Thank you so much for these videos. I'm a first time homeowner and the previous owner used that stupid behr deckover garbage so my deck was hideous. I just finished the demo and I'm about to replace a few joists and put a new top on it. The old deck had a ton of seams and I now understand that having a breaker board down the middle is better so I've been trying to figure out the best way to do add that in. I'll be doing my first-ever ladder blocking over the next week, thanks to you! Appreciate you so, so, so much! Love your work!
Got your A-game going on these videos. I’m definitely not a construction or builder guy, but your explanations on how to go about building a deck are easy to understand and very informative. Thank you. I would subscribe, but last I checked, I had over 100 scrips going. I may anyway just to help your channel 👍
Hey Dr. Do you ever trim the joist after adding the field boards to make sure you get a full width board, or do you calculate it? If you calculate it what measurement do you use for a 3/16" gap? Is it as simple as using 5 11/16"?
Have a question for pergola with 20x18 dimension I am running 2X8 for Rafters and 2x12 for beams. I am planning to install rain proof on top. Do I need have blocking between the rafters which are running 18 feet from ledger to beam?
Do you always need to do blocking in the same width as the joist? Ex: you have 2x10s. Can you use 2x4 for blocking or 2x6 as a cheaper alternative? Wondering for both support for railing and picture framing where the deck boards are parallel to joists.
Thank you for doing things the right way, If I had a dollar for every deck I’ve replaced because it was built incorrectly I’d be rich! Well not really but you know what I mean! Thanks brother
Hey Doc, thanks for the video. When you put the Ledger board I saw that you use 3 different screws, one of them goes directly to the beam of the house. My question is how do you locate the position of that beam?
If you are talking about the existing floor joists inside the house, they removed the old deck and siding so Dr decks could see what they could attach their ledger board to and I’m sure they remembered or took measurements to know the exact location of the joists spacing/location
@@dannymueller4318 im about to frame my deck , what's wrong with the same galvanized 3 1/4" framing nail as used to frame the rest of the deck ?[air nailer ]
@@robertstephenson9839 nothing wrong with that. That's what I would do for blocking, for sure. I was pointing out how expensive it is for them to attach blocking this way. But I definitely recommend timberloks for attaching the ledger and any railing posts/any elbow braces you're adding
Hey Jason, we talked on the phone awhile ago. I live in WA as well and build decks up north from you (skagit county). Who did you use to install your helical piles?

What product do you use to brush on the boards after cutting them to re seal
I apply brown wood preservative, copper nathenate, to seal
Can you please address how you made your post to beam connection with no Simpson hangars?
Btw Great job. Enjoy watching & picking up ideas. Thank you.
Simpson strong tie advises against mixing screws and nails on same hanger ?
The best video I've watched so far since I've Subscribed, you're educating on how mine failed. Thankyou.

DrDecks, what’s your opinion of glueing 45* corner Trex?? I’m tempted.

My new Milwaukee still has the diamond you need to knockout. Good video.
Doctor decks. Any good books on building decks? Recommendations?
Do you have any issues with premature rot on your blocking, when you run a solid surface brace instead of a ladder type?
What screws are you using for the blocking attachment? TIA
Looks like it's going to be a nice deck. Also good job treating the cut ends. So many people skip that. What treatment do you use?

What type of lumber is in the video? Thanks
I do the rain bladder system. Can I turn my blocking on edge to get the stiffness at least at the bottom of the Joists

IRC says blocking has to be 60% minimum of the joist depth.
Do you need to block if you have joists hanging at both ends?
Subscribed! Really appreciate your knowledge sir!
Do you crown the blocking it...?
Really. It apply's here as well.
Thank you for doing things the right way,

Think about what you said, let alone typed.
Great job. I would want a lil more lag action. Bigger. With all due respect.
But I build up in snow load land.
Merry Xmas
Newbie here. What was the material you're painting on the board ends?

Austin is correct
Anyone know the name of the carpenters square ruler he used with a special feature to take the blade off?
Just picked up skill sidewinder lefty
Are you using ledger locks to attach the blocking?
Timberloks
@@drdecks do you find that it's necessary for just blocking vs a regular screw? That's quite a cost just for the blocking.

how do you decide which joins spaces need ladder blocking ?
What do you use to seal the cut ends of pressure treated lumber?
Beggin for subscribers but cant answer questions is not cool! On his part!
Fuking awesome
That’s a long stretch for 2x8 joists
Materials alone for this project must cost $75-100k
I would prolly subscrib if you ever or more offten then next ta never would respond ta the courtesy questions asked........
Sorry. You know, timing.
Subscrube
This is some BS!! You never show how to install the ledger. When you do show it you don’t show how you inspect the rim joist.
