    Replaced my bearing yesterday. It was easier than most online said it would be. What was not easy was replacing the intermediate steering shaft. It is still on the truck as it is rust welded on the lower steering shaft. Rattle is gone but I am going to replace the entire shaft to the gearbox here soon. Glad I was under hood as I saw a slice in my serpentine belt and replaced that. 24 mm wrench helped seating new bearing.

    I've yet to have to replace this bearing on a chevy but I'm sure my days coming as I'm currently looking for an older suburban. However, I have replaced the wire ribbon spool in other vehicles, yeah, its a bit of a pain but doable. Been twisting wrenches too many years to back away from it now, lol...looks like an engineering issue with chevy steering columns. The shift with a plastic caged bearing is the collapse zone for the steering column in case of an accident. This is a very good piece of information to know, thanks for the share....

      Hello sir where did put the zip tie? I like your idea. Thanks for responding?

    • @Patriot-bn9om
      @Patriot-bn9om 3 роки тому +1

      @@minnesota7010 I inserted it through the hole (the hole points up when the part is installed) on outer round edge of the green plastic part that holds the actual bearings. Then, wrapped the zip tie around a metal part above it. This just pulls the bearing holder to remove the play, or movement, of the bearings or maybe the movement of the actual steering wheel shaft. I inserted another zip tie to be sure. I actually stole the idea from another gentleman who had posted a video about it.

    That’s a back breaking job i also replaced the shaft while I was at it got the improved doorman part. 👍🏻

    I did this yesterday. The old one was green and thought great I’m swapping the same part. But the old green one wasn’t a dorman. It had 6 splines and the dorman has 8 splined teeth on the bearing. Took 30 to 45 minutes to do. Take off gas pedal and gas perch for more room. Take the shaft out and you can push it in with just fingers. Grease it before hand and it’ll go. Just have to push in pretty firm with just fingers. It’s really simple to do.

    Before you do anything,
    Take plastic cover off top of steering wheel where flasher button is.
    Start truck and turn wheel until you can see a 25 torx head screw. Tighten. Turn wheel opposite until other torx head comes around. Tighten. Maybe put some locktite on them?

    Would this “steering wheel rattle” cause the front end to feel like it’s rattling when going over a pothole ? I can almost see the hood bouncing rapidly... seems like it would be more than a steering issue but I’m leaning towards it after throwing parts at it for a while now....

    • @RustbeltMechanic
      @RustbeltMechanic  4 роки тому +1

      Yes this could def be the issue. You can check by reaching up under the dash and grabbing the smaller end of the column just below this bearing and try to move it. If it moves or makes noise any at all it’s bad.

      They are garbage. Not worth the 30 cents worth of plastic they are made of. Just take a die grind or dremel tool with a cutting disc and cut a small slot or two along the length of the steel sleeve and throw a hose clamp around that bitch.
