And here's why you subbed to saintmillion folks. Fine craftsmanship takes time.
No junk, no algorithm-chase, no clickbait, just quality journalism and editing; comfy vibes; honest, eloquent, animated, emotive, understated speaker; and a cheeky/perceptive meta element spotting funny little things in archive footage etc
and that rarest of phenomena in our time - wit.
Thank you saintmillion for keeping it real and please continue to be you in these strange times.

Been playing SWTOR since launch. I agree that it feels super stagnant, though some of the player base is keeping out hope that Broadsword will continue to develop the game and raise it to new heights. Fingers crossed!

They need to go back to having separate classes stories. I hate the idea that my bounty hunter, imperial agent, trooper, or smuggler was a force wielding emperor in the eternal alliance. I wish the non force user classes had their own rise to power but instead of being emperor they form their own Cartel or underworld empire.

SWTOR is that game I return to once in a blue moon, a bit like STO in that vein.. I sub, because I'm happy to support when im playing, but its like a weeks worth of play that its taken them a year to build up, and then I'm done, which is kinda sad.
SWTOR is definitely an amazing game, especially the initial class stories and some of the expansion content, but its merely an "ok" MMO - but I hope it keeps powering on.

Ahazi Karrem & Roshido. That was a brand name. I never left the profession of Master doctor when everyone ran off for Holo Grinding.
In fact, I made 100s of millions of credits, so many I was selling on eBay. Everyone who were good doctors sold me their stuff and moved on to hologrinding.
Now Smedley and SOE and Lucas arts should have left perma death in the game. That would have kept the time line good. But I have hindsight now looking back.
That’s all they had to do! I made good friends in that game. My first MMO ever. I miss it to be honest. Never had the same experience with any other game I tried.😢

I appreciate the time you took to explain the progression and mechanics of the Pre-CU era SWG as it isn't something I see others do in this kind of video. I think a Star Wars MMO could work but it would need a novel game system and careful narrative to deliver a proper Force Sensitive experience, which SWTOR wasn't setup to do since it did just riffed off of WoW for gameplay. This isn't to say SWG, in any era, did much better but at least they tried a few things.
Also, I had no idea Clone Wars Adventures was a thing and everyone I've showed this video to didn't either. Thanks again!

@@Noxx55 don't forget SWG Restoration. I think it could be the best, unfortunately I've experienced some bad client crashes/freezes with it. I used to be a SWGemu fan boi, but honestly, SWG Legends is the best you can get right now. If you still long for the raw pre-CU version of the game, then SWGemu/Finalist is still king. Personally, I play both and a few others. I wish Restoration would get their issues figured out though. I feel like the short lived CU was the best version of the game. Not sure what causes the client issues with Restoration. Doesn't effect everyone, but it does effect enough to result and many complaints about it and it's leadership. I've never had issues like that with Legends or SWGemu's Finalist server.

I was in my early 20's when this came out. It remains the most ambitious and most social persistent world multiplayer game I've ever played. It was a little janky, but the dependencies on other players from healing to crafting (slicing, mining, manufacturing...), the way the player housing worked - even player cities, with voting and taxes and shuttles - and the opt-in Rebel vs Imperial PvP system (which included player created and run facilities, staffed by combat-capable NPCs and with missions you could run from them...) all really brought people together and created an enduring community despite the lack of narrative content.
I cancelled my subscription very soon after the "Combat Upgrade" came out, @saintmillion is right on the money that they killed the game by trying to make it more like World of Warcraft (right down to the little quest marker icons above NPC's heads!). The "New Game Experience" inexplicably doubled down on this clear misstep and was utterly bizarre. The core audience of 300,000 people didn't leave for WoW, which was a very different game, they left after the CU and NGE changes.
What ended my time with the game was the "Combat Upgrade" hugely downgraded my character and I could suddenly no longer wear my equipped armor or weapons (they were now arbitrarily gated behind a new skill tree) and my abilities were removed or reduced to the point my character was ineffectual in combat. The original, more flexible, skill tree system was very much part of the games appeal to the core audience and it helped to make it a more social experience, with players taking up different roles with complimentary abilities, giving people a reason to interact.
While it's true most games use a much more linear system and force you to pick classes, the sorts of character levelling is still seen in games like EVE Online or RPGs (e.g. Elder Scrolls games) and provides a lot more player agency. The class system is easier for developers balance and is certainly staple of a lot of games today (as well as classic RPGs), but a lot of players are not a fan of it and prefer more flexible skill tree systems that reward creativity and appeal to styles that don't fit one of a tiny number of archetypes.
Without the CU and the NGE the game probably could have been a going concern for years, as it was filling a niche that still hasn't really been filled by other games (the features in ever-impressive and ever-expanding No Man's Sky comes close, but remains a much less social experience, although they seem to be strongly pivoting that way). I missed SWG when it went away, and even 20 years later (now in my mid 40's) I still hope we see the like of it again.
Maybe we can get a reboot in another couple of decades, just in time for my retirement when I'll have enough time for the grind.

While I agree that it is very stagnant, I still have a lot of fun playing the game, mostly by creating individual personalities for each character I create and then making choices based on said personality, thus making each playthrough a nigh-unique experience.

As somebody whose obsessed with swinging the over glorified glowsticks, I do agree that there is a problem with Lightsabers in a multiplayer RPG. While I believe SWTOR did Jedi better than SWG, I still can't help but wonder if there is a solution for making Lightsabers accessable, yet mythical and rare. Maybe not. Maybe Lightsabers are better off in a Jedi Knight game, which I also feel a strong need for personally.
    Great video by the way.

Ironically, towards the end os SWG, the NGE kind of made Jedi rare again. At least as far as pvp goes. Very few people wanted to play Jedi for pvp, because even fewer people were willing to allow Jedi into their pvp groups. It was all about Medics, Officers, and Bounty Hunters, while Commando and Smugglers were acceptable too.

@@FlyingKlutchKick That's just an opinion. Personally, the short lived CU was SWG at it's best to me. With that said, the fluid combat of the NGE made PvP the best in the end. • @clintlewis1715
    @clintlewis1715 28 днів тому

I still play SWG. Two different versions of it and one in between. SWG Legends (NGE), SWG Evolve (NGE with some elements of CU), and SWG Restoration (CU). To this day, I believe SWG was/is the greatest MMORPG ever created. Certainly the best Star Wars MMORPG ever created. Nothing has come close and SWG did things that haven't been recreated since. Yeah, SWTOR was prettier and the cinematic story line was great, but in the end, it was very lacking compared to SWG. Honestly, even though people got upset, the CU was SWG at it's best and in the end, the NGE was Combat/PvP at it's best. If someone were to create an SWG server with the CU skill based leveling system and with the fluid combat style of the NGE, that would be golden. Something that SWG Evolve is actually trying to do. SWG Restoration would be awesome, but they have issues that need be resolved. Until then, SWG Legends is #1. There's a reason why it is the most populated SWG server. For those that still want the raw pre-CU SWG, SWGemu/Finalizer is still going and is the 2nd most populated SWG server.
SWTOR had major issue right out of the gate. Primarily it's default resolution and frame settings that caused "out of range" display errors (on PC) when many people first tried to launch the game. Basically, they ended up with the the black screen of death. I knew a lot of people and multiple guilds from SWG that jumped into (or at least tried) SWTOR right from the start. Most everyone I knew, had issues getting the game going due to the "out of range" error and just simply gave up. They turned to SWGemu (a pre-CU SWG emulator that had been around for a long time) or one of the newer SWG emulators that were popping up like Project SWG and finally SWG Legends.
There was a fix for SWTOR's "out of range" display error. It was actually figured out by the players that were intent on getting the game to work. They shared the fix on numerous sites, which involved users getting into the SWTOR game files .ini settings and manually changing the resolution and frame rate settings, just to be able to launch the game. Instead of actually fixing the issue (which would have been a simple fix) EA staff simply pointed users to a player forum thread that explained how to find and change the .ini settings in the game files. People not comfortable with doing such things, just moved on.
Once you got into SWTOR, due to the story line, it was fun for a while. One thing that SWG folks liked about it though, was the ability to mix skill points in your class tree. Obviously, EA didn't learn from SOE's mistakes and they revamped the class system into a streamlined cookie cutter progression system. Nearly everyone I knew from the SWG days bounced at that point and started playing on SWG Legends. I stuck it out until they revamped the crafting system. Wasn't hard for me to leave at that point as I was already totally bored with the game and it's rinse and repeat system.
The "free to play" model (which really means pay to win) was the final straw for most people I know. It didn't help the game at all from the player perspective. It gave the appearance of a thriving community, but it didn't improve the rate of getting cues for warzones or battle grounds, because the free to play players had very limited access. As a result more subscriber players left, which further increased cue times.
I stuck it out until they revamped the crafting system. Wasn't hard for me to leave at that point as I was already totally bored with the game and it's rinse and repeat system. By that time, I was already playing on SWG emulator servers more than I was logging into SWTOR anyway.
I never looked back or even reminisced about my time playing SWTOR. It just never had the same allure as SWG did/does. I continue playing SWG to this very day and have never gotten bored with it.

Having played Star Wars Galaxies and SWTOR, I generally see SWTOR's problems of practically being a Star Wars skin for generic mmo classes. This is really what gave Star Wars Galaxies the finishing blow with NGE (The removal of individual player classes and addition of standard starting classes) ; SWTOR limits the feel of those special classes by making it class based. You are not really a Jedi or Sith. You are a warrior/knight with a Star Wars skin, your lightsaber is not a lightsaber, but just a glowing hot stick never dealing the damage a lightsaber would.
Instead of having really an open world, most planets feel like levels. It's not a bad game, but you won't find the real star wars experience in the gameplay.
Star Wars Galaxies had a good open world, at least for it's time. It gave you options to be who you want to be. But also had a problematic start, with pressure from above and ideas that couldn't be fully implemented. You know that WoW Hardcore experience. SWG thought about making Jedi a hardcore class with permadeath.
Many say Jedi was the thing that killed Galaxies, but I don't think it was the way the devs added hints for people, that started this destruction. The devs being under constant pressure, not having enough time, while members left for other companies, led to the devs implementing a bad system of how to aquire Jedi. Which generally was the worst design option. Having to master specific professions in a specific order, that is both completely randomized for every character is just bad design. Of course now one really just happened to become a Jedi, because it would be a complete coincidence that a person would have the exact idea of what professions to master in the exact order that is required to unlock Jedi for this specific character. It's not better than giving everyone an individual password to guess at a random location. Only that their way meant for people to grind professions they didn't like.
So what can we expect in the future? A better SWG, giving people freedom again? Or SWTOR revamped to mix with Disney canon?
I guess the big era of MMOs has ended. It costs too much and people rather play games with normal coop or multiplayer features, that are easier to implement than full good implemented MMO mechanics. Even though SWTOR still holds up, MMOs like WoW have a hard time to really stay alive, just being one big failed expansion or update away to really lose and MMOs like FFXIV making a change with more interesting gameplay. I just don't see devs being able to pull off another big MMO that really changes the market and it's very unlikely to be a Star Wars MMO with Emperor Mickey in control.

As a dedicated fan of Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) and other sci-fi MMOs of the past, it's disheartening to see the continued trend of MMO companies hyperfocusing on World of Warcraft's mechanics and setting as the sole formula for success. While WoW undeniably set the standard for many aspects of the genre, it's frustrating to see the industry reluctant to explore other rich and diverse settings. There's an overabundance of high fantasy MMOs saturating the market, leaving fans of sci-fi, cyberpunk, modern settings, and other non-high fantasy genres feeling neglected. The appeal of exploring galaxies far, far away, or navigating the gritty streets of a cyberpunk dystopia shouldn't be overshadowed by the familiarity of elves, orcs, and dragons.
It's time for MMO developers to branch out and embrace the vast potential of different settings and themes. Whether it's the immersive world of Star Wars, the neon-lit streets of a cyberpunk metropolis, or the intrigue of modern espionage, there's a whole universe of untapped creativity waiting to be explored. As fans, we crave diversity and innovation in our gaming experiences. It's my hope that developers will listen to the voices of their communities and start venturing into new territories, offering fresh and exciting worlds for us to explore together.

There will never be another Star Wars MMO, and frankly there shouldn't be. Disney will most likely want to set it in the sequel trilogy era because they still are unable to wrap their heads around the fact that nearly the entire fan base hated those movies so much that it just about permanently ruined Star Wars for them.

I think the jedi problem is overrated. They are essentially a pure dps class that can sacrifice their dps to tank or heal. Furthermore so long as jedi are overpowered vs common ai enemies it doesn't really matter if the other players Jango Fett cosplay is able to fight on equally terms albeit asymmetrically.
Increase firing ranges and give non jedi enemies enemies slow or snare attacks and the ability to use energy shields. Or force the Jedi to slow down in order to deflect incoming fire. (they should still tear you apart once they reach melee range but.
Another strategy is simply to put a couple of high level jedi in PVP with lower level non force users (or scale the non force users down).

@@TyphoonBlast Disney, as the owners of the Star Wars IP, are the ones who grant studios licenses to make games/movies/shows in the Star Wars universe. If the studios are making bad games it's because Disney is intentionally granting their licenses to poor quality studios and green lighting their mediocre projects.

I would even be happy with a Star Wars themed game similar to Conan Exiles or Dayz or Ghost Recon Wildlands....I cant stand playing games as a random protagonist, so the next Star Wars games MUST have character creation for me to even consider buying it.

even today sony is greedy as hell. they pulled their xperia phones out of the US, India, and China markets because "it doesn't sell well enough" not realizing those sales in general were giving them money. get "some" sales or "none at all" and they chose none at all. which boggles my mind as an intelligent individual. even if it doesn't sell well in a market, some sales is better than none. and its already biting sony in the ass for not selling in US/India/China as their 10 mark 6 is already on sale 30% off and its still in pre-order states.... well didn't you fuck up.... lmao. Sony greed is something that will never stop it seems. and that sucks because they should just grow up and drop the greed. make good products people want and the money flows. i would argue their biggest failure for sales in the US is not selling their phones at carriers. you can't go to verizon and see the sony phone on display.... you have apple, samsung, and like 1 or 2 other brands.... well no wonder they dont sell. you dont make it easy for the consumer to buy one. sure i will buy one, because im a nerd, im okay with buying outside verizon's stores. but most consumers aren't. make it easy or fail to make sales. it would be akin to only selling the ps5 online at amazon or from sony direct. no best buy, no target, no walmart. where 99% of customers shop....

hero engine's biggest win was the ability for every developer to work on the game at the same time.... typically with say unreal engine 4, you can only have one developer editing the main game file at a time. everyone else has to wait their turn. or work on shit in a separate file, and then ADD IT to the main file later. only recently with unreal engine 5 have they updated so that multiple devs can edit the same hosted file at the same time speeding up development. that's why the old republic mmo was created so fast. because of the simultaneous iteration speed.

for the "wrap up/future" part of this video. i feel mmorpgs are getting a bad rep right now because we keep seeing developers make the choice of super dumbed down gameplay because its what world of warcraft invented. its basically saying "you, the gamer, are a fucking idiot, and you dont need complex gameplay because youre too dumb to enjoy it" which makes no sense to me.... i want an mmorpg that has complex systems. make the UI clean. make the gameplay simple in terms of interacting with the world. but make the "behind the scenes" stuff complex. there was a time in mmorpg gaming where picking a race meant you had racial bonus or negatives. picking a class gave you a starting point. you would have extra status points to spend to make your character more unique, like adding to your strength or intelligence. and then as you leveled up you got to choose where you wanted to place your stat points and you got to pick the skills you wanted. you weren't FORCED to play a specific way. modern MMORPG took out all of the "free will" aspect that mmorpgs are supposed to have. so you pick a race, a class, and everything is planned for you. the skills and abilities, how your character evolves, you have NO CHOICE. and that's boring. what happened to building a unique character? what happened to roleplay? its gone. all in the guise of balance and "gamers r dumb" mentality.

I feel so bad for Star Wars Galaxies players. Lucas Arts effed you guys up so bad and SoE and their reuptation has been trash for such a long time.
I was too young to even know about MMO's, let alone specific ones like Everquest or Star Wars Galaxies. I would be playing Runescape in 2005, lol.
But really, the entire management of SWG was truly terrible.
Wait, SWToR made more money from Microtransactions than subs alone back in 2013? What the eff, that's absurd, especially since at that point, the game was still doing really well for an MMO in a WoW landscape and soon to be Final Fantasy XIV landscape too. Damn, even in 2016 they were able to claw back to 500k or so subscribers?
Oofs, its sad to see how much work on SWToR work slowed down from 2020 onwards. I personally don't see Broadsword doing anything good to Old Republic. If they don't go even heavier on the microtransactions or acting scummy like they have been with the recent achievements debacle and things, the game will just live on as it is with nothing new. I personally think they really need to drop voice acting and just work on more story, with ending the old stuff and starting new tales.
I don't think there will be a new Star Wars related MMO for the foreseeable future. I think The Old Republic would need to be dead for at least a decade or more before someone tackles that gaming nightmare. Maybe 30-40 years from now? Lol, I really doubt it, though.

Few things that crippled this game the most:
    - Old graphics engine that should have been replaced a long time ago
    - Sh*tting on Kotor II story.
    - Reducing Revan to a flashpoint enemy boss and then rehashing him multiple times likes for the expansions "Shadows of Revan" and then bringing him back again but properly this time to kill the Sith Emperor once and for all.
    - Lack of focus on pvp encounters, the only people who still play this game with a passion in 2024 are mainly PVPERS!
    - Convoluted gearing systems implemented throughout the years, best one was probably in the Knights of the Eternal Throne although the rng for the best gear parts was way too low.
    - Too much emphasis on the "RPG" elements of the game and not enough on "MMO".
    - Some of the leading devs refused to put old legacy armors as craftables into the game because they wanted to focus on "new concepts" as they elaborated in the SWTOR discord community, to me this signals the more widespread problem not only in gaming but entertainment business as a whole meaning directors and devs come on board to "make their mark" on the franchise instead of carefully listening to the fans needs. This kind of mentality shouldn't be tolerated within any industry because people of that kind will run the franchises into the ground for the sake of massaging their own ego.

    • @Jackfromshack
      @Jackfromshack 2 місяці тому +1

Focusing on solo play in MMO is what killed WoW for me. When there is no point in cooperating with other players, even more so, when other players interfere with your "solo content" - then what is the point of being an MMO? Just make solo game. The same problem with Elder Scrolls online. Modern devs do not understand MMO concept and why people want to play them in the first place.
