As soon as you sanded back the brown and cleaned it off...man, I'd be happy with that! But then the yellow really brings it home...Great work, man. Learning a lot from watching these!
Is it me? Do you ever think once, you've gone to far? I'm doing a burst and I'm thinking I went to far, that's why I bought a laminated ES 175 China body (my first) and I think if it doesn't work? So far it looks angry. An Angrybirst like I waited 50 yrs of playng and I'm making my first hollowbody and I'm making my first hollowbody electric an Angryburst. My electronic's same and different. I was raised in a TV repair shop that my father owned an operated over my first 20 years and 50 yrs of playing and learning, but I never thought of building some guitars until my first hardbody was dying. I was built by al professional nass maker. So then I made one. And like it. And now I'm making another but liter and my love with wood is weird, but the look of grade 5A flame to scallop is mesmerizing! Today I split a cord of an Olive Tree and the Nation's Revere honor natural wood of Israel. It's taking me 5 year to break this piece of a log and I still need to split a 2nd board really another log like the 1st!
@@bigdguitars Love this video as well as all your other ones. I have a well figured maple cap Tele body that I want to do a similar finish on. Have a couple questions about the sanding process . Are you using a variable speed sander and if so how fast do you set it at? And also how much pressure are you applying? Thanks
Man! I do hardwood flooring (creating the samples) and I love this work you do. Similar to what I'm doing. You have a lot of talent & I hope you know you're gifted!
Oh my... Dude, that was f*ckin amazing. Thanks for this vid. I’m s hobbyist, and you really piqued my interest in trying this type of work. Absolutely beautiful! It came to life right before my eyes..
That is fucking gorgeous! I thought it was waaaaaay to dark w/ 1st coat and figured you were going to sand it- inspiring- just getting into dying -and trying to do enough research to do it right - thx fer sharin! I didn’t get this good instruction at Luthier school!!!! Serious
Hey BigD, I saw you reference a Finewoodworking magazine. could you tell me either the year and month or the issue number of that FWW? I'd love to review that but don't want to easter egg it. thanks, Kevin
I haven't thought about going that route yet. I do a lot of one offs. I have a purple burst coming in the next few days thats has an unreal amount of figure.
When you put the tue oil on in 5 or 6 or 7 coats, how long do you wait between coats? Tung oil is one of my go to oils, but I'd like to try true oil....what does true oil do that tung oil won't? Is true oil thinner (I often dilute tung oil it is so thick). Lastly, why is naptha a better cleaning agent than mineral spirits or denatured alcohol? Does naptha dry fast like denatured alcohol? My application is hand sculptures, bowls, carvings, furniture, woodturning etc
Hi, thanks for posting these videos! I have a few questions: I am assuming the stain is mixed with water? Are you having any problems with the moisture content becoming too high? Also, when using oil as a finish, can you buff it out to a shine, or is it more of a satin finish? You mention 6 or 7 coats, do you sand in between? Thanks, it looks great! Fred
No issues with the water it's like a top coat. I have a vid on using truoil and buffing it out. I love truoil. Best finish easy to repair etc... Wet sand with linseed oil after the 5th ish coat. Take a look at the vid
Christ almighty flooding that brown stain on there haha! love the look it's amazing, are you a luthier? do you have a company? love to look into more of your work
Beutifull Tiger-eye!, That's one of the most bitch'n curly guitars there is!, And I keep up with all the top-tec guitars! If I where you, I would keep it! Shawn, from tahuya wa.
im sorry, that's the most beautiful bookmatch ive ever seen...it looks like the ark of the covenant should be coming from the bottom pup location...they couldn't make a laminate top to compete with this ever...
I really don't know why you are not more recognized in the online community. You are literally THE source to watch when it comes to staining a guitar top.
Those Japanese Fenders are so clean looking and for a Telecaster that guitar is a rock machine. Got to compliment you on your playing, can't beat playing a little old school Aerosmith, nice job.
This blew my mind, I did NOT think that top was going to turn out to be one of the nicest I've ever seen. The contrast you got on that is on its own orbit, wow!
I have an important question on the finish on a neck . I'm doing a pearl color burst with a 4k finish coat I have the Matt black done but the Fingerboard I did my own mother of pearl cutouts for the neck did the inlay cuts on finger boards all my alien inlays glued in no excess glue. Now I wanted to do a gloss finish more for show as it won't go on tour with me not yet anyway I tried gloss poly urethane terrible on rosewood took it all off. Would True oil work as it's hard finish and can fill the poures in the wood after 3-4 coats it should be nice do you think that a good way or recommend something else. I'm in a holding pattern on my build.
At the last dye application (time = 10 minutes 30 seconds), did you sand again, before you applied the Oil ? It looks like you did, but you did not say so, and then the next frame picture was you applying oil. Great Video! I am using your technique for a Curley Maple bar top
Don't mind me, I'll just be watching this on repeat.
don't be stealin any of my vid ideas hahahaha.
Well there go all of my content plans for the next six months... haha
@@BradAngove Feelin' the love
Same here buddy.
This is maybe the best paint job I have ever seen on a guitar. Just incredible. Would love to have seen it finished. Beautiful.
Please, please, please show us more of the end result! A dried, buffed and finished piece!
Probably one of the best looking stains . The natural wood pattern around the pickups is crazy cool
You have an amazing talent for this. I'd be proud to have any of your guitars in my collection. You inspire me to try your techniques on my builds.
I watch all your videos and I think this is still your best finish. Can't wait to try it on a burl top I have on the bench!
It almost looks like a landscape painting. Amazing.
I don't know how many times I've watched this. One of my fav videos on the channel, along with a few others
You thought this top wasn't so great? It looks amazing, such unusual figuring.
Awesome!!! I'd love to see the final product!!!

Thank you for sharing you knowledge, now all i need is your skills. That piece of timber really deserved your work. Brilliant.
Thanks for this video. That is incredible work. I want to try this when I get my first build finished.
thanks!

Amazing. Love watching these come to life.
Wow that thing looks awesome
That would've made the coolest la cabronita ever. Some TV's in there, a roasted flame maple neck on it. Wow, as always great work. I'm a big fan!
That might be the most beautiful guitar I've seen
So helpful to watch this process man, thanks a lot for doing this.
That finish is truly beautiful
That little blurp at the top of the control cavity keeps drawing my eye tho
Unbelievable! Great arts!
what a crazy figure! Nice job!!
Hi, Friend!!! I like so much your work!!! Congrats Regards from Mexico City
I liked how it looked with just the yellow, after the 1st sanding. Reminded me of the surface of the moon.
WOW!!!! Look at that grain, unbelievable!!! Good job man.
one of the best piece of wood I have ever found.
I'd say man, did you think it was going to turn out like that?
Absolutely fantastic !
Wow
What a beauty
Nice job
Man!!!! You're AMAZING!!!!!
That is one gorgeous top...great technique....

I kept talking to my phone. "Stop touching its perfect" I was so happy you kept touching it. Never listen to me.
Looks so awesome man!.
Fantastic, I'm gonna have to give this a shot.
That looks great really cool
thank you look forward to it by the way that's a beautiful finish on that guitar
That's beautiful!
Mother of god... thats outstanding!!!
This is really awesome. I am looking to I corporate these techniques on my maple classical guitars. This would look KILLER on quilted maple

wow amazing!
how did you finish it btw? did you use shellac? polyurethane? or just the truoil?
F...king AWESOME!
Beautiful finish and a great video. Can I ask if you're at all worried about contamination of the dyes by dipping different coloured rags in them?
Love your videos, Big D. question: do you dilute the naphtalene that you use to clean off the top with water?
What kind of finishes work with this? Polyurethane? Tung Oil? Great job!
Shellac :)
Looks nice!
thanks!
Don't you need to put sanding sealer before you put oil?
WOW!! I love it
Tortoise shell burst. Nice!
Instead of true oil or could you just spray clear lacquer???
this thing better have gone to namm....hope it had playability and tone to match...what a finish...
I haven't thought about going that route yet. I do a lot of one offs. I have a purple burst coming in the next few days thats has an unreal amount of figure.
Is there a way to create the flamed maple look on a simple plain body?
Feather it brother.
You say in your videos to use Mohawk setting spray and then add Tru Oil but I have heard from woodworkers that it’s bad idea? What gives?
Love your videos BigD! Question for ya. what do you cut the stain concentrates with? Thank you in advance!

Wait at least 24 hours.
+BigDGuitars - And also, after the oil coats, do you put a finish on it or a polish or you just let it like that?
Great job. Did you apply any sanding sealer before shooting this video? Thanks
no after it was all done.

Where do you get your tops from? Ebay or a distributor or something?
+Sam Fraser usually eBay
wow wow wow...
7:50 the top looks like liquid gold! Looks awsome
i save this for a project.. Is the stains that you're using are expensive?
they are about 20 a bottle. not too bad.
Nice.!
Needs more cowbell.
Sweet....
It looked good at 8:12 would had been tempted to stop there
Christ almighty flooding that brown stain on there haha! love the look it's amazing, are you a luthier? do you have a company? love to look into more of your work
+John Walsh I sell on my site bigdguitars
The clear solution you used after the first sanding was called what?
+Micheal Beers usually naptha
Fun fact, naptha is what's used to clean the radar absorbent material on the F-117, because water would soak into it and fuck it all up.
Sorry, WAS used. RIP F-117
how much would you sell a guitar like this for?
what is napa
Beutifull Tiger-eye!, That's one of the most bitch'n curly guitars there is!, And I keep up with all the top-tec guitars! If I where you, I would keep it! Shawn, from tahuya wa.
I lovethe content bro. The only thing that gets me is how you pronounce "figure" lol like figerr . no worries, Its all me lol keep up the great work!
My Chiiiicaaaago accent
Just unreal
Guitar porn. You really got that top to pop. I Like :)
Not really faded just uniform. Must be darker and lighter on middle
There are no rules. It doesn't have to be anything. It's his finish and it clearly does fade.
im sorry, that's the most beautiful bookmatch ive ever seen...it looks like the ark of the covenant should be coming from the bottom pup location...they couldn't make a laminate top to compete with this ever...
I wanna build a guitar but I'm afraid to ruin such expensive wood
Boy am I hard
I dub thee "Pompeii"....ok im done...lol
I wish you guitar painters would show a fine image of it with the hardware on
I agree!
I really don't know why you are not more recognized in the online community. You are literally THE source to watch when it comes to staining a guitar top.
This ain't rocket science homie, millions of woodworkers know how to do this!
this looks absolutely stunning! what an exceptional piece of wood!
great flow, love the fast forwards, i didn't feel the need to skip ahead at all =)
Outstanding pattern at 12.55! Love that color and shapes. Super.
Looks absolutely superb, what a lovely top and you got the color scheme spot on
What make of Naphtha is that Bro? There are so many variants, but watching you use it makes me want to get the one you have :)
It is incredible how you make such nice work seem so attainable for average mortals.
jay elliott Right Jay?!! I said the same thing! “Wow, maybe I can do this!” (Of course I’ll botch it up)
I have yet to try it, but love the idea of sanding back and trying again if the results arn't quite right.
Those Japanese Fenders are so clean looking and for a Telecaster that guitar is a rock machine. Got to compliment you on your playing, can't beat playing a little old school Aerosmith, nice job.
I have to ask - What issue of Fine Woodworking was that?
That reference guide to finish tones looks to be a good one to have.
TIA,

you sound like Garfield and that's awesome lol also great vid.
I'm absolutely in love with this top. Oh my God...
Before the first stain, did you raise and sand the grain at all? or just sand to 220 and have at it? Thanks!
I’ve watched this Vid countless times, never gets old…👍👏

This video inspired me to do my own tele build! Thanks for making these videos! I must have watched this a dozen times by now man.
Should I and back the sanding sealer before adding finish?
Did you thin the transtints with water or Alcohol? Which do you recommend and why? Your yellow looks very thin, like just a couple drops?
