While we all know now that "These Boots...." was the hit here, climbing to #1 next month and becoming the 6th most popular song of 1966, how would you have rated it back then? "These Boots..." will enter the Billboard charts next week at #74.
Akens’ “Slice of the Pie” never charted. I thought it had a good bassline, a nice “Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch” sorta sound and, well, you can dance to it. I give it a 77.
The Regulars dancing today - you can get good glimpses of Famous Hooks, Frank Vanderpuil, Peggy Waggoner, Debbie Sewell, Lauren Montgomery, Danny McClane and Sue Hipple.
    Brought you by @jthyme
Happy Holidays, thank you for for watching and see you next week!

Where else can you find the word same/samin' used as a verb? The r-a-r board here can be seen at the beginning of the T-Bones clip posted a year ago. The Jewel Akens song is not bad, should have at least made the Hot 100. His follow-up to Birds & Bees, Georgie Porgie might win the contest for follow-up that sounds most like its predecessor hit (along with the Reflections' Romeo & Juliet/Like Columbus Did).

✔️➕ Gary and Aaron. I’m phoning for an Uber Time Machine ride back to this mid-60’s era. Who didn’t know the lyrics to this Nancy Sinatra classic? Bandstand had finally settled into its Hollywood comfort zone by January 1966 with a solid compliment of “regulars”. Groovy man.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jewel Akens. "Birds & Bees" had a unique sound, but "Pie" is just too derivative of Motown. I'm surprised the Bandstand Kids didn't dig Nancy Sinatra's delivery. I liked "Boots" the moment I heard it - but, in 1966 I could've said the same thing about 100 other Top-40 Hits. The array of fantastic '60s songs is staggering!

The problem was nearly 2/3 of the nation were not able to the color telecasts due to the fact that half of the ABC affiliates only picked up the network as a secondary program source, and as a consequence, aired the programs on a week-old Kinescope delay in B/W, which in some rare cases continued even into the early seventies.
