This is one of the best maintenance videos for Mercury 9.9 and similar outboards. It deserves wide viewership. I encourage the authors to produce more. Thank you.
Great video. When changing the engine oil on this outboard, it is very important to tilt down and back up again and drain a second time. There is quite a bit of oil that gets trapped and thats the only way to get it out.
Fantastic video. I do all of these steps to my Tohatsu. One thing to add... At 1:43: After the engine runs out of fuel, apply full choke and attempt to restart it. You will probably find that it will run a little longer. This will ensure that you get every last drop of fuel out. If you take care of your equipment, it will take care of you.
The best informative video I have ever watched for Mercury 9.9 maintenance. Clearly explained most of the aspects. Pls make another one to instruct audioance for carburator maintenance.
My personal opinion is oil should be added until it's at the top mark of the dipstick after a warm oil change because it has yet to travel to all the internal passages within the engines oiling system. After it has been run, then anywhere within the cross hatched area is fine.
This was very good. Thanks. I just purchased a Mercury 9.9 this past week. I also purchased an Evinrude 90 hp Etec last year. No scheduled maintenance required for the Etec for 3 years. And believe it or not, the Etec winterizes itself.
Are there risks if you don't add oil into each spark plug cylinder? Should you only do the oil injection if the engine will be sitting in storage for a few months? For example if you are in the middle of season and changing the plugs, do you also want to inject oil while mid-season maintenance? I am doing spark plug maintenance on my MerCruiser 350 MAG and also my 9.9 Mercury Kicker and will be fishing here in a week. I haven't seen the oil injection yet...and trying to better educate myself without much luck on my google researching. AWESOME video.
When starving the engine of gas for long term storage, just before the motor dies, pull the choke full. It will run again for a couple of second. Now you are empty!
For Winter storage should I try to completely run motor out of fuel? I was told by a guy that if you do that then the internal fuel lines may dry out. if the motor is only sitting idle for 3-4 months leaving gas in the internal fuel lines wont really hurt it. Has anyone els eheard that or could comment? - thanx Harvey
First off this is a great video and very helpful. Well done! My question for you is about the oil in the cylinders come spring when dewinterizing. Will this oil make starting the engine difficult?
i injected 30ml of oil into my cylinders. Now i realize from reading on that it was only 3ml not 30, will this cause me problems with starting up in the spring?
Thanks for the video!! Very useful tips. At 0:47 the gasoline drops from the tip of fuel line. That is a big problem for me also. Can you advice something to connect them without dropping. Sometimes it drops like a fountain :) and makes me angry after gasoline touch my hands :/ Thanks again.
I've got a 2005 15hp 4 stroke. Had same problem. The seal nearest the ball bearing on the inside of the male fuel connection was ripped, hard to see. Replaced it. Then found a hairline crack in the fuel line connector on the motor, replaced just to be on the safe side. Then found a zip tie that was not tight on the engine side fuel connector. Tighten it and decided it's not a good solution, put in a metal adjustable screw clamp, much tighter. Then I found that the quicksilver 3.2 gallon gas tank uses a circular valve to keep fuel pressure from building at the connections nearest the motor. It connects first to the tank, then hand pump, then to the motor. Now the pressure does not climb and cause dripping with the changes in heat. Also important to understand the valve on the tank cap itself. Hope that helps. Apparently the EPA made changes to the fuel lines or something that has caused problems. I saw a UA-cam video on it. Also, having the tank full helps reduce excess pressure.
@@randomdiyguy1883 thank you very much for your kindly answer.i will check one by one and try all the ways as you told.hope i ll find a solution like you.best.
Great video! But let me ask you a question, why did you use Quicksilver HighPerformance Gear Lube because it was recommended by the manufacturer for motors from 75 HP ?
@@22gladijator manual page 73 Yes, you write correctly, this is for lubricating engine parts. There was a question about the oil that you filled in the gearbox of the engine.
Looks like to me that you added 3ml engine oil to the spark plug hole instead of 30ml. I was a little disappointed to find out that. I added about 40ml in total and some went out when I spin the fly wheel. I think I should be good. Hope this does not cause any trouble to others.
read the manual page 77: remove the spark plug and add approximately 30ml of engine oil or inject a five second spray of storage seal inside of each cylinder. A little engine oil left me, so I use the first metod. engine oil or fogging spray is the same thing.
As you Said it is written in the users manual to put 30 ml oil into each cylinder but you poured 3 ml . Or did you repeat what is seen in the video 10 times for each cylinder ? In fact, It seems to me that 30 ml of engine oil might be very much for each cylinder. In other videos that I watched about winterizing, recommended amount is a spoon of engine oil four each cylinder.
@@onetwothreefour111Might want to re-think that. I saw a guy get thrown out of his boat and his boat kept circling him in the water for a long time until it ran out of gas. We could only watch from the shore. No one could get near him to rescue him.
I have this same motor is it normal for reverse to be harder to change into then forward? When I go forward it’s a smooth exchange from neutral to forward but reverse its harder to turn the handle and when it does engage it’s more of a hard kick instead of a smooth transition?

be sure, add 0.8 liter motor oil. if you add motor oil over dose your engine will not start up easly and when you damarage for start up some smoke will puff of from air hole.
Sooo whats the point in injecting oil in the combustion chamber and cranking to lube the (cyl walls) but if it sits for several months if not half a yr (canada) n if stored in garage or outside the oil will just sit on the bottom anyways. Altho ppl might say due to oil film. However there should be film anyways since it has been running prior to service....but thats just me
Two things I would do different: Change the oil in the spring, not before you put it away for the winter. Used oil has much better lubrication properties than cold/new oil. Change it when it is warm and when you are about to use it. Also, when trying to evacuate the gasoline... replacing the cap on the fuel line while is running would put suction on the carb. This usually prevents all of the fuel from burning out of the chamber.
You change oil in autumn because old oil can be acidic and can promote corrosion in presence of humidity in winter storage. Old oil can contain water/fuel.
