This lesson includes six drum beats that are played in the 7/4 time signature. They are all considered odd-time, due to the fact that they aren't counted like popular 4/4 drum beats. The beats are still counted with quarter notes, but include seven in each measure instead of four. Watch the included video for adddition information.

Same

Writing a song in 7/4. Blind as a wombat
It’s like bob Ross’s son got into drumming
Lol Jared is so sensitive and sweet in these older videos. Like a caring mother.
He's our drumming daddy.
Jared has been keeping up so hard just to make drummers enrich. A big salute to this amazing guy, who has been keeping Drumeo firm right since it's infancy. Thanks you Drumeo. Thank you Jared.
Now go start a prog rock band.
thank you!! i don't play the drums but i was having a real hard time trying to fathom 7/4 in my head. very straightforward. you're a good teacher!
Jared Falk - best drum lesson videos on UA-cam. Very helpful, thank you so much!
came from the future to say you have improved so much and Drumeo became such a reference for drummers all over the world!
Some of the best instructional videos I have seen.
That is some quality production...
i am happy that you are teaching something other than four time and 3 time. a lot of drumset teachers overlook different time signatures.
I love the contrived way he slowly turns his head to the other cameras for the next shots haha!
yo dude hell yeah. first video i've watched of yours and i'm already hooked. gonna be checking out everything you've got here now, and reccommending to friends starting out.
wow wasnt nearly as hard as i thought it would be. nice straightforward and informative grooving. good vid!!
Here because of Tool's Fear Inoculum and its supposedly 7/4 and 7/3 rhythm to get a first glimps. Sounds cool and great videos btw
Ha! Same!
@@shaunvaughan6376 awesome man, sound interesting right?
@@SymplyAmazingJD First new song dropped today!
Lol same
Same lol
awesome and well-presented -- thanks!
Helps me a lot to "get really into it"
Thank you!
thanx mate that video is really helpful...god bless u and have a lovely life.take care buddy.
nice 7/4 examples. thanks Jared.
I never 'felt' 7/4 rhythms but then I listened to the bassline in You're Gonna Need A Bigger Ukelele by Chris Christodoulou and it just clicked. Been vibing to 7/4 ever since.
haha, i agree from excercise one to two is quite a jump in difficulty, but I still dont think that should take anything away from learning these beats thru these videos. these videos are an awesome tool
these are all great beats and great videos.!
Great video, thanks Jared!
Well done!
Great job!
Thanks, you made it much easier for me to learn.
great video!!!
Great Love it!!
fantastic video
Enjoy see he play drums so chill and kind
the kit sounds great . .
This is what alot of the new tool album will be in. Im excited!
perfect sound
That's a nice sounding kit
very well explained, and im glad there are videos out there for this sort of thing, the only thing that ruined it for me was that he was infact playing 7/8 unless he played a very slow groove over a metronome that was set to about 250 odd bpm which would mean it woud be hard to find a cheap click that went much above that speed. never the less, good teaching techni;que, i was always taught to count 4 then 3 or vise versa or use that to make subtle changes, something fun to try seriously.
This sounds like 7/8 to me.
The songs I know in 7/4 that have more simple beats don’t sound like this. The metronome sounds like it’s on 8th notes.
brucenlittlepictures Agreed
Surely the only difference between 7/8 and 7/4 is that the duration of the beat is halved? They sound the same because they... are, right?
@@hehefunnysharkgoa9515 the accents are on different moments.
Oh boy here we go again
your drums sound delicious, you have a sweet recording setup
As well as All You Need Is Love by The Beatles. Beautiful special songs.
Beat #4... I'm running to get my SR-16 and get it in there (it's bad not having a drummer). NICE job!
How would you notate tuplets in 7/4 time? What if I wanted 2 notes against the first three notes of the 7 beats of the measure?
smooth. crisp.
Awesome.
"All The Young Dudes", by David Bowie, might that have a 7/4 mixed in the 4th bar? (bar 1, 2 being 4/4, and bar 3 being 7/4)?
Nice job. 7/4 is trippy
7/4 has to be the coolest time signature. It seems to me that Yanni must do songs in this time signature. Some you can't keep time with your foot.
Climbing up on Solsbury Hill ...
that was helpful, thanks :)
nice thanks for the idea :)
The thumbnail for this video is fantastic.
@TheManiacApproach I actually find 7/4 a lot easier to understand than 5/4, definitely more potential for groove there. Try the 1-2-3-4-1-2-3 count, it does make sense if you just keep at it.
Check out Dog Log by Phish - mid way through sick 7 / 4 time drumming ;)
@crazeddemon wich part is?
What are the hhx crashes in this setup?
you always mention the sheet music and the book tho were caniprint the musc /book off? this is a great site
It makes the difference in the accented feel of the piece and the way you count it. For 7/8 would count like, 1,2,3,4,1,2,3 for a measure. (As I normally break it up like that like 4 and 3) Where as 7/4, lets says it's a slower song you might count like, 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 1 and 2 and 3 and, for a measure.
may I know what popular hit is 7/4 beat? it seems few there..
I cant't find the sheet music on the website. Any suggestion?
hey what drum set is that? it sounds awesome.
thanks!
@Boxcutter7 What's the diff???
Vvery nice sir
I want that kit.
I dont drum but this guy gives me good ideas for my midi drums for my songs
beats 2, 4, and 5 are freakin awesome :P
@OpethCommodore i know this guy has such good transitions and pacing when hes talking!
I love how at the end of every line he looks sad to be there
I got the reference instantly, I'm not even a drummer! Still a great album.
If you want to hear a simple example of some 7/4, listen to Times Like These by Foo Fighters. Although some is 4/4, but you'll hear it in places like the intro.
or haggstrom by c418
BTW for anyone who wants to see a phenomenal deplay of a 7/4 time signature in a song, look up "The Sound of Muzak" by Porcupine Tree
@DrummerRF I noticed that, it sounds like 7/8 rather than 7/4
What's the difference between 7/4 and 7/8?
7/4 is 7 quarter notes. 7/8 is 3 and 1/2 of quarter notes.
In 7/4 time you would count:
1... 2... 3... 4... 5... 6... 7...
In 7/8 time you would count:
1... 2... 3... and
or
1 and 2 and 3 and a
Hope that helps.
@erimrtnz
They are a popular brand of shoe. Popularly worn on one's feet.
Guys it's almost ten years ago!!!
Is this from a DVD? I gotta buy it if it is.
Also the time signature 7/4 is played in Estimated Prophet a Grateful Dead song. It is not any easy song to play, correctly.
whats the difference between 7/8 and 7/4?
do you count 7/4 like 7 times 1/4? and how do you count 7/8
@lardjunky well it wouldnt be a drum lesson now would it?
Spoonman by Soundgarden is 7/4, at least in some parts, i think, but the beat is way more complex than this ones.
Hurting and Shoving by GlassJaw is also 7/4, as well as Times Like These by Foo Fighters
@KaslarProductions wrong, if he had the metronome set to play an 8th note pulse it would "click" on 1 and 2 and 3 and.. and so forth. instead he has it set for a quarter note pulse, so it "clicks" on the downbeat, and seeing as there are 7 quarter notes in 7/4, it "clicks" 7 times per measure.
Tool's time signature brought me here
If I recall correctly, isn't part of Times Like These by the Foo Fighters in 7/4?
@872andy872 sounds like somebody didnt take a look at the provided sheet music!
I can handle this in a sequencer, but holy shit thats some timing you got
Step 1: Learn 7/4
Step 2: Stare at Drum Kit
Step 3: ???
Step 4: Play Venetian Snares!!!
Can you do the seven!?
These lessons are brilliant.
I'd probably be a much better drummer if I broke what I did down like this.
Sometimes, I'd like to see this dude let rip like Garth.
'I like to play'.
@pro4mer323
7/8 contains 7 beats, an eight note each.
7/4 contains 7 beats, a quarter note each.
What type of metronome is he using that can play in a 7/4 time signature?
@JOEtheHOE28
7/4 is counted as 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-
While 7/8 is counted as 1-2-3--
There's a huge difference in the accentuation.
take a look at the provided sheet music
sweetness!
its all about feel and groove. If you have good feel and groove you'll get by. But reading music will help you.
Whats the difference between 7/8 and 7/4?
hahah took the exact words out of my mouth
Is he the guy from Starship Troopers?
He's using a boss drum machine. You can see it sitting next to him. I used to have a DR-660. It has a built in metronome that you can set for any time signature.
@kikoduartecosta The Sound of Muzak by Porcupine Tree is has a crazy 7/4 beat.
Money by Pink Floyd and Haggstrom by C418 are the best examples of 7/4 odd- time signature.
Understanding Venetian Snares' beats..
@PositivelyBored The click track he is playing to is doing 7 beats with an accent on each downbeat. So technically if he's taking each click as a quarter note. Then he's playing in 7/4 not 7/8. He never said he was doing eights on the hi hat.
@robert8558 porcupine tree is amazing
Unfamiliar (part after intro) and Sleeping Dogs And Dead Lions (great example of a metal riff in this time signature) by Oceansize really make 7/4 time flow, check them out
