Aside from being really funny and entertaining, I think you’re one of the best teachers on the internet. And I don’t even have one of these riding mowers.
The detail that goes into taryls videos is amazing i love the fact that he shows part numbers and a practical approach to mechanics in his videos he is so easy to watch and gives confidence to others way to go
Perfect , I really appreciate the detailed info and video, I followed it exactly and fixed my 17 year old sst16. It was the same little spring on my broken $5.98 at dealer. I sent him a small donation it was really worth it. THANKS Taryl .
Tarly I am from Griffith Indiana. So close to you. I have lived in Florida for 26 years and needed help for my John Deere and couldn’t believe I found you on UA-cam and you were so close to my home town, You are so informative and amazing at letting us non mechanics understand these things! You have serious talent!! Thank you so much Taryl!!!!! That crazy spin tractor is kinda cool too, even though it’s such a complicated system!!!😂
Best fix your lawnmower channel- I watch every week- funny, entertaining and educational. I don’t even own a lawnmower. ps I feel like I’m cheating on my husband, he has a repair channel too
Great video and that was a good idea to drill that hole for accessing the bolt. You saved the customer a lot of labor charges by doing that! The dealer would have charged a fortune!
That's the fascination and frustration with working on small engine equipment: the unknown factors give you a learning curve. The thrill is in finding the solution to each challenge. Then comes the satisfaction, which can quickly bend the other way if the customer returns very irate. Such is the life of working with unknowns.
Well the Murray can't compete with the snapper comet but I guess they do take second place. First snapper I bought lasted 22 years!!! I got tired of working on the sears and john deer I had so I found a comet at a scrap yard and rebuilt it. That was 7 years ago :) Cranks on the first pull!!! Have you noticed that even though there are millions of comets out there, none of them show up at Taryl's shop!!!!
Tayrl,John Deere made TWO OTHER versions of the SST's starting back in 2000-2003.They made a SST-15 with a 42"deck and the biggest one was a SST-18 with a 48"deck on it,I personally thought they were(and are)ugly as sin.GREAT VIDEO!!.KEEP EM'COMIN'!!.
I always enjoy your video's and have shared a lot of them..Am a back yard mechanic on little of everything myself..thanks for all the info on working on them and parts places!
Got to love John Deere, taryl. yeah, that steering is over designed and over complicated, way more than it needs to be. Like you say, it's not the space shuttle, it's a lawn mower. but, by them making that so complicated, it's more stuff to wear and break, so more money to jd for parts, and the complicated design will scare away diy'ers from fixing it themselves.
It's another Deere abortion you're gonna see tons of em getting dumped out in the driveways of America with a 4 Sale sign on em.. Runs but doesn't move..... I have some older mowers here from Craftsman to Troy Bilts just dropped a new motor in em they're good for another 30 years of mowing your yard..
Dude I love your videos, if I start feeling a little down or something I watch your videos they Left me out believe it or not it’s like watching a comedy show
Them things were horrible to service. I hated it when one came across my bench. Foul a plug in the Vanguard v-twin, they stop steering completely. Awesome vacuum operated steering issue. The first SST units had that bear trap of a belt tensioner for the deck belt. Do it wrong there goes your fingers. POCS lol.
Looks like a $330 in labor to replace a $4 spring. Maybe if you were not showing on camera you would not have to remove the entire top end, just pull the wheel and drill the hole. Nice Video.
doublewide6 Repairs LLC yea maybe, but whenever I'm working on something I don't understand I usually take alot of the covers off so I can see what's going on
Hey Taryl I just had to work on one these sst16's last summer owner told me they took it to the john Deere dealer and they told the owner it needed a new transaxle they told dealer it worked one day and the next time they went to use it it would not move so they brought it to me to be cheaper to replace the dealer told them the drive would cost a thousand dollars I just couldn't believe it quit working sittin still like that come to find out I took the back end and jacked it up started it and only the left wheel turned took the right wheel off and what do you know the key was missing on the axle put a new key in put wheel bk on and what do u know it worked fine I called owner and ask if they had gives a flat tire before they tried to mow and of course they said yes I told them I just saved them over a thousand dollars they ask how I said who ever took the wheel off to fix the flat they lost the key way off the axle when they took the tire off , the owner said I took the wheel off so after I tuned it up and got it all done they gave me a 60 dollar tip for saving them so much money now I do all there work on all there equipment now , thanks for all ur tips they really come in handy ( JEFF FINNER ) FALLS CITY NEBRASKA.
I’ve owned an SST-16 for 17 years without a problem. I regularly change the oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, gas filter and transmission filters. The John Deere SST Series won awards for its innovative technology.
I have a Cub Cadet 2186 Garden Tractor and the steering is slack. I can turn the steering wheel 30 degrees or so and nothing happens. Can yo udo a video on fixing this issue. It does not have the simpler pinion and rooster tail steering gear exposed on the bottom of the tractor like most of the other videos that have been published. I really like your honesty and method of showing how to do repair tasks that the homeowner can do. Thanks. Kevin Merkley
Wow, I've had a few problems on my 12.5/42 MTD after 25 years but most were things my sister and I could fix. This new thing is crazy, but it's a dream for the dealers.
I would assume that if the switch was bad, you would have the same steering issues. My SST18 has good springs but still has the same problem Taryl describes. I'll have to test the switches...
I own the SST 18 and it cost me 5500 in 2001. Nice mower on flat ground. Cuts better than typical zero turns, but is a little needy. Bought it because u could hold your beer with one hand and steer with the other
Cub Cadet i1046 has a screwy type of steering but it's some different, the usual problem with those is the steering mechanism has two kinds 1/3 moon shaped cogs and one of them breaks and then the mower is useless until it's fixed.
On my LX there's a quick pin at the trans and the pedals can stay attached to the fenders. You can reach over the right rear wheel and see it and pull it.
My SST only will cut if I go in circles. When the blade is engaged it will kill if I go straight but if the blade is not engaged it seems to work just fine
I have a sst18 and it just recently have trouble steering will only steer in high rev mode but still kinda hesitant. I found a small black hose looks like a vacuum hose that is dangling could that be the only problem it just needs to be reconnected?
Are the small white filters on the actuater air tubes hard to clean? You didn't really show how to take them off. You jjust said that they need to be cleaned.
I have one of these and removed the deck off to replace belt... Problem is, there are three pins which two short ones easy... It's the one long pin I can't figure out where the heck it goes... Help... (Love the way you folks do things.
Super Video Taryl,,,,Traded some upholstery work for one of the "POCS" mowers I should have took out my 9mm and put her out of misery , but after tuning up the motor, giving her another chance to piss me off. Any who, now to remove the deck and start investigating what this video taught me. She's a non keeper, and if springs and cleaning don't fix her, Motor onto another JD that is regular sane steering. Thx, Bear.
I have one of these poc! It has been ok for a few years, untill a couple of weeks ago, mine does not steer right or left? taken it apart already cleaned it up dont see any problems going on. seems like when running when pushing the pedels the aucuator does go all over left and right? thanks dan
Loved the video. If you ever have to work on a JD x300 series 4-wheel steering problem please make a video on it. My x324 steers well enough but it feels stiff compared to last year. I haven't delved into it yet but man I wish I could watch a video from you on it.
as usual taryl, you're right again,,,,,,,,,,,,,it's POCSteering...........who needs this overcomplicated garbage for a home lawn........my grass rats garage beer glass came the other day ,,,,,,,i love it............everything tastes better in it....
You sir have done a great job,i don't even have a riding mower and i watched the hole thing.Maybe i need to go to a LA meeting,,,{LAWNMOWERS ANONYMOUS}.
I bought one of these at a rummage sale for $100 runs perfectly. Then I sold my MTD for $200 good riddance. I thought The MTD was nice but this new one cut my cutting time in half.
These newer mowers are like the new cars. Pretty much no user friendly service. I have a Husqvarna rider with the plastic transmission and it’s only about two years old with 115 hours and it’s falling apart. And I have tryed to treat this mower like I would be using it in ten years 🤯.
Yeah, way to go engineers, quite an accomplishment, it takes a lot of time and talent to create such a thing. I'll keep my 30 year old Murray until it or me expire before I buy something like that John Deere....
Aside from being really funny and entertaining, I think you’re one of the best teachers on the internet. And I don’t even have one of these riding mowers.
The detail that goes into taryls videos is amazing i love the fact that he shows part numbers and a practical approach to mechanics in his videos he is so easy to watch and gives confidence to others way to go
It's a shame he's not in Podunk Oklahoma. I have a whole back yard full of victims ( I mean mowers)
Para que uuuu un q
You’re right. Is way harder than it has to be. Thanks for filming in a way that we can see. Good job.
Perfect , I really appreciate the detailed info and video, I followed it exactly and fixed my 17 year old sst16. It was the same little spring on my broken $5.98 at dealer. I sent him a small donation it was really worth it. THANKS Taryl .
They're trying their best to prevent us DIY-ing. Can't fool Taryl!! nicely figured, thanks for the useful info and the laptop -bouncing laughs.
The song at the beginning should be wayyyyyyyyyyy-up on the hits list.
Unsurpassed inspiration and vocals at its best.
Jerking his deck. Crank pics. Lol

quiltingtrucker ha! I knew you were watching another channel!!! You’ll be hearing from my lawyer, Ronnie Jorgenstien !!
Haha you guys are too much lol 😂😂
Great video and that was a good idea to drill that hole for accessing the bolt. You saved the customer a lot of labor charges by doing that! The dealer would have charged a fortune!
I just love the rock paper and sissers were Teryl looses and gets shocked with the taser,so funny, good job gang
What a hell of a job. Well Done Sir. With batteries costing more than a new drill and most times good for 1.5 holes, my drills are AC or Air.
That's the fascination and frustration with working on small engine equipment: the unknown factors give you a learning curve. The thrill is in finding the solution to each challenge. Then comes the satisfaction, which can quickly bend the other way if the customer returns very irate. Such is the life of working with unknowns.
And people wonder why I like my old Murrays, simple and runs forever
Na old sears suburbans will run and last for ever they new how to make mowers in the 60s and 70s
And that laides and germs is the differance between a parts changer and a mechanic!! well done taryl..
Richard Shirk didn't he change a part?
Great video. I love your common sense mechanics - attacking a problem.
You are one blessed mechanic, how you can go through all that and not swear, God bless you.
Thanks for the Dinner Taryl...!!!!!
Love your videos. Lots of knowledge and lot of efforts editing with sounds and what not. Thank you sir
The more complicated you make the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain!
I always enjoy your video's and have shared a lot of them..Am a back yard mechanic on little of everything myself..thanks for all the info on working on them and parts places!
Another great vid!!! Thanks Taryl and Jr!!!!
Got to love John Deere, taryl. yeah, that steering is over designed and over complicated, way more than it needs to be. dave1135 this one is not a lawnmower, it’s the space shuttle!

thanks for all the knowledge........weird steering mechanism but when it works right its awesome.
Dude I love your videos, if I start feeling a little down or something I watch your videos they Left me out believe it or not it’s like watching a comedy show

Another solid video. You da man! Your brain is my favorite library Taryl.
I love the skits and the lawn mower rebuilds!
The detectives in Poodump county are like detectives everywhere.
I’ve owned an SST-16 for 17 years without a problem. I regularly change the oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, gas filter and transmission filters. The John Deere SST Series won awards for its innovative technology.
Its amazing how no other company uses it. Because its designed to break and cost money
👍Ronnie is the best! Great tips w/ TARYL as always! All the characters are good, especially lil Johnny but IMO, Ronnie J. is the best 😂
Rock on guys✌️
OUTSTANDING !!!!! You are my hero
Taryl - Thank you for the detail video with all parts and tools to use to solve the steering issue. I was able to fix my JD Lawn mower.
awesome taryl!! SOME LITTLE PARTS cAN sometimes cause a major failure
Thank you Taryl. Excellent job with the green bugger. I have been enjoying your competent work. Your a little crazy but who the heck isn't. Be safe.
Shocking; the uncensored pictures of cranks.
Dunkman’s donuts ha ha ha ha! You guy are #1 in my book!!
Why in the hell would anyone want this type of steering ?
What a stupid design. That's the kind of crap aerospace engineers come up with.
John Deere fanboys because they think it's innovation, when in reality it's a aggravation.
Wow, I've had a few problems on my 12.5/42 MTD after 25 years but most were things my sister and I could fix. This new thing is crazy, but it's a dream for the dealers.
Taryl, love these skits man!!! Rockstars man!
A bit late now, but a 1/2" hole saw would have worked well. Great Detective work and fix.
Ronnie rocks!!!! Great work Lawn Mower Detectives. Never seen a mower like that. I have MTDs and a Toro ZT, like them both.
Thanks Taryl
I would assume that if the switch was bad, you would have the same steering issues. My SST18 has good springs but still has the same problem Taryl describes. I'll have to test the switches...
What a great video. I have the SST 18. It goes forward and backwards but won’t steer. Any suggestions, please.
Why in the hell would you want that steering on your LAWN MOWER? this ain’t NASCAR
Aint that the truth lol
Marty Martin maybe some people can't afford a 4,000 dollar zero turn! Money doesn't grow on trees! But that mower sure is nice!
small engine kid when this mower came out it was in the 4000$ price range
small engine kid - it’s too complicated for long term ownership. You can get a used Hustler FasTrac and mow laps around this John Deere for less money
I own the SST 18 and it cost me 5500 in 2001. Nice mower on flat ground. Cuts better than typical zero turns, but is a little needy. Bought it because u could hold your beer with one hand and steer with the other
Was that a sears custom grill in the back
Cub Cadet i1046 has a screwy type of steering but it's some different, the usual problem with those is the steering mechanism has two kinds 1/3 moon shaped cogs and one of them breaks and then the mower is useless until it's fixed.
Really !!!! I mean, how complicated can someone make steering for a lawn mower, what a pocs LOL , thanks Taryl !!
Great idea set the innocent people free after you get some donuts and coffee brilliant
Thanks for sharing your great knowledge
On my LX there's a quick pin at the trans and the pedals can stay attached to the fenders. You can reach over the right rear wheel and see it and pull it.
My SST only will cut if
I go in circles. When the blade is engaged it will kill if I go straight but if the blade is not engaged it seems to work just fine
Ronnie you PERV! Zap em.. Also, what deskjob engineer came up with this stuff?
All that for a stupid spring....don't forget to throw Ronnie over the fence...lol..
Thank you for a great video, how do you come up with such great idea's? Mr TD keep up the good work GOD BLESS.
Changing out that spring is a whole new lesson in swearing.
Nice fix Taryl. This is sort of a dumb design for a tractor, just buy a zero turn.
Love your channel always fun to watch.
I have one of these and removed the deck off to replace belt... Problem is, there are three pins which two short ones easy... It's the one long pin I can't figure out where the heck it goes... Help... (Love the way you folks do things.
8:51 that’s your dinner lmao
Super Video Taryl,,,,Traded some upholstery work for one of the "POCS" mowers I should have took out my 9mm and put her out of misery , but after tuning up the motor, giving her another chance to piss me off. Hey taryl like your videos
You The G.O.A.T!!!!!

Miserable repair. Now that you know how to do it, what would be your estimate of overall time needed to do this job?
In 2009 I got an SST16 with a bad hydro for free and parted it out. That design was very different from anything else I’ve worked on.
thanks guys for the vid ... do you have a vid on bushings for the wheels area on a snowblower .. †
Wow I would never buy one of these too complicated what's the advantage ?
only one that i see,,,,,,,,,,,,,,more money for john deere and dealerships that repair this crap
as usual taryl, you're right again,,,,,,,,,,,,,it's POCSteering...........who needs this overcomplicated garbage for a home lawn........my grass rats garage beer glass came the other day ,,,,,,,i love it............everything tastes better in it....
Awesome video taryl, but you got one he'll of a camera man.....good job..
You sir have done a great job,i don't even have a riding mower and i watched the hole thing.Maybe i need to go to a LA meeting,,,{LAWNMOWERS ANONYMOUS}.
Thanks, good teaching
Too notch how to video. I am a big fan of the Grass Rats.
Great job on the video
thanks for doing this video im sure i will have to fix one of these one day. good idea with drilling a hole
absolutely incredible. thank you.
Any one would have to be rich to own one of these. I will stick with my old MTD, thank you.
I bought one of these at a rummage sale for $100 runs perfectly. Then I sold my MTD for $200 good riddance. I thought The MTD was nice but this new one cut my cutting time in half.
Lawn mower detectives😅😂🤣.
I will never be buying one of those POCS John deer mower’s you can bet on that thanks again for your info
Good job Mr dactyl....
Fantastic. You are great
JD looks like a real life EZ Worx
Wow, interesting design
whats this guys shop name and location
Thank you!!!
Hello Taryl
These newer mowers are like the new cars. Pretty much no user friendly service. I have a Husqvarna rider with the plastic transmission and it’s only about two years old with 115 hours and it’s falling apart. And I have tryed to treat this mower like I would be using it in ten years 🤯.
I almost bought one of those steering wheel zero turns, glad I didn't.
Is it made by MTD?
Yeah, way to go engineers, quite an accomplishment, it takes a lot of time and talent to create such a thing. I'll keep my 30 year old Murray until it or me expire before I buy something like that John Deere....
Quite a fix
