@@FloBass that is true i forgot about that. My transom is a few inches longer in height. Look into getting a jack plate which I Highly would recommend. I really want to make sure you get the best out of your boat and outboard flawlessly.
i am going to start off with saying good luck with your captain license. i am a 100 ton QMED. generally speaking, you should hit rev limiter unloaded, but never loaded. adjust prop pitch accordingly (+/- 1 pitch) in your case. it seems like your boat could only accommodate 2 or 3 persons max. factor in the weight of the people and gear +(cooler of beer). all of the weight will mostly make its way toward the front which will make planing more difficult. if you did your speed test in fresh water you may want to go to salt on a calm day. you will gain some speed for bragging rights. saltwater is more dense and the boat floats higher. same way when we swim in it (easy to tread water). pitch the prop for how you will use it commercially and keep the prop now for recreational use. stainless props are nearly indestructible and have incredible wear resistance to bumping in to sand bars and such. however, they are heavy and send a shock wave to the gears in the lower unit when shifting gears.
This is impressive results. And the F25 is a compelling option if you're stuck deciding between a 20 and a 25 tiller, the Yamaha F25 is basically a strong 20 as it is a 2 cylinder design, it has less displacement (432cc) as the 3 cylinder brands (500cc) but more than the 20hp 2 cylinder options (>350cc). It is a true in between and offers the best combo of power and weight savings. I'd like to know what the fuel burn difference is compared to a Tohatsu 25 and see if having less displacement makes a difference (even though the Tohatsu is working less hard).
I just ran the testing with the 12 pitch prop vs. the stock 11 pitch on the DF25A. 3 mph faster top speed, the engine loves the prop. BUT - I noticed it takes more to get up on plane. The truth is I put the 11 back on because I prefer to have that perfect blend of hole shot and mid range beastly power and ease of on plane times and be satisfied with 27 mph top speed. I used a solas amita prop and I have a chirping or kind of squealing going on which drove me nuts, not sure why. I never had that happen with stock prop. I also noticed my motor mount bolts were loose, this may have been the cause of the noise. (22 hrs. total time on the boat and Motor). I will retest on the next nice day. I posted a video last night of the chirping noise. - Thanks, Jeff
Awesome info! I hit a gator yesterday morning and put a dent in my stock aluminum prop. I lost 1mph. I’m going to have to replace it. The thing surfaced 20 feet in front of the boat when I was cruising at half throttle which is 22mph. Nothing I could do. How heavy is your boat?
I’d go with the same pitch but a quality stainless one, this will load it just a tad so you don’t tag the limiter when it’s just you and still have enough holes shot when you have two bodies and gear. Keep the old prop and tools onboard, if you’re prepared you’ll never need it luck.
I have a 12ft Jon boat (tracker toadpole) with a 15hp 2stroke Yamaha, with me alone I’m getting 25-26mph. I’ve tested some different props available on Amazon and the stock 10 pitch gave me the best speed. I have lined the floor with wood and carpet but I think at most added 50lbs and I weight 220. Is that a good speed or is there anything I can do to give me more speed. I saw a guy with the same engine on a 14ft run 28mph. Engine has stabilizer tabs and I don’t know if it helps or hurts my speed. I’m wondering why my 12 won’t do 30mph. I’m thinking about up jetting my carb to get more fuel. Any thoughts? Any help is greatly appreciated!
Trim that motor up, when you gave the drone footage you could see the front of the boat had layed down on plane. Keep the bow up and you’ll add 3-5 mph. Not to mention it won’t prop wash as bad in reverse. I’m running 20 mph, 2 people, gear, 14-36 war eagle with a 9.9 Yamaha 4stroke. Running a 15hp carb & stainless prop
Yeah I wanted to put a 15hp carb on my 9.9, but I knew it wouldn't be enough especially with my baitwell. It already bangs the rev limiter even with another person in the boat along with a full well so I'm not sure if I'll get any more speed out of it, but I'll give it a shot.
*Trim it out as far as possible. All these imbeciles saying put weight up front have zero idea. You want just the prop in the water and the nose slightly raised, not ploughing through the water like it is. You will pick up 10 kmh in top end speed. You lot are clueless about getting the best performance out of a boat.💯%*
What pitch? Factory aluminum? I”d imagine you can go up in pitch and prob go to a stainless prop. Also that motor would be best paired with a slightly larger boat imo. Something like a 1648.

I love it.... I have a new 2019 Suzuki DF25A on my new 2019 smokercraft V14 and I am getting the same numbers. With my wife and 75 lbs.daughter and a full cooler for the day I am getting 27-28 every time. I have a stock 10 1/4 - 11 pitch prop. The thing is, I have the same speeds at 3/4 throttle as I do wide open, but there is always a big hit of thrust that snaps my head backwards when I hit the throttle no matter where it's at, but no more speed. I can't seem to figure it out....makes me think it can handle a 12 pitch. There is no limiter hitting, but I have that extra thrust all the way through the range even when the numbers stop. That 3rd cylinder really helps with torque, but our numbers seem to match with your Yamaha. My boat is a bit heavier, I believe it's at 185 lbs dry. I'm afraid to run stainless because there is no give when hitting shit in the water. I live in upstate NY Saratoga Springs and we only have the fresh water up here and it's got lots of tree and rock to look out for. Let me know if you think of it when you get a different prop, I'd love to know what you discover with it. Love the Yamaha, its sweet. I'm at 147 lbs dry with my electric start engine, and manual tilt doesn't bother me either, I just find the sweet spot and leave it there all day. I also have a 15 inch shaft motor and boat transom, it's a menace for many reasons.... Thanks man - Jeff
That smokecraft is a nice boat! The 3 cylinders will give you a great holeshot. Always was curious about those Suzuki's. The best thing to do is get a tachometer and note your rpm at full throttle and top speed and talk with a prop shop. You'll also need to know the weight of your boat as well. They'll be able to tell you if a prop with a different pitch will help or not.
1:07 ... it should depend on propeller and RPM. Put the yamaha propeller on the another motor with same RPM and check the speed again. Should be same like yamaha. 5:06 ... i.e. if your 10hp is able to give you 6000RPM then with the yamaha propeller it will give to you same speed 8:30 put some have weight on boat fwd to rise the end.
@@MountainManKm the Horse power is required to push against the water. If a hull is efficient and does not produce much drag force then you could have enough speed even from less strong motor if it has same propeller pitch and RPM. Because of that yamaha 2.5hp is twice faster vs competitors.
@@RUS_US I have a 15hp yamaha 2 stroke, I want to cut and weld my own exhuast, widen it, and make it bigger, mill the head just a tad, drill biggers jets and build a cold air intake for the carb, I know also depending on the height that you have the engine on the transom makes a difference and like you said your pitch and rake, I guess I just never thought about it like that. I mean I knew the hull shape mattered and I knew the prop did too, but ur right if the rpm is matched with a good hull and prop it can go just as fast. I still wouldnt believe it would be faster in acceleration.

Pull the plug at speed and all the water drains right off. Of course your running to heavy with that size motor with a 16" stern. Consider installing a couple of pods on the stern.
If there's no wind, or I'm moving with the current it hits the rev limiter if I keep it at wot. I'm assuming what you're hearing is the audio clipping due to the excessive wind noise at 30mph.
@@FloBass ok cool, so you're not getting a miss at all, just microphone noise from the wind. Thanks so much for posting these clips, you are inspiring us former I/O guys to go with outboards!
Weight distribution is the key to performance on a small Jon boat.Good luck on your captains license!Too bad you do not have the integrated live well in the center seat.
I've been looking at 1650's with the seat livewell, but only issue is I bait up with threadfin shad for clients, and they don't last in square wells. You need round edges and a circular flow of water. I'm hoping I can modify a 1650LW model with my well.
Definitely something to look at. I think I'm going to live with it for now. I'll be upgrading to a 1650 once this boat generates enough income to replace itself.
I’ve been saving for a new outboard all winter. I think you sold me on this one. It’s very close in price to the 20 Merc efi I was looking at, but way faster. How’s the back of your boat sit with the 25? I have a 9.9 Honda that weighs like ~117lbs so I reckon this would be about the same at ~126lbs. I have a 14’ v with a 52” transom, so slightly wider than your 1436. Concerned about weight cause I’m kinda fat lol
With a normal amount of gear I don't see you moving slower than 25mph. Definitely get one with an electric start though. Its only $300 more and worth every penny.
Is this a 1436 Jon? Did you have to reinforce the transom at all? I just got a 1436. Rated for 15hp... but I will be running my free 5hp 2-stroke for a while until I am done adding all the goodies like trolling motor and fish finder.... and am done building out the boat to the way I want it. Luckily, we have a billion boat ramps in my area... so I don't have to travel super far by main motor. It would be nice though... to be able to put in at the fresh water canal/river at both ends of my street... and cruise the 5 to 10 miles to salt from the end of my road. It would both keep the salt off of my trailer and rinse the boat and motor out on the way home.
If you put hydro foils on your cavitation plate it should get on plain I got a 9.9on a 14 ft v hull and I get 22 mph and also tried trimming up the motor then hydrofoils will allow you to do that which will save on gas and more weight in the bow also love your content man
Boat gets up on plane in 2 seconds so I don’t think a hydrofoil is needed. By myself I got 22mph with the 9.9. About 18 with me and the well full. But once you add another person or another 140lbs the 9.9 would only push 9mph. That’s just not sustainable for what I’m trying to do.
FloBass I understand you with that mine is the same but with a friend I get like 14 mph but its a lot according to the prop but congratulations on the new motors Yamaha are great engines
I wonder how does the trim angle affect the top speed on this boat? Neutral setting vs moving the column away from the transom to compensate bow going up when in max speed. I plan to do some tests and a vid when checking different angles on my small Honda F15 engine and a crescent boat :)
On this boat the trim angle made no difference in top speed. It rides on a very small pad. Even with a 9.9 it would ride on a small pad. It really needs a jack plate to raise the motor to go faster. Then you’d most likely need a prop with more pitch.
It's definitely a good speed for what I need it to do with passengers and the well. I wont take the boat faster than 25 when I have passengers. There are a lot of long runs I'll be making when I fish alone, so I will eventually get a prop with more pitch to bring the rpm down to a better operating range at wot. It will get better fuel efficiency dropping down 500 or so rpm too.
I had a $3,800 lb Sea Ray and the motor would push that boat at 36 same motor on an 1800 lb boat top speed the same 36 it depends on how the gearing is and the prop that you're using. If it's just you and the livewell you could go with a speed problem and get a lot more speed. If you're going to put two more people on the boat keep the torque prop
I can't imagine hitting a gator.....! My boat is 185 lbs. I ride with my wife and daughter, and 6 gallons of fuel and a small cooler. I'm thinking the squeak was due to loose mounting bolts and not the solas prop. I'll know soon when I retest. 11 pitch is where it's at for my set up.
I finished my boat build recently and fish the same area, and I agree about those jetskiers. you know you can get to lake Osborn to from lake ida through the canals and in between theres an awesome local boat ramp that hardly anyone uses. hit me up if you want to know, its even empty on Sundays.
They already do. They launch and race on that same stretch I started the vid in. On my way back to the ramp some dude on a ski wasn’t watching behind him when he started it up and I got blasted by his jet when the ski started up. Nothing can be done about them. No courtesy what so ever.
went out last night and when I got there I saw some kids with a few jet skis all trailered up and out of the water and they started them up and started to rev the engines. I started laughing and yelled keep reving, do it louder, knowing that they where frying the impellers.
Nice video, just to offer some experience, I have the same motor electric start. I run it on a 1548 semi v. Stock Yamaha prop is 9-7/8 dia by 11.25 pitch and would push me and my buddy total weight 525lbs and fishing gear 27-28 I now run a solas stainless 10pitch for pushing heavy loads it’s a slightly larger dia so it pulls harder down low and maneuvers the boat better at low speeds it will push 4 people and fishing gear 24-25 mph. My back up/ go fast prop is a turning point aluminum 9-3/8 by 11 pitch very close to the Yamaha prop at a 1/4 of the cost. If you want to chat sometime drop me a message good luck.
Here's a little trick I did back in the day when I lived in marathon, to get the most out of my 18 hp Johnson we would wax the bottom of the fiberglass boats we had plus weight distribution was critical to plane out fast. My boat was a 16 footer v hull and my friend Chuck's was a 14 foot homemade Boston whaler the we built. Buddy would they hual tail and air borne in 2 to 3 foot swells.
100% would have went faster, but the motor was never going to stay on this boat so no point in spending money on a prop that wouldn't push a heavier boat as fast.
Ah, I gotcha. Offset to one side of the well there is a big 6" pvc tube that runs top to bottom. The tube has slots cut in at the bottom for water to come in, but there is a floor built into the tube about an inch up from the bottom to create a separate chamber. There's a hole in the middle of that floor with a half inch tube running up almost to the top of the well. When the water pressure builds up the water is forced through the slots in the big pvc and up that small tube in the middle. That fills up the chamber inside the big pvc. There is a 350gph bilge bump in that chamber that pumps the water back into the main wells compartment through a hole along the side of the big pvc. It has a dannco venturi at the end which slows the flow of water and creates aeration. So as the bilge pumps the water out of the chamber, it causes a pressure difference and the water continually flows into the big pvc, up the small tube, showers down into the chamber. I have filter media in there that it showers down on to collect the scales, poop, and other junk from the bait fish I catch and anything thats left from the net that falls in. Sorry for the long explanation, but hope it helps.

Question for you about the captains licensing aspect. How did you log your sea time in order to be able to take the captains license test? Did you work aboard a vessel prior?
I logged my time aboard my own boats as well as mating on others. The USCG has a form to log the hours and if its on someone else's vessel there's a section for the vessel owner to fill out and sign.
I might play with the trim to push the front down, but it gets up on plane and flattens out so easily the bow lift really doesn't hinder the boat in any way.
*You need to trim the motor out as far as possible. You muricans have no idea. With just you in the boat, you only want to have the prop in the water and nose slightly raised. I guarantee you will pick up an extra 1Okmh top end speed. I can't stand watching people drive boats with no idea. So frustrating to watch.*

i am going to start off with saying good luck with your captain license. i am a 100 ton QMED. generally speaking, you should hit rev limiter unloaded, but never loaded. adjust prop pitch accordingly (+/- 1 pitch) in your case. it seems like your boat could only accommodate 2 or 3 persons max. factor in the weight of the people and gear +(cooler of beer). all of the weight will mostly make its way toward the front which will make planing more difficult. if you did your speed test in fresh water you may want to go to salt on a calm day. you will gain some speed for bragging rights. saltwater is more dense and the boat floats higher. same way when we swim in it (easy to tread water). pitch the prop for how you will use it commercially and keep the prop now for recreational use. stainless props are nearly indestructible and have incredible wear resistance to bumping in to sand bars and such. however, they are heavy and send a shock wave to the gears in the lower unit when shifting gears.
Thanks for the info!
I have 1975 Loweline 14’ V-hull with heavy rubber floor mats, gas tank, anchor, and new 20 hp Mercury 4 stroke EFI. Top speed is 25-26 mph.
Im glad you said something I was wondering if a 25 was too much for my loweline 14ft I get 16mph with a Yamaha 8hp
That’s flying , man !!!
That thing scoots! I need to make a video on my 50hp 16ft jon now
Do it and make sure you tag me so I can see!
What pitch? Factory aluminum? I”d imagine you can go up in pitch and prob go to a stainless prop. Also that motor would be best paired with a slightly larger boat imo. Something like a 1648.
Definitely need a bigger boat. I have to run at least a dozen guide trips out of this before I can purchase a bigger boat. Or if Xpress wants to hook me up, I guess I can settle for one now... 😆
Those drone shots are nice. Debating between a 15 hp or a 20 but this video makes me want to go for the 20.
My old German metal smithing teacher use to say, "Always use the biggest hammer to finish the work".
Holy Moly. 25HP seems like a lot for a 14foot aluminum hull, I wonder what it's rated for?
It's super stable.
If it's not held together with rivets then he could do a thirty.
For 14' this boat looks really narrow.
1436?
I had a 14/48 welded with electric start and w/battery and full tank of gas would do 28mph.

5:06 ... i.e. if your 10hp is able to give you 6000RPM then with the yamaha propeller it will give to you same speed
8:30 put some have weight on boat fwd to rise the end.
Check this calculator: depending on prop pitch it will give you a speed www.csgnetwork.com/marinepropcalc.html
so you are saying a 10hp could go as fast as 25hp?
With this 1436 and a small amount of tackle I was able to go 22mph with a 9.9hp. Obviously more gear and/or another person you go slower.
I still wouldnt believe it would be faster in acceleration.
very good video a question how big is your boat
My brother had an old Main V hull fishing boat with the wooden ribs. That was about 14 foot. He had if I remember correctly, a 25hp Evinrude outboard motor on it. Man you wanna talk about FAST AS HELL AND NIMBLE 😗🎵🎶 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Hi,I just joined. Eric how wide is your boat in the bottom if you don't mind my asking
The bottom is only 3 feet wide. It’s pretty narrow. I’m picking up something a little bigger tomorrow and will have a video posted by Sunday.
@@FloBass thank you, just checking the stability some. My grandson and I have a 12' with a 6 hp on it for the French Broad River. Sorry to say but I live near Bass Pro in Tn.
Add a jack plate raise it up and push it back a hair and it will stop some of the prop wash and raise your top speed a little
Excuse me , do you know the weight of this jonboat ? And the dimension please ??? Thanks for the video , very nice
Its a 1436. Probably around 150lbs with nothing in it.
Pull the plug at speed and all the water drains right off. Of course your running to heavy with that size motor with a 16" stern. Consider installing a couple of pods on the stern.
My clumsy ass will not be pulling the plug out any time the boat is in the water.
Am I mistaken or does that engine sound like it has an occasional miss? or is that caused by hitting the rev limiter?
If there's no wind, or I'm moving with the current it hits the rev limiter if I keep it at wot. I'm assuming what you're hearing is the audio clipping due to the excessive wind noise at 30mph.
@@FloBass ok cool, so you're not getting a miss at all, just microphone noise from the wind. Thanks so much for posting these clips, you are inspiring us former I/O guys to go with outboards!
Nice and Congratulations 🎉

You convinced me to buy the Yammi 25hp. What brand is your 26 gallon live well?

Thank you so much. Just saw them on u tube. Will probably be ordering one soon
Not bad, my 16ft jon boat with a 1989 Johnson 30 hits 33 with just me in it
No one asked
You got VRO or regular fuel pump I got a 99 Johnson 70 vro is giving me problems
I'd get some beaver tail float pods for the back little more flotation keeps the back end higher no prop wash
Yes, I plated the transom and floor, and used a 2x4 section of aluminum to brace between the two.

You have a video on that? I will dig for it if you do...

FloBass I understand you with that mine is the same but with a friend I get like 14 mph but its a lot according to the prop but congratulations on the new motors Yamaha are great engines
bro just wanna ask u.. what's the type of ur boat?i like it.. really. 👍👍

What are the specs on the boat? Manufacturer, type width, length? Trans hight? Side height? Gage material?

Hi we have the same motor where did you get the tach hour meter from
Amazon. If you leave your boat outside, don't get the one I got.
FloBass what would you recommend if outside?
I've got the same engine on my 11 ft Whaler and get a bit over 30 MPH out of it...great engine.
You got a cool boat it's fast too
I wonder how does the trim angle affect the top speed on this boat? Neutral setting vs moving the column away from the transom to compensate bow going up when in max speed. I plan to do some tests and a vid when checking different angles on my small Honda F15 engine and a crescent boat :)
On this boat the trim angle made no difference in top speed. It rides on a very small pad. Even with a 9.9 it would ride on a small pad. It really needs a jack plate to raise the motor to go faster. Then you’d most likely need a prop with more pitch.
Jack plate would help him out more prob but would be minimal if he is running out of rpm already
Looks great from here!
allways wanted to do something like this. 30mph feels fast in a boat like that haha :D but did you do anything to enforce the transom?
My transom was warped, so I had a new one fabricated out of aluminum. You can see a brief shot of it in the unboxing video of this motor.
Nice drone video!!!
Fast enough . I'd be happy with that
It's definitely a good speed for what I need it to do with passengers and the well. I wont take the boat faster than 25 when I have passengers. There are a lot of long runs I'll be making when I fish alone, so I will eventually get a prop with more pitch to bring the rpm down to a better operating range at wot. It will get better fuel efficiency dropping down 500 or so rpm too.
Little yamadog id a beast. Good choice.
Definitely a fan. Every Yamaha bike or engine I’ve known has ran flawless and been incredibly reliable.
Make a riser for gunnell out of some lexan. Will help / stop the back wash.

I had a $3,800 lb Sea Ray and the motor would push that boat at 36 same motor on an 1800 lb boat top speed the same 36 it depends on how the gearing is and the prop that you're using. If it's just you and the livewell you could go with a speed problem and get a lot more speed.

I want this motor, I wish you would have tried it with a 12 pitch prop, I'm thinking it would go even faster because it might have enough hp.
100% would have went faster, but the motor was never going to stay on this boat so no point in spending money on a prop that wouldn't push a heavier boat as fast.
New subscriber, I really like the video. Not sure if you did this, but did you do an install video of the live well in your Jon boat?
Thanks Paul! The livewell is just screwed down to the floor and connected to battery terminals. Nothing fancy.
FloBass Gotcha. When I saw the well in the boat, I was curious how the recirculation pump was plumbed. Great video nonetheless.
How did you mount the transducer to your transom? I have the same boat.
I run a clamp on bracket on the transom so I can remove it when I'm running. Didn't want to drill holes in the boat.

@@FloBass ok cool, didn’t realize you could log your own hours without a licensed captain signing off on them.
