yes me too. my female is huge and her tank is huge and I feed her crickets and worms and whatever I can find plus her dry food from the pet store. I love her. there are many people who are responsibel pet owners but they dont watch learning videos so think positively my friend.
I'm from the Philippines I have a huge slider roaming around inside my house 15 inches to be exact & weight around 3 kilos I never put her in the tank, I just let her roam around my house.
You really should have a heater no matter what. The turtle dock with the magnet stays totally out of water. The one with suction cups is not my preferred one either.
Yeah, dock needs to stay 100% dry. I have videos on my turtle tanks and really like the Penn Plax dock I have. As for heater, it depends on what species and where they are kept. For example, my turtles at my home are in my 'pet room', which always stays around 75F. I keep my house around 70F, but, the pet room has many heatlights for my pets which raise the room temp. But yes, for most owners, a heater set around 75F is a good idea.
Superb instructional video, clear and concise, just one point I would mention is that I believe the optimum position for Fluval U series filters is vertical but this one does appear to be working well, great filters if a little bit fierce on the output flow!😊👍✌👌

what if the turtle don't like to bask in the light that happen to my turtle , it will just jump in to the water and swim in to a different place in the tank .
Turtles that are basking turtles (like most pet turtles are) need a 100% dry basking are of proper temperature with UVB lighting. Is your basking are of proper temperature for your turtle species? Do you have UVB lighting? Is your tank a very large tank (40+ gallons)? Most pet turtles will need a 125 gallon or larger; however, even babies should have at least a 40 gallon, all properly setup. Filtration, water heater, basking area, basking light, uvb light, etc.. These animals have specific requirements which must be met for proper care. Sadly, turtles are some of the worst cared for pets. Most species of pet turtles should live 50+ years. Sadly, few make it past a year due to poor care. :(

Aquatic animal tanks should never be fully emptied and refilled. I never clean my turtle tank. You just need better filtration; and, make sure not to overfeed (most people feed turtles way too much).
When I use to have turtles my mother made me keep them in plastic bins. My parents wouldnt allow me to buy them a proper tank ): Had one for a few years around 5yrs old before bringing in another turtle. My turtle loves plants he can hide in and chill not just a total bare tank.. they actually don't need a big swimming area but only depth. Also having a screen lid or any lid prevents the light fully getting in..
Screen lid is perfectly fine. And they need a ton of space for swimming. Deep water and a wide and large tank. Most turtles will need well over 100 gallon tanks.

Interesting video. I've always wanted a turtle when I was a kid. Not sure I want one anymore but its still interesting and handy to know, alot more to it than I realized.
Very helpful thanks much for the vid. My old father just bought home an 10+ year old red eared slider from someone thinking he can just dump it in a small fish tank or release it anyway. Had to figure out how to take care of the fella and educate him about treating the animal right.
A friend from vet assist school got me a baby RES turtle and at the time we didn't know that it was illegal for people to see babies under 4 inches in one of those mini side road sales, ones that have hundreds of babies in tubs selling each for 5$. Again wasn't away it was illegal :(. Anyhow fast forward to about a year now still alive and well. Its very upsetting to see people put babies in little 1 gallon tanks :(. Right now he/she (Greebis) is in a 20 gallon tank but its a little over halfway filled (about 13 gallons filled out of 20 gallons) with a turtle dock and a nice basking light UVA and UVB light source :) I heard in the video that you suggested 10 gallons of water per inch? If this is the case then i would need to fill the tank? Because its measuring about 1 and 7/8ths. Love the video btw :) oh and also how fast do they normally grow?
LightWorker Labs 20 gallons is too small for a baby turtle even. A RES needs at least a 75 gallon, but, preferably 125 gallon or larger. Tank should be filled as full as possible with a 100% dry basking area with proper UVB lighting and basking temperature.
I have a painted turtle and the info that the store workers gave me was that I should fill the tank water up to it’s feet I added many small rocks and sand it’s tank is probably like 2 gallons I rlly want to fill the tank with water but idk how much heaters/filters are and I can’t find a basking thing for him
Do you QT your new turtles? OR do you treat with anything as a preventative? I have a fish room with 35 tanks connected to a central sump, I treat all the fish I touch with meds-Erythromycin, Ick X and Prazi and QT for a week, and never had an issue. What should I do for a Eastern Painted Turtle I am adopting next week?
I have a couple questions because I'm concidering getting a turtle 😊 If i were to put gravel at the bottom, if I used just normal outside gravel, would that be dangerous? Or is there specific gravel sold at stores that is safer for the turtle? What is a recommended filter to use? Do you have any specific filters you use that you could recommend for a beginner on turtle care? If I were to sometimes feed my turtle things like guppies and such, would I need live bait? And how would I feed the turtle? Would I drop the food in the water?
NEVER take a WILD LIVING animal and throw it in a cage! Those animals have their own life out there. If you want a pet, get one that was captive bred. RELEASE THOSE WILD TURTLES IMMEDIATELY!!!
I have a red nose slider.. I've had her for about a year. My aunt couldn't take care of her any more so she gave her to me. She was only like 2 inches and I got her a 30 gallon tank. But now she's 6 inches and still in the same tank. When I first got her, I held her a lot.. But I got more and more busy.. So I couldn't hold her any more.. I'm really sad to let her go but I know it's definitely the right decision
Lena Clark Can get at pretty much any pet store; however, they aren't great due to them not staying 100% dry Turtles need a 100% dry basking area of proper temperature for species and UVB lighting.
After watching this, I see I did a lot wrong with my pet turtles when I was young. I did have a big rock for them to bask on and a heat lamp, but I didn't know, and even the vet didn't mention the UVB lamp. I had to take them to the vet every couple of years for a Vitamin B shot. He just said turtles need it from time to time. :P
No animal should need shots or vitamins if you give them a proper cage setup and proper food. Vet should have asked more about your setup and food and adjusted so it was right. Some vets would rather get that money than tell you what to do properly though.
My dad picked up a tiny turtle in the back yard and brought it in the house for my mom back in the summer time. Now it is winter in Oklahoma and mom is sick and can not care for it. Will it kill it to put it outside this time of year?
No, it is not. An adult RES easily gets to 1 foot long. An adult RES should have over 100 gallon tank. Keeping an adult RES in anything under a 75 gallon tank is just torture. 75 gallon isn't even large enough, but, better than a 55! If you don't want to provide proper care to an animal, you shouldn't keep that animal. Turtles are aquatic animals that love to swim. There is no space to swim in that tiny of a tank. A single RES would be happy enough in a 125 gallon, but, a 175 gallon or larger is ideal for proper care. I also suggest you check out my newest turtle video. Here is the link. ua-cam.com/video/UeDIFn1Z0qM/v-deo.html
Although veggies are part of their diet, they need much more. Pellets are ok too. They should have some fresh (or pre killed frozen or freezed are ok too) seafood and insects. They need a variety.
No, not a normal bulb. Need proper basking (and water) temperatures, and, UVB lighting. Turtle will be fine at night. I suggest you check out my newer turtle video for more info: ua-cam.com/video/UeDIFn1Z0qM/v-deo.html
Oh my god... 10 turtles? For one, they will eat and kill all the fish in there in time. So, that is no good. Secondly, 10 turtles, in a 155?!?! For 10 turtles you probably need at least 1,000 gallons! This is horrible! I suggest you also watch my newer turtle video: ua-cam.com/video/UeDIFn1Z0qM/v-deo.html
I’ve had my turtles since I was 10 and now I’m 18 but I barely relized how much care they need and now I’m actually trying to invest money into them but I don’t have much do you think a 60 or. 75 gallon tank would work and they are not used to being dry they are inside all the time last week I started to realize how much I loved them and how bad I felt for leaving them in this 30 gallon tank for a long time with no likes and only one dock
Thank you for the turtles tips.. I have three baby turtles 🐢... They are rescued from the horrible streets of AL in California. I love these baby turtles soo much.. I really want to give them a much bigger tanks but couldn't Afford it since I'm still looking for a damm job here in California..
I have 2 baby ones and I have a tank for them also rocks too, we have a pond but in the pond there are adult turtles and big fish and those fish could eat the babys so I dont wanna put them in there with those things lol but omg these babies are just to adorable but when they start growing big enough I'll move them to the pond
My land turtle will not eat pellets... Only fruit veggies and insects... And occasionally I feed her grilled chicken and boiled eggs.... She loves those
I love your information you shared but he has nowhere close to a good enough environment for him to mentally be healthy. (Not meaning this hatefully) But for someone who knows so much you really haven't put much effort into giving him the real environment he needs. I see your other videos for other aquariums you have and how much effort you put in to those, I hope you did the same for this turtle after this video was filmed. Again, your information is great and you probably helped some beginners understand what they need to think about before getting a pet turtle.
I have to ask, does the new coppa law effect your channel? I have baby turtles that i have recorded from hatching to present. I want to share however if coppa effects creators channels i wont upload.
So I have all the basics down. Is there anything else I should know? I see some videos about cleaning their shells, do I need to do that? And if I add other creatures to the tank like shrimp , fish and a snail is that okay? They are all food but some of them can help keep my tank clean. Thanks :)
Hi can you tell us the purpose of a turtle on earth. Why are they protected I found a very large one on the side of a pond in the bush. Will it bite a human What do they eat.
Great video! I am looking into getting a mud turtle since they stay small I already have a 50 galloon tank for the baby I plan on getting. Your turtle is adorable! I want a res but don't have the room for the size tank they need when they grow ):
Thinking of adopting/saving an old turtle my relative saved but can't keep for too long. Thanks for giving me a good overview of what responsibility it would entail. Pretty sure he has a big tank but no dry basking area atm :(

may i ask where did you buy your tank? my red eared slider is looks like it is about the same size as yours and i need to save up and upgrade to a bigger tank.
just be carful with gravel my slider was eating hers and she got impacted which was a VERY big vet bill several hundreds of pounds BIG so i have just kept mine bare bottom since and would recomend that to anyone owning one of these animals
My sister has a large number of red and yellow eared sliders that she loves. Due to health and financial problems she is having a hard time taking care of them. We live in North Carolina and have been trying to find good homes or rescues to give them to but so far nobody wants them. They range in size from silver dollar to soccer ball and have been handled a lot so they don't bite. If you or anyone you know can give a good home to some or all of these turtles please let me know.
Yea, and no. No bright light at night naturally in nature. Also, I suggest you check out my newest turtle video. ua-cam.com/video/UeDIFn1Z0qM/v-deo.html RES are big turtles. Not great pets for most people. Need a 120 gallon tank (if you want to provide the bare minimum). 200+ gallons preferred.
Thank you! That was very helpful. I bought 2 of these turtles and the store owner lied to me about how big they will get. Now im prepared to either an indoor or outdoor set up eventually lol
I wana get the same stuff that u got but I don't wana get scammed, so can u tell me how much did the tank, filter and wooden plank thing cost u? Thanks
Glad to help. Make sure the tank is setup at least 2 weeks before getting your turtle. The tank water needs to cycle. During this time, check that you have proper UVB and basking temperature. They need a 100% dry basking area. Use a thermometer and make sure everything is perfect. A single turtle (depending on species) is going to need at least a 75 gallon tank. So, you will need to decide what type of turtle you want, and get the proper tank size. Something like a painted turtle or musk turtle is fine in a 75gallon. Something like a red ear slider needs at least a 125 gallon. The tank setup will be expensive, probably around $400 or more once you get the tank, filter, heater, lighting, etc..

LightWorker Labs 20 gallons is too small for a baby turtle even. A RES needs at least a 75 gallon, but, preferably 125 gallon or larger. Tank should be filled as full as possible with a 100% dry basking area with proper UVB lighting and basking temperature.
U have a good basking set up , high set up. Where did u buy it ?
Amazon
Where did you get your basking area?
Amazon. Search for "Penn Plax Turtle Dock". Make sure to only get the largest size.
I have a couple questions because I'm concidering getting a turtle 😊
If i were to put gravel at the bottom, if I used just normal outside gravel, would that be dangerous? Or is there specific gravel sold at stores that is safer for the turtle?
What is a recommended filter to use? Do you have any specific filters you use that you could recommend for a beginner on turtle care?
If I were to sometimes feed my turtle things like guppies and such, would I need live bait? And how would I feed the turtle? Would I drop the food in the water?
Succulent Beans don’t do gravel. The turtle can eat it which leads to death
Where did you get your basking rock from. I’ve been trying to find one, but I’m only finding ones with suction cups :(
Amazon
Look up Penn Plax turtle dock
What are good tanks to buy
I got a couple that I found and put them in a fish tank. They are doing great 👍
NEVER take a WILD LIVING animal and throw it in a cage!
I like the wood basking where did u get that at my sons turtles needs one!
Do you have an update??? Thank you so much for knowing proper turtle care and knowing this tank wasn't helping him live his best life.
I got one when i was like 5. I got it for free from a MAN who was taking care of him. I named her Nicoleta calling her Nico and shes My fave pet :3

A 55 gallon tank with the right filler system is fine. The heat light is right and they do need a dry area.
I am getting a pet turtle soon so I am looking for the right video😊🐢
You found one :) Be sure to check my channel. I have many more turtle care videos too.
@@earthling1984 ok
Good video. What would you suggest feeding a narrow bridged musk turtle and what size tank? I want one but they're rare as hell lol
If I had pet turtle, if it’s a boy, I would name him Franklin turtle
Where do they sell turtles at
I getting a short necked turtle 90 gallons and I was wondering , can u only feed it vegetables or do u need to give it pellets?
Although veggies are part of their diet, they need much more. Pellets are ok too. They should have some fresh (or pre killed frozen or freezed are ok too) seafood and insects. They need a variety.
@@earthling1984 ohh ok thanks
As a treat give some crumbled hard boiled egg
How big should a painted turtle cage get?
Hi just a random question where did you get the filter for your tank? I have one that is way to noisy
Pet store or Amazon.
What is heat bulb? Is that our normal bulb?
At night time how turtle come on basking area? Can he see in dark?
No, not a normal bulb. Need proper basking (and water) temperatures, and, UVB lighting. Turtle will be fine at night.
I suggest you check out my newer turtle video for more info: ua-cam.com/video/UeDIFn1Z0qM/v-deo.html
Where do you buy your tank?
I have a 155 gallon tank with 10 turtles and 23 fishes , one is a soft shell turtle. They all fit just fine. Even if they do grow bigger
How your turtles doing?
I’ve had my turtles since I was 10 and now I’m 18 but I barely relized how much care they need and now I’m actually trying to invest money into them but I don’t have much do you think a 60 or. 75 gallon tank would work and they are not used to being dry they are inside all the time last week I started to realize how much I loved them and how bad I felt for leaving them in this 30 gallon tank for a long time with no likes and only one dock
God bless you all 💕
Very clear explanation
She loves those
this is good to know! I am planning on getting a turtle!
I suggest fill your tank up completely get that basking area out of there and make one that sits on top of the tank use egg crate
As I said in the video, this is not his permanent tank.
Again, your information is great and you probably helped some beginners understand what they need to think about before getting a pet turtle.
my parents say i cant have a turtle... but they are my favorite animals!!!!!!
NICE AND INFORMATIVE VIDEO. ALTOUGH SOME TURTLES LIKE REVEES ARE NOT VERY GOOD SWIMMER AND SHOULD NOT HAVE A HIGHWATER LEVEL
You took a wild animal home? Only keep captive bred animals as pets. If you did take that wild animal home, you need to release it immediately.
Great video! I am looking into getting a mud turtle since they stay small I already have a 50 galloon tank for the baby I plan on getting. Your turtle is adorable! I want a res but don't have the room for the size tank they need when they grow ):
Where did you get your large baskin area?
Amazon. Penn Plax Turtle Dock
What's the smallest species of painted turtle?
Thinking of adopting/saving an old turtle my relative saved but can't keep for too long. Thanks for giving me a good overview of what responsibility it would entail. Pretty sure he has a big tank but no dry basking area atm :(
Saved from where? Needs a proper dry basking area immediately.
@@earthling1984 Her co-worker's daughter grew up, moved out and neither wanted to keep him I think -.- He seemed energetic, but I'll shoot her a message about the platform asap
I have all the things you talked about but the bad ones like the basking one I have the one you said gets wet and the tank is about 60 gallons and the food I feed them all these little worms
may i ask where did you buy your tank? my red eared slider is looks like it is about the same size as yours and i need to save up and upgrade to a bigger tank.
If you have a RES you need a 100 gallon tank or larger. I got my tank just from local pet store.
Earthling1984 thank you!
Does the basking area not get wet when the turtles track water onto it?
It dries of course. Turtles need 100% dry basking area.
Hey I’m planning on getting a turtle any name ideas or like any recommendation like what tank or what filter what lightbulb anything
just be carful with gravel my slider was eating hers and she got impacted which was a VERY big vet bill several hundreds of pounds BIG so i have just kept mine bare bottom since and would recomend that to anyone owning one of these animals
I like the net you have where did you purchase it
Hey man do aquatic turtles like red ear sliders and yellow belly sliders sleep under water? And also do they require a night light at night to sleep?
Yea, and no. No bright light at night naturally in nature. Also, I suggest you check out my newest turtle video. ua-cam.com/video/UeDIFn1Z0qM/v-deo.html
RES are big turtles.
Thanks for the tips I'm getting a terrapin and this was helpful
+1 sub
Awesome! Be sure to watch my newest turtle video! ua-cam.com/video/UeDIFn1Z0qM/v-deo.html
I wana get the same stuff that u got but I don't wana get scammed, so can u tell me how much did the tank, filter and wooden plank thing cost u? Thanks
Hey i just bought that turtle stand and I'm having problems with it sticking to the bottom the cups stay but they fall off real easy
Thank you very much my mom and dad are planning to give me a turtle so im glad I knew this before I get one :)
