    This suite has been one of my favourite pieces for years but hearing it live at the Royal Albert Hall was something else. The main theme of course is wonderful, but it is the love theme that really transcends the realms of film music. Those soaring strings and everything else just conjure images of Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland in their prime. Korngold was a genius; Wilson and his orchestra performed his work majestically. Absolutely stunning. I will remember this performance always.

    This marvelous score is one of the big reasons the 1938 movie it was composed for NEVER GETS OLD. I didn't see that movie until 1967-68--I forget which year, but I've never forgotten how it entranced me from beginning to end because it moved with this score! Now, I know Korngold composed the score after the movie was filmed, but he made the movie sound as though it was filmed in time to the score. And of course, no one involved with the making of that movie was going to mess with this score, so there it is in all its glory when you see the movie!

    • @williamsnyder5616

      Almost all of the time in Hollywood, the composer doesn't start to write the score until after the film is finished. There are occasions where the composer will do research ahead of writing the score. Two times I can think of involve Alfred Newman and Miklos Rozsa. Newman was writing the score for "The Diary of Anne Frank," so in advance, he flew to Amsterdam before filming ever started on the Fox lot to interview Otto Frank about Anne. He wanted to get to "know" Anne. Otto told Newman of Anne's love of Hollywood. So, the next time you watch the film, look for the scene when Anne gets her diary and pictures of her film stars. Newman's music willhave a slight hint of "Someday My Prince Will Come," from "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." In the case of Rozsa, he was hired to write the score fro "Ben-Hur." So, he tried to get himself in the mood by sitting in the Roman Colleseum. He sat there humming imagenary Roman marches and keeping time with his pencil on a notepad. He said kids lin the arena saw him and thought he was nuts!

      @@williamsnyder5616 Thanks for the back story, but with the exception of the cinematography and Shelley Winters' performance, I found everything about Anne Frank, which I saw a few weeks ago for the first time, disappointing. "The story is king," but its script was fatally weak, and the Super Chief (George Stevens) should have cut it by an hour. Al Newman's score was also limited.
      I see Stevens' taking on of this project as a sign of his artistic decline. He had been on a masterpiece run (A Place in the Sun, 1951; Shane, in 1953; and Giant, in 1956), but then went for message movies, which are virtually impossible to make masterpieces of, no matter how much talent one has in one's cast and crew.

    • @reidmason2551
      @reidmason2551 Рік тому +1

      @@nstix2009xitsn George Stevens and Alfred Newman worked together again on *The Greatest Story Ever Told,* and while it's a good movie overall, the score I think was weak. *King of Kings* had just come out a few years earlier with a powerful Miklos Rosza soundtrack, and Newman's music for *Greatest Story* was too somber and sedate by comparison. Stevens was already giving the movie a moody, ethereal tone in the writing and acting, so the music didn't need to be tamped down. One could argue that *King of Kings* was a much more energetic and lively film (and there would be some truth to that), but I don't think *Greatest Story* should have had a soundtrack so...for lack of a better word, bland.

      I wonder if anyone composed a film score to cover the movie as early as Max Steiner did for KING KONG (1933). Early sound movies didn't have much in the way of film scores--music with the opening credits and the end credits, but not much else! But Max Steiner was an energetic composer, and I can just imagine him rubbing his hands in glee at the prospect of scoring KING KONG! Now, Erich Wolfgang Korngold brought his own music genius to the movies, but after Max Steiner showed composers how to do it! And I'm so glad the early movies had such composers brightening the movies!

    My three favorite scores of all time: 1. "The Adventures of Robin Hood" (Korngold, 1938); 2. "Star Wars" (Williams, 1977); 3. The Captain From Castille" (Newman, 1947).

    Korngold is one of the greats which include Dimitri Tiomkin and the late Jerry Goldsmith (1929-2004). Jerry Goldsmith's son also had perfect pitch and was a great composer for tv and motion pictures. Goldsmith's son sadly passed away just after doing the music for "Stargate SG1" (TV) and "Stargate Atlantis". John Williams (composer of "Starwars" theme et al) said Korngold had been his inspiration. Korngold's first composition at age 11 ,"Der Schneemann" (the snowman) was the talk of Vienna. It is true that only a last minute plea from director Max Reinhardt saved Korngold from the Nazi's take over of Austria. Korngold went on to score 16 films and won numerous awards. He sadly died at age 60 in 1957 just after his Symphony in F# major was completed. He truly was "Das Lichte Wunderkind" (The last prodigy).

    I always thought that Korngold was able to capture the soaring sound of violins better than Herrmann, the quickness of frantic riding better than Newman and the sound of the epic nearly as well as Rosza. What a genius.

    What most people don't know is that the major themes of Korngold's ROBIN score are reworkings of an opera score he composed in the late 1920s.

    • @CaminoAir
      @CaminoAir 9 років тому +3

      Michael Royer Yes, time pressure forced Korngold to re-use that as the main theme. It's amazing then that (with only 3 weeks) he was able to compose 100 minutes of 'The Sea Hawk' to the standard that he did. I didn't mind the fact that Robin's theme wasn't original, because it seemed to suit him and the film very well.

    Ranked in the company of the five or so greatest film scores ever composed. I don't care for the breaks, however. There should be a way to link the sections and turn it from a suite into one symphonic tone poem. Then we'd have something that just might rival Strauss' "Don Juan".

    John has been ‘given’ to us so this music will never die. Ok, the orchestra has much to with it, but can you imagine how much THESE scores will be worth- ESPECIALLY since many of the Hollywood originals have since been LOST?!!

  • @williamsnyder5616

    The story behind Korngold's score is interesting...and tragic. He had written three great scores for Warner Bros. ("A Midsummer's Nights Dream," "Captain Blood" and "Anthony Adverse") and then had returned to his native Austria. Jack Warner called him long distance and begged Korngold to do the "Robin Hood" score, but Korngold nixed the idea. He had returned to Vienna to writre symphonic music. However, once it appeared that the Anchluss was happening, Korngold left Austria for Hollywood where he reconsidered Warner's pleas.

    Rudolph G Kopp was a contemporary and fellow countryman [both were born in the Hungarian-Austrian Empire] of Erich Wolfgang Korngold. Both worked in Hollywood at roughly the same time. Kopp was composing the music for Cecil B DeMille's "Cleopatra" at Paramount Pictures in 1934 when Korngold arrived in Hollywood to begin his long association with Warner Bros Pictures.
