If you use it to make anything (gifsets etc.), we'd love to see them!
I’m guessing the reason Hugh Maynard delivers such a brilliant performance in this is because it probably hit quite hard to home. He himself was in and out of foster care until he was eight - his mother abandoned him and his father was negligent and he was so young when he was taken into care that he barely knew them, really, so playing a social worker-type character who genuinely cares about children probably felt quite personal to him, knowing what kind of things those children go through. He’s the only John I’ve ever seen, so I can’t say he’s the best, but he’s certainly wonderful!
It’s very rare that someone’s vocal abilities/talents/limitations and acting abilities/talents/limitations are both so incredibly well powerful that you see, feel, and hear all of the passion that person is capable of.
It’s a little overwhelming to experience, in the best way possible.
This is certainly an example of that.
Best. John. Ever.
have been lucky that when I saw it that he was my John went 2 times not that I missed my cast but I wanted to check out the new cast
What a passionate and powerful delivery of this song. This is truly a commanding performance. Thank you Mr. Maynard for sharing your extraordinary gift with us.
The original was good, but this is just extraordinary. This really conveyed the emotions and message of the song
His range is incredible.
Best song from this show, hands down
I never really paid attention to this song until i've heard it onstage. Goosebumps all over. It became my favorite.

They're called Bui-Doi
The Dust of life
Concieved in hell
And born is strife
They are the the living reminders
Of all the good we failed to do
We can't forget
Must not forget
That they are all
Our children too
Like all survivors, I once thought
When I'm home I won't give a damn
But now I know I'm caught
I'll never leave Vietnam
War isn't over when it ends
Some pictures never leave you mind
They are the faces of the children
The ones we left behind
They're called Bui-Doi
The dust of life
Concieved in hell
And born in strife
They are the living reminders
Of all the good we failed to do
We can't forget
Must not forget
That they are all
Our children too
These kids hit walls on every side
They don't belong in any place
Their secret they can't hide
Its printed on their face
I never thought I'd plead
For half-breeds from a land that's torn
But then I saw a camp for children
Whose crime was being born
They're called Bui-Doi
The dust of life
Concieved in hell
And born in strife
We owe them fathers, and a family -
And loving home they never knew
Because we know
Deep in our hearts
That they are all
Our children too
These are souls in need
They need us to give
Someone has to pay
For their chance to life
Help me try
They're called Bui-Doi
The dust of life
Concieved in hell
And born in strife
They are the living reminders
Of all the good we failed to do
That's why we know
Deep in our hearts
That they are all
Our children too
Amazing, but do audience really have to shout DURING the song? I'd so have loved to hear this performance undisrupted...
It's a festival, of course they're gonna cheer during the song.
Better than original, so far....
The performance was sensational but the audience reaction was - uh - "unfortunate." This is hardly a song that lends itself to cheers but rather to tears. The audience should have been weeping silently had they understood the meaning. Perhaps that's just my opinion but when I saw Miss Saigon on the stage, this song left me blubbering.
That’s the thing with crowds and audiences, they don’t respect the performance and only thinks of themselves! 😢
it is awesome, but still Peter Polycarpou for me!!!
Gaynor Jones agreed. His style is overacting (if there is a such a thing in singing). Peter polycarpous version is forceful and straightforward.its like he is really addressing the people his cause, unlike this version, which looks like he is performing in a church.
He sounds beautiful but in my opinion the end doesn't really fit the song. Even so his voice is amazing
