I'm Hayden Hillier-Smith, on this channel I will break down what makes good editing...pulling back the curtain on how editors make the choices to keep YOU, THE AUDIENCE engaged. This includes showcasing the creative choices I have made.
And exploring the editorial process for other UA-cam channels in how they have optimised their content. I’m even going to take you through my journey where I experiment on how I can become a better editor and learn through my experiences.
Whatever it is that I do on this channel, I hope you can learn something and discover your own ability on being a content creator yourself.

Your content is worth a million paid courses, I appreciate your videos Hayden!
Don’t give him any ideas 😭
You’re as good of a teacher as you are an editor. You’re on the verge of something big here. This is best in class content on the subject matter. Not sure if you should be giving this away for free.
he isnt - he gets paid per view. lol.
in fact - he probably makes more just from ad-time alone than he would selling these as courses on some other unknown platform like skillshare or whatever
I love how you touched on how impactful colour grading is when it’s done right. A lot of the time the focus is on storytelling and constructing a story, so adding those little extra details like how you’re using colour grading to help tell the story and introduce a certain feeling are 👌🏻👌🏻
Yo Lila - See we follow the same YT! Great minds...
I love this guy too Lila!!!
@@BibleProphecyMadeClear think alike!
@@JimboTMX haha yessss
I love that there's another channel to nerd out about the editing of UA-cam videos. This channel is like "This Guy Edits" for UA-camrs.
I just sent an email application!
I adore This Guy Edits. I'm so glad you watch him, too!
I too watch both of these guys 😀
@@HillierSmith Where Do You Get Your Action Music From?
I would honestly watch 5 hours of HHS just editing a video and explaining each cut and movement he makes
I’m impressed with how well you executed this edit. Not that I expect any differently from you, lol. I really appreciate the peek behind the curtain where you show how you’ve basically ‘manipulated’ the storyline to make it a far more engaging, interesting and cohesive story/video than if you just edited it chronologically. Like how you cut out 95% of that one interview but also jumped back and forth while keeping a consistent story and actually making it 100 times better. This shit is so good Hayden! Maybe I missed it, but how many hours did you put into this Sam & Colby episode?
i'm literally a professional editor to make a living and I dont usually particularly enjoy it very much. Your channel actually makes me fall in love with editing again. Thank You Hillier. You are appreciated.
Your content is so good the fact that its free is awsome
The fact that UA-cam is free blows my mind every day.
I've always admired your editing skills Hayden! You're an amazing storyteller.
I love your emphasis on using a non linear narrative to make the story more engaging! It's so fun to watch the breakdown of edits which all contribute meaningfully to the final film 😁✨
thanks for yet another free masterclass sample on movie editing, always worth the time to watch in full.
I only just found your channel recently and have really enjoyed the breakdown and reasonings that you’ve provided in your videos. I definitely feel that I’m at a more confident and in a better position with your lessons and advice than I was previously, especially when I’m pushing and investing in furthering my skills and ability to tell a story for the different platforms and styles that videos can be published on. A massive thank you for all of this and presenting us with this opportunity.
It’s really satisfying watchin your video and learning so much interesting stuff! Keep up the great work !
This straight up amazed me.
Keep thriving!🖤
I’m definitely learning a lot from you, Hayden! Specially about pace and going straight to the point... I’m still in the beginning of my learning journey so my very first Vlogs I used to talk a lot, because I had no intention when shooting scenes. I’m now just editing footage from a trip a took last year and trying to squeeze only the good parts and see how I feel about the editing and pace.
If that makes you happy, please keep making content like that... they are absolutely amazing! 💙
Always learning something new from you bro, keep the videos coming.
As always I'm learning so much! This content is honestly so great for my own creative process! ❤️
Binge watching just about all of your videos have taught me so much already that I am super excited to implement! I'm legitimately sitting here just increasing my excitement thinking about my next edit.
I love the editing breakdowns
Love the way you tell a story, documentary editing can be really challenging yet creative as an editor. I love to edit following similar principles of storytelling, whether its a youtube daily vlog or a documentary.
Thise b roll shots really set the tone of the story and created that mystery which will make an audience interested to find out what happens next. am also considering sending u the mail.
this is dope ma bro! Love the vids
Fantastic explanation on your story telling techniques for this project. Great work!
I love how you're showing how you moved things around in the timeline. Basically editing the edit. Kinda meta.
I got introduced to you from watching your interview on Ed's Film Booth channel. Since then I have been binge watching your content.
I feel like I have already learnt so much from you. Sadly, I am now disappointed with every video on my channel. Time for me to rebrand, restructure, and replace a lot of my content. I'm extremely excited to try some of the techniques that I've seen on your channel.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us! It means a heck of a lot!
I remember watching that documentray and being thoroughly impressed with the editing.
Best teacher ever ur videos have helped me learn editing ty
Excellent information! Never underestimate the power of good B-roll, it keeps viewers attention and overall aids in the storytelling process
😂 I’m like glued to the screen watching you breakdown this video and Sam and Colby are just sitting there like yeahhhhhh. Lol awesome job man! I’m learning a lot from your channel!
The ending was hilarious nicely done
Your work is absolutely incredible. Congrats on all of your success.
Great walk through💯🔥
When I was a little younger, I was watching this and I remember going into it thinking it was haunted and getting confused but still watching it, under the context that it was haunted lol
Man am I glad I found your channel. As a fellow fcpx user I know I am going to get a lot of fantastic tips to help my mediocre editing. Hope you find time to create more content on this channel.
Bravo Mistro! This video is not only informative but also motivational!
I love that you leave in the timeline on the bottom so we can see the full picture as you're talking - just found your channel, love it! Might send in an application 😁
Hey thank you for watching, Go for it!
Ah I love these breakdowns
Never heard of sam and Colby but im definitely checking them out
as u should💅🏽💅🏽💅🏽
You should, their videos are pretty interesting and they are very inspiring and they helped me through so much❤️
Checkout the video where they explore the abandoned amusement park 👌🏼 it’s awesome
The way you cut up some of these clips and play them out of order is so brilliant, I’m gonna have to start trying that!
12:20 - 12:32 We see what you did there 👏 sneaky little clever rascal!
Love your work 🖤
you should make a video of where you get the music / sound effects, that'd be cool.
you are awesome!
most of the time people just search on you tube what they want like Mario jump sound effect then down load it and use it later for future content
just sick how talented you are
THIS IS EPIC *apparently, i have fallen to the deep rabbit hole of watching all your videos... good luck to me
This stuff is super interesting! I would love it if you would go over some more of this documentary.
Until thanks for this epic glimpse!
Wow, this is soo cool. It's just amazing.. I have no words.. I learned soo much from this video.. thanks :-) I always want to tell the story how it happened too, but this just opened my eyes. Editing has been really painful for me sometimes.. you know cutting all the beautiful moments from your adventures short so the video is not too boring.. but now I have a new goal.. want to learn this kind of story telling.. it's incredible 😍
I wish I was good enough to edit for these guys. I have so much more to learn and thanks to these videos, I am able to take the necessary steps
Thanks for this @HillierSmith it would be useful to have a little video of the timeline just to see how you construct the timeline itself. So can see all the J cuts etc.
Need more like this
I would 110% watch a full length editing breakdown of this doco!
Hey Hayden, love the videos. Could you do one specifically dedicated to how you use music in you're editing process
Yooo im watching this forsure!!!
It's just great to watch a video without an add
This man is next level
Hey Hayden, I'm curious of what music and sound effects library you use or if and how you built it yourself!
Amazing channel, been hoping for you to show your work and the though process behind it for years :)
That's crazy! I've always been impressed with Sam and Colby's editing and never knew you were the mastermind of all of it! I've been watching Logan for years and have always been impressed with your work! Keep Killin it man. You will be making oscar worthy movies one day.
You're such a good editor!!!
Let’s go I might be applying
14:20 i didn’t notice little things like one minute it’s sunset, the next minute it’s midday (i figured it was probably the next day) or that colby was sitting at the table and next minute it was sam, because i was invested in the story and what was going on
Finally. FINALLY!!!! I can nerd out on editing with people who understands it. This is worth thousands of dollars!
Just this channel's content is a masterclass on its own. I can't imagine what his paid masterclass would be like. I wish Hayden had more slots for that.
Same I would have loved to learn from him
I worked on that pool party music video shoot. It was interesting meeting those guys. They are crazy with the stunts.
This was amazing. I personally only make Minecraft videos but I'm trying to get more into story telling within my videos. Finding your channel has already impacted me in an amazing way. Thank you so much, you're very inspiring.
You should create a video breaking down how you compete for viewers interests and editing choices because I’ve watched all of them front to back!
Brilliant!!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge for free!
I love sam and Colby so so much. And yes that video was something else that was one of my favorite. So we really have thank you too for make it more beautiful.
This is some great under the hood content. Love it!
That’s awesome! I know it’s not me but this is a great way to find a really good editor!!!!
These videos make me feel really dumb, but I am learning from them and I love it!
yeaaahhhh babbbbbbyyyyyyy.... You have helped me ALOT bro. i just did what you taught in my last 2 youtube videos. and broooooo the Audience retention is through the roof now. people used to watch it for 1-1:30 mins and now after applying your skills and knowledge i have an Average View Duration of 3:50-4-30 in my last 2 videos. so please keep posting more and also congratulations on that best editor award... You totally deserved it bro. also.... Should i aim for higher AVD?? or is 4Min AVD is okay to go viral on youtube ?? im kinda confused what to do now
Congrats on 100k
Thanks, Luis! It was a crap year, so seeing this channel grow has been a great joy to me in quarantine. Onwardsa and upwards!
Fun fact I stayed a full summer with Brent in his apartment in NYC in 2013 and now I see him here learning about editing. Small world
I hope to be an amazing video creator like you in the future
Yoo, I'm still watching the video but I might apply when I finish it 👀
I don't know why Hillier, but everytime I watched your vids. i'm pumped up to edit a video 😅
this was really interesting
Loving the content Hayden. I was wondering where do you get all your sound effects?
I think it is Epidemic Sounds (since some of the audio effects names are starting with ES_ ...)
Your videos enspire and motivate me everytime! Greetings from Germany!
Greetings from Los Angeles!
This video makes me wanna vlog again...
Thank you Sam, Colby and Hayden! Raza :)
Hayden you’re amazing bro I absolutely love Sam and Colby. I am sending the email now!
I don't watch them, but now i really want to watch that documentary because of your way of editing and story telling skills
Go check out Sam and Colby. If you enjoy my style, I've cut a lot of their videos. Some of my favourite creators to work with, honestly.
Can you make a video about what makes the best gaming video
“In need of a editor” my brain “MY TIME TO SHINE” let me know
You're the new Peter McKinnon of videography dude. You're worth a million classes in a single video, it's insane.
Just sent an application for this opportunity ! 🤞🏻🙏🏻
That intro got me lol
Hey Hayden, you're the best editor I know of.. Soon I'll be filming and editing a few music videos. Ones with stories, darker, night time kinda emotional vibes. I've already filmed and edited two videos. But I'd like to see if you have any tips for editing music videos. What works what doesn't. Things like that. Thank you for everything, you've made my editing game so much better.
WE ARE A FAN FROM 🇵🇭
man you content has improved a lot!
Thanks Lucas. You're an OG.
@@HillierSmith np :)
I'm actually studying editing right now (i have one year left) and i've always wanted to be a editor for youtube videos especially sam and colby styled videos, my first language isn't english tho so I might struggle a bit lol.
very nice
I'm a terrible and rather new editor, but I've never thought about mixing up the clips to keep the viewer interested... Thank you for helping and in a way telling us techniques and that.
Being terrible is the first step in being good. I believe in you!
@@HillierSmith Thank you 🙏
Hillier - what you should do is provide some clips for people to download and make their own edit from and then you guys critique and judge them in another video announcing the winner! I'd love to give that a go! Thanks for the video and the tips!
You’re a fucking genius. Taking notes rn.
How do you find time to work on all of these projects? I wish you all the best, this is very inspiring mate
Yayyyy Sam and Colby!!! ❤️❤️❤️
8:28 dude i remember gliding and shooting missiles on my oppressor here
If I may ask, and you have the time ,what do you think of my editing skills in a few videos I've posted? Just wondering.
Fort Pike, Fort Macomb, few of my abandoned, cemetery videos and so on.
YOu are like a Jedi of editing...
Could you create more videos like this but with focus of editing in different contents?
Could I ask, what app do you use to edit? I’m very curious!
