Wow...what a long search all over the world! And, finally, Kim was found in the Philippines in the name of Lea Salonga. In addition, a number of other Filipino musical/ stage artists. So very proud of our Filipino artists.

Watching this again after watching miss saigon manila 2024 last night april 28, 2024 at Solaire Theatre. First time i watched the play was 2000 at the Cultural center of the philippines with Lea Salonga Isay alvarez Monjque Wilson Leo Valdez and other Original westend filipino cast. The emotions, thrills and awe still the same and helicopter scene is still amazing. my fave play of all times! Love love love Missa saigon
This is when the world first learned about how AMAZING Filipina womens voices are thats why most if the Kims in major productions are filipina cause they SANGING
I wouldn’t say she is upperclass. There are far more girls in families that are really upperclass. But Lea is very, very intelligent. She graduated Valedictorian in high school and was taking a pre-medicine undergraduate in university when the audition for Miss Saigon came along.

What fascinated me about Miss Saigon is that actresses and actors I see from local Philippine TV shows and films (Pinky Amador in Encantadia 2005, Monique Wilson in Jose Rizal 1998 movie, Isay Alvarez and Robert Seña in Pulang Araw, add Janella Salvador who I’ve seen in some PH shows who is actually the daughter of OG cast Jenine Desiderio), an actor who has been in big International productions and has acted with Oscar winners and other big personalities (Jonathan Pryce who was in The Crown and has acted with the likes of Madonna, Emma Thompson, Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley) and other musical actors who has also been part of the original casts of other big famous musicals (Claire Moore who is the original alternate Christine Daae in Phantom of the Opera; then Jimmy Johnston, Keith Burns, and Peter Polycarpou who were all in the original ensemble cast of Les Misérables) are all in the same casts! Someone who did Encantadia and someone who did The Crown working together in one show, it’s just super unbelievable!
Wonderful players with ethnic diversity come & gathered together to perform a musical Broadway play. Enjoyed watching the making of Miss Saigon. Marvelous production!
@@aspencolorado4751 Thank you! I'm almost finished and came to the credits to see if anyone was talking about the ridiculous fast vibrato everyone is using. I thought it was a Philipine preference, until they did the preview and the american actor playing the love interest had the same fast vibrato! Slowing it down now haha...
14:21 Jon Jon at the desk, went to make a career out of miss saigon. Played the engineer in the 2014 revival. He was cast in the 1989 ensemble, because of his work in the auditions

This video is a speeded up version of the documentary. However, even then, vibrato was a very essential element to professional singing. Some of them had unnatural fast pitch fluctuating voices but it worked for the time era. Singers like Edith Piaf had very rapid vibratos. Lea's here, was very even since it was produced by proper air pressure. Wobbly voices though, were existent too - like Operatic Music's Maria Callas. You've noticed something that is absolutely important - the evolution of singing. Back then, legato lines and vibrato were what's important and now, belts and high notes are taking the cake.
@@HelloWorld-ev9sg Well, it really is not fair to compare classically trained vocalists to the new stream of "belters". They have their own weaknesses and strengths regardless. What makes the crowds more drawn to belting nowadays is that sense of excitement that the sound typically carries, especially when it's done in an efficient fashion.
And a small Island of the Philippines answered their prayers and the rest is history. I immigrated in Boston 1993 and saw Miss Saigon banner on The Wang Center.
You knew the moment she sang “you are” they got her. And that was solidified when she sang “movie in my mind”
"Sun and Moon" 🙂
It's sun and moon
U will see in the faces of the Bosses the satisfaction of hearing Lea's angelic voice🤗
cant get enough...i loved how they found Leah🤗
I love Lea Salonga. She is blessed with beauty, brains and aa amazing sweet voice.

The Repertory of Philippines is one of the best in the world ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I really admire Leah!
I was in tears watching this. So proud of The one and only Lea Salonga other Filipinos in the casts. 🇵🇭❤️
She's obviously been raised in an upper class environment. So talented, intelligent, confident, poised and elegant.

She's is Genius ❤️
she's also theatrically trained at a very early age. She has been annie in a local (philippines) theater production. she grew up in theater basically.
You forgot in real life she’s really rude and arrogant

I wish i had the chance back then to see the original production of Miss Saigon with Miss Lea Salonga and Miss Monique Wilson. Truly a gem

But the most important time stamp is 16:30 .. the moment THE great Lea Salonga appeared for her audition. And the rest was history!
Im so glad you found HER.
Lea was just so perfect to be Kim.
this is one case, where being an over-achiever (lea putting on a British accent when she auditioned) worked...
Change the Playback speed to x0.85

when lea audition they know already whos the leading actress..
Wtf, watching this shirtless is a bad idea.. Even the hairs on my back are standing

Not the most PC musical in this day and age.

Before we start, could you sign our contract😂
Correct me if i'm wrong. Is this the show that put Filipino musical actors and actresses in the world map?
Yes. Half of the cast was from Manila.

Si Lea talaga ang bagay na bagay sa Miss Saigon wala ng iba.
The girl youre looking for is Lea Salonga .
Lungs of steel 😍

Lea looks like she’s 12
Why does Jonathan Pryce play so many "bad guy" roles? Living vicariously?
She’s wonderful. However in this video her vibrato is way too fast.
The video was a little bit faster. Try to watch the original one.
Lots of pressure being an actor/actress, Lea Salonga and Jonathan Pryce are truly lifted. They are both actually very humble.
The guy at 49:20 needs to take a chill pill.
if only Simon's shouting Kim has a sound. :(
