Perfect , I really appreciate the detailed info and video, I followed it exactly and fixed my 17 year old sst16. It was the same little spring on my broken $5.98 at dealer. I sent him a small donation it was really worth it. THANKS Taryl .

Tarly I am from Griffith Indiana. So close to you. I have lived in Florida for 26 years and needed help for my John Deere and couldn’t believe I found you on UA-cam and you were so close to my home town, You are so informative and amazing at letting us non mechanics understand these things! You have serious talent!! Thank you so much Taryl!!!!! That crazy spin tractor is kinda cool too, even though it’s such a complicated system!!!😂

Great video and that was a good idea to drill that hole for accessing the bolt. You saved the customer a lot of labor charges by doing that! The dealer would have charged a fortune!

That's the fascination and frustration with working on small engine equipment: the unknown factors give you a learning curve. The thrill is in finding the solution to each challenge. Then comes the satisfaction, which can quickly bend the other way if the customer returns very irate. Such is the life of working with unknowns.

Well the Murray can't compete with the snapper comet but I guess they do take second place. First snapper I bought lasted 22 years!!! I got tired of working on the sears and john deer I had so I found a comet at a scrap yard and rebuilt it. That was 7 years ago :) Cranks on the first pull!!! Have you noticed that even though there are millions of comets out there, none of them show up at Taryl's shop!!!!

    Tayrl,John Deere made TWO OTHER versions of the SST's starting back in 2000-2003.They made a SST-15 with a 42"deck and the biggest one was a SST-18 with a 48"deck on it,I personally thought they were(and are)ugly as sin.GREAT VIDEO!!.KEEP EM'COMIN'!!.

Got to love John Deere, taryl. yeah, that steering is over designed and over complicated, way more than it needs to be. Like you say, it's not the space shuttle, it's a lawn mower. but, by them making that so complicated, it's more stuff to wear and break, so more money to jd for parts, and the complicated design will scare away diy'ers from fixing it themselves.

    • @mikesenginesandadventures

Them things were horrible to service. I hated it when one came across my bench. Foul a plug in the Vanguard v-twin, they stop steering completely. Awesome vacuum operated steering issue. The first SST units had that bear trap of a belt tensioner for the deck belt. Do it wrong there goes your fingers. POCS lol.

Hey Taryl I just had to work on one these sst16's last summer owner told me they took it to the john Deere dealer and they told the owner it needed a new transaxle they told dealer it worked one day and the next time they went to use it it would not move so they brought it to me to be cheaper to replace the dealer told them the drive would cost a thousand dollars I just couldn't believe it quit working sittin still like that come to find out I took the back end and jacked it up started it and only the left wheel turned took the right wheel off and what do you know the key was missing on the axle put a new key in put wheel bk on and what do u know it worked fine I called owner and ask if they had gives a flat tire before they tried to mow and of course they said yes I told them I just saved them over a thousand dollars they ask how I said who ever took the wheel off to fix the flat they lost the key way off the axle when they took the tire off , the owner said I took the wheel off so after I tuned it up and got it all done they gave me a 60 dollar tip for saving them so much money now I do all there work on all there equipment now , thanks for all ur tips they really come in handy ( JEFF FINNER ) FALLS CITY NEBRASKA.

It does not have the simpler pinion and rooster tail steering gear exposed on the bottom of the tractor like most of the other videos that have been published. I really like your honesty and method of showing how to do repair tasks that the homeowner can do. Thanks. Kevin Merkley

Cub Cadet i1046 has a screwy type of steering but it's some different, the usual problem with those is the steering mechanism has two kinds 1/3 moon shaped cogs and one of them breaks and then the mower is useless until it's fixed.

Any who, now to remove the deck and start investigating what this video taught me. She's a non keeper, and if springs and cleaning don't fix her, Motor onto another JD that is regular sane steering.
