Renault 1.5 dCi EGR clean

  • This is how I removed and cleaned the EGR and intake pipe on my 2003 1.5 Clio dCi 65. If you have a different engine to the 65, the things you see in this video may be different to what you see. If you have a petrol engine, things in the video will definitely be different. Prepare yourself for this outcome.
    The EGR valve is full of some lovely carcinogenic soot: wear appropriate gloves if you fancy cleaning yours...

    Nice job, I never disassembled the valve, I was worrying to brake it. But now, thanks to your video, I will do that.
    I'm not cleaning the pipe, it's a waste of time for me. Just throw it to the stove or fire for 5-10 minutes and take it back clean. Obviously the coating of the pipe would not be so shiny after, but it doesn't affect on the work of engine. Don't forget to take off o-rings, I forgot and had to find something similar.

    • @KomradeShotabollokov
      @KomradeShotabollokov  6 років тому +1

      It will be a nice day until one of the glow plugs snap off in the cylinder head. I haven't replaced any of mine but I understand that they can be problematic if they've been there for a while. Apparently it's a good idea to get the engine hot first so that the metal expands and aids removal, or so I've read. Anyway, I wish you luck!

    • @maniacse
      @maniacse 6 років тому

      Komrade Shotabollokov diagnostic reports glow plug error, therefor I want to change them and check cables in same time. Also, if the metal will expand - will it close the hole or open? That's the question. :)

    • @KomradeShotabollokov
      @KomradeShotabollokov  6 років тому

      The idea might be that the cylinder head experiences greater overall heat than the glow plug body, thus expands more. I haven't tried it but experience tells me that there is good logic to it.

      So, here I am: glow plugs - check! Air filter - check! Cabin air filter - check! Fuel filter - check! But EGR cleaning - I was too scared and too cold, so maybe next time.. :) About glow plugs - I followed Oscaro guide here on youtube - I liked the way of loosening (spray WD40, leave it, blow it away with compressed air). It goes fine, little high-pitch noise from thread and tool, but no big deal. I cracked one connector from injector, but thankfuly it works eitherway.. Also, my EGR setup is a bit different - I have 1,5dCi on 2007 Kangoo..

    Hello Komrade, your video is really helpfull. My little 2003 clio2 1.5dci has lost the jumpines it had :) it just doesn't accelerate properly, which happened all of the sudden whilst driving on the highway. I started losing speed and accelerations are terrible. 2 different mechanic have have up on it. You think cleaning this will help ? *Its also smoking black a bit, but that's been going on for the past year*

    • @KomradeShotabollokov
      @KomradeShotabollokov  6 років тому +1

      Hi Flyzoor, cleaning the EGR can't hurt but it may not solve
      your problem if two mechanics have investigated and not found the issue (unless
      they were shit mechanics). Firstly, do you have the EML on? If so I would read the
      DTCs with CAN Clip or DDT2000 and rectify the cause of the codes. Measure the
      boost when you accelerate hard using the above software or a cheap eBay Wi-Fi/Bluetooth
      ODB2 reader and a phone app. My dCi (65) makes 1.1BAR (2.1BAR absolute) peak and
      1.0 BAR (2.0 BAR absolute) steady to 3000+rpm. If your engine makes noticeably
      less than this then you’ll need to investigate why boost is being cut.
      Excessive black smoke from the exhaust is a fuelling issue: too much diesel for
      the mass of air. If your dCi is one of the more powerful versions (80 / 100PS)
      then your intercooler or other boost intake pipework may have a leak. If this
      is the case then the MAP sensor may register this and cut boost or enable limp
      mode, reducing your power.

    • @KomradeShotabollokov
      @KomradeShotabollokov  6 років тому

      Hi Paul, thanks for the comment. Hearing my engine before and after wouldn't have helped anyone: it sounded the same. I had no running issues but the EML was on under low boost conditions (off under boost). Cleaning the EGR did not solve the problem but the car still ran fine and it would have helped the general running, I'm sure.
      Take care with Easystart; identiying the root cause of the starting problem early on will prevent knock-on problems later down the line with prolonged use of Easystart. After experiencing cold start issues with another DI diesel of mine and researching the problem further, I can offer the following advice:
      Despite many components seeming like they might be the cause (glow plugs, EGR valve, various sensors etc.) one recurring culprit seems to be more responsible than the others; the injectors. Your DI engine doesn't really need the glow plugs to start unless you live in Scandinavia, they just help. The injection pressure alone should be enough. If I were you, and certainly before spending any significant money, I would perform a leak off test on your injectors. If one (or more) leak back more than they should, you'll have starting problems. The injectors are often overlooked yet are often the cause. All you need is 4 small bottles/cups and 4 lengths of tube connected to each injector return line, then crank the engine for a minute or so. The volume of fuel in each cup/bottle should be the same and should be small. If one is noticeably more than the other three you have found your culprit and this will likely be the cause of your starting problem. Four plastic cups/four 200ml bottles are readily available from a supermarket and 30cm x 4 tubing is all you need (check the ID on the existing return lines before you go to the pet shop to buy it). The whole setup should be less than a tenner and I bet it reveals more interesting information than the other common 'fixes'.
      An injector that robs the rail of pressure is a classic cause of poor starting on a DI diesel engine, especially with age and mileage.
      If you check Renaultforums (and probably others) you'll see what I mean. Search YT for 'diesel leak off test' and you'll see how easy it is and what to look out for.
      Injector number 1 on this car is utterly knackered: ua-cam.com/video/Gaqx9ATOg3A/v-deo.html
      All 4 injectors on this car work beautifully: ua-cam.com/video/F9pTdgxk20Y/v-deo.html
      Whatever you try, let everyone know how you get on; it might help someone else.
      Cheers

      I got it off ok. On mine 2008 1.5Dci engine, there are three upward pointing metal spigots, that go into rubber grommets on the underside of the cover. On two of these, the fingers can be placed under the cover and the position of the grommet can be felt. One is above the oil cap and the other is diagonally opposite near the air intake hose, so it is possible to apply direct lift to these two. The third is below the oil cap, it cant be reached directly, but will come away easily once the other two are off.

      It did not stop the EML coming on but I cleaned the EGR on a hunch anyway: there was no guarantee it would affect the EML and I knew that before I started. This is not normally a recommended course of action for identifying and rectifying a fault (with anything) but I was curious as to the state of the EGR and it was a nice day outside. Despite no effect on the status of the EML, the car drives perfectly and I'm glad I cleaned the valve. The true cause of the EML will remain a mystery to be solved at a later date.

      @@KomradeShotabollokov great video btw I'm gonna do the same to mine, but would u need to reset the ECU by disconnecting the battery and by doing that will that turn the EML off?
      Cheers Bill

      You don't have to reset the ECU (you don't have to disconnect the battery). As a method of clearing the EML, I have never found that disconnecting the battery works but I haven't tried it on every car, I must admit.
