- A taste of Hollywood in the Berlin Philharmonie! John Wilson brings his orchestra to Berlin for the first time to celebrate the music of classic MGM musicals as part of the Musikfest.
Sarah Willis is a British-American French horn player. In 2001, she joined the Berlin Philharmonic, becoming the first female member of its brass section.
She was born in Maryland, USA and grew up in Tokyo, Boston, Moscow and London. At age 14 she started playing French horn and then attended the Royal College of Music Junior Department in London, UK. She studied full-time at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, UK.
In 1991, she moved to Berlin, where she became Second Horn in the Berlin State Opera under Daniel Barenboim.

The world would be a far better place if we had many more people like John Wilson in it. Tonight I discovered him and his Orchestra completely by accident, looking for BBC Proms concerts. His dedication to the music is infectious. I hope he has a long, productive and happy life.
John Wilson is a gift beyond value, this is an astonishingly gifted group of musicians.Probably the best since the days of MGM.
I am full of admiration for John Wilson and his orchestra they put so much work and enthusiasm into their concerts.Thank you Roly🇬🇧
Simply superbe!!!!
Go back and listen to the movie soundtracks of The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, and West Side Story and you will hear a very pronounced trumpet vibrato. I think this also could be heard in Fiddler on the Roof. I’m impressed the trumpet player for John Wilson is adding that vibrato as well. They really are going for authenticity and have studied things well.
The first music was a little bit of “Silk Stockings.” Thank you Mr Wilson for remembering the gifts of musicals from yesteryear. Such extraordinary music and lyrics. This is a special gift
8:18 John's face.
I love John Wilson.
I loved this. I am a huge fan of John Wilson.
And of Sarah.
All the musicians are accomplished soloist in there their own right.
He's also trying to achieve a sound like the Great Hollywood Studio Orchestra's, they are still revered today. I always listen to the original recordings.
LIKE HE SAID THE MGM STUDIO ORCHESTRA
i GUESS JOHN'S OWN ORCHESTRA WAS SADLY, DISMANTLED., AS THEY HAVEN'T TOURED IN BRITAIN FOR A LONG TIME. OR APPEARD ON TV. ALTHOUGH JOHN GUEST CONDUCTS A LOT.
I MET ''MIKE'' THEIR LEAD TRUMPETER , IN THE THEATRE BAR, DURING THE INTERVAL, AND WE EXCHANGED A FEW WORDS. A VERY NICE AND CORDIAL CHAP.
Great
Excellent! Next time, would you do a focus on Ruth Rogers?
Brilliant !
Great Oc
Does anybody know the piece they play at 0:54?
As far as I know, at that time it was an instrumental part from the song "Stereophonic Sound" from the musical "Silk Stockings" by Cole Porter.
Fun video. But my gosh, wrong vocalist for the trolley song. But then nobody can do Judy Garland. But this lady's timbre is all wrong for this song.
Karen A th..ohhhh so true...no there arent anymore Garlands...but there ARE better singers...she is all wrong.vocally..lacklustre....therecare a couple of their stable that arent fabulous....not as good as the orchestra
It's okay but nothing that special.
What ?
You aren't serious surely!
Yes, it seems incredible how people vary so much with regard to their taste in music. For me, I love it. I was lucky enough to go the the Royal Albert Hall the other day to see them. An ambition I've had for years. It was wonderful.
Yes, what a coincidence!
