Have you tried making nut files out of feeler gauges? It works, and it's simple to do. I like the way people come up with ideas that keep luthiers and repairpeople from paying overprices for tools from "specialty tools" dealers. Some are necessary to have true, but a lot can be made in ones workshop like yours. Kudos.

did banging the file in the vise work pretty well to get it down to size? come out clean (more or less)? i was thinking of hacksawing or angle grinding, but i imagine the metal (on my cheapo files) is pretty solid. maybe sheer fracture is way to go...?
