True enough, but in this instance the "Hollywood sound" is also because Wilson & his excellent orchestra are playing the actual overture from the 1956 Hollywood film version of the King and I (with Yul Brynner & Deborah Kerr) as orchestrated by Robert Russell Bennett & Co.! A beautiful performance of a beautiful score!

I still believe that there’s something that John Wilson does with stings that no other conductor does. It feels like air when the string section plays, like eating sweet drugs that make u float with ecstasy. I think that’s down to him, not only down to the exceptional playing

@@olliemartinelli4034 There’s a video somewhere on YT where JW explains how he gets the glamorous, lushly shimmering sound of the strings. They do play their instruments differently. It’s a technique used in the MGM orchestra in the 1950s, not used in classical orchestras.

I was a little boy when my mother, who was a single mom, took me to see the Ki g & I at the movie.theater. Even at that early age of 7, I fell in love with the music. Watching this wonderful orchestra and its Maestro conductor brings back that magical time with my mom, who is gone now. She so loved Rodgers & Hamerstein's musicals, and because of her, I do as well. I am 63 now with twin boys and I have passed on to them what Mama gave me.

It doesn't make sense to compare Classical music and Musicals. Each one has its own flavor and deserve the same interest and quality of performance. You don't compare Caviar and Foie gras! Both are at the top. Wilson is a great director and his orchestra probably the best today as this kind of music is concerned and that's all there is to say. You may have exactly the same thrill at a performance of a Beethoven or Mahler symphony if the orchestra and its conductor are the level of such tremendous scores which are hugely difficult to play. The rest is a question of personal tastes and both are to be respected.

It is fantastic to hear the overture in up-to-date sound, both here and on the corresponding R&H / Wilson CD. The overture is not in the film I assume because it features I Have Dreamed, which sadly is not in the film, though fortunately it was recorded as it is on the original LP. It is of course an absolutely glorious melody. And performed with such heart by Wilson and his orchestra. It is truly something wonderful.

@@pnocellaYou are incorrect. “I Have Dreamed” was one of the three songs cut from the Broadway cast album when the film was made. “My Lord and Master” and “Shall I Tell You What I Think Of You” and the Overture were not included. Music for “Western People Funny” was used as underscoring. The soundtrack was sequenced in the same order as the Broadway cast album even though the songs are in different order in the film. When the stereo version of the soundtrack was released, “Getting to Know You” was shortened and the two love duets combined.

On pourra toujours attendre, les français ne sont pas mélomanes et quand ils s'intéressent à la comédie musicale c'est soit pour les massacrer en en donnant des versions traduites en français soit en montant des navets du livret jusqu'à la partition orchestrale!

I feel sorry for people who are not moved by this amazing music too! I played the violin and viola for 10 years. I was good but not good enough to have a career in music. Besides, i had other things in mind. One piece we played in jr. High was music from the king and i. I still remember how thrilled i was to play this stunning music. Music like this will never die and can move people forever!

NOW---thats more like it John. NOBODY, wrote show music like Roger's and Hammerstein. When they died, so did musical theatre--with a few exceptions.

I agree. I think it's wonderful that Sondheim was a protege of Oscar's. He talks about him so warmly as a father figure.

While I strongly disagree that musical theatre died with Rodgers and Hammerstein, I think it goes without saying that they were unique talents and that they popularized "Broadway" beyond the confines of New York City.
