Check out our thoughts on Solo. Great work once again Captain! And I would just like to say that this movie was unexpectedly as good of all the bad rep it was getting, but really does suffer a lot by the inherent production problems that forced Disney to change it's tone and make a Star Wars movie by the end. ua-cam.com/video/5MyiGC30-RE/v-deo.html
The fan reaction to Solo is really freaking weird. I noticed that there seems to be a lot more division among the fans, but there's a lot less rage about Solo compared to Last Jedi. I think timing of the release, and the production gossip, changed everyone's expectations for this movie.
The political commentary was far less then the last Jedi. It's a fun space adventure. Sadly it's a shadow of it should've been due to the lost hype TLJ did. There's also the fact that Hans Solo is already dead in the current trilogy which takes away interest. "Why would I want to invest in a character who I know is already dead and who's arc is finished?" It's literally the same problem with Darth Maul being name dropped. His arc was already finished in Rebels.
Honestly, I think it's because most people actually expected this movie to be complete and utter garbage, and are pleasantly surprised it isn't shit. That said, the shadow that Last Jedi casts is quite long and for good reason. People keep talking about the fan boycott, but I think it's less of an organized effort to not see the movie and more that Last Jedi just kind of killed any interest for more Star Wars in a lot of mainstream movie going audiences than Disney or even fans realized. I mean, after you kill off Luke Skywalker in such a pathetic way, why even bother going back? He appears have been the main draw for a ton of people, hoping to see the glorious return of our favorite OT character. Instead we got a confusing plot with a sad old man on hiding on an island who has nothing to teach MaRey Stu, does almost nothing and then dies. Why should we care anymore?
its literal midnight when you upload at my time so basically, whenever I watch the intro, "Captain Midnight!" it gives me a sense of happiness and wonderful chills like when kids were listening to radio broadcasts back in the day waiting for the story of their hero to be narrated and i personally think its effing' awesome to experience something like it thanks to you! anyways, nice vid as always cap!
They had always wanted to go back to May because it was the traditional SW release window but theytook December for TFA because of Age of Ultron and made billions. So they stayed in December for RogueOne and TLJ but were preparing to go to May because everybody thought Avatar 2 would come out in December2018. When Avatar 2 was pushed back, Disney moved Episode 9 from May 2019 to December, but kept Soloin May 2018.
Dan Root They were, but Disney pushed it over to May when Mary Poppins was announced, and put that in December instead (they didn't want those two to compete with eachother. I have no idea how NO-ONE is mentioning this, it's pretty old news... and besides, Infinity War was pushed til late April because of Solo. What Disney didn't anticipate though (and understandably so), was that Deadpool 2 was then pushed by Fox from June 1 to inbetween Solo and Infinity War... So if that hadn't happened, Solo wouldn't of had much competition. So yeah, it's really quite unfortunate.... :-/
Gonna be honest here I don't care about release dates that much but what would have worked is them putting the film in December as there isn't that much big films out then and people wanna watch a movie for the Christmas spirit and winter is usually a great time for Star Wars fans as it usually makes a ton but may I mean June would have worked better because only AntMan was out then but instead they put it with avengers and Deadpool 2 and even mix with Jurassic world it's a bit random but the movie is good to me so I'll just watch it in December on Blu ray
I've thought about why Lucasfilm decided to release this movie in May instead of in December, and I think i figured out why. The first reason pertains to the Last Jedi reception. I think that the people at Lucasfilm knew it would be divisive, possibly alienating certain portions of the fanbase. So they were counting on Solo to be a safe crowdpleaser to win back people, and to do so as quickly as possible. After all Solo has a fairly straightforward plot, many nods to the OT and tons of fanservice. Right now they're many people who didn't like TLJ who liked Solo, which indicates to me that this strategy did work, though obviously not to the extent that they had hoped. The second is the wait for Episode 9. Being the final film of the main saga, Lucasfilm probably wants Episode 9 to be a big event. I think they're aware that the one-movie-a-year thing won't work because of that, as at that point Episode 9 will be just another December Star Wars movie. Making the public wait a year and a half for another Star Wars will definitely give the public the feel of a longer wait, even if it isn't technically any longer. The feeling of a longer wait will build more hype for Episode 9. Shame, if they had marketed the movie better instead of waiting until 3 months before the movie came out to release the first trailer, their plan might actually have worked.
Those are good points, but I still think they should've waited until December. The new era of Star Wars has built a momentum with Christmastime releases, and this movie needed the extra months in order to be ingratiated by the audience. This was always going to be a hard sell for the public.
I was also wondering if there is something very deliberate about the scheduling. The way I figure it: they knew Last Jedi would be massively divisive and controversial in advance, so they put a safe movie straight on its heels. Now with the safe movie doing worse than the controversial one, they've got reason to take more risk going forward. Maybe the stakeholders have been behind the push for playing it safe, while the main creative team would like to be less restrained. And maybe what we've witnessed here is a really clever strategy to get those stakeholders around to the filmmakers' more risky way of thinking. Also: Pretty sure they're testing the waters for a "multiple Star Wars films per year" approach, like with Marvel. Or maybe it isn't any of that at all and I'm reading far too much into it.
I think that's reading too much into the May date. Lucasfilm has wanted the May Memorial weekend back for years, and many of the past movies, as well as future ones like Episode IX, were scheduled for a May release before being pushed back to December. Solo was just the first one to hit the May target. Of course, testing the waters for multiple Star Wars movies a year is a possibility, though the fact remains that they seem committed to one movie a year. One of my own theories is that they are hearing that "Star Wars fatigue" is becoming real, so they're "overloading", so to speak, the fatigue by releasing two Star Wars movies within six months, then letting the fatigue disappear over a year and a half - fifty percent longer than the wait between other Disney Star Wars movies. When Christmas 2018 comes and goes with zero Star Wars advertising, it'll cause people to wonder where the consistent Star Wars holiday ad blitz is, and increase demand for Episode IX in December 2019.
I liked this movie a hell of a lot more than I was expecting. The scheduling decision was idiotic. That said, I would like future Star Wars movies stay in the past. Waaaaaay back in the past. Like Old Republic past.
I enjoyed Solo. And one of my favorite parts was the Maul reveal. The whole time Clarke's character saying she did some bad stuff I was expecting some stupid "I killed some people, I slept with some people, or I've done some other generic bad things." When Maul showed up I was like "Ooooh shit she has done some really bad shit."
I for myself loved Qi'ra and thought Emilia Clarke did a really good performance, the character was interesting and I really want to see into what it develops in the future.
hmmmmmm, I believe we already have 1 like that. I think it actually had sith in its title, 1 of the major parts of the film was a mentor telling a promising jedi the benefits of embracing the dark side and it ended with them in control of the galaxy, I also believe another word it had in its title was revenge.
I like your point about Dryden Voss being an interesting villain; it struck me solidly that he was willing to listen to his “employees,” work with them even as he reminded them of the bottom line. Very menacing all the while.
I agree that Disney should start making Star Wars stories separated from the original trilogy. That's why I think Knights of the Old Republic and Clone Wars are good imo, they're disconnected from the canon and they're not being chained down by continuity, so they're free to do more daring story lines.
The New Essential Chronology to Star Wars (2005) and _Jedi vs. Sith: The Essential Guide to the Force_ (2007) encapsulate the canon before it started to rupture. _CW_ (2008) was riddled with contradictions of all the previously laid Clone Wars-era material (specifically _Star Wars: Republic_ and the 2003 micro-series by Tartakovsky).
Rhett Gedies - That may be the case, but Disney had confirmed that to be canon. I'll admit, it's REALLY confusing with all of this change of Star Wars lore.
I don't acknowledge or validate the current state of Star Wars with Disney. I've left the fanbase. Heck, I didn't even acknowledge Lucas back when he said the EU wasn't canon (LucasArts officially put out the timeline. It was canon.). 2008-2012 had "murky" canon due to _The Clone Wars_ . 2012? Disney bought and scrapped everything. So that doesn't matter.
I was pretty unsure about the movie at first, but I was really surprised with the movie. The battle scene near the beginning was one of my favorite. Acting was pretty decent to be honest
+Eli N.S I see you commenting that everywhere, but it's just disingenuous to suggest that. The reason why the fans are "hating" on the new movies is because of how much they love Star Wars. I may not agree with a lot of what their rhetoric is, but you can't say they do that simply because they hate Star Wars. They critique the movies because they want them to be better. People did that with the prequels for years, and George Lucas at the time owned up to his failures. Eventually he got it right in Return of the Sith when compared to other two prequel movies. What really hurts is that their critiques are because they are racist, misogynistic, sexist, scared of powerful female leads in the eyes of the people behind Star Wars at Lucasfilm. They just add more fuel to the fire and gives people even more of a reason to hate the movies. Personally, I liked the Last Jedi, but it is definitely my least favorite Star Wars film.
I really like the point you made at the end there. It’s why I was turned off by the idea of this movie happening. I knew they were going to put Han on some epic adventure, and to me that takes away from how cool he was in the original trilogy
Exactly! The great thing about the original trilogy is that you get to see Han evolve and show off the legend that he is. This movie feels too much like “Han is badass and here’s why”. Show don’t tell guys. Show don’t tell.
How come NOBODY is talking about the influence of social media/UA-cam influencers? I had such disregard for TLJ that when I listened to Ethan Van Sciver, Geeks & Gamers, Jessi Milestone etc I was like THEY GET IT. I also decided on my own that what Ruin Johnson and Cray Cray KK did to Luke Skywalker I wasn't gonna give them any more money. The boycott was real.
DreamLegendary the boycott was probably a vocal minority. Because the difference between boycotters and other movie-goers is the label only. The numbers are low because there was apparently a general disinterest from casual movie-goers. Peple wouldn't go with or without preachers like those youtubers.
DreamLegendary I hate passionate Star Wars fans since the prequels. No thanks. So hateful and obnoxious group of fans and I used to be part of the Gundam fandom.
So many people are unhappy with the direction Star Wars is going since the Last Jedi and the disrespectful way lucasfilm employees act. That’s the main reason why the movie failed. So many people no longer care about Star Wars even in a casual way.
Solo does something better than every other Star Wars movie. It shows why the empire must be destroyed, mainly by focusing on the lives of people not fighting the empire but just trying to live in it. It's a crime choaked hell scape where the army spends more time trying to subjugate people who want nothing to do with it while proving powerless to stop the criminals who are constantly on the lookout for other criminals. I'd want to destroy the whole thing too. Then Darth Maul shows up and ruins the mood. Well, this movie didn't have to be about Han Solo. The Kessel run was already explained in the books, and this movie's hodgepodge scifi cliche version did not improve it. The important stuff, the utter disfunction and failure of the empire as a state, could have been done without Han Solo.
Im sorry but to every person who skipped Solo because they let someone else’s information sway their decision before giving it a chance: How does it feel to be a member of a herd of sheep?
I've wanted a Han Solo centric film for 20 years now. I was just hoping for a "Han and Chewie" smuggling adventure as opossed to a kind of origin story. Other than that detail, I loved it
Weird that it made the least amount of money, but I think it's the best star wars movie that disney made, aside from Rogue One. They didn't completely derail stuff like the sequel trilogy did.
I saw this movie yesterday and thought it was...alright. But I really didn’t like how they handled some iconic parts of Han and Chewie’s detail. Chewie literally found his ammo belt on the ground, and Han’s iconic gun was just made out of some random rifle that Becket didn’t even care about. Han Solo in this movie is very different than Han in the OT. The Darth Maul cameo is annoying because it doesn’t set up anything because we know he dies in Rebels. Finally, the twist were the marauders become the good guys completely ruins some of the earlier scenes in the movie where they basically ruined everything and caused the death of two people in Becket’s crew. But it’s not all bad. Donald Glover is awesome in this movie as Lando, even if he kind of leaves by the climax. Becket’s character is very interesting, as you never really know what’s he’s going to do. In one of the movie’s earliest scenes, he betrays the Empire by leaving to go steal from them, betrays Han by giving him up to the Empire, and then betrays the Empire again by rescuing Chewbacca and Han. And Vision is a very great villain, who feels like he’s having a lot of fun in his role. I guess he was bitter after dying in Infinity War, so he came back as the bad guy and got some new tattoos. So overall, I’d give it like a 6 or 7 out of 10. I really wished that the original directors stayed on the project, but hey. We can’t get everything, can we?
Well they're building up the mythos of the Falcon as some big thing when it doesn't have to be and you're complaining that they undersold something as rudimentary as a belt and pistol?
I really liked both Solo and Rogue One! They honestly feel like truly new stories. I realize now that I probably didn't even see Han Solo in the Solo movie as the same Han Solo from the original trilogy, which is probably a bad thing since that's what they were going for but I actually kinda prefer it that way. Solo was great and I will definitely watch it again in the future.
I was vocal about not having interest in seeing Solo because I felt that it just didn't need to exist, but with that said, I thought it was really good after I ended up watching it! I really really enjoyed it and felt it captured the essence of that particular era of the Star Wars saga.
SPOILER....SPOILER....SPOILER....SPOILER....SPOILER....SPOILER....SPOILER.... 7:57 that subtle "you're full of crap" look Obi-wan gives Han was in response to his "less than 12 parsecs" boast, which was intended in the original film to show how Obi-wan knew Han was trying pull the wool over the eyes of two people he considered rubes. Unfortunately, it was so subtle that most people missed it, and they've been complaining about it ever since. Still, I'm not wildly pleased that Solo retcons the boast into something factual. The boast was so very Han-like in his original conception. To me it's a small example of how Disney has been a less than careful (to put it mildly) caretaker of a major part of cinema history and culture.
They also heard that the Millennium's escape pods had been launched in ANH, so thought that they need to add an escape pod on the front, despite the escape pods being in the back. You even see this in TLJ, when Rey is dropped off outside The Supremacy.
The Last Jedi backlash is the primary reason why it did so poorly. Anyone who pretends it is not to do with that clearly doesn't read the UA-cam comments on most Star Wars related channels.
The failure began with casting. That guy is not Han Solo. Also the movie is the most predictable movie I've remember watching and cramming it with like 10 references to other SW movies per second didn't help
They underestimated the fans ability to actually boycott the movie. They pulled no punches in the last few years, and as any abusive relationship, something had to give. Consumers know that the proper way to hurt a brand is not purchase it. Solo failed not because it was Solo, it failed the moment it was announced. You add that two very divisive Star Wars movies, the fans knew that this movie wasnt something they would "miss out". They knew what Solo would be about. It wouldnt be about Star Wars. It would be a very blunt political message, some virtue signaling, and have all the people in charge of the movie making their very best on continue to ostracize the fan base that kept this franchise alive for 30 years. Yeh, that screams "great marketing", right there. Regardless, that formula does not sell (go figure). People go to movies to escape reality for a few hours. That's why they pay premium to go. Not to be berated, and having an agenda shoved down your throat. Unfortunately, that's the SW plot now, and you cant blame millions of people not wanting to be a part of that. Personally, I think if Disney was more hands on with this franchise, it wouldnt devolve into this. I'm fine with having a franchise I like pumping out movies every year. If they're good. If they arent trying to indoctrinate me onto their social politics. If they dont insult the fan base in order to cater to another demographic that might or might not give a fuck about that particular franchise to start with. If they fail in that simple reasoning... why should I spend my money to continue supporting them? Why should you?
External things aside, the movie was great, nothing in the movie isnt Star Wars, its Han's backstory, brings in Darth Maul as well. Its better than the "sequels"
I've been a SW fan since 1995 when my parents bought me the original trilogy on VHS. I gotta say, Solo was superb. Not as great as it could have been, but the characters were relatable, and it was respectful to the universe. It was poorly timedccx and marketed, especially considering it was released near the awful The Last Jedi. Solo and Calrissian play off each other so well. They have genuine chemistry.
One thing I don't get at all about the criticism of Han is that he doesn't resemble the older Han in the way he is. No wonder I'd say people change, the older He is more cynical and you become that after having lived a little, had friends who turn their backs on you, realized that love is more complicated than the teenage dreams you had, so I think it would rather be unrealistic if a younger Han would be the same as he is when he is older.
Solo's failure came from The Last Jedi. The Last Jedi sucked all the excitement and anticipation for any further/future films. Six months after the release and the wound is still fresh. That being said; I would really much like to see Solo A Star Wars Story. From what I hear it's not that bad, but I just can't do it. I won't give Disney / Lucas the pleasure of thinking that they're going in the right direction with the Star Wars franchise. Episode 9 needs to deliver. There are so many unanswered questions that episode 7 & 8 left that need answering in Episode 9, that I just don't see how J.J can answer them and still make a coherent, fun, and exciting film. How long is Episode 9 going to be... 6hrs?? Rian had 2 1/2 hours and gave us nothing, but a lazy script that left more questions, and some lazy answers! That guy really fucked it up! Kathleen Kennedy is not a Star Wars fan and nor is Rian Johnson. Two cons who interviewed for the job and unfortunately for us fans got them!
A Harry Potter prequel that people weren't that into? Fantastic Beasts has slipped terribly but people were sure more interested in them than with Solo. Also, Solo's $103 million domestic take was seen negatively because the Star Wars franchise relies more on domestic.
That is interesting. The domestic gross for Star Wars often comes close to half of the total, whereas for say Marvel, Harry Potter, or Fast and Furious it’s only around a fifth to a quarter.
As a stand alone movie, SOLO was "okay". But let's face it, Harrison Ford is SOLO, and vice versa. So for anyone else to play the role, is just not going to have the same appeal. There was no problem with scheduling or marketing, the real issue was having a different guy filling in for Harrison Ford. Its true, this movie should never have been made as it did not add anything to the ongoing saga of STAR WARS.
EverythingDisney yes, marvel had no issue with its movies on a May- June release schedule for a decade. And they consistently succeeded with that hectic schedule. You. Are. Wrong. Now, get off the internet and re- think your life choices. And stop bothering people with your antagonistic whimsy.
Solo was really underrated. There are a lot of cool side characters from Star Wars that I wish we could see more of. When they talk about the death Aura Singh the hairs on the back of my head went up.
The problem was the color pallet and the lighting. All the movie feels bland and repetitive. Visually, nothing stands out. The good looks of the protagonists get losts in those sepia thones and opaque lighting.
Seriously dude, no mention of the boycott?! Solo did NOT bomb because of scheduling. OT Star Wars fans like me see Star Wars movies several times no matter when its released! This is because of how the Last Jedi broke the fandom, period. All the other reasons are excuses.
PlanetMusk Vlog While the fandom kept solo from really succeeding, I think like me many are just tired of Star Wars. Sure we still love the original trilogy and always will, but seeing Star Wars in the media and hearing about how bad rogue one or Last Jedi is all the time gets old fast. Like how people complain about Superhero fatigue, (which I don’t believe is going to happen anytime soon) I believe people have a bit of a fatigue of Star Wars or are starting to.
Even how divisive Last Jedi was we really have to ask the question how many people actually boycotted. You may have which is fine, but that is one example. Honestly even as someone who liked Last Jedi I personally was far more interested in Infinity War and Deadpool 2. When it comes to typical movie trends being after two popular movies usually causes a film with less interest to do worse than it would have. Unless there is evidence that the boycott had actual influence this seems like a more logical reason for the film underperforming.
Well...its impossible to get exact number of who boycotted actively...and who said "meh... I will watch it on video/ maybe not", but it comes from the same place just with a little less concern/ emotion. Star Wars is not being handled well, nor written well enough to compel all audiences to go to the movies based solely upon a logo. That "get-out-of-jail-free card" was cashed in with The Last Jedi.
I love the fact that it's a good movie by itself. If I knew very little about Star Wars, I could sit down and enjoy this movie. Then, I might even be compelled to watch the other movies because this is such a great stand alone film.
It's not star wars fatigue thats what the shills say.. but marvel is doing fine with their movies.. solo failed for several reason 1. Backlash from the last jedi 2. Lucasfilms insulting the fans over criticism 3. By making and shouting lando is pansexual not many families want bring their children to see that 4. All these sjw feminist propaganda. 5. Lucasfilms not listening to the fans and going out of their way to ignore what they want to see. 6. Fans still pissed over ruining luke han and Mary poppins leia so alot boycotted the movie.. of course lucasfilms and the shills will ignore all this and pretend it's something else & solo sucked
I wanted to love Solo. Instead I hated it. Alot, this is not even a good impression of Han Solo. It is almost a completely different character. And Lando, he is weird. They should have just made an entirely new character, because this just sucks.
THANK YOU! At least someone is talking about scheduling in a video about Solo. Everyone seems to forget how hectic the summer movie season is this year.
suemorphplus2009 But it would have been easier for Disney to raise excitement if this wasnt coming off the heels of the biggest movie of the year. If Solo was released in December, with its first trailer in front of Infinity War, more people might have been excited to see it, rather than sitting the film out
dude it’s not the scheduling its because KK doesn’t care about SW or it’s fans and treats them with gross hostility. TLJ was awful and their response that “It’s only a bunch of nerds that are upset“ is what has killed the very passionate fan base. That combined with the shitty political messages shoehorned in make the franchise feel kind of tired and worn.
Ok I’m a huge Star Wars fan I love all the movies I don’t even mind the prequels because I accept that Star Wars isn’t a flawless or amazing series it truly has one great film empire a new hope is corny and in reality not a good movie and the prequels are a more scaled up version because it was all Lucas while return of the Jedi was a safe bet just like TFA was it repeated a new hope on certain points because it didn’t want to risk it while TLJ took an unexpected unsafe try at a corny and just entertaining film series just like the now great but once “horrible” empire you’re the problem man you are the person who can’t realize Star Wars never made great films they mad a great film with a few ok ones that happened in the same universe and sure the political messages aren’t needed but the idea of all empires being evil in the OT is a political statement it may be a less controversial and present one but it still is one and in George Lucas’ words the prequels and in turn the OT now faces it the rise of the emperor is like the rise of the “bush administration” which I’d say is a pretty bold political statement on the prequels and likely relates back to views on Nixon post watergate that were popular when he wrote the OT
What Disney needs to do, if they want to start making serious dough from their huge investment in Star Wars, is respect the damn lore established by its creator George Lucas + CHANGE up the damn show runners that ruined Star Wars as fans have come to know it. Get rid of the fking political, talentless idiots in charge of Star Wars first. Then higher some true creative and talented novelist level writers who know how to write a damn good story.
Finally someone else who actually liked it! I was starting to feel alone out here. Yeah, it had its problems but overall Solo was a pretty fun ride. I thought Qi'ra's arc was very interesting, there was always this sense of her actually not being good, and in the end when she does turn evil, it was amazing. I like how different this one felt from the other SW films. I hope they keep doing that and experimenting more but, you know, moving forward and not backwards in time.
I think what hurt movies like Solo and Green Lantern, Ghostbusters 2016 etc is the internet. When reviewers call a movie "Bad" the public lets the review sway there opinions and spending habits. A lot of people say "Who needs a movie about a minor character telling us a story we already know and didn't ask for" but then they want to see a Gambit movie that tells a story we already know and didn't ask for, it just confuses me. and the comment is an insult to books like "Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina" People want to see stories based on minor characters telling stories we already know. They just followed internet reviews and agreed with them with out forming there own opinion. Also a lot of people don't watch TV and a story like this could have been an episode of Star Wars Rebels. Or they could have brought Rebels characters to this or Rouge One. Maybe this would be better if Disney had created a live action Anthology TV series. Or better yet, don't destroy the book canon and then try to rebuild a new EU.
The problem with Solo is it keeps going back and rehashing the same characters from the OT and not showing anything new about them. At this point the only thing we know about Han "Solo" is that he always wore the same clothes. Same thing with Lando. And all of this points out the main problem with LucasFilm and the GFFA. They don't have an actual cannon or lore to begin with. They should already have had the core back story about Han Solo fleshed out long before this movie was made as "cannon". And this is the difference between what George Lucas did in the OT and what is happening now. He had a story in his head long before he committed anything to film. Whereas now, there is no real effort being put into defining the "lore" and 'story' behind the GFFA, especially in the OT era. A lot of ths is just being made up as they go, which is why it is beginning to show lack of returns. At least Marvel has years of actual stories to draw on for their films. And if the story group exists they should be defining the core cannon about the GFFA and what the overall story is within it at different times and the back story behind the major characters we see..... And by doing away with the old EU material they now have to make up the whole story of what happens after EP 9 again from scratch and leaving it to each director to make it up as they go makes no sense. This is what makes a star wars nerd, the ability to imagine so many places and scenarios within the GFFA without resorting to reusing the same locations, settings and characters over and over again. But seems like LucasFilm are not star wars nerds. If you asked them how many ships the Empire had 5 years before A New Hope starts, they probably have no clue. Not to mention how many storm troopers, what the rank structure was, how many grand Moffs and so forth...... And the GFFA is not earth. SJW isn't a thing there. And what kind of sense does it make for a walking toaster to complain about toaster rights? A toaster is a manufactured produced designed to do a particular task. It is not a truly sentient evolved organic life form. I mean you got wookie slaves and all kinds of oppression among different species around the galaxy and all kinds of sex trafficking and the only thing LucasFilm could come up with is a droid as the face of "social justice" in a GFFA? Seriously?
How is it unfair. Voting with my wallet is the only language a corporation understands. I vote that the current lucasfilm leadership should be send to alderaan. Until that happens and they stop ruinining ma star wars, they will not get money. Simple.
Avalanche 616 Well its gonna be a JJ again. Mystery box, attempt at nostalgia etc. Essentially it will be well executed but deliver no substance. TFA was all set up, rickon johnson just ruined the setup by doingbhis bullshit movie. We will prolly be back to square one.
@ayamutakino I don't know what point you're trying to make. I'm comparing Star Wars to Star Wars. You want me to compare Star Wars to what? Indie films?
Otso Tuurna same studio, same executives, same universe, same characters. To support solo would have been too tell Lucasfilm that they were right about the last jedi. I'm not part of the boycott, but to say that the boycott was without merit would have been wrong.
I liked and enjoyed Solo: A Star Wars Story. And I recommend everyone to either go see it, or buy the DVD. I will never listen to a main stream critic again. Because of them I miss out on seeing a great and entertaining Star Wars movie. They talked so negative about the movie that I believed that the movie was not a good movie. After seeing it on Netflix, I greatly enjoyed the movie and I would have enjoyed it more on the big screen. I see that I can not trust film critic anymore, because I see that they are either more political, or they did not get enough money to speak good about this film. They need to learn to not to destroy things, and people careers, because they just don't remember to how to have fun and tell the truth about a movie that has real entertainment value for everyone and their fans. To make a long story short, They love telling a lie for money, than they do enjoy telling the truth.
Also dont forget that Solo opened on Memorial Day weekend, and its total is reflective of a FOUR day weekend, which was strategically done to help his numbers. The failure is absolutely a response from the fans to Kathleen Kennedy.
Box office deficit and poorly scheduled premiere date aside, I loved Solo. Being bridled to the Star Wars brand is what truly hurt this movie. This is because the writers have to remain loyal to timelines, continuity, and obsessed fans. It could have been a stand alone film, by keeping the plot, actors, and just changing the character names. I don’t care that there were production issues, (because I was completely unaware anyway) the result produced one my favorite combinations: comedy, action, and just enough drama. I don’t mind that there were certain characters which were underdeveloped, because those themes could have been explored in a sequel. This movie flew under the radar for sure, but I am not ashamed to say it is in my top three of the franchise. I grew up in the seventies and eighties. Ron Howard captured the tone and energy for me that was reminiscent of that period. It could become a cult classic (you heard it here first).
mike stoklasa; so does being a true fan mean you like everything served up without question, is there no point when you could see yourself disliking something because you are a true fan?
Victor Luna I won't argue that the Lucasfilm execs are free of guilt in this issue, but you guys have a serious tendency to blow things out of proportion, and you definitely share some of the blame. That being said, that wasn't my point. I'm saying that claiming you and people like you are the reason Solo failed is nothing more than hubris, and a failure to understand how movies work. Sure, your dumb boycott had an impact, but Solo was poorly placed, poorly advertised, and poorly named. It had a ton of things against it, so its flop is definitely not uniquely because of butthurt fans.
Super Star Destroyer when did I say I boycotted solo and when did I say it had a major impact you made a lot of assumptions about me because you want to tell a hardcore Star Wars fanboy off because like you said they have no idea how movies work, but I’m not your guy.
I honestly don't understand how people don't like the Solo. Especially if you are a fan of the original series. The Disney Remakes of the last couple of years have done so many things wrong. We all know it. I was skeptical for Solo, from bad marketing like so many others, but at the end of the day, I think it came the closest to the classic style and feel of Star Wars. The humor and the narrative came much closer than Rouge and Last Jedi.

A lot of people are more into the Force and Lightsaber stuff, not this other side of Bounty Hunters and etc. I personally love it. But the ending to the movie is shit
I was alive in a time where people would camp out on the street corner for three days to see the new STAR WARS movie. I refuse to believe the latest excuse about what month it is or what movies came out weeks earlier. STAR WARS suffered because it was too close to Deadpool 2 or Avengers...? How far can a franchise sink before that becomes your story for failure? Is Episode IX going to flop because it came out a week after the latest animated fish movie?
They should have casted Anthony Ingruber. He is, in fact, the most faithful representation of a younger Harrison Ford, to the point he is basically a clone.
Disney did not want to compete with themselves with Frozen 2 in December. They still should have placed Solo in October or November. That would have made a huge difference. More time in the oven is always great. Soso Star Wars movies must stop.
The movie was so good and it took us through the series of events that made him the character we love. But releasing when it did and the marketing was awful planning. The trailers don't do the actual movie Justice and make you expect something completely different.
I think no matter what Disney or Lucas films does, your gonna find some part of the Star Wars fan base that will be left unhappy or unpleased. If they do something new and different( which I want them to do because that’s one of the reasons why I liked TLJ and I want new stories) your gonna have a side of the fan base who will complain that it’s too different from what they are use to and want to stick to what they want and feel comfortable with. Like the older characters and stories. But if they do that, where they stick to the old stuff and not do anything new and not be different, then you’ll find a potion of the fan base who will say that the franchise is just treading old waters and not doing anything different with the franchise. And feel like it’s just capitalizing of an older franchise without doing new stories or characters. Main in point? Star Wars fans will never be happy or content on both sides.
most ppl loved the old star wars and most wouldnt complain that why tfa got a ton less complains then tlj plus the last jedi change too much and it ruined the plot
Well my girlfriend hated the originals and almost couldn't stop laughing through all of RotJ. Can never say most with something as old as OT because it falls into "legend" if you will. People will like it no matter what because it came first sort of thing.
Maybe it’s because Solo: A Star Wars Story has SJW/Feminist messages in the film? I mean, making Lando a pansexual? Completely ignoring the fact that Lando was a cool ladies man. Also, a woman was demanding that “droids deserve rights.” I mean really? REALLY?! Cmon. Can’t believe there’s people out there that defend this trash.
Admiral Mikaela Pathetic. Lando is not pansexual. The only reason people thought that is because one of the writers said maybe and as per usual everyone lost their minds. The robot was just joking with the idea. Lando only really cared for her as an ally. The robot also got blown to pieces after rioting. You literally get to watch her die miserably. Why are you angry?
Am I the only one who doesn't care about the movies itself and am just more off put by their reactions? I didn't watch the TLJ and Solo because of the way they responded. Insulting fans, calling them insecure babies who can't take the idea of a 'strong' woman and basically loads of other insults just because we didn't agree with their views? They insulting people and blaming it on people who critique their ideas and shows? And even go so far to as to mock people with sarcastic insults online. At this point in time, I don't think I'll return for any more SW movies even if they did try to make an effort to fix it. Not until they actually apologize to the fandom for insulting them.
Its not just bad press, its bad dialouge, pointless plot lines and characters and too much emphasis on politicising (droidlivematter). The reason for Solo being a flop isnt just due to the movie itself. Lets not forget the last 3 Disney SW movies, especially TLJ that increased the downward spiral into mediocrity and pandering.
The timing of release was horrible... especially since they had previously advertised it for a late November release, then dropped it six months early with barely any fanfare. Someone WANTED it to fail (*cough*Kennedy*cough*). Honestly, when they announced that they had fired the original directors, I was SO relieved. I have hated almost every other movie they have written and directed together. And yeah, I just really don't understand how they got that movie in the first place... You are going to go from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and 21 Jump Street and tell me you know how to do a good Han Solo film? I just never believed that, and while I didn't think Ron Howard was the right fit, either, at least he has made more than one movie I can stand to watch for more than ten minutes.
Honestly the SJW droid killed this movie for me. We didn't need this, nobody wanted this, not to mention the creepy implied sexual relationship with Lando and being shoe horned into the original trilogy
I think that the reason Solo did not do so well money wise is because of fan backlash, it’s because some fans feel alienated. I also agree with you about the release date of the movie.
@Louise Sea no, I saw the one that's available. The sequels were so disappointing it was depressing. Solo however I place with Rogue One and the Mandolorian, authentic Star Wars spirit.
@@davidcabreonmunoz6258 I'm so sorry that I had a different opinion than you and it gave you the need to call me a bot. I'll put in the effort to have my opinions match up with yours in the future.
It took a big hit from word of mouth. It really wasn't the story we wanted to see. We had already seen Han as a scoundrel, alot of people wanted to see more of an arc in his character. Alot of fans head cannon had Han much like Luke, wanting to fly for the imperial navy. He would have seen the empire for what it was, rescued Chewie from slavery and gone pirate. Han in the film doesn't really have an arc. He just gets a ship and a buddy but is pretty much the same.
No mention of the boycott. No mention about the millions of videos and posts showing that a big part of the fan base is pissed off. More burying the head in the sand...
*Frankly, I just found Solo to be really really Boring. I couldn't get through must of the parts without falling asleep. The Han actor was okay but he was definitely wasn't right for the role. I couldn't see him as the Han Solo that Ford played. I loved Glover's performance of Lando, but due to the controversy surrounding the character I can't even enjoy that anymore.*
Sarincrow The reason these characters are exploding in Star Wars is because Star Wars itself is exploding. Most SW content doesn't even have LGBT characters- hell, the Sequel Trilogy doesn't- but we get such a volume of such content that it seems like more than it is. Trust me, I work at an amusement park, and the number of gay people I encounter is huge. But compared to the total number of people I see, it's actually quite small. Kind of like Star Wars haters.
You guys are making sound like they were forcing us to look at a pansexual Lando The whole time. If they made Lando kiss L337 there would be a problem but they literally mention that he likes the robot and that’s it. You guys are fucking making it worse then it is
Ron Howard killed solo.not Disney.i like the idea of a badass space outlaw.but he killed it,woody Haroldson is a shitty actor and he had to many of his other movie reference, its star wars, keep it star wars

Hi! 👋🏻
It was garbage
The movie was ok at best not worth watching on a big screen.
Its not bad. But its not good either. Just bleh.
I personally really liked Solo: a Star Wars story, but the release and marketing was really bad
Xcaliber The Wise agreed
Geek forlife I agree with you agreeing
Xcaliber The Wise I agree as well.
Agreed to your prior agreement of agreeing
I liked it ALOT better then the last three
Alden did perfect... he was Han without being Harrison... perfect
If you see the deepfake version, you can see he perfectly mimics Harrison’s micro expressions, it’s honestly incredible
I agree. The story just felt like a mess.
@@jdbb3gotskills How so?
@@jdbb3gotskills who are you agreeing with?
Totally
The fan reaction to Solo is really freaking weird. I noticed that there seems to be a lot more division among the fans, but there's a lot less rage about Solo compared to Last Jedi. I think timing of the release, and the production gossip, changed everyone's expectations for this movie.
Its the difference between high expectations being disappointed and low expectations being pleasantly surprised.
The political commentary was far less then the last Jedi. It's a fun space adventure. Sadly it's a shadow of it should've been due to the lost hype TLJ did. There's also the fact that Hans Solo is already dead in the current trilogy which takes away interest.
"Why would I want to invest in a character who I know is already dead and who's arc is finished?"
It's literally the same problem with Darth Maul being name dropped.
I loved solo honestly, it’s just so fun.
@@mystirboy thinking the "sequels" are canon is why people hate the movie? Huh, people should just ignore the "sequels" then
its literal midnight when you upload at my time so basically, whenever I watch the intro, "Captain Midnight!" it gives me a sense of happiness and wonderful chills like when kids were listening to radio broadcasts back in the day waiting for the story of their hero to be narrated and i personally think its effing' awesome to experience something like it thanks to you!
anyways, nice vid as always cap!
No idea why they haven't stuck to the December showings like they have done since Force Awakens. That worked well.
Still a fair few around Christmas...
EscapeVelocity Yep, that also sounds plausible to me!
I liked this movie a hell of a lot more than I was expecting. The scheduling decision was idiotic.
That said, I would like future Star Wars movies stay in the past. Waaaaaay back in the past. Like Old Republic past.
It wasn’t amazing, but it certainly wasn’t garbage like I was expecting
good
Ya i agree. Wasnt the best movie but it wasnt so bad. I enjoyed it
Forrest Gump it was competent, specially for a movie this troubled in production.
@@th3ninj4k54 yeah for what was going against it the movie itself wasn’t bad but it wasn’t my favorite either.
Ok guys, controversial opinion here... Solo is, without a doubt, a Star Wars film.
This take is TOO hot to handle! :)

I honestly can't recognize Emilia Clarke without blonde hair.
LOL
the big problem with this movie that it came out when people were still just recovering from the horrible the last jedi
Congrats you went from a small channel to 100k subs and verified my dude!
I for myself loved Qi'ra and thought Emilia Clarke did a really good performance, the character was interesting and I really want to see into what it develops in the future.
Qi'ra is a really good character.
Donald Glover's Lando is *PERFECT*. He channeled BIlly Dee Williams so amazingly, while still owning it on his own.
Why can't we get a movie, which is centered on the Sith ?
That'd be so cool.
That's not a story Walt Disney would tell you.
FahimTheStrategist Its why you're left to the video games
hmmmmmm, I believe we already have 1 like that. I think it actually had sith in its title, 1 of the major parts of the film was a mentor telling a promising jedi the benefits of embracing the dark side and it ended with them in control of the galaxy, I also believe another word it had in its title was revenge.
Not to mention that the heroes lose big time!
I like your point about Dryden Voss being an interesting villain; it struck me solidly that he was willing to listen to his “employees,” work with them even as he reminded them of the bottom line. Very menacing all the while.
I rate this movie, it's the best out of all the modern Star Wars films. I wish they'd push on and make a sequel.
I agree that Disney should start making Star Wars stories separated from the original trilogy. That's why I think Knights of the Old Republic and Clone Wars are good imo, they're disconnected from the canon and they're not being chained down by continuity, so they're free to do more daring story lines.
_The Clone Wars_ (2008) was the beginning of the end for Star Wars.
Kai the Guy - Clone Wars 2008 was canon.
No one hates Star Wars like Star Wars fans.
No one loves and wants the best for Star Wars going-forward as die-hard Star Wars fans.
You can't eat a rotten potato and say you love it. Same with Star Wars and everything else.
KnotsOfWonders *Po-TAH-to ☝️
😂 thank you so much
I really like the point you made at the end there.
M. Lewis
it was not even an epic adventure. its a hesit movie, and a poormone too.
This movie didn’t really put him in a “huge adventure” it was just a heist
Xcaliber The Wise ... heists are cool. Actually I honestly just wanted Ocean's 11 but Star Wars for the movie. But... eh, what do you know...
Cameron Godsey Solo showed and didn’t tell.
Dude you sound just like tobey maguire
No
I gotta agree with you a bit
Can't unhear it now haha
Peple wouldn't go with or without preachers like those youtubers.
do oyu have any evidence that they are a vocal minority the review on rotten tomatoes shwo the tlj was hate by the majority
Never heard of them. I follow Emergency Awesome and Black Nerd.
trisha Hernz check them out.. Very intelligent and highly passionate Star Wars fans. I follow the two you follow as well, you'll enjoy the content
Well they're building up the mythos of the Falcon as some big thing when it doesn't have to be and you're complaining that they undersold something as rudimentary as a belt and pistol?
nd4spd What? You think that the Falcon isn’t already some big thing? It’s the most iconic spaceship in the history of Star Wars.
It didn't start that way.
Watch it a second time, it helped me so much!
Tommy Ruggeri well, the maraduers did not know they are the good guys at the start of the movie.
Congrats on 100k Subs
I'm tuning in every Thursday
Two cons who interviewed for the job and unfortunately for us fans got them!
garcianelson123 TLJ is basicaly dragon ball evolution of star wars
We do not talk about DB Evolution....ever!
garcianelson123 exactly, now imaige if the studi want make a evolution spin off and sequel , these are solo and ep 9
Eduardo Souza it will NOT speak of DBE!
Nelson, The Last Jedi es muy buena, ers un fanboy de mierda, guevón.
I'm still hoping for that Ewan McGregor Obi-Wan film though.
Obi wan tv show with Ewan and hayden coming this december!!😁
Still waiting hope it's still gets finished
Honestly not excited at all
It’s real!
A Star Wars movie should pull massive box office no matter when its released.
This video really sums Solo Movie and Disney relying on the past perfectly! Keep it up Captain Midnight!
PlanetMusk Vlog no one hates Star Wars likeStar Wars fans
Eli N.S No, we hate the Lucasfilm leadership. Solo is collateral damage
Sorry man...scheduling is giving Disney too much credit. Just three words: The Last Jedi. No more needs to be said.
This is for sure one of my favorite youtube channels
I wanted to love Solo. Instead I hated it. Alot, this is not even a good impression of Han Solo. It is almost a completely different character. And Lando, he is weird. They should have just made an entirely new character, because this just sucks.
The Last Jedi = LucasFilm boycott. It is this simple.
EverythingDisney we had to see the dumpster fire first in order to make the intelligent decision to avoid further hazards.
THANK YOU! At least someone is talking about scheduling in a video about Solo. Everyone seems to forget how hectic the summer movie season is this year.
Robin0928 It's not a question of scheduling so much as the enthusiasm was simply much higher for Deadpool 2 and Infinity War.
suemorphplus2009 But it would have been easier for Disney to raise excitement if this wasnt coming off the heels of the biggest movie of the year.
SxC97 lmfao by the sounds of it she's right
no one hates star wars like star wars fans.
SxC97 TLJ is easily one of the best Star Wars films though
Ryan C ??????
If only everyone liked Solo then we wouldn't have weird CGI actors populating the Star Wars sets.
This was a good Star Wars movie
I had a GREAT time at SOLO. Best SW film Ive seen in over 20 years.
Simple.
Melvin Gehteuchdochnixan simple and effective.
Let's see what happens with episode 9.
Avalanche 616
Well its gonna be a JJ again. Mystery box, attempt at nostalgia etc.
Essentially it will be well executed but deliver no substance.
TFA was all set up, rickon johnson just ruined the setup by doingbhis bullshit movie.
We will prolly be back to square one.
Solo and Rogue One are better than anything in the sequel trilogy.
@ayamutakino I don't know what point you're trying to make. I'm comparing Star Wars to Star Wars. You want me to compare Star Wars to what? Indie films?
@ayamutakino Ok... You're acting like I insulted their work. It feels like you're having an imaginary argument.
Last Jedi ruined it. I didn’t go see it only because of the last Jedi and how kathleen Kennedy hates the fans
Last Jedi killed my interest in seeing solo.
Those two movies have nothing incommon
Disney didn't kill Solo, the fans did. It's the sad truth.
To be fair, I really wouldn't mind if Rebels wasn't canon anymore if it mean more Maul in the movies.
Ultra Nerd same
Darth Maul was one of the worst characters in Star Wars until Legends and Clone Wars saved him.
This is before Obi-Wan kills Maul in Rebels
It doesn't really clash, Maul's death is 8 years after solo
Rebels SUCKS!! HAH! BURN IT NOW
Would you care to come onto our show and talk about this?
WorldClassBullshitters but hes a real fan he doesnt deserve to be on a fake fan show
mike stoklasa huehue. truth
The amount of autism that’d come out of that...
mike stoklasa; so does being a true fan mean you like everything served up without question, is there no point when you could see yourself disliking something because you are a true fan?
It's alright to not like a movie and still be a true fan, however if he makes hate videos about Star Wars every day, he is clearly not a fan
People didn't go see it because Disney and Lucas Film crapped on the fans
BattaSSL not everything is about you.
Super Star Destroyer
Yeah I know that I can't leave a second comment is a there a limit or something?
Super Star Destroyer he’s not wrong though Disney blames the fans for the errors of the last Jedi
This movie had all the elements, but the problem of 100% of this movies have a huge problem: a rushed bad script
They should have casted Anthony Ingruber. He is, in fact, the most faithful representation of a younger Harrison Ford, to the point he is basically a clone.
That seamless transition to a sponsor was pretty skillful
Disney did not want to compete with themselves with Frozen 2 in December. They still should have placed Solo in October or November. That would have made a huge difference. More time in the oven is always great. Soso Star Wars movies must stop.
Frozen 2 comes out in 2019. The Disney movie coming out this December is Mary Poppins.
The movie was so good and it took us through the series of events that made him the character we love. But releasing when it did and the marketing was awful planning. The trailers don't do the actual movie Justice and make you expect something completely different.
Jar Jar: A Star Wars Story
Alex Mercer ST right there with you dude. Can't make everyone happy
I'm absolutely thrilled that people like you aren't interested in Star Wars anymore.
Im so with you about Dryden and Beckett. I had the same feelings about Qira as well. This movie is awesome.
This movie had real potential for a great trilogy, I actually watch this and rogue one repeatedly, blame TLJ for the failure!
Honestly the SJW droid killed this movie for me. We didn't need this, nobody wanted this, not to mention the creepy implied sexual relationship with Lando and being shoe horned into the original trilogy
It bombed because of Kennedy and Johnson's disdain for Star Wars and its fans.
I think Maul’s appearance was in reference to his crime boss days after Savage rediscovers him. Like, the whole Black Sun mess he got involved in.
I think that the reason Solo did not do so well money wise is because of fan backlash, it’s because some fans feel alienated. I also agree with you about the release date of the movie.
I loved it. Hated TFA and TLJ.....but Solo was satisfying, fresh, creative.
@Louise Sea no, I saw the one that's available. The sequels were so disappointing it was depressing. Solo however I place with Rogue One and the Mandolorian, authentic Star Wars spirit.
The fan reaction is despicable. The movie was great. One of my favorites, and it was so sad that they cut the sequels.
Fail, disney bot.
Change my mind: Solo was a better movie than all three sequels combined
Easy enough. The Sequels count as negative
Jay Infinite what, the whole pansexual thing? Lando being pan makes absolute sense. I don't see why people are making such a big deal.
Super Star Destroyer That's exactly why. Everyone is talking about that and not the performance itself.
