In the states we have a lot of shelters/ programs, but they’re often under funded and they do not target the main issues relating to homelessness (drugs, metal illness). Definitely a system that I want to see reformed in the future.

Ofc something humane (think Norwegian prisons lol) I always think of like a program where it’s tailored towards the individual and people go through steps to gain levels of independence. Unfortunately, I think that would take a lot of reallocating of funds that idk everyone would be on board with.

For example, my cousin was only okay with unemployment after he had an unfortunate layoff and needed it, and also realized the rules regarding it. It takes personal experience to change people’s mind on this matter, and most people only see them on the streets, instead of them being family members

RE: the homeless issue and other hot topics in America, from public healthcare to ranked voting implementation to electric cars, people get a blinkered attitude that keeps them from even considering that other countries might have found solutions worth copying or at least commissioning a study to evaluate their effectiveness. So, we wind up making a bunch of half-baked, ill-informed attempts to solve the problem in question. It's aggravating. I brought up electric cars in particular because while it's obviously not as pressing as homelessness, it's really easy to find a bunch of good examples of politicians, journalists, and regular people clearly never looking at the state of things beyond our own borders.

I've loved everywhere I've lived here, and I've lived in several states (Northeast, South, Southeast, and midwest (except one place in FL - I did not like that one - tho other places in FL are great!). But yeah, it takes time to find the cool spots in a town. And also yes, you have to drive there. And most (but not all) cool places require some (or a lot of) money to hang out there. (I would recommend finding open mic nights! They're usually cheap or free to get in and the people are usually unassuming dorks or nerds (in a really good way) who are just as awkward as anyone.) The kind of people who go to open mics are always incredibly interesting. And many are really talented artists, writers, and musicians. And they're usually locals! Thats where you'll find the real local flavor of a town. But once you find that place and make some friends, you can hang out at each other's houses - and that's free! It's pretty easy to make friends in the US. We're quite a friendly bunch! But yeah, you gotta search a little sometimes, but that's where you'll find the uniqueness of each state, city, and town.
Where did you visit? I reccomend checking out new england before you write off all of the US. I live in VT and it's probably as close as you can get in the US to living in a nordic style country.
