Great job on repairing mowers. I like your videos. I have did mower repair about 40 years. You still can learn something, Even when you have did it for a long time. Jim
I had a kohler engine just like this one on a Generic JD that was 14 years old and never used an ounce of oil--finally sold it to a friend 2 years ago and he is still using the lawn tractor...
Really nice work! Cool to see the muffler mod. Taryl has as the skill and experience, nice grounding upgrade and electrical work, too. Pretty sure not every shop would make it look that nice. Thanks, Grass Rats!
Slick flange re-clocking on that exhaust! I've been wrenching, welding and machining since the late '70s but still pick up useful tips here because every type of mechanic work is different.
Just have to say you a great camera man ,and the sound effects really make you videos .Thanks Taryl you problem for got more than most people will every know
That was a excellent how to video. The camera man did great job getting everything you did under the deck. The wiring could be a stress breaker but you hooked it up like there was nothing to it. That’s because your Taryl Lawnmower Man.
I got my clutch off with an air hammer too. I didn't have a blunt-end bit; only the punch bit, so I used a small block of 2x4 between the air hammer bit and the lower pulley, and sprayed some penetrating fluid up in there. It came right off; but the drive pulley did not. So I tried different things to get the drive pulley off, but what ended up doing the trick was that I happened to have two small C-clamps. I used a narrow piece of flat iron laid against the end of the shaft, and the two C-clamps on opposite sides of and behind the pulley, each braced against the narrow piece of flat iron. By alternately tightening the C-clamps the pulley came off. Yay!
Really outstanding presentation! You and your camera man do a fantastic job of explaining and photographing the procedure and why it had to get done. Really great. Thank you.
Thanks Taryl. ..great video ... please keep filming the engine swaps " I love em.... I have a 6 year old an 7 year old boys " they love watching Taryl with me ...they keep begging me to take them to your shop ..they wanna see you in person .. We live in middle of ohio so it would be a little drive ..it's funny I turn Taryl on and they come running an jump on the couch. ..thanks guys
I would have liked to have seen you fix the pulley on the deck Taryl. Great video. I liked when you went to the blown engine to show us where the wires went.
Great information, great team, real fun to watch. Great camera work, editing and sound effects. I’m now confident to do a similar Intek for a bigger Intek in a Mountfield 40” but the new engine doesn’t match the previous wiring colours or connectors. No big deal after watching this video…There’s my dinner! Woooooo!

omg, it takes a master mechanic of legendary proportions to fix a Chonda. You are truly a GOD. Oh, and next time send Uncle Andy out there with a blow dryer. He should be able to clear the snow faster with that.
Get an old 5/8 socket to put on the bolt head as a guide for the punch in the air hammer and you won't have to worry bout it sliding off the head of the bolt
I was wondering about that...I'm trying to get the pto off my simplicity javelin with an intek (tossed a rod so it HAS to come off) ...sad part, while trying to hammer, slipped off the bolt and jabbed the bearing seal on the pto! Ughhhh...so, been researching how to fit that now too! Grrrr
Is there a really long throttle cable? When I swap zero turn engines one of the biggest problems is the throttle cable not being long enough when the new engine needs the cable to come from the other side.
Choke cable/ throttle cable, spelling is different,do the same thing otherwise. Might be some different diameters, but you can always drill out the hole if necessary.
Reminds me of the fairly new Gravely ZT that I had to put a new Krohler engine on. Customer changed the oil himself and forgot to make sure he got the old gasket off for the filter before he put the new one on. You can guess the rest. If the crank hadn’t come around and slammed what was left of the rod into the base of the cylinder on that side, I could have saved it. $1000 engine later and he was back in business, but it was an expensive lesson learned...... Funny thing, Scrub Cadet is MTD, Husqvarna is AYP! Ya got a half breed now!

Good Morning, Taryl, Jr., Slippers, et al!!!! Well, now you'll have a used motor?!?!? That ought to be a good video, as long as you get to keep it!!!! As the husband has "taught" me, he has conditioned me to remove the ground wire first. Otherwise you may tap the power cable to the battery terminal...like it did...and thankfully nothing happened! Now There's Yur Dinner!!! Good to see all!!!! Grass Rats.... Yow... Grass Rats... Yow... Back to the video!!!! -Darlene (& Scott)
t excellent vid........as usual and a great heads up on what to look for when swapping one brand to another...........you're good at what you do.............
Taryl, love your videos and love your work, the only thing I would've done differently on this repower is find another place to connect the battery ground, my opinion and I may be wrong is it should be to the engine block. If there wasn't so much paint under the engine I wouldn't mind. It's just my opinion, you're the one with all the videos and the money, what do I know. Lol, but I'm with you on not putting them on an engine mounting bolt
The diodes are used to hold the fuel solenoid open in the start position...if your starter ever engages right when you turn on your key,it's from a burned up diode backfeeding into the solenoid circuit, from the power circuit
I was always taught remove negative of battery first. If spanner touches engine or bodywork nothing happens, if you disconnect positive first and touch bodywork you discharge battery like your ark welding. It burns spanner’s blows holes in bodywork. I said this to a buddy a long time ago as he disconnected his battery, he said nah always done it this way and two seconds later bam, his gold ring touched the car bodywork and the ring was also touching the spanner which was on the positive post of the batter, he blew out part of the ring and it was glowing, he had to run into the house and pour cold water on the ring. Negative connection first disconnecting battery, negative connection last when connecting battery. This applies to electrical systems with negative earth. (The negative attaches to the bodywork). Some really really old systems may have positive earth (The positive connects to the bodywork). In this case the opposite applies.
Thanks Taryl. This was another great video and coupled with your skill and knowledge made the engine swap pretty straight forward. I would guess you knew before pulling the Club Cadet engine that the shaft dimension were the same as on the Briggs and Scrap Iron. Thanks again..
I did a swap from a 12 horsepower Briggs Murry, to a 25 horsepower Kohler, I was fortunate to obtain a complete mower the engine came from. That helped, still a few problems the Briggs had a 1 inch shaft the Kohler a 1 1/8 shaft after removing the the PTO, the drive pulley for the transmission was a little bigger than the Briggs, the big problem was I needed to use the lower pulley for the mower blades, the problem was the 1 inch versus the 1 1/8 trying to find a thick wall 1 1/8 inside diameter was impossible. I took an old PTO apart the lower part had a piece of tubing I need right size, and inside diameter. I had to have all 3 parts welded together. The drive pulley forbthe transmission (the top pulley) the spacer for the lower pulley ( the pulley drive for the mower blades) the starter was a little different as Taryl says only I was going opposite of Taryl. I also did away with the electric PTO to a manual blade engagement. The exhaust was easy, the pipes cleared everything, instead of using the original muffler with the Kohler, I just used 2 smaller mufflers with a true dual exhaust. It sounds a little louder than the one muffler. I like it though. Makes my 40 inch cut, more powerful, and easier to cut tall grass, or weeds. Just a few small problems but still an easy swap. I could have used the PTO, but I really wanted to do away with that and use the manual blade engagement.
I've got a Craftsman 26hp b&s intek I want to put on my Husqvarna zero turn to replace the blown up 24hp b&s intek. Can I swap the carbetrators because my zero turn has a separate choke? Idk if the hp makes a difference.
I mostly know some of what it doesn't take to maybe fix a lawnmower engine, but I consider myself something of an engineer of such! Like Taryl says "disconnect the battery first" had I knew that, I'd still have my fingers! Thank the good lord, I still got 9 of my old toes! Onetime.... I checked a Toro Recycler for spark by tying a fury little bunny to the cylinder head, fortunately it was a carburetor problem!

I have a wire problem because I swapped a Koehler with a Briggs and I don’t think it has an alternator and my old engine didn’t have a fuel shut off switch but it did have a wire that was not plugged and I believe it goes to the fuel switch.
