    I think I could watch a 1x speed video of this process without music.
    I found the first two and a half minutes VERY relaxing and soothing.

    Being a machinist of predominantly alloys, it's interesting to see the characteristics of wood in a cut. It looks like it all chips well, and handles plunging like a boss. I have always had a soft spot for the HAAS VF series! And good on you guys for keeping it all local, I know HAAS is a California based company as well.

    • @keithcrain
      @keithcrain 7 років тому +9

      Man, I am glad I am not the only one thinking that. "1 inch thick tone wood" and then shave it 1cm thick wasting almost an inch of wood for another project. That guitar has no soul.

    • @amphetamineblue4172
      @amphetamineblue4172 7 років тому +20

      It's an arch top, the centre section is much thicker than the outsides. Pause it at 4:55 and you can see very little wood is take off the centre section

    • @stevenpeterson9735
      @stevenpeterson9735 7 років тому +3

      That was a waste of that beautiful wood. If that were me, I would get at least a couple of guitars out of that one blank.

    • @claudevieaul1465
      @claudevieaul1465 7 років тому +4

      Yes, it sort of hurts to see so much of that gorgeous wood wasted.
      But to be fair, of you've ever seen how classical instruments like celli and voilins are made then you'd find the waste proportionally much more on flamed maple etc...
      But nevertheless, regarding the problems of sourcing viable amounts of tonewoods, I'd definitely opt for a vacuumformed veneer. A burl top is only esthetics, so a veneer would look just as good. But with less bragging rights...

    • @Kylora2112
      @Kylora2112 7 років тому +7

      If you have any experience with machine shops, a very large percent of raw material gets thrown away as chips. The size of the raw material is generally a round bar or square plate, and then you have to make your part(s) out of that. Same goes with a guitar. You start with something thicker than your max and bigger than the profile size, then carved out to the appropriate contours. Good luck trying to get another guitar out of that.

  • @Jakfilm
    @Jakfilm 7 років тому +7

    Perhaps I'm missing something, but it seems to me that you could get two tops out of that huge thick top that got carved away - why does it start so thick only to remove most of it?

    • @OGStinkywizzleteats
      @OGStinkywizzleteats 6 років тому +3

      Jakfilm The top has to start at that thickness because it tapers. The area where the bridge sits remains flat while there is a taper to the top the closer to the neck you go. This is to ensure that the neck is at an angle that allows for proper string height along the fretboard, but not sitting too high or low at the bridge. Hope that makes sense.

      Davi Silva Mota this is a buckeye burl top, they grow like this. This is one of the big knots you sometimes see on the bottom of trees. It contains all sorts of figuring and checks some of which has to be filled back up (in this case some of the black pieces on the top)
