- This is the eight episode of season 2 in this Hardcore Space Engineers Survival Series. This week I finally face off against the reavers and get to use my new defense drones. I also learn a valuable lesson, the hard way, at the end of the episode.

This episode may have ended off with a crippling blow, but it is failures like this that reveal our shortcomings. One cannot simply restart or rebuild without learning from a prior mishap, and when dealing with unknowns, failure is the best teacher. Learn from this, so that you are prepared for those unknowns.
1: Put Mauler into the Mine and Cover it up with heavy Armor! It's your only long range Ship so keep it out of the fight!
2: Grinder Pit. It will save you tons of time as Reavers will be coming and the place will be littered with pieces.
3: heavy armor drone launch bay so you can quickly launch drones as it won't need to be air pressurized but it should be able to withstand heavy firepower.
heavy armor launch bays with printer for automatic restocking of drones, and one repair/parking for "last used drone"
I like to imagine that bunker construction tunnel dual purposing into an emergency escape vehical hanger. Maybe the Evermore.
wow these new reavers are a real threat. love to see actual enemies in SE, makes you think strategically instead of just building stuff in any order
Finally! 30min ago I checked your channel and was like "Damnit Mavn, it's time for NSS! Be a bro and publish the content."
And you came through, being a bro, releasing the content. Cheers.
🤣
When I saw the title my heart sank, I was relieved when the drones were seemingly the main loss, I wasn't ready for that ending 😢
18:00 - the (unnamed) space miner has a connector on the bottom. Because it turned turtle when it crashed, you could theoretically pick it up with the connector on the bottom of the switchblade.
You may need a protected smaller hangar just to keep the drones safe in case of an attack, also maybe a grinding pit to savage all that wasted material littering around your base ?
old mine seems like a good spot for salvage pit
The tunnel into the bunker looks useful to hold the drones and a backup welding ship/cargo/refinery setup to perform repairs and maintenance of the rest of the base
Also the base desperately needs some better defended towers to remotely attract and fight off these Ravagers, placed nearby for mutual support, but ideally not reliant on each other for continued operation, and ideally with lights connected to their ammo supply to light up green when over half ammo and red when below 1/4 to make reloading easier.
Ideally with a ammunition truck drone designed to draw the ammo from the base from port A and insert into turret blocks with port B.
For added benefit, stick holding clamps on the base of each turret and use Port B to shuffle them around the base when expanding or planning a big build.
With a ring of heavy turrets, ravagers will be facing a wall of fire whenever they come, and ideally focus on the smaller less important turrets when attacking instead of ships/base/hangars.
But can we make the turrets evade slow projectiles?
What if they rotate around their clamping point? So all the interesting and attractive elements of the turret are 5 blocks out and rotating fairly quickly with a solar panel on the connection rod, so when trying to lead the 'middle' or 'valuable' blocks the projectiles will either hit empty space, or shoot a ring around the turret mechanism.
Not a hangar. The depressurization time would be devastating.
I'd just put them in several small garages around the base. They should be mostly fine as long as they have a roof over them.
@@Pystro the hangar doesn't need to be pressurized. it can literally just be a defended parking spot
@@danilooliveira6580 Ah, you meant the earth definition of hangar, not the spaceship definition of hangar.
Below grownd hanger for the mauler and use the hole you made for the bunker for a drone bay maybe? 👍 thanks for the video
MORE.... NO SUIT SURVIVAL
low key my favorite space engineers Playlist.I love your content maven. thank you for the time and effort you put into your video. 😊 😃 🤣
you might need an under ground drone bay and a place to park the mauler
oh shit Mauler :(
This is like one of those The Expanse episodes where they lose a ship and it's not like scifi that they just make another one and everyone teleports out before the doomed ship explodes. This felt like a real loss
Rest in peace, Mauler. That's probably going to be a big problem.
Place a warhead inside the disposable drones so, when you finish the ammo, you can kamikaze onto the rivers
@MadMavn here something I have notice in this video…
Mauler got hit by both Reavers and your own defense grid.
So a few ideal to help you
1) if the mauler could sustain flight, even if just barely then create a underground closed hangar so you can fixed it.
2) create independent “sandbag” type defense with a single turret or a few turrets flanked by decoys covered in heavy armor, peppered those sandbag around the base within you main base effective weapon range to draw most of the enemies weapon there and not on you main base.
Man what an episode, now I can't wait for the payback for the Mauler
05:00 - I like the combination of hand building with a welding wall - I've given up a few series where they just constantly just printed things they built offline in creative and this seems like a good middle ground of seeing how it was made without having to ferry parts for hours.
For the antenna, you can safely turn it on with 2km range.
Reavers will detect anything in that range regardless of broadcasting or movements. Up to 5km they detect movements and up to 10km they go for signals from antenna or beacon. (verified with experience and source mod description)
You are limited to 2km Range this way but, at least you can react immediately without turning on antennas on base and drones before. Less stress when the ravers give you heat and you could set up Andronio for mining as well. :)
That reveal/realization on the Mauler was damn cinematic tragedy. Combined with your ever-perfect soundtrack choices and the close-without-closure ending, I'm sitting here with goosebumps feeling like the empire just struck back.
I love this series so much
I swear you have some of the best editing for your series. That cliff hanger ending. *chefs kiss*
Finally, after so much time, I've seen all the episodes thus far, and I can't wait to see the rest of them! I enjoyed this very much.
Mavn if you go ahead and rebuild I recommend a massive hanger for the big ship AND start expanding with more defence towers and larger towers with more guns.
I'll be honest those large grid Reavers are small, there will be larger ones to come. (like 2 to 4 times the size of the base)
for your drones to survive a driveby in the future have them behind a hatch, your guns were actually contributing to the damage to the mauler, as the reavers come pretty close build your own turret config with welders inbuilt.
ayyyy it's that time again. Thank you Mavn for spoiling us with these awesome vids
I can't believe that noone still explained to you the "baiting" mechanics, but essentially enemies chose target blocks based on the number of "Computer" components inside them, that's why the antennaes have so many computer components in them, therefore picked first by the enemies. The same trick you used for the lightning you could use for ships too, an antenna or decoy with a welder under, all fire will go there.
Second thing i'd suggest is a grinding pit, basically like the welding pit, just with grinders, so that you can drop into it debries of ships, and you'll get back materials, since you'll be getting more of them if you keep getting attacked! ;)
Your base needs more sacrificial gun posts around the base perimeter. It’s more resourceful as they distract incoming ships while base cannons can lock on and fire at
Seems like it might be worth building yourself a simple airlock system for the hangar bay so you don't depress the whole base every time you enter or leave in a ship, and it doesn't take so long to cycle. Should be easy enough to just build out from the exiting door however many blocks it takes to comfortably fit the length of your various ships, build a copy of the hangar door at the far end as the new exterior door (making the exiting one the inner door of the airlock) seal it and pipe in a handful of vents into the new room and just permanently set them to depress.
That way when you leave you just shut the inner door behind you, the chamber should depress itself then you can open the outer door and leave with the base still fully pressurised. Then when you come back, you just shut the outer door behind you, open the inner, and you're golden.
You can get fancy with it by using sensors and timer blocks to automate the doors and vents, but I've found it's best to keep it simple with just manual controls. Usually with an antenna on the base set to a range of only a few hundred meters so you can always open the doors remotely when you're home without giving away your position (no clue how that interacts with the Reaver mod though!)
Make the button that depressurises the base also close the doors to the side areas to save on venting time. Also a emergency depressurisation routine where it just flushes everything and opens the doors for landing might make sense in certain cases. Good show.
The music make this feel like some rebal Galaxy. Good stuff
You should make a grinder pit for the remains of some of the ships, including the remains of drones and the remains of reavers
Really need to make additional forts around the base, you have all your eggs in one basket. and a Hanger pit for the replacement Mauler.
So. About survival and redundancy.
Ammo lines should be fed into a seperate if small box. Fed itself by a inserter to ensure said box is kept full.
And this isolates the primary ammo storage from bulk cargo, while you can carry extra ammo into the bulk when expecting a long journey.
my suggestion for drone positioning is to make use of the tunnel you dug to build your bunker to make a separate, non-pressurized drone storage hangar
also, personally for the mauler, I would make an asteroid dock for it with no antenna nearby in order to avoid it getting damaged, and have a small shuttle vessel to go between it and the surface
The July update to SLL was to fix the hydrogen generator balance because Splitsie made the mod before Keen changed the way Hydrogen and Oxygen are created in the Wasteland update so the mod was eating Ice like 30x faster than he meant it to.
Our threnody for the lost shall echo through the asteroids. Regrowth will prove your strength greater than ever.
Yer those Reavers are no joke in there big ships.
Watched and 👍 Liked
That fight base vs reaper looked really epic
Oh as you're doing the naming of grids in the terminals. There is a plug-in that allows for this to be done quickly and easily. As for downed craft, Grinder pit?
We can rebuild it. We have the technology. We can make it better than it was. Better. Stronger. Faster.
The drones need a covered overhang so they're protected when not in use.
And if they're disposable you can maybe print kamikaze drones.
Just have warheads armed via sensor when it detects an enemy ship.
Or maybe just a ridiculously heavily armored decoy drone that can fly near the enemy and draw fire while your base turrets dish the damage.
In my years of life I’ve learned that fires always look worse at night, injuries always look worse at sea, and everything looks more dire when you’re tired.
Without fire, the phoenix is just a bird standing up. You will rise from this and have a newfound focus.
the use of the lens flair setting was amazing
Salvaging material would be nice but yeah some sort of hanger at least for the drones seems necessary now, even if it's not pressurised.
Though one idea I saw that I liked was using the newly dug bunker hole as an hanger opening to launch the drones from, I like that idea, it would also be cool to see a large door opening from the ground an d then the drones could pop out.
It's also looking like the base may need a few more large caliber guns, especially now with your main ship damaged and then also what if it goes down or something. Some sidewalls could be useful in case of attack but might also be harmful so idk.
I also agree that some spread out turret towers might be a good idea, even if they're separate from the base temporarily or permanently, give them more things to focus on and hit them from more angles.
You do have quite the task of recovery ahead of you, good luck!
I finally got a PC and am able to Play space engineers. Was looking through mods and videos to find how I wanted to break from the classic SE experience because to be honest it's really safe, and I enjoy suffering. Episode 5 of your Eroupa chapter popped up, and I have been hooked since. Been binging from Helgan since this was uploaded. Learning alot from your adventures, and I think I might try this after I become a bit more experienced.
This stuff is awesome man. Also I can relate to every single stupid crash you have.
You're crazy man, lol. Wait till you see the big reaver ships, they're pretty nasty.
F to Number One and Number Two. One served well. The other served at least as decoy (or collateral damage 😅 ).
You'll need bigger guns on those drones...
You may want to set up an external grinder pit that feeds into storage to dump salvaged drones and enemy craft and recover valuable components, especially if you're going to get regular large enemy ships coming in
Hey, if HQ decides to send in a temporary repair team you know that we're all standing by.
Epic episode!
I would recommend going in full military.
Well, I guess the next step is what the next step was in the first half of the video (before a bunch of priority changes happened). Print 2 more drones and build more towers.
Secondly, "Sometimes a ship is half dead, and sometimes the same ship in the same condition is half alive." (you can quote me with this). Even if you don't have a blueprint, you seem to have one perfectly intact side left that you can just copy over.
Thirdly, I found a flaw in your bunker access design: If you're in the observation room while the hangar is punctured (or the hangar doors are just open), you'd have cut off your path to the bunker. Unless you put the bunker entrance into that pillar specifically for the reason that you can burrow up through the pillar into the observation deck.
In this attack, your base (specifically the large hangar part) barely escaped getting punctured. Or will you always be remote controlling your drones from the bunker?
4th point: If you put your antenna onto the communications tower, it could get taken out quite easily, rendering ALL of your drones useless. Maybe sticking a backup antenna into your bunker access tunnel could be a good idea (it wouldn't be as unrealistic as the current one inside a metal box, but also not unprotected). Or maybe the second antenna can go under one of your overhanging roofs.
idk why but I really enjoy the intro music
You need a "scrap pit" to help on resources using all the debris out there
[ ] Build an underground bunker garage to park and rebuild the Mauler [its your way of planet]
[ ] Create Grinding pit to recover resources from wrecks
[ ] Build a series of small defence towers further from the base with burried beacons to take the hits
I don’t remember if I mention this before but by adding a vending machine in your base you can purchase food from it with space credits… even the luxury lunch that fill you up to 112 or 150 and coffee will get you up to the same amount for thirst. And a nice bed will get your stamina up to that degree too.
Ps there is a beautiful addon to the daily need mod is a mod called DNSK mk4 + Distillery = Space “vodka” ( Plug-in)
Poor ugly duckling.
I probably would have been quite proud of it, but I only make function only stuff haha
Next move grinder pit for drone and reaver wreckage?
Put the antenna on a separate grid (not a sub grid) under ground.
Preferably away from the base, link it with connector's because the reaver's aim at center mass of the broadcasting grid
RIP Drones 1 and 2, RIP Mauler.
at least the Evermore is fine! I sure hope it stays that way :) Anyway see you next episode
Don't tell me it was the evermore.... DONT FUCKING TELL ME IT WAS MY BOY
I'm glad someone else is as emotionally attached to the named ships as I am hahahahah.
@@MadMavn WHAT THE HELL IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN!? OH GOD IT WAS WASNT IT, I CANT STOP WATCHING NOW
It's interesting, it took over 2 years for covid to finnaly catch up with me but it really isn't harming me that bad, just a cough and so forth so far (I am young) but a good video to watch been college work goes a long way to help.
Also, since the mauler has been heavily damaged... welp, now time to build either a massive hanger or underground bunker solely for the storage of the ship.
Same shit happened to me this past week only sick one day but I sure tested positive! Hopefully you get better GOD BLESS!
@@josephc.evancho1661 Thanks man, I appreciate it. Yeah. I don't know how I got it, I always wear my mask and got the shots, but I guess I waited too long on that seccond booster. My parents now have it aswell but all I can really do now is let it run its course. Hope you feel better to my guy, stay safe.
Time to build a heavy corvette!
I'm 5 min in the episode and i already got a great name for that new ship. The Coffin. Starting to wonder what is worse, Reavers or the thunderstorms
you need to adjust the firing angle of your cannons. they were hitting the ship.
Make small silos to hold the drones and connect the silos to the bunker.
@MadMavn, you might check out Splitsie's Assertive Aquisitions series, he showed how to keep Izy's script from pulling stuff out of a docked ship. Great content, keep it up!
if you set the range of your antenna to like 1000 meters you can use remote controls near your base while not attracting reavers
Well I have a name for your dead ship. "The Brick". And you should build a small drone vacuum for sweeping wrecks.
RIP Mauler 🪦
As much as it does hurt to see such an important ship in the fleet be damaged to such a degree, it is important to remember that she already served her purpose and is well past her prime. All we can and must do is move on and rebuild from scratch, avoiding all flaws of the previous design.
You should make a grinding pit with all the scrap around the base.
Mavn, you got a typo in your "To Do" list. Love the series. Can't wait to see your travels to new, strange worlds. Hopefully you consider my idea for creating a settlement to take with you to the next planet. At the very least, preload a few cargo containers with what you would need to get started.
Boss, Can you build us a small grid-deep space probe Like voyager 1. Send it back forwards toward a new possible colony site just in case you fail. You can get much better acceleration than a giant equipment-laden colony ship. You're not planning to fail but if you fail to plan then you're doing one and the same.
On this no suit survival it would be cool to have a very small AI drone ( idk of AI blocks were around when this was made) set to follow you with a survival kit on it so you could heal while outside and close to the base
Very sad episode. But we shall rebuild, we shall persevere! And we shall continue to forget the name of the Switchblade!
ooooh! call your new ugly ship the slug!
I know fuck all about space engeneers, but I know a bit about static defence. The drones are a good idea, but you should look into an early warning system. That way you can engage the enemy further out from your base, reducing the odds of something blowing up. Also, if possible in SE, look into missiles for last line defence. You might alos benefit from setting up outposts about a kilometer away from base in all cardinal directions, to nibble at the raid as it comes in.
got an idea let me pass it by you.
Part ONE. your group gets stranded on a planet after a hyperdrive malfunction puts you in low orbit. The planet is vacant except for the rare maintenance drones that have gone haywire over centuries of neglect. The planet had evacuated to another world. You learn the moon has been on a collision course and to prevent accident the civilization had set up an array to block hyperdrives and the only way off world is a gravity relay orbiting the moon. on aproch you realiz the Grav-Relay crashed on the moon but not alls lost as it sporaticly actives, flashing in its crater. Theirs enough room for a small vessel, do you pack a cargo ship of supplies or a fighter to prepare for what comes after the jump.
sick base
you should call the new mining ship "square pig".
- never mind -
I believe izzys script has a function where ships can be made to auto restock set items when reconnecting to a connection. Splitsie showed that in his assertive acquisitions series.
I POSTED THIS BEFORE HE FIGURED IT OUT IN THE VIDEO 😂🤷♂️
I vote the mini miner be named the mining slug.
After spending like two weeks binging the first part of No Suit Survival, I finally understand and share in the reverence for the Evermore.
I suppose it is the time to cannibalize the lost and create a underground hangar.
Launch the drones from under the base... from the bunker area. There's already a tunnel.
Finally!!! Yaaay
Make an underground bunker for your ships including the mauler.
So, normally I don't make suggestions, but I sincerely believe you might benefit from a grinder pit, there are now several destroyed ships scattered around, using a grinder pit would not only reduce any chance of lag by removing grids, it would benefit your supplies, potentially replacing or repairing damage done to your base and combat vessels.
... And this is why I have more decoys than guns..
I dub the the Rock-Block for the little miner^^
Can we see the ruins of the previous base with the spectator cam? Just too see what it looks like
It may be time for defense and decoy towers to spread out the fire from your base and give you more time to respond.
Underground bunker for the Mauler
i noticed something you dont use that i loved discovering. put a projector on each grid with that grids blueprint attached. this way any time a block gets destroyed it gets replaced with a hologram so you dont have to look for the block you need and do all the rotating.
you could say, that thing got mauled.....
I was watching the Reaver wail on the Mauler and was thinking to myself, "he might want to check up on that" Still in spite of the battering you took, you still successfully destroyed everything they threw at you, so I'd classify that as a victory although at great cost.
So, moving forward, I was wondering, can you use the AI script from Helgan for your drones to swarm enemies so they have less chance to focus on your main base or each drone?
It'd be awesome if you could send them in waves rather than individually, plus Europa has much less gravity, so pathfinding would be possibly less of an issue.
piston elevator ❤️
Great series! Enough that I’m trying it myself. One question though, I die in seconds outside, not even enough time to place and weld a block. Do I have a setting wrong?
It really looked like everything went well against that reaver, a runto the bunker an dthe base was able to finish off that big boy....but the mauler l, that was genuinely sad to see
just catching up.. beware the reavers the big ships will auto shoot but they will come raming ya as well.. and they got fixed rail guns lol
