American Bandstand 1969 - I Was Made To Love Her, Stevie Wonder

  • In Sept, 1969, Bandstand changed the set, logo and theme song without any warning or hype. For the first and only time in it’s 30 year run on ABC, some version of “Bandstand Boogie” was not the theme song. Here is the new “Bandstand Theme” (1969-1974) by Mike Curb with the big doors opening to reveal…..Dick Clark.
    In this, the 2nd episode of the new season, AB celebrates “Stevie Wonder Day” as the kids dance to his 1967, #2 hit.
    ….And for a little context, 2 hours before this very broadcast, CBS premiered a new Saturday morning cartoon show about a talking Great Dane and his 4 teenaged, mystery-solving friends called, “Scooby Doo Where Are You!”. (Zoinks!)
    Airdate Sept. 13, 1969

      I didn’t think of that, but now that you mention it, it reminds me of Soul Train too Angelique Collins. Don Cornelius and Dick Clark were both great innovators.

      YouCanDanceToit! Don Cornelius said that he got the idea for the “Soul Train Line” from parties he attended back in the 50’s and 60’s. This is actually a great clip of the kids dancing.

    This video clip does bring back childhood memories. I do remember seeing this episode when it first aired, and watching Scooby-Doo’s debut.... The Mike Curb theme was used throughout the early 70s. I recall that the Bandstand Boogie theme was used again when the set was changed in 1974, when the disco era began.

      I love the transition of the sets and the rarely heard theme. Also, your dancing really evolved over the years. Did you take lessons to learn this style of dance? I love this style (swing?)

    • @dancerdon9175
      @dancerdon9175 6 років тому +4

      No lessons but I'm sure a few wouldn't have hurt. We called this dance the " California Two-Step" the development of which is generally credited to Buddy Schwimmer who danced on Bandstand for a time. We learned by doing and practice.

    Now if I were alive back then, this would have been "appointment TV" for me because 2 of my absolute faves were on TV that day, Stevie & Scooby. Doesn't get better than that! Buddy, keep these clips coming. I remember seeing this on VH1 in '96, I believe, and gagged at the whole thing, as this was the first time seeing this set & hearing the new theme song, (which is hot btw). For those curious about it, the theme is called "Bandstand Theme" by Mike Curb & The Waterfall, released on Forward Records in October of 1969. Thanks again for this clip AYCDTI!

      On September 12, '69, ABC aired, in broadcast order, nighttime Let's Make A Deal, a documentary on the 100th anniversary of college football narrated by Chris Schenkel titled What The Cheering Was All About, a rerun of Judd For The Defense (on its next-to-last week), and one of the last prime-time Dick Cavett Shows (he returned three months later in relief of Joey Bishop on late nights). Also of note: WKPT-19 in Kingsport, Tennessee, had just signed on as ABC's newest full-time affiliate, servicing the Tri-Cities area of NE TN/SW VA.

      Ok, here's what I understand about that CCR ep: I think the original master for the color videotape is partially destroyed, which is how the performance of "Green River" & one of the interviews exists in color. A clip of the color performance was used on one of the AB anniversary specials, but here's the link for the color interview, and you'll notice some on screen distortions that may back up my theory about the original color master tape being messed up: ua-cam.com/video/dy_A8ZhupUk/v-deo.html

      Hi Jean Lankton also at the blockbuster taping that weekend were Roni Menacker and Carl Ratcher (on the lower riser) as well as Robin Miller with Art Mikaelian, Frank Vanderpuil and Art's brother Rudy. Frank, Robin, Art and Rudy can be better seen in the Archies "Sugar Sugar" Top Ten footage at 3:05 ua-cam.com/video/hZUQ9miyHVQ/v-deo.html and if you don't blink you can see me and Karen in the front shadows at 3:16ish. Isn't it strange that Stevie Wonder never did "Bandstand" for the rest of his life after the 1960's although he appeared on every single American Bandstand Anniversary Special from 1972, 1977, 1982, 1985 (33 1/3) 1992, 1997 and the last in 2002. He also holds the Distinction of being The Only Motown Artist to do Duets with Two Boy Bands. 98 Degrees for Be True To Your Heart in The US for The Mulan Soundtrack and Blue from The UK. On episode 1 (Sept. 6, 1969) of the new season, the guest was the Gospel group, The Edwin Hawkins Singers. They performed "Oh Happy Day." Based on these anniversary clips and the AwardsShowNetwork clips, I know there are a lot of color episodes from the 60-80's, but unfortunately they are locked up in the vault at Dick Clark Productions. I really hope we will all get to see them, in their entirety, someday! Thanks for the reference and the question pogwo1968!
