This video JUST SAVED ME tonight! Thank you thank you thank you for making this! I did everything step by step, even ordered the replacement drain motor from Amazon. Took out the drain motor, and on the paper towel, I found a shard of glass. The glass was jamming the drain motor and creating a clicking sound. This video was FANTASTIC! I should have a draining dishwasher now thanks to you!
Good job way to go thanks for watching
Great teacher. Step by step and very clear! Thank you Tom!
You’re welcome it’s not too hard and you can do it yourself save some money thanks for watching
Now this is how the video is done. Slow pace, to the point and covers everything.
Thanks and thanks for watching
sir my dishwasher same company. Every time 2 hours 30 minutes setting time. I want only 30 minutes settings for dishwasher. please sir one video for time setting. thanks
@@TomLeeman I like the summary at the start then the breakdown
I have the same dishwasher and just ordered a drain pump. I was able to diagnose and fix my dryer also watching these type of videos. Thank you for a really informative video!
You’re welcome and thanks for watching
Thanks man, it is almost impossible to track anything down these days that we all once took so for granted. Your video was very helpful, gravely appreciated, keep up the VIDEOS
Glad I could help good luck on your install and thanks for watching
Followed your instructions as I had the same situation. Changed out the drain pump and today I have a working dishwasher. Thanks for the video, saved me a probable expensive house call.
Yeah, I think they want like 300 bucks just to come out and then charge you big money for the part when you can buy it on Amazon cheap
Best video I have found to replace the pump without having to pull the dishwasher out. Super easy. Thank you!
Glad to hear it it took me a while to figure out how this thing came off and I knew if I was having a hard time everybody else was going to be having a hard time good to hear you got it fixed thanks for watching
Thanks for not burying the lede or rambling for five minutes at the beginning. Excellent in-depth follow on. I wish every repair video followed your example!
Thanks I appreciate the kind words I try to get to the point thanks for watching
Thank you so much for posting this! Excellent video and very informative. If the CLR cycle I'm running right now doesn't work, I think this is the next step. Super helpful. Thanks again, brother! 🤙🏼👍🏼
You're welcome! good luck and thank u for watching
I love how excited you are at the end!! When you fix your own stuff, it’s always so rewarding. VICTORY!!

Tom: thanks for your video. My 4 year-old Kenmore stopped draining. Watched your video and had Sears come out, Sears guy looks at it (does not do anything) and tells me I need at new Pump $388 installed. How about the Drain line? Need a new Pump. Said good/bye to Sears. Called out SET Appliance Service and this guy Listened to me (You) and found the Drain Line completely Blocked. Cleaned that out, Good as New!! Thanks to you Tom & "SET".
You are welcome glad you got your dishwasher working and thank you for watching the video
Hey man. Well, my clog was in the hose from the dishwasher to the drain. I removed it, filled it with warm soapy water, shook it around. Then I had to use my fiberglass "fish rods" to push out a big blockage. Rinsed it out & I was up & running, no parts needed!
Great job you saved yourself a lot of money I always say try to do it yourself. Thank you for watching. And thanks for the tip.
I agree with the poster, however there is another means of fixing. If you go to "cancel drain" and all you hear is a very short run of the motor. The fix is easy and could save you a lot of money.
First remove the lower covers of the unit in order to access the working parts
Next, unplug the unit from power.
Next, look at the underneath side of the enclosure where you will find a small (2" diameter) sensor with two push-on leads and a rubber tube that delivers pressure. This unit is attached to the underside of the cleaning enclosure by a square-block receiver.
Remove by rotating it approx 90 degrees.
Next, rotate the sensor to where it is released from the square receiver hole in which it was installed. Remove rubber tube and the two electrical connectors. Take the small unit in hand and proceed to the next step.
Next, get out your volt/ohmmeter and attach to the two terminals. It should read zero
Next, BLOW on the extruding tube that was attached to the rubber tube that was connected to the pump area. It should read below 10 ohms. It will probably read 70-250 ohms as it is worn out and the microswitch inside has crystalized or arced. No worries...proceed to the next step
Next, Clear out the red sealing glue from the LOWER hole and using a small screwdriver, adjust to where you have minimum ohms resistance. No more than a 1/2 turn in most cases.
Next, reinstall and hopefully enjoy the unit working properly.
I think you must be an engineer because that was a lot of information. Thanks for all the good tips and thanks for watching.
My friend changed my garbage disposal yesterday, the prior one had leaks on the bottom, we wanted to test the dishwasher to make sure there were no leaks, bought my condo a year ago, never had any issues with the dishwasher, tried for ghe first time ever the "short rinse"....the water didn't drain. Any chance the issue is because i used that cycle or probably just a coincidence?
There is a plug on the side where the water comes from the dishwasher into the garbage disposal. If he did not remove that it would stop the water from draining so that may be the problem. They have that plug there for people who do not have dishwashers so when you install it, you have to open that plug up so that the water can flow through the garbage disposal and out the drain. Good luck. Thanks for watching.
Great video...very easy to understand, well captured on video too for such a tight space! We'll be following these steps to fix ours! Thanks again!
Good luck on your install save money do it yourself thanks for watching
Bottle brush would be good to clean that drain hose.
Excellent tip
@@TomLeeman
If you don't mind, do you happen to know how to check a check valve in a dishwasher drain assembly? I'm unsure if I need to replace the drain pump or if the condition is just a check valve
Great video. Better man. You should have been a teacher. Impressive. Thank you.
Glad I could help. Enjoy your Kenmore dishwasher.
Could you please tell me what the part behind the pump is? At 12:18 in your video it is in focus on the left side of the screen. Thanks for any help you may have.
I believe it’s a certain type of housing, but I’m not quite sure
Thanks for that. Plugged connection to drain! Sorted! Why didn't I check this out sooner!!! : )
Glad it could help. Glad you got your dishwasher working thanks for watching.
I’m tired of trying to fix mine also! I worked on checked the impeller, also replaced the pump motor and they work but still no draining…
Sounds like it’s time for a new dishwasher. Sorry to hear that but thank you for watching.
I think that is a counter not a pump for detecting drain flow. It looks like it is on the drain on the next device that seems to be inline with what I rthink is the drain pump
I’m not sure about the semantics or the names but this is the thing that I had to fix. Good luck with yours and thank you for watching.
Run 30% vinegar through several wash cycles. One cup in basin and another upright on bottom tray.
Great tip!
Thanks for making this video. My kenmore elite would stop halfway through the cycle with the oversudsing alert. I hadn't put any extra detergent or the wrong detergent in. Then after the suds dissipated, there was a few inches of water remaining. So I followed your instructions. My filter wasn't clogged, the outflow wasn't blocked. So therefore I'm hoping it's number 3: replacement of the pump motor. Just ordered a new pump motor. Keeping fingers crossed. Thanks, because you've put me the closest to actually solving this issue :)
Good luck and thanks for watching
I can turn the rotary knob to a certain point after the low wash setting and the washer will drain, but if I run it normally, it will not. does that mean that the control board or rotary switch is bad? It doesn't seem to be clogged.
I’m not quite sure I would have to do some research on them but sometimes you have a bad motherboard for the computer in the machine but that’s a little bit past my expertise. Sorry but thank you for watching.
Dude I just wanna give credit where credit is due. Your video just helped me solve a clog due to a piece of broken glass that broke a while ago. We must’ve missed a small piece and it was blocking the impeller from spinning. I heard it drop out after turning the motor counter clockwise to get it off. So without your video I wouldn’t have known how to get it off. Thank you sir. Much appreciated
You are welcome glad that you got your dishwasher working and you saved money by doing it yourself. Thanks for watching.
Thanks.!!!!!!!!!!.. (removed motor) and got it fixed. now drains and no more front leaks. (overfill).👍👍👍👍
Excellent do it yourself save your money and fix it the right way enjoy your new fixed dishwasher thanks for watching
How much water indicates there’s a problem? I have that small amount of water like you had in the intro section around the little filter.
Could have a clog line or need to check the fan blades for obstructions
So the clogged hose wasn’t the problem? You still needed a new pump?
Yeah, I had to put in a new pump, but the hose was clogged too so I had to clean that out. Good luck on yours. Thanks for watching.
You are the man, thank you so much. I wish you lived in Bismarck ND
Maybe one day!
Dude!!!!! You are awesome!!!. I took the motor out and found something stuck in the fins. The fins are kind of chewed up, but i put it back in and it works. Its such an easy repair that im just going to wait for it to fail instead of replacing it. Thank you!!
You are welcome do it yourself save money
Very thorough explanations! Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! Good luck on your install and fixing your dishwasher and thanks for watching
Seems a bottle brush would do the trick for cleaning out the hose. . .
Great idea happy new year
Thanks, exactly what I needed! Took my motor off and found a huge piece of glass in there. Cleaned it up, worked like a charm. Really appreciate it.
Glad to hear it thanks for watching
Thank you!! I just fixed ours all by myself
Way to go save money if you call a guy out they charge you like 400 bucks to put in a $30 part. It’s so crazy but I’m glad to hear you got it done and thank you for watching.
I would have to do some research on that as I am basically a novice I do thanks for the first time
That’s how to do it. Awesome video. Thank you so very much. 🎉
You're welcome! Glad I could help. Enjoy your dishwasher.
Nice video. Waiting on my new pump now. Thanks.
You can do it! Thanks for watching

Thanks for the awesome video you really explained yourself really well about taking the pump off I found a piece of glass in the pump I hope that will be the problem. Thanks again....

Your video is AMAZING and helped us fix our dishwasher without making a service call. Well done and easy instructions to follow. We found a small piece of plastic was stuck in the area where the drain is for the motor. Thank you!
Glad that I could help now you can have clean dishes
Great video with instructions, clarity, and excellent visuals and close ups. Thank you for the time in putting this together.
You're very welcome!
Thanks a lot Mister
Have a good day :)
You are welcome thank you for watching
One of the best informational videos on youtube. Thank you sir!
Glad I could help it’s kind of a tight spot down there thanks for watching
Did you even test if the old drain pump was working? You skipped that step in the video. Usually, the first thing I do is partially clear the restriction, then use the drain pump to clean it out further. The real reason it gets clogged, is because you don't use the dishwasher often enough.
We probably use it once a week
How do you “kinda” pull the hose off?
Lol
I did all these and it's still not draining. :-(
You may have a clogged drain line and have to replace that hose good luck thanks for watching
do you have a link to where you got the motor?
I bought it on Amazon. I think I put the link in the details of the video. amzn.to/4754eNw
Was your old motor still humming?
No it’s pretty quiet actually you can hear the sound of the dishes being washed in the water but besides that it’s pretty quiet thanks for watching
Great video on troubleshooting! Ran into this same exact issue but I would add one more step to check to ensure the pump is the issue: After removing the pump, go ahead and plug the power cable back in and press the Cancel/Drain button on the dishwasher. It so happened that the pump was indeed running fine, I just had a frozen water line as it ran against an exterior wall in my house and it can get quite cold behind your casework.
I saw that you guys were getting a polar vortex up there I think in Chicago it was a -10°. Stay warm. Glad to hear that you got your machine working and thanks for watching.
I rarely use the dishwasher. A few months ago, my Garbage Disposal stopped working, so I bought a new one and replaced it. No problem. Two days ago, we used our dishwasher and found the water was not drained at the end. Tried a couple of times, same results. Then I found this video instruction. As demonstrated, step by step, I took out the filter and cleaned it. Then took out the tube connecting to the disposal, with no obvious debris plugging the tube. I remember that in the video, Tom inserts the screwdriver into the dispenser from the connecting side, and you can see it from the top of the sink. I tried to stick my finger to the connecting side and was blocked. Well, I thought it was a special design of this new disposal that prevents backflow to the dishwasher, so I took the disposal out, set the connecting tube side upward, filled it with water, and found no flow!!! Then I drill it through that plastic part that blocked the flow from the dishwasher to the garbage disposal. After putting everything back, my dishwasher works again! Thanks Tom. The one disposal I bought is Badger 500-3 Standard Series.
Excellent glad to hear you had a good install. All garbage disposals have that outflow blocked. It comes from the dishwasher just in case you don’t have a dishwasher so you have to remove that so that the water will flow through. Sounds like you got everything working good thanks for watching.
Great video! Very easy to follow
Thank you and good luck on your install. Thank you for watching.
This video was helpful to help me diagnose my slightly different problem. My kids do the dishes and my soon dumped a giant pan of leftover rice into the sink and did NOT run the garbage disposal. So the rice was sitting in the garbage disposal and blocking the intake from the dishwasher. I changed the dishwasher filter and pulled the connecting hose from under the sink. I noticed a tiny bit of water drain out. It was suspicious that it was draining out so slow and long. It made me check and sure enough, filled with rice. All I had to do was reconnect the hose, run the garbage disposal blades for a second and then hit the drain button on the washer .. problem solved.
Glad to hear that you got her fixed and got that rice out of there. Thanks for watching.
Saved me hundreds of dollars!!!! I changed the drain pump without issue . Thanks so much
U R welcome and thanks for watching!
Thanks, I am sure the video was a pain to get. You did a good job! Also, I believe there is a thermal switch in the motor that trips that keeps water from draining if the motor gets too hot.
Thanks for the tips and thanks for watching
Thanks good luck on your install
Tom, thank you for the excellent video. Pump on my dishwasher yesterday stopped draining water and it was not even attempting to pump, I could not hear any sound when it was supposed to engage. When I tried to remove power connector on the pump I realized that it was lose - not plugged in. Once I securely plugged connector in and reconnected power, dishwasher was able to drain water!
Great to hear! Glad you got everything working. Do it yourself save money thanks for watching.
I’ll change the water pump, check the drain hose and made sure that the hose was not bend, check on the connection to the sink, but; the machine does not drain, so I check the little plug that is connected to the pump, and nothing. Anyone can tell me what should I do next?
Make sure that the plug in your garbage disposal has been opened up or you connect the outflow
@@TomLeeman I did, I installed the new pump but it does not drain. Open the front panel to check on the computer, after removing the plastic cover I found a nest of small roaches (a constant plague here on Houston). I clean all the dead roaches and killed the remain roaches, it was a lot, I had to sweep them from the floor. Clean everything good and put poison around the computer to prevent future nest of roaches. Found something, while checking the multiple cables that are connected to the computer I notice that one of the contacts is brown, kind of the color of an electric short. I put the tester and check for continuity on both ends and it seems working, but I remain suspicious because the machine still does not drain the water. I dont know I might have to find a use computer and replace it. Thank you for your reply.
@@jorgehidalgo4792 you may need a new motherboard. Good luck and again thanks for watching.
@@TomLeeman that’s what I was thinking. Thank you
Thank you thank you! I thought my pump was out. I cleaned filter and no luck, but someone had put an extension unnecessarily on the DW drain hose years ago and it was completely clogged. I didn't need it anyway so now I'm hooked up directly and it works fine. You saved me hundreds of dollars!!
Glad I could help do it yourself save money
Just cleaned a couple hoses but only one was dirty but didn't look dirty enough to stop the drain. Reassembling. Hope it works. Our old pump looks ok like your new one looks. It seem ok. Hmmm. Praying it works.
good luck!
I have the same Kenmore Dish washer. How much was your pump?!?! 0:02
It was like 50 bucks
Thank you
Ok! I replaced the pump. Still not draining. Any other suggestions
Thank you so much for your video. The tube connecting the disposal to the dishwasher was totally clogged. I just cleaned it out and the dishwasher was up and running in under 30 minutes. Thanks!
Excellent job do it yourself and save money thanks for watching
Hey Tom I just wanted to say thanks. Your video was the right one for my amana dishwasher. I cleaned out food from the filter then I detached the hose from the dishwasher leading to the garbage disposal and stuck a metal hanger in it and that loosed the food and then I ran hot water down the pipe until it was clear. Connected everything back and ran the dishwasher without any problems thanks so much. No puddle at the bottom of the inside of washer. Nor on the ground afterwards. Cyas.
Excellent job do it yourself save money
This video helped me out on this Christmas Day 2022
I found that by cleaning out the hose and getting all the crap out of there It fixed the problem I didn't have to buy a new drain pump the old one worked just fine. Once I cleaned the hose out I put hot water in the bottom of the filter area and turned on the machine and let it drain out into a pot. I think you failed to follow through on the step to check out the pump motor before you replaced it if you did you probably have saved money. But never the less it was a great video and saved me time and money ..Thank you so much for showing us how to repair stuff
Glad you enjoyed it and fix your machine
Yes it worked !!! I pulled the impeller to pop in a new one and out fell a piece of glass ! I had the new impeller now ($60) and with a 10 year old washer figured it might as well put the new impeller in - THAnK YOU !!!
I know it’s not too hard once you see how to do it and you just saved yourself probably 500 bucks or some people might’ve bought a brand new dishwasher cost more and then you get install it Congratulations and thanks for watching
Hi Tom thanks so much watching your video was like going to repair school only it was enjoyable, my dishwasher is now up and running. Very easy to understand instructions thanks again Dale
I am glad that I could help it’s very frustrating when your appliances don’t work properly but usually you can figure it out and fix it that’s what I try to do thanks for watching
But I have a Samsung !!!!
Somewhere under that Samsung you’re gonna find the same type of pump and that’s probably where your problems going to be you can search Samsung dishwasher and I’m sure there’s a video on it I have not done one yet good luck thanks for watching
I also found a piece of glass in the pump out sump the hard way. Wasn't a piece of glass at all but a piece of Corell ware. Sharp as hell and multiple finger lacerations. Pump impeller vanes were ground down to noting.
Wow I guess that stuff can do damage good luck thanks for watching
outstanding Sir!
I appreciate the kind words thank you and good luck 👍
Thank you so much for this video! I was able to fix our dishwasher by installing a new pump as you instructed, and it is working great now!

Great video! Checked everything as you have shown. It seems like my pump motor is also bad. Do you happen to know the drain pump part number? Thanks again for the video.
Actually I bought this on Amazon and I looked for one that was similar and just took a chance and bought it and had and it was the right one I liked out thanks for watching
Great video. Clear and easy to understand. Replaced the pump in less than 10 minutes and ol' washy is draining like a champ. 🙏

Thanks it was tough getting underneath that washing machine Good luck on your install thanks for watching
I followed your demonstration which is spot on. What I found was a piece of broken glass in the pump fins.
Yep, that’s what usually is some type of broken glass gets caught in there
Great video. After reviewing my filter (different from yours) didn't appear to be clogged, I found the "Cancel" button also functions as a "Drain". I closed the door and pressed it. The remaining water was pumped out without issue so there aren't any clogs and the pump was fine. Just sure why it didn't drain as it usually does. Nonetheless, I think (and hope) I'm good for now.... Thank you.
Thanks for the info! Glad to hear you got it working and thank you for watching
I'm thinking that this is what I need to do for my dishwasher to drain again. I have a feeling there's some glass that's blocking it from draining. I want to remove the pump motor but cannot find the plug to unplug the dishwasher!! Don't want to get electrocuted. It's not located under the sink like yours, could it be possible that it's behind the dishwasher? Would I have to pull the dishwasher out? Help!!!
It’s usually under the sink in the same spot that you plug in your garbage disposal if not you may have to pour out the dishwasher good luck thanks for watching
@@TomLeeman Shut it off at the breaker panel

Thank you appreciate it. Good luck on your install.
Thank you. We are in the middle of repairing our dishwasher. I’m hoping that cleaning by the pump will be enough but may need to replace.

Great video. Easy to follow. But...one more thing to check before ordering a new pump. I found a chip of china keeping the impeller from spinning. Wished I'd look first because now I have to return a pump. Thanks for the clear video and instruction, though. Good job
Great tip!
Thank you Tom. I removed some hair wrapped around the impeller shaft but the motor still is not draining the dishwasher.
May have to get a new motor they’re not too expensive and you can buy them on Amazon good luck thanks for watching
Thanks so much for showing the tab on the motor and how it worked. I could not figure out how to remove it! (I had a broken blade and a piece of glass in mine.)
Yeah it’s tough because you can’t really see what you’re doing underneath the dishwasher and there’s that little tab that you’ve got to push but once you see it you got it all right thank you for watching
