Overhauling our Anchor Rode on a Nordhavn 56 Motorsailer: Ep. 26

  • We have been spending time at a marina in Ensenada mexico and doing a lot of maintenance on the Nordhavn 56 Motorsailer. We spend 2 months in the boat yard recently where we did some major maintenance on our running gear, as well as a few smaller projects and fresh antifouling paint. We will publish a long video showing all of our work in the yard soon.
This video will hopefully be the first of a series of very short videos where we document a single maintenance task. In this one, we show how we overhauled our all chain anchor rode. When we bought the boat, the chain was completely rusted because the anchor locker drain had been clogged so the anchor was sitting immersed in salt water for a long period of time. It was also 10 years old so the galvanizing probably wore off with use. Replacing the galvanized chain would have cost approximately $3500 USD, so we looked into a way to refurbish the existing chain. We found a galvanizing shop in San Diego that said hey could re-plate the chain for about $700 so we took this option.
After getting the chain back from the shop, we painted depth markers on the chain and re-installed it on the boat and we show that process as well.

I have some retired friends that live about 75% of their time at this marina, on a 65' sport fisher. They love it there.

I just did the exact same job but I only have 320’ of chain. You find out how sturdy those dock carts really are!

    Hi Dougal,
Funny, I’m getting ready to mark my chain also. I’m still at the shipyard getting the finishing touches put on my boat. It’s coming along nicely. Hope to be out on the water with you in the next 4-6 weeks. Hope all is well.

Ok been a subscriber since the LRC power Nordy...I think sailing is causing a bit of laziness... The old captain measures the depth with a ruler and then tapes off the ends before painting very detailed and accurate depth markers. Don't worry, it happens... Sailing changes people.....for the better. Great idea to re-galvanize definitely going to do that. My house uses anchor chain for downspouts. Works great and never clogs. Keep them coming.

Ha - I did measure to the center of the marks accurately - but masking the edges seemed a little extreme - especially given that the paint will be abraded by the wildcat on the windlass anyway.

@@CassidysSailingTrawler I didn't invent the rules. In the Nordhavn owners guide pg 728. "All regalvanizied anchor chain to be depth marker painted greater than 424 feet will be taped crisply with a sharp delination angle between 89-91 degrees.". I won't tell.lol.. Just had the Seattle Boat show. Was hoping to see a Nordy there... Nothing. Looking forward to the maintenance video.. you do great work...

That was a smart way to save lots of money to buy fuel with. 8-) It looks like it came back just like new chain. It should last a long while.

You need a self etching paint or primer first. Normal paint won't stick well to galvanized.

Did you use galvanized metal primer prior to your colorcoats? If not the color will not adhere long term. Excellent idea getting the chain re-galvanized, never knew that was a thing. I've sent a lot of chain to the scrap yard because of ignorance!

It was in the shop for about 2 weeks. It has to go into an acid bath twice to get all the rust off and they had to burn off the old paint markers but overall it looks really good. I think the thickness of the zinc is possibly thicker than what it is on new chain.

PIease excuse this comment if it is "teaching my grandmother to suck eggs" I hope you made fast the bitter end with a short length of small diam nylon rope which can be cut quickly in an emergency. Stops what happened earlier when all the chain ended up on the bottom, thankfully that time in shallow water!

Cleaning the anker locker was good but what about the rust marks on the epoxy. Is it not best to remove that too?

Thought about it but that locker is always pretty dirty and the rust stains won’t really hurt anything.

Can you make a video how much it cost to run your boat? The step propeller needs grease every 100h. I am curious. I love your boat!

Dam, know we need a chart to decipher colors for depth, same color with markers, ? a 1 foot long mark 50' a two foot mark 100' a two foot mark and 1' mark 150' ect...
Why is life so hard? lol

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler

There are all kinds of ways to mark the rode but our system is pretty simple:
      Yellow 25 feet
      Green 50 feet
      White 75 feet
      Black 100 feet
      Blue 200 feet
      Red 300 feet.
The incremental 25 foot sections after 100 feet repeat the same yellow, green, white marking but with the edges of the marks with the appropriate color, i.e 125 feet is yellow with black, 150 green with black, etc.

  • @donhappel9928
    @donhappel9928 4 роки тому

Ha - I hate doing that job. Seems yellow never gets good coverage on the chain for some reason.

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler

partially laziness but also because its a losing battle trying to keep that locker clean.
