Frankly, I have always admired Mama Cass for having the guts to get up on stage in front of sometimes huge audiences as big as she was, not letting her size or appearance get in her way to success. Keep in mind that in the 60s and early 70s people were a lot thinner, and she would have been considered morbidly obese. If she was alive today she would just look like the vast majority of women waddling around walmart.

Singing acapella (Heartaches etc., ) I love the oldies... Perfect pitch IS very rare. I have "relative" pitch...but Mama Cass just " floated her voice through both the alto and the soprano so strongly" as if singing was absolutely effortless! What a great lady! You can hear her taking her "controlled" breaths between phrases...called " evenly executed breathing" I think, not sure. And the LA DE DA parts, Do viewers get the "feeling" that those were the "notes" she wanted a guitarist to play FOR her somehow ? When others sing her song, they always leave that part out; I think it's her special "composing on the spot?" What a great lady and singer !

But, I feel like her voice didn't stay as consistent later in her career. Karen, however sounded amazing even during the last years of her illness. How she did it I'll never know...a true legend. @@lilyhoss6000 Please don't think I'm trying to start a heated debate about this but Cass died in the early '70s. Even Karen died prematurely and fairly early on in her career. In other words, we never got hear them at later stages the way Joni has recorded. I have a feeling they would have maintained that rich sound because Joni smokes and her voice has become more gravelly. I was going to include Judy Collins. I had the honor to see her over 10 years ago. I think at that point she was pushing 70 and her instrument was impeccable. She maintained that range. I assume she is very disciplined with vocal exercises as well as having a lifestyle that supports preserving her voice.

This song means so much to me. Especially that line: "'Cause it hangs them up to see someone like you." I'm sure Mama Cass, like myself, felt the pain that comes with being a larger woman. Back then, it must have been even lonelier, because there weren't nearly as many women her size back then, especially on the popular music scene. But she went and made her own kind of music, just like in the song. I love her.

    Nobody can tell ya;
There's only one song worth singin',
They may try and sell ya,
'Cause it hangs them up to see someone like you.
But you've gotta make your own music
    Sing your own special song,
Make your own kind of music even if nobody else sings along.
    You're gonna be knowing
    The loneliest kind of lonely,
    It may be rough goin',
Just to do your thing's the hardest thing to do.
But you've gotta make your own music
    Sing your own special song,
Make your own kind of music even if nobody else sings along.
So if you cannot take my hand,
And if you must be goin',
    I will understand.
But you've gotta make your own music
    Sing your own special song,
Make your own kind of music even if nobody else sings along

Oh, I think everyone she worked with "knew" that..she's an ICON .Singing acapella (Heartaches etc., ) I love the oldies...

Really? You are either joking or you are hard of hearing. Cass had a very powerful voice but it has an abrasive edge to it. It is not a smooth voice. Listen to a voice like Alicia Keys and then the abrasiveness of Cass's voice will stun you. Although I acknowledge that Cass had good pipes and musical talent, I actually can't stand to listen to loud, caberet, Broadway show, belt-it-out voices like Cass, Bet Midler, Ethel Mermon. It is a a bombastic style and not smooth and velvety and pleasant. My opinion.
