Goodbye My life
I actually had to use one of these when a client DEMANDED we reused his notebook ram's
Ram has it's own information stored. If it weren't for that, for DDR you would have a system that won't boot because it doesn't know how to configure the memory. Aka, why windows picked up on "SODIMM". Believe it or not memory stores it's own memory to be configured as memory. ;)
He knows that he was surprised because their was no real way for the motherboard to read that information as RAM wasn't directly connected to the board
Travis Piper He said the adapter had no logic of its own. Not thr RAM stick.
He was wrong. He ignored the chip beside the virtual fuse and the importance of the jumper. The adapter has its own memory chip and the jumper determines whether it uses it or bypasses to read the one on the SODIMM.

you are correct that a person should just get what's made for their system if they already have or can get it, however, i do know many great purposes for these still. as a person who owns his own small warehouse of things and still does pc repair on the side, i get a massive amount of systems that come through here. a ton of ram from desktops can be reused and often is, where i'm often left with a ton of 1gb and 2gb sticks or whatever. but laptops, often times their ram gets reused far less because systems just get scrapped or ditched, or already come maxed with ram. so people like me have incredible amounts of laptop ram laying around, and still have many desktops come through here. this is a very cheap way to get use out of all of that ram. the cheapest of those adapters are around 3 bucks with free shipping and still work great. essentially is like 3 dollars per stick for those customers while i have the stock. i also am into a great deal of gaming and emulation and other misc and test a huge range of systems, which makes them useful from time to time there too. so yeah, they aren't really a consumer thing, but more of an enthusiast thing.
how would you say the compatibility is with regular ram sticks and also dual channel? hit and miss?
@@krystilla i'll answer the second question first because it's the good answer, heh. of all tests i have done over time, dual/single channel and all of it's necessities or quirks operate the same and identically as you would expect, nothing special or new there. the first question there though is where i've noticed a lot of varying things, and it can be very random. some sticks will work with others, but generally, i would say 80% of the time when trying to combine them with normal sticks in the same system, it will not boot. and of the few times it does, i would say 50% of those times become problematic or unstable. so just don't mix them, everything else is good or as expected/intended.
I'm hoping that the STD on the adapter stands for SODIMM To DIMM or something...
i hope so, but i’m not gonna risk it

Useful as well in small form factor where you also want high capacity memory. 32Gb non-ECC DIMMs aren’t readily available. 32GB SoDIMMs are a little easier to find though.
That's a great concept, but more research and test must be done for a finish product!
Then use a German product instead.
It is quite obvious to....some....that using one of the adapters in any of the RAM slots would make none of the RAM not work due to the increased trace length compared to regular DIMM cards. RAM are very high speed components and exact trace length to the DDR ICs is a must, that is why the trace have a lot of curves so that all the traces have exactly the same length. It might, or not, be possible than 5mm trace mismatch can make any RAM to not work.
That means than no amount of research can improve the product because one cannot cheat physics.
I read that as Finnish product as well.
ja wohl herr general
That’s a great try but it needs more research before it can be a finish sentence
I could use these to use in my test PC that never has the covers on it, testing memory in laptops can be a pain whereas using a desktop is easier.
"SODIMM to DIMMadome! Home of the DIMMsdale-" ok, I'll stop 🤣
I remember seeing some prebuilt 775 mobos that had sodimm slots.
There are Q87 Haswell motherboards with sodimm slots in the "thin m-ITX" form factor.
motorbiker46 It's also decently common in Mini ITX motherboards integrating a CPU that are commonly used for DIY "hack a computer in it" projects.
It's not uncommon to find fuel island motherboards that have both SODIMMs and DIMMs. A friend of mine works for FedEx and he save a few mobos from being scrapped.
had an old mini itx board on 1155 that took sodimms but was otherwise a normal desktop motherboard
It makes sense, still have some laptop ram, just recycle it in an old desktop.

Every time I watch his videos I feel like I'm in 1 of those "free games" apps and the ads pop up every 10 mins
There is a reason to use an adapter like this, I frequently change between different system e.g. Intel NUC, ATX Desktop, Laptop, and having a 16GBx2 SODIMM Kit with adapters means whenever I am changing system I do not need to purchase a new set of memory or owning 2 sets of memory, which is very convenient.
Hmm, or you could use it as a test to see if the ram stick is dead or not?? assuming the adaptor is relatively cheap
Actually, DDR4 SO-DIMMs are 260-pin while desktop DDR is 288-pin. While some DDR4 SO-DIMMs have ECC, I don't think I've seen any that are buffered or with parity, so that may be what's missing. (Or just some extra power traces or something.) Either way, I think that adapter is passive rather than active.

It's kind of strange how linus hasn't tried to make his own laptop. They've got those weird bizzaro laptop cpus China that fit into desktop sockets and these laptop ram adapters. All they'd really need is a chassis to fit it in, a low profile keyboard, and a mouse
sooooo do you have 4 of them to check if they can run in quad channel? SODIMM RAM is cheaper, it may be an alternative...
yeah why didn't he do that ..... smh.
With DDR4 prices, rn, I doubt if SODIMM is more expensive...
on amazon (in Italy), 8GB SODIMM can be found at 65 euros, the cheapest 8GB DDR4 DIMM I found is 73 euros... Not much cheaper, but count 8 of those, you save 64 euros. Anyway you have to add adapters so you can save somewhere below 50 euros. Stupid idea... Unless you have in plans to use this memory in a laptop in the future. Anyway I have 32GB (4x8) and I was thinking to give them to my brother and get myself 64, but prices now are scary! If your plan is to buy regular DIMM's in the future than that would be a bad idea to buy SODIMM's + the adapters because once you swap it out it's wasted money unless you have another use for them. However, if you ALREADY have a few SODIMM's and want to wait for the market to calm down then it makes pretty good sense for a new build.
