use I cannot because I'm on xbox I thoroughly hope one day they get that fixed where we can all be able to use the same things
Entertaining as always! 👍
Was this recorded before the vote for naming the utility craft? (Switchblade won the vote)
(edit:) Yes - the first part.
Hey! Keen twitted your thumbnail and episode!!! Go give some love! Also teaser for the new block on a more recent one?
always love the episodes, but something I've always wondered why do you use pistons for the vertical and overhead parts to the mines? as far as i can see you have no plans to ever retract them back to the base?
Id love to use the Zardos connectors personally, but every time i place them, my game crashes.
Should be able to slip an antenna into the crawlspace of your new tower with the vents. Nothing else, use a small grid antenna off a rotor for compactness.
It would look a lot better - and probably print faster - if you pointed the drone vertically instead of horisontally when printing it.
How are you placing the blocks from your utility ship ?
Did you put an antenna in the coms tower?
Bread
How are you placing blocks from inside the ship?
I've been wondering if having a add-on to the suit that will give you a small oxygen supply for short term.
I'd like to know your opinion on the subject or if it would detract from the challenge you have set yourself.
Instead of a fighter try building a small large grid tank with a custom ball turret but instead of an auto cannon cluster use a small grid assault cannon cluster so it Acts as a shot gun blast
I noticed the strangest thing.
The NPC droids seem to animate, but only on your spectator camera?
I feel you have just half the amount of guns that are able to fire at anyone wanting to attack you. since they can no longer defend THROUGH the new command post on the roof
Why dont you just make a piston elevator that comes from the ground?
elevator maybe
Go test the drones.
Hey Mavn, been watching this series for a while now. It pains me to watch you struggle with scaffolding just to change something inside your base. Perhaps you could throw together a small scissor lift type rover with cargo space and a survival kit just to drive around and build in high places with less trouble.
May be you should put combat android instead of production on that combat drone and turrets control tower?
На видео не совсем понятно, но кажется что был открыт шлем скафандра.Смерть наступала от удушья и холода.Как можно ходить и что то строить без шлема в безвоздушном пространстве?То есть зачем было открывать шлем?
How are you
good, and how are you?
Im good thanks
In the command center why not the weapons Android?
Airtightness still bugged on servers?
You are early
why not create a lift/elevator, using a piston to get to the top room
Not gonna lie, I don't care about the no suit survival. Bring on the reavers
