How I REALLY Lost 100 Pounds - My Story

  • It's hard to describe but this is how I lost 100 pounds.
There wasn't a quick fix, it was a journey, lots of lessons learned. This is how I did it, all the things I changed to get to a healthier me.
2 years ago I started stating that I was going to be working on my health. I didn't know what that meant at the time beyond that I knew I needed to change. I wanted to learn and teach myself, find new ways and be open minded but also give myself room to fail.
I'm still working on it. Not just my weight, but my over health health. Mental health, physical health... its all tied together!
I was nervous about releasing this as its so different from my norm. But just like running was different for me, or yoga was different, you don't grow without experiencing something new so here we go!

I’m sitting here at the heaviest of my life, 306lbs, looking for inspiration. Seeing that weight on the scale made me more depressed than it did inspire me to lose it. I wanted to see videos of people working out and losing weight, not just talking. That’s why I never watch these kinds of videos. Yet this video had me hooked from start to finish. This was really helpful to my mindset. Thank you brother.

for me personally, I started doing small exercises. One thing, and would just push myself to do it everyday until it became routine (took about a week). For me i got so heavy because I felt trapped and incapable of doing anything, or changing anything about my life. Until I started doing introductory exercises.
I started out doing just 10 wall push ups, not only was I trying to lose weight through intermittent fasting (aka tapping into willpower to eat only 1 meal a day) but I was also trying to rebuild muscle again after 5 years of neglect.
I started out at 280+ a month ago, fast forward to now and I'm at 266. It's definitely possible, but it's going to be slow. Very very slow. And sometimes you'll plateu, but it's okay, that's normal, you'll start losing again if you keep it going regardless.
Repetition is super important, and above all else, self forgiveness. There are going to be days where you'll slip, I have, but don't beat yourself up over it. It happens, it's going to happen, and when you're trying to change from unhealthy habits, it's important to forgive yourself for your slip ups and keep going regardless.
And if you do feel bad for your mistakes, then make up for it somewhere else within your capabilities. Like walking for 10 minutes.

You can definitely do it. Find out what works for you. Not everything will. The biggest issue is that anything you do needs to be something you can incorporate into your life as a habit, and it must be sustainable. Anyone can lose weight on extreme diets or exercise but virtually no one can keep that up. Look at the history of the Biggest Loser contestants and what happened afterwards. For me stopping alcohol, going mostly plant based, meditation and lots and lots walking worked. It’s taken few years but I’m getting there. PM me if you ever want to vent about it.

14 months ago 225 lb and long time high blood pressure
I'm 63 now and better shape than since I was in my 20's
180 lb and normal blood pressure
I did use intermittent fasting periodically - Key being never go "truly"hungry, but don't snack. If you get truly hungry Eat a fulfilling meal.
"Pure Sweet" brand of stevia white powder made it easy for me to eliminate sugar completely. Heaping 1/2 teaspoon is enough to sweeten a gallon of tea or coffee.

Mark, thank you for sharing this. I was diagnosed with diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure nearly four years ago. I had suffered with acid reflux for twenty years. Omeprazole kept it i check but I never liked taking medications. I went keto first and lost some weight and everything was improving but the reflux and cholesterol. We tried various different foods. A few more months in and I looked to Derica my wife and said, “When is the last time we ate meat?”. It was over two weeks and I had not had reflux at all. So, research into plant based diets showed positive results for all my issues. I ended up losing about 40 lbs, dropped my a1c from 11.7 to under 6, no longer needed blood pressure meds and got my cholesterol back close to normal. I still go through a cycle. I am really good for a few months, then get lazy, then get back on track again. Just the other day I was saying almost exactly what you said about hard rules and building habits. A hard rule makes me rebel. No one is perfect and we can’t hold even ourselves to those ideals. I think you have done an amazing thing and should be incredibly proud. Also… we are in St Pete and have family in Orlando. Would love to meet you both for some vegan food if you were up for it. I know, rando on the internet wants to meet, but we are also full time UA-cam creators so we actually have a bit in common. Anyway, enough creepiness. Good on you and we wish you all the best.

Thank you Mark for documenting your journey. I am in the last phase of my Noom membership and am now trying to shore up lessons learned about perceived hunger/desires and how to challenge/redirect them. My generation was born out of the clean plate club forged during the depression years (my parents). Eat as much as you can, when it's available, and don't leave anything on the plate. Of course modern industry has figured out how to exploit that ethic by providing us with cheap, fast, high calorie, high fat, low nutrient fodder. So cooking for ourselves is one of the best ways to avoid that trap, and I thank you for trying to be part of the solution.

Watching your video, it became obvious that you finally got that clarity, that mind shift, change of attitude that suddenly finally it all made sense. For me, it was November last year when my 86 year old father-in-law, who had always been active, climbed another mountain. And I thought, I struggle to walk down the street, and I feel 100 years old at the age of 48. So the gym that I was a member of for years, but hardly went… I signed a competition to win free coaching, which I didn’t win, but I ended up signing up for a professional coach for an exercise and nutrition program, which I though I’ll just try it for a couple of months. 12 months later, I’m still with my coach because I don’t want to stop the gains that I’ve achieved! And just being responsible to someone makes me Achieve each week. The main realisation was learning how to eat to a caloric macro each week. And that you need to burn so many calories through exercise. I said from the start to my head coach: I’m not here to diet. I’m here to start exercise and healthy eating for life, with my active 86 year old father-in-law as my inspiration. And as a parent to 3 boys, I want to be alive and active at 86. So we go through program changes every couple of months of calorie deficit and then weight maintenance, changing training routines to work on different strength groups… and I’ve never felt better in my life. Best thing I ever did for myself. But I wouldn’t be where I am, without that clarity, mind shift, change of attitude moment…

Mark, YOU are a gift. Your sincerity and integrity are a constant and your curiosity has been a blessing as you inspire exploration of our world and life through the way you share your own journey. No boundaries! Always seeking to improve on tastes/flavors/life. I also used to eat out a lot and portion sizes and addictive foods began replacing healthy choices…until I became plant-based in 2020. I LOVE cooking everyday and making healthy foods for my husband and me. All addictions to sugar, meat, cheese and eggs simply resolved, making it easy (for the 1st time in my life) to make healthy choices I instead began craving. You and Monica are an ideal couple, allowing each other space to grow your souls and nourish ours. This is the type of contagiousness that we all need. Thank you and I look forward to more from you (and Monica too!!).
