So I made this John Wick 4 Original Sound Design for fun, because Sound Design is SEVERLY underappreciated in filmmaking, they often say we see more with our ears than with our eyes.
Therefore I want to learn how I can be a better sound designer myself, so I chose one of my favourite sequences from the John Wick series and built my own design from this,
I'm Hayden Hillier-Smith. On this channel I will break down what makes good editing...pulling back the curtain on how editors make the choices to keep YOU, THE AUDIENCE, engaged. This includes showcasing the creative choices I have made. I hope you can learn something new and inspire you to edit.
Recently, I crafted a John Wick 4 Original Sound Design as a passion project, demonstrating the critical importance of sound design in the world of filmmaking and film editing. Sound design is an oft-overlooked aspect of movie production, despite its pivotal role in enhancing the audience's experience. In the action-packed, adrenaline-fueled realm of the John Wick franchise, sound design plays an even more significant part in immersing viewers in the high-stakes world of this cinematic universe.
My name is Hayden Hillier-Smith, and on this channel, I aim to unravel the mysteries of effective film editing, delving into the techniques and strategies employed by editors to captivate and maintain their audience's attention. As we explore the exciting realm of the John Wick series, we'll examine my own creative decisions, highlighting how they contribute to a gripping and immersive sound design. I hope that through these insights, you'll gain a newfound appreciation for sound design, and feel inspired to embark on your own journey in film editing and sound design. Together, we'll dive into the world of John Wick and beyond, discovering the secrets that make these movies so unforgettable.

It's very refreshing to see a technical subject taught with such enjoyment and humour. Thanks for the inspiration Hillier!
Dude definitely knows his stuff. This is the second of his videos I've seen today and it's really interesting.
Mastery at its best! 👏😎
So true
This was a really cool demo, but what I'd REALLY love to see is how you do sound design for a standard youtube video, e.g. a talking head video. You always manage to mix in subtle risers, drum hits, instrumentals, etc. in a way that really helps the emotional flow of a vid but I've had a hard time accurately imitating 😢
Thank your
Same! Definitely need more talking head tips
Same. I have no idea what to do with my talking head videos. I know they sound quiet, but I'm at a loss for what to do.
Even a vlog I'm working on. It's a bunch of 2 second clips mashed up at times. Do I really sound design those 2 second clips. I feel like the video would feel chaotic
Having those options are priceless. I bet it took a while to collect all those. They sure don't have much in my package, only 4 sword options...mmmmm
I would say add some B rolls in it so that it isn't a full talking head video
This was amazing!
Sounds to me we should get sound designers on the Podcast, what do you think Hayden?
Lets do it.
Appreciating sound when editing is gold 🔑 thank you
Hayden 🤝 Hayden
@@HillierSmith 👀
@@HillierSmith any chance you could get a trailer editor on the podcast?
Wow, this is a fantastic demonstration of the power of sound design in film-making! This showcases how sound can be used to enhance the audience's experience and immersiveness in a film. Thank you for sharing your insights and creative decisions with us, Hayden! 🙏

This is ESSENTIAL viewing for any editor sheesh - thanks for enlightening folks on the sound design / mix process and, most importantly, talking through the rationale of sound choice!
I don't know but I have a very different opinion. I've tried these things in my own videos but the retention was terrible. Until I heard paddy Galloway's perspective and then I understood is what you say in the video is more important. Even in this video what mattered the most is what he was saying at the first 30 seconds and what words he used to hype the rest of the video. You can be very minimal with your editing but if what you're saying aka your script is more interesting, has unusual or not a conventional point of view and has more attempts to trigger emotions, that would get you far better retention. The rest are the cherry on top
@@arrow2380 A combination of both, though, you have a perfect recipe for success on the platform
Sound design is what I’ve been putting the most focus on lately, and it makes a huge difference!
Long time viewer, first time commenter - This was SO MUCH FUN to watch! You really expressed the joy of doing sound design! I laughed allll throughout this video and thoroughly enjoyed learning from your process! Please make more sound design videos (especially with different subject material/themes)! This was a blast.
Never thought of nesting audio layers together. I love that
I think adding some EQ on some of the sounds could help even more!
I already knew my sound design was lacking. But you seriously opened my eyes to the endless possibilities of what you can do with it.
I have only been at this a couple months now, but I would not have made it this far without you, Finzar, and Creator Booth.
So thanks for everything so far and everything you will make in the future.
“screw realism, let’s go for style!”
that's the right mindset 🤌
One of the most Creative editors I came across on UA-cam. Love watching your brilliance.
Thank you Hillier.
Man. This makes me excited to get into the sound part of editing. Watching you put it together was infectious.
This felt like a master class video! And it made so much sense. How editing for the proper sound makes the world of difference. Wow, awesome job! Loved it!
That was so damn entertaining, insightful, and just downright clever. I loved how you broke it done into layers! The best sound design editing tutorial I’ve seen!
This was such a solid breakdown! Thanks for making it fun to watch too 🙌
sound design is my favorite part of the edit. Thoroughly enjoyed this!
The amount of joy you got out of this was amazing! This is what editing is all about haha making things work together!
This is absolutely brilliant and so inspirational
I've always wanted to add more sound design to my videos but in a niche of film where an iconic sound design is already present I always am reluctant to try create my own in fear of what the fans may think but this proved you can redo the whole thing if you want and do it better.
Definitely gonna add more sound design from now on!
Loved this! Sound is def underrated. Would love to see another video like this, except instead of John Wick it's just a "regular" YT video that has great sound design. Since that what most of us are actually doing on a day-to-day basis.
Also I know you have a wild sound library, would love to hear some advice on building a more complete sound library
That's one of your (if not) the best video about editing in my opinion. Not only it's really detailed; your edits on a video about edit is also sick.
The amount of detail put into this is incredible!
This came at a really good time. I'm finishing up the sound design for a school project (short film) and needed inspiration for how to even begin on non-diegetic sound. There wasn't a lot in this video, but the "fire style" approach definitely gives me some Ideas 😁
what is your school name? Do schools give short film making as projects? really? Where are you from?
@@ramprasath1552 i go to a colledge in the uk, and its full of great projects each term, the drama crew is great with orginaing actors act
@@ramprasath1552 I mean that is literally what film school is
@@ramprasath1552 communication technology in high school gives you stuff like that as projects
The joy you have during the edit. I laugh with you bro! 😁😁 This is why we are making videos. 😇
This is why I love video editing, you really are an inspiration.
Just seeing how much joy you were having with editing was the highlight. great edit
Incredible stuff Hillier. Sound design is excellent. Only critique is for a potential "Layer 8" - send all of the tracks to a reverb that emulates the space they're all in to glue all of the sounds together. (Altiverb has some good realistic reverb presets) I'm pretty sure there's one for an underpass on a highway on it.
Wnderfully paced and enteraining. Better than most editing videos.
That was wicked. You crushed it man. So cool to just sit back and watch; lots of unspoken lessons learned 💪🏻
Absolutely incredible. Just got into learning sound design and it’s vamped up my edits immensely. Excited for you course Hayden, wondering when it’s coming…👀
This channel and VIDIQ and the reasons I stay motivated when doing YT. VidIQ gives me the realization of what I can do analytically and this as well as the editing podcast both give me ways to stylistically improve my actual editing.
I need a full release of the Lizzie version
Your reactions and excitement bring me joy! Thanks for sharing, this is dope!
prob one of the best videos i have seen on sound design. dont think the bell worked anymore with the last song but the song worked so perfectly. this was dope
A goddamn masterclass, not just in editing/sound design, but also showing that editing is FUN. It can be a chore but it's also an opportunity to let loose :)
Which software is this?
@@legendarysports5812Final Cut Pro
Watching you laugh at little moments as you're building this out give me such joy, because I do THE SAME THING 😂😂 Sometimes, when you just put a piece of the puzzle in there, it can't help but illicit a chuckle. Like putting together the last piece of a jigsaw puzzle and a water droplet sound plays like the intro to a Ted talk. 😂😂😂
This is was fun to watch! Your passion and humour are unparalleled! Just pure creativity!
Really inspired me to have some fun with the edits
Now that was fun to watch, I got just as much enthusiasm as you when hearing the sounds and getting idea of where to go from there. absolutely love the song choice and cuts you made with it
Great Video as always! I like the idea that John was listening to that song as they pulled up on him. Sounds were amazing, I’m currently in the process of trying to create a library of them, at first in the beginning I thought you were pulling them from Lickd (I’m already subscribed and got excited) but alas the search continues!
As always you amaze with your editing abilities. When’s the next update with the course you hinted at?
he doesn't say where he gets the sound libraries, right?
that shit pumped me up. An absolute goals masterclass. This gave me the confidence to be more stylish and bold with some of my choices. I actually do a bit of sound design on my channel but mostly to just fill in for the flaws in my recording, and maybe some random nature sounds to enhance the mood. But this made me want to be bolder, and also... WTF is lickd???? I mean I'm def down to check that out to add to artlist (which I enjoy)
Arguably the best video on sound design I've seen. Flowed perfectly and had everything you could want in a video. Fantastic man, keep it up!
Great info, amazing edit (the work in progress and actual video of course). Thanks for the helpful, quality content!
This is deadly sick ,Demo Hillier..I use capcut on phone and what I have learnt is you can use pretty any Editing software to do this ...skills matter..thanks for this
Hi Hillier! This is incredible!!! Can I ask where you get your sound FX from? It was so nicely packaged in that FCPx library.
Your sound design is UNREAL. Truly inspiring stuff
Brilliant! I love the attention to detail like the fabric wooshing and the bike bell!
#wheresthebat?
FKN STUNNING. You killed it!
that's freakin' awesome, one can really see how much you are enjoying the process. the overall scene is magnificent
this was amazing to watch. You open me a world!!
Im learning editing atm & your video just gives me lots of idea. Please make more content like this. Love it!
Thank you for showing me what's possible! This was a huge eye opener to my creative outlet!
Sooo much fun - just starting to really dive deep into sound design, thank you for the hilarious masterpiece here!
MAKE THIS A SERIES!!! This is so much fun to watch!
Wow, that was mind-blowing,
This is one of the best videos of sound design 👌.
Thank you.
I loved watching you design this layer by layer. Well done!
🙏 Thanks for the inspiration Hillier!
That was such an incredible break down of sound design. Thank you for sharing this!!!!!!!!
Wow - so many layers and so much solid timing
Indeed, it was very fun! I love the sound design part in the editing. Sometimes you got tired after all the cuts and you want to finish a project as soon as possible. But sound design and music can put all the work together in one finished piece. So I am trying not to neglect it :)
Thank you for the editing tips Austin
Sound design is so much fun! Nice to see you enjoying it as much as I do. 😄
THAT WAS FANTASTIC!! AMAZINHG
This video was soooooo fun. Not just the sound design work but the way you edited this video was your best work. MORE PLS
You are SUCH a pleasure to watch. Thank you for sharing your genius. 😊❤
Dude! you are doing a great job!
Genius! You had me cracking up the whole way through… while learning about sound design. Loved it
This was awesome! I've been consuming editing content like a ravenous beast the last few weeks to sharpen skills for a campaign launch video I've been working on, and nothing has been as purely joyful as this video, on both ends. I burst out in laughter a couple times with you, (I also learned a lot). This was most excellent. Thank you!
bruh I loves these vids so damn much, please keep doing these types of vids, we can all learn with you.
That “I made it” was awesome
This was phenomenal. Your talent is so inspiring! Thank you!
Great video! Sound design and finding the right music is definitely the hardest part for me, thanks for the video!!
Left me speechless! Insane editing
Thank you for making these. Love it. You are the best! 😍🙏
Wow! What a masterpiece!
This is so beautiful and inspiring. I love the way you presented it
Even your edit of you editing (editception?) with all your reactions was spot on and entertaining to watch, even if you weren't into editing.
I like that you are enjoying the process
This was awesome to watch. Just the fact that you were having so much fun while doing this was captivating.
Incredible video! I've always put effort in sound design but this opens my eyes to exactly how much more attention I could be putting into it!
This was so fun and inspirational to watch. Thank you Hiller!
You make editing feel like play. I've never once had fun while watching video editing videos, but you have me constantly giggling. If I could approach even 10% of your skills one day, I will have won at life.
So gooood! I love your edits both on the track and for your own youtube video. Great stuff man! Cheers.
I loved this. Thanks for sharing. Really enjoy how much fun you have with the process of building this.
I was super focused in this video, constantly engaged at what he would add next, then the bell at 10:27 I just laughed (prior to his laugh, which makes the moment more genuine). Such a good moment!
What did I just watch 🤯🤯 I was on with this each and every second. You absolutely nailed it man🤯🤯.
This had be glued in the entire time, so inspiring and I never knew you could reverse sounds😮
This intro is so good. I also really enjoyed seeing the way you think and execute in real time.
Yes! This reminds me of a quote that sticks with me to this day "Music is the King of all professions." People underrate the importance of sound, especially ambient music. Which is 1 of the many factors that helps me captivate my audience since I make video essays.
Wow what a impressive sound gallery, that was awesome to watch and good laughs
Brilliant brilliant brilliant! This looks like so much fun!
Wow this was impressive. Been a long time since I sat through a 17 minute UA-cam video without clicking off once. This video in itself is a work of editing genius how you switched between the editing tabs and playback previews. You had me laughing with you too, Great work!
dude please upload more. 😃😃
i personally learn a lot about your experience about video editing and how it effects on people
I love how much fun you're having with this edit! 😂
well done! you took an already amazing scene to the next level!
I try to break this down for people a lot, thank you for doing it so awesomely!!
That was amazing! Sound is 50% of the video, so it has to be polished. Thank you for share your knowledge with us 🙌
