  • Jim shares the three reasons why you have water at the bottom of your dishwasher, either after a wash or at any time. He shares an easy way to identify the cause of your dishwasher not draining and how to fix it yourself.
    Save yourself some money with these plumbing tips from Jim.
    Why is there water left in the bottom of my dishwasher? Here are the reasons why from the Grumpy Plumber:
    1. dishwasher hose is installed at the bottom of your cabinet, causing sink water to fill your dishwasher
    2. an air gap (not recommended) valve is attached to your sink, from the dishwasher hose, and is causing problems
    3. a check valve is installed on your dishwasher hose and is stuck open
    The simple fix is in the video.

    I love that you’re doing these “fix it yourself” videos. I’ve been a plumber for 15 years and did service plumbing for about 3 years. I always told customers to look the problem up on the internet or UA-cam. So many fixes are fairly simple. Hopefully this will help people and keep them from calling the Corp. commission plumbing companies.

    Can you please thank your dad for such a simple solution to an annoying problem.
    My dishwasher waste runs through the food disposal unit and the hose runs from there straight down towards the dishwasher. As there is slack in the hose I am going to raise it so the water from the basin can't flow uphill.
    Your dads advice is simply invaluable.
    Cheers!

    Great video! I fixed my "Dishwasher not draining" problem. When I popped off the cap for the Air Gap Valve, there was debris in there which consisted of egg shell, hair, garlic skin and a staple. I removed the debris, now the dishwasher is draining properly. Thank you for sharing your experience!

    Hi Jim and Jordan, why so grumpy? God bless your dad! Only a strong, experienced, expert can handle a big job like a plumber. I totally respect that. Ppl are iffy about the profession but I have a friend who’s father is a master plumber/business owner in NYS and they have no idea how much bank they make. I did a quick q/a with him becuz I was truly curious about the field and he said gets $900 minimum for his services. For 2-5 hours of work. Depending on the extensiveness of the job. Likely more. I asked how he gets through the muck he said he put 3 kids through private school, 2 of those kids through college bought all the kids cars and bought his properties outright. So what does that tell me. He was snarky too 😂.

    Our GE dishwasher does not. Completely drain. We have checked the drain hose and the connection to the sink drain as well as the filter. Is it possible the pump in the dishwasher is not working properly? It sounds like it pumps for a few seconds and then cuts off (does this a couple times) and then it cuts off and all the lights start flashing in the control and we have to flip the main switch to shut off the power to the dishwasher. After doing this a number of times the dishwasher will eventually drain all the water out but it doesn’t dry the dishes. Should we try replacing the pump?

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  Рік тому +1

      Marion Cutchen, if the dishwasher is over 5-10 years old, I would recommend replacing the dishwasher. I think it would be too costly to replace the pump. I have never replaced a pump or rebuilt a dishwasher. If you’re not doing the repairs yourself, find out the cost and then find out the cost to replace the dishwasher.

    So the water goes through the hose and to the disposal, but stops there. I have cleaned it and the hose is not clogged but there is a white wall like thing in the disposal where the hose attaches like 2 inches in ? Im not sure if that’s supposed to be a valve that maybe it’s not opening when draining?

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  12 днів тому +1

      Disconnect the hose. Insert a long screwdriver into the drain opening on the garage disposal to see if it’s clear. If the screwdriver doesn’t go all the way through, that’s your problem. Figure out how to remove the device. If it was a check valve, it usually does not come with the garbage disposal and was added. That’s why a recommend the loop in the drain. If there is no blockage, then you have a problem with the garbage disposal.

  • @thisistheway812
    @thisistheway812 7 місяців тому

    I have a new Bosch dishwasher. Hardly use it. When looking under sink, I noticed that the drain tube that connects to the disposal was full of water. The dishwasher drain reservoir is empty and the filters are nice and clean, but for some reason the tube keeps the water in it even after it flushes. I have reset the cycle and ran it through a manual drain cycle and I can see the water flowing into the disposal but then the tube is never emptied.
    Is it normal? If not what should I look for?

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  7 місяців тому

      If the drain hose is laying on the bottom of the cabinet, you need to take the extra hose and tie it up as high above the inlet to the garbage disposal as possible. That stops the water that drains into the kitchen drain from running back into the dishwasher. If that doesn’t fix the problem, then there is a problem with the dishwasher discharge water pump.

    • @thisistheway812
      @thisistheway812 7 місяців тому

      @@TheGrumpyPlumber I understand. Last question I have is will there be water in that tube between the discharge pump and where that line goes from vertical to horizontal? Is that tube empty immediately after the discharge pump on a normal drain cycle?

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  7 місяців тому

      If the hose is looped as I recommended then you won’t get water back into the dishwasher. The purpose in doing the hose this way is so that the water from the kitchen sink does not run back into the dishwasher.

  • @gloryB-3
    @gloryB-3 Рік тому

    I just want to know how the drain hose is suppose to be positioned from the dishwasher to the garbage disposal. Mine is now call connected to the near top of the garbage disposal under the sink cabinet (not the sink), then it loops downward, then upward (still under the sink), then after it goes upward it loops upward over the dividing wall to the dishwasher side, then goes downward to the bottom where it connects to the dishwasher.

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  Рік тому

      G. B. It sounds like you have it installed correctly. If you still have water in the dishwasher after it’s done recycling, you have a problem with the dishwasher. If over ten years old, replace it.

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  Рік тому

      @fredfloyd4430, the dishwasher hose connects to a branch tail piece. That branch tail piece should have a baffle in it. The baffle diverts the water down the drain and not into the sink. The branch tail piece costs about $5.00. If you already have a branch tail piece, then you should have your drain cleaned. Make sure you hire a plumber, not a person who just cleans drains.

    What if the hose isn't long enough to make (attach) a high loop? Can you get a longer one from a supplier?

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  3 роки тому +1

      Star Gazer, you can attach any hose as long as it has a 5/8 inside diameter. Take a 1/2” piece of copper and insert it into the new hose and the dishwasher hose and clamp it on both sides. Then loop it and attach to the garbage disposal. You might want to insert another piece of copper so the hose won’t collapse when attached to garbage disposal. You can also use a 3/4” inside diameter hose.

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  2 роки тому

      Arden Miller, install a 3/4” check valve on the drain hose where it connects to the sewer line. Or, take the drain hose and put a bend as high up as you can and then connect it back to the sewer line. You should be able to add on to the drain hose with 5/8 rubber hose. Sounds to me like the water is backing up from the main drain into the dishwasher. You can’t connect the dishwasher drain to the drain under the sink? That’s the best thing you could do.

      @@TheGrumpyPlumber Thank you for the advice I will try the check valve. The drain goes into the basement I think because whoever installed the cabinets put a 15" base cabinet between the sink cabinet and the dishwasher.

    I have tried all the suggestions. My Kenmore drains sometimes but not every time. BUT if I push the "Cancel/Drain" button it seems to always work. Does this mean it is the control panel?

      I have the same problem , and here is how i do it. Find the dishwasher drain line under the sink ( make sure you have a container to collect some water) , the last 2 ft for the line for me is a rapper hose. I unhooked the hose from the sink drain and then use a 1/4 auger to clean the line all the way back to dishwasher if you can using the auger. For me is about 9 ft from the sink to the dishwasher. Hope that helps.

    I wish you guys can have a visual. Son, since you are young, get under the sink and point out the things dad is taking about. He’s great!!!
