@SmoovCat yesss I love that they live for many years!!🥰 there’s the thing tho I hope I’m doing things right. I’m a first time turtle owner and didn’t know anything about how to care for one I’ve been investing all there is to know since I got my sweet Leonardo 🐢❤️
We've had red eared sliders since I was 4. We started with two, but one passed away a year ago. My parents neglect the one we have left, and now that I am an adult, I have decided to take his care into my own hands. This video was very helpful, and I can't thank you enough :)
I'm so happy I found you, Turtle Girl! My cat found a baby slider (2" long) in our screened in pool patio. Don't know how he got there. That was 5 years ago. "Ninja" is now 7" long & we are on our 4th tank. He loves his 70 gallon tank. He's super sociable & comes to the glass to greet our family & friends. But I feel he & I have a special connection😊 My husband & I are 75, so we have willed him to my son. Thanks for your great videos!❤
To build on what she said, I still have the red-eared sliders I got in 1994. I love my turtles, but often don't recommend them as pets for your kids unless you're willing to own them yourself.
I was supposed to be “turtle sitting” a slider for two weeks, ended up keeping her, knowing NOTHING about turtles, I quickly realized she had shell rot, was in a 20 gallon tank that was WAY too small for her, couldn’t fit on her basking area… now I have a slider because I refused to give her back. Now she has a much much bigger tank, a proper basking area, proper food, and the shell rot is treated. Thank you for your page!!
@@oSamiSrzo actually no. They gave her up because they knew they couldn’t adequately care for her anymore. I was willing to take her in and had to ability to care for her. They rescued her from someone who literally stole her as a baby from a pond and didn’t want her, and then realized it was a huge responsibility as she got older. Nothing wrong with any of that.
We got our red ear slider at petco and my husband had a painted turtle when we got married so we knew the just of taking care of them our red ear slider (Gizmo) lol begs and comes to me when I have food he allows me to hold him And pet his head and under his neck my husband however he opens his mouth hisses at my husband 😂 we love our little guy! Love all of your videos!!!
That’s a cute little poem! It’s going to stick in my head! I’ll say it about my turtles! I’m not first I’m not last But when the food drops in I sure swim fast!
I have two males together for 7 years never attacked eachother. I just witnessed an accidental snap at the others front foot only once while feeding. They love eachother and sometimes do a red ear slider dance with eachother.
Omg mine too except I think mine’s a female and male ( idk their a baby but the breeder said that but now I think they are same gender) and they do the same thing
@@kfc_heroes Can’t tell until they mature. I bought my boys as “mix hatchlings” but ended up with two males. Males do it with each other to assert dominance. Usually the bigger guy wins as default.
Yes mine go face to face and do this thing with their hands. Like dancing … it’s great to watch. I video it all the time like what are they doing??? It’s like 5 very fast up and down waves then lift their arms and repeat. Wish I could upload the video of them here.
My wife recently came home with two red eared slider hatchlings to surprise our kids. A very sweet surprise, but unfortunately no idea what she got us into when getting them. Either way, they're home now and I'm doing as much research I can to make sure we can take care of them. Although this video is a couple years old, it's been a huge help. I just didn't realize the scale of what's needed to take care of these animals.... and we have two. Need to figure out spacing for either two tanks, or one huge one. Especially after finding out the sex of both of them. Everyone, wish me luck!
I got surprised with a baby red eared slider yesterday and this information helped a lot thank you. Also it's hysterical seeing a little hatchling in a 20 gallon tank lmfao.
i was at a covered bridge in New Hampshire, and a couple red eared were sitting on a rock sun bathing. I had seen them at the pet store but never in a river
If it was a pair of red eared sliders--there are a bunch of turtles in the northeast that can look pretty similar--they're invasive and drive out native species by taking habitat and food. Probably originated from someone not wanting their pet turtle anymore. It's really unfortunate. :(
Wow so excited to watch all your videos. I have had my red eared slider for... idk 15-20 years? started as a hatchling. Moved from PA->OH->AZ->UT-> and where ever life will take us! She is quite a diva.
I am SO glad I came across your channel. I have spent all day and night doing research on my little red-eared slider and this has helped me so much. I feel much more confident in caring for her, and the turtle kit was also very helpful. Thank you very much!
Good job with the video! Had my turtle for over 15 years. Although... she destroyed nearly ALL of my fish. Including cichlids and super fast smaller fish. Pleco was the only one that lasted 10 years in the tank with her but he had a stressful life.
Greatttttt I feel terrible 😞 I’ve been doing it alllllll wrong 😢my poor baby 🐢 !!!! Thank you sooooo much for sharing. You have possibly saved her life.
Great video!! I have had my girl for 36 yrs. I don’t know how old she is because she has not grown very much if at all. I bought her from a pet store for my son. She is mine now. I love her so much!!! 🐢❤️
You forgot to mention in your basking section, that they must have artificial sunlight bulbs(full uva/uvb rays) for the health of the turtle...very important!
Around 6:35 seconds in she talks about it. And you do want both one heats the other helps them see and gives keeps their shells healthy. In a short way to say it.
Thank you for this I'm going to fig deeper I just got a rescue slider, mine ate greens we gave him. He is doing good and this video completely helped us out
I have 2 eastern painted coming to me tomorrow. I have the tank all set up and looking good. I have been watching your videos to get ready. Thank you very much
I found two painted turtles in a mud “puddle/pond” so I put them both in the tank since they were already together. They’re doing great. The little one chills on top of the bigger one.
Wow! This guide is great! I have a Yellow Bellied Slider, (Similar to the Red Eared Slider-) she's around 2 or 3, and she's doing great. I personally have a fish option that has worked for me is the Buenos Aires Tetra. They're schooling fish (I have 4, but I reccomend more if the tank is larger than a 15 gal-), they live in the same temperature water as Red Eared Sliders, and they're fast and small. My turtle did try to eat them at first, but she warmed up to them, and they swim all around eachother now.
Have had my Eastern Painter Speedy for 30 years. Definitely didnt know much about them at 5 yrs old. Been in small tanks with not enough water or even light. Ive since learned a lot and amd in the process of redoing the tank yet again. I know it may have been rough but he's still kickin . I would love to know how old he really is.
I can't thank you enough for ALL your informative videos. I really wanted to get a turtle but I didn't want to stick it in an empty 20 gallon tank and call it good. NOT good!! LOL But the more research I did, the more confused and worried I got. Go figure right?! So I slowed down, went back to the basics, compared your videos with a couple other youtube turtle owners I could trust and after months of research I am finally the proud momma of 2 hatchling Pink Belly Sidenecks. It's your fault TurtleGirl. and I will forever be grateful for your inspiration, knowledge and willingness to spend countless hundreds of hours helping us be the best turtle parents we can be.
This was a very helpful video. I bought a small aquarium (10 gallon) from Facebook market yesterday and saw a slider (about 6-8 inches) being kept in another 10 gallon. I had an empty 55 at home and offered to take the turtle off their hands.
Watching this cause my mom foolishly bought a turtle for my sister, and as A older brother who doesnt want my sister sad I am learning to keep it best So thank you Im trying my best
a baby read eared slider just came to my backyard mostly to bask because of the texas heat and when I saw the poor baby was all dried up I put a little water in a box and some rocks for the time being and kept out in the sun but obvi that's not gonna work so I'm looking to upgrade my habitat
I’m getting back into turtles again found a hatchling res and have set up my old 120gallon tank for him and needed a refresher and this was helpful! But I do need to say when I had turtles before I had 16 in this tank at once! 9 juvenile res 2 adult res 1 Mississippi map 2 musk and 2 painted turtles and they all were great friends and never showed any aggression I guess it’s just in who your turtles are!
thanks for the great playlist! I have learned so much from watching your videos The Turtle Girl! i was just told that i can get a Turtle! just have to do my research on the turtle and save up now!
Thank you Teacher #TurtleGirl . You are Assume ! My Turtle is Shellie 12yrs old , 10 inches red ear 80 gal tank be mostly free roam in my Home & yard .
The lake in the middle of my neighborhood is full of painted turtles and snappers...been catching them for almost 40yrs...as a kid I’d catch them as babies, keep them a couple weeks to learn about them, then set them free...I have one named Sampson that I found injured on the rd when he was a baby...he’s now 30yrs old and going strong
I recently got 2 female red eared sliders about 2 months ago! They are about 2 inches in length and I have them in a 75 gallon and they are doing so awesome! They are so active and healthy! You’re videos were a lifesaver! I swear I’ve watched them all 10 times before getting my babies!
please answer pls- are there different care types for the different painted turtles? like for eastern painted turtle u need different care tips and for wester u need other care tips or all are same?
I just got a eastern painted turtle like a week ago and he’s just chill as hell and barely moves a lot but he’s cool! I’m scared I’ll be bad at keeping em healthy and enjoying his life.
You’re fabulous!!! I love what you bring up that many of these turtles because their wild areas are so wide/diverse, that they can survive and thrive in a range of habitat. You’re so educated and you present the material directly and efficiently! Best turtle video!! Thanks!!
You are so passionate about turtles and reptiles, and it’s so cute and fascinating to watch and hear you talk about them. Just found one of your videos , was hooked, and subscribed. I started binge watching your videos. I have a red eared slider. Trying to vamp up my care and learn more about my turtle! Came to the right channel for it. Thank you so much for your knowledge and help! :)
Thank you I have a red slider who is eight years old I was pretty young when we got him He used to be a family pet but my family just gave it to me now I am learning how to take care of it
hi I’ve had two sliders for about 6 months and I’ve been trying to do research on proper care but it seems every where i go to look someone tells me something different and i can’t get a solid how to on how to take care of these turtles they are driving me crazy with the smell and i just can’t seem to do the right research. sorry this is so scrambled i’m in a bit of a panic right now and hoping you can help.
OMG you're a life-saver. I've had my red-eared slider for 4 years now and he's healthy as can be b/c I've learned so much from your videos. Thanks so much. I have one question: do I have to cut my male turtle's claws? They're kind of long, but it's never bothered him :/ Thanks!
You can use dechlorinator to remove harmful chemicals from tap water. Only reason I haven't made a video yet is because recently some studies came out saying that there are potentially harmful things in water conditioner that could bs unhealthy for turtles and I'm not sure how true it is, but I wouldn't want to promote dechlorinator and then find it could be harmful.
I get clean water of a water well where u fill up a 5 Gallon jug and use that. That water is clear clean try that I have 2 5 gallons and fill up a 20 gallon so I make 2 trips
The Turtle Girl another method of dechlorinating Water is the off gassing method! 24 hours in a separate container with the biggest air stone you can get in the bottom of the container! The air stone creates more surface agitation increasing the gas exchange and removing the chlorine in the process! I know several large scale fish keepers who use this method to remove chlorine instead of chemical dechlorinater.
Hey I dont know what to do my turtle (a yellow belly still small turtle) imight have shell rot, well I've never seen shell rot before but his shell is not black anymore in spots but white like he lost his shell skin and that part is thin compared to the rest it's the part next to the head it's really worrying me but my parents dont care help. I know somthing is wrong!
This was so helpfull thanks! Do I still need to feed my turtles if they are begging for food even after I just fed them? They give me the idea that im underfeeding them😂 pls help! 🤣

I've had 2 males were given to me as babies for 15 years. I kept them together for over ten years before I saw any aggressive behavior toward each other. I watched it escalate over the next few years, but was reluctant to separate them because they've always known each other, and not much else... One day I watched one take a chunk out of the other's neck. I separated them immediately and never put them back together. Luckily it wasn't too deep and he was able to heal from it, I'm so grateful it wasn't more serious.
You’re awesome, thank you! We’re babysitting but wanted to make sure we did everything right and now we’re considering adopting a rescue turtle (is that a thing?). Anyway, great work and thank you!
I have 10 red eared sliders living in a big fresh water reservoir with basking areas and a variety of fish so they can hunt as well. Some of them are over 30 years old. I bought three small ones for my daughter as pets. Now after all those years they’ve grown like 10 inches long. So I’ve known them for half my life. I’m 60 now. The rest are adopted by us throughout the years.
Thank you so much! This is awesome! In about a year I am getting a lemon lime albino slider and a red ear slider this was so helpful. I am currently doing all my homework since I haven't owned one in many years. If anyone has in helpful tips or comments please leave them below.
I rescued my painted turtle 6 years ago. I was raking my lawn and what felt like a stone hit my leg, I looked down to see a little turtle the size of a quarter upside down on his back. It was late in the fall and was close to snowing and I was concerned when I was 14 that he was gonna die, so he became my turtle. His name is Arty.
My little southern painted is big enough to move to my outdoor pond and he loves it and when I take home out some times to walk on the grass if my dogs are laying down he will crawl on their backs and sunbath with them
I got a baby painted turtle about a year ago and started him off with a 10 gallon when he was the size of a quarter basically. Once he started swimming more I found a free 75 gallon tank that is now his forever home he absolutely loves it. It was funny watching him at the begging he was so small. We would loose him in it and not be able to see him from a distance since he was so small. But he’s growing Nicely into it
i actually have 2 RES in one tank, i’ve had one for almost 2 years & she’s very friendly & social but tends to be pretty aggressive with anything she thinks could be food. i was worried when i got my second turtle but they get along great!! i am thinking i’ll need a tank upgrade soon though
@@TheTurtleGirl i know they will! (-: just spent 3 hours yesterday cleaning, adding river rocks & plants, & setting up their above tank basking platform. im in love with the setup but im kinda stumped because my water is full to the very top, but isnt reaching the minimum water level of the basking area somehow. i dont think my turtles will be able to get up there /-:
I know this is an older video, but I figured it was the best one to ask my question. I’ve had my res for about 3 1/2 months and I’ve been feeding him in the tank. However, I’d like to start feeding him outside of the aquarium. I tried once and he wouldn’t eat. Is it too late? If not, do you have any suggestions?
I'd say it's never too late. It just takes time, patience, and sometimes a little bribery (worms or dried shrimp) or trickery (scented pellets with tuna water) ;)
Hi Turtle Girl. Love the video. We just got a red ear slider and we wanted to know what kind of tank and setup it is that you have in the video. Thanks in advance and I look forward to seeing more of your videos.
You helped me get my midland Smidge to eat when I first brought him home 3 years ago...u told me to soak his pellets in tuna juice, and I was so delighted when it worked.! Now he’s in a 75 gal tank, and eats anything I put in front of him- including my fingers! 😜Anyway, great , thorough vid!
My baby red eared slider is Constantly begging for food and turns away from one pellet but eat the same type of pellet in a different spot of his tank ,but he totally melts my heart because he is adorable
Thank you for this video so much and the pinned comment I'm getting a red eared slider turtle soon 👍 🐢 and now I can be prepared for his care. Thanks a lot! 🥺 🙏.
Hi sorry to bother you, firstly thank you so much for all this information! My uncle saw a painted turtle get dropped off at the side of the road by its owners. My uncle gave it to me to take care of, so I've been doing research and that's how I came across your videos, they are all really helpful, so thank you. I need some advice, my turtle isn't really eating a lot, whenever I try to feed him by hand he'll swim away, so I usually leave the food floating in his tank, but he'll usually only eat a little bit of it. I initially thought it was cause he's stressed out by the new environment environment/tank, but I'm not sure
Thank you for the info! I'm getting a western painted turtle by next week and was thinking if it is a must to get a partner for him. Now my question is answered. Thank you 😃
The thing with fish tank mates is kinda true but i bought my 2 red eared sliders together they grew up together and they dont fight and they get along very well

I’m not first
I’m not last
But when the food drops in
I sure swim fast!
I've seen this before :V
It’s stolen but it’s still good I’m gonna say this to my dog
I’m not first
I’m not last
But when my dog runs
I sure run fast
I have two males together for 7 years never attacked eachother. I just witnessed an accidental snap at the others front foot only once while feeding. They love eachother and sometimes do a red ear slider dance with eachother.
Oh brilliant, brilliant
Omg mine too except I think mine’s a female and male ( idk their a baby but the breeder said that but now I think they are same gender) and they do the same thing
@@kfc_heroes Can’t tell until they mature. I bought my boys as “mix hatchlings” but ended up with two males. Males do it with each other to assert dominance. Usually the bigger guy wins as default.
@@j6302 oh ok thank you for the info!
Everyone, wish me luck!
just got my southern painted turtle!! your videos really helped me give it the best life possible haha 💞
Happy to hear that :)
That’s my favorite turtle

I got surprised with a baby red eared slider yesterday and this information helped a lot thank you. Also it's hysterical seeing a little hatchling in a 20 gallon tank lmfao.
You’re so unproblematic, I love it
I am actually getting a red ear slider so this is super helpful!
Good luck!
I got two yesterday and I’m very stressed and confused 😭

You’re so helpful turtle girl 🎉 thanks !
I just got a Yellow-Bellied Slider. I’m so obsessed, I rush home everyday ☺️🎉
Mr. Tut 🐢 🥰
i was at a covered bridge in New Hampshire, and a couple red eared were sitting on a rock sun bathing.
I just got a slider turtle today! Named him Trench after my favorite TØP album. Love him so much
Best fish I've kept with my RES are TIGER BARBS. Fast, reactive, relatively small and just awesome to look at too.
I was thinking of trying a school of those at some point for sure!
Can you diy with a bin and pvc for a basking spot? It looked like one of the cuts had that! Around 6:22
I just rescued a baby red eared slider from my pool and asked my friend to look for a video, this was really helpful, thank God she found it
Wow so excited to watch all your videos. I have had my red eared slider for... idk 15-20 years? started as a hatchling. Moved from PA->OH->AZ->UT-> and where ever life will take us! She is quite a diva.
wow that's amazing Molly!!
CanDIEland I thought she did say “Use UVB and heat bulbs”. Not trying to be rude, just curious, is there a difference?
@@mxdelyn1353 no its the same you just need a heat/basking and a uvb lamp :)
:P ok thanks! do you know if theres a difference between uva/uvb? do you need both?
Dandy Gamer alright thanks! i think i have a heat and uvb in my turtle tank
Around 6:35 seconds in she talks about it. And you do want both one heats the other helps them see and gives keeps their shells healthy. In a short way to say it.
Thank you for this I'm going to fig deeper I just got a rescue slider, mine ate greens we gave him. He is doing good and this video completely helped us out
Do you have a youtube page of your own on rescues?
My turtle did try to eat them at first, but she warmed up to them, and they swim all around eachother now.
hi, i love your content so much, i have 2 red eared sliders and your content helps me out with them.
Watching this cause my mom foolishly bought a turtle for my sister, and as A older brother who doesnt want my sister sad I am learning to keep it best
So thank you Im trying my best
a baby read eared slider just came to my backyard mostly to bask because of the texas heat and when I saw the poor baby was all dried up I put a little water in a box and some rocks for the time being and kept out in the sun but obvi that's not gonna work so I'm looking to upgrade my habitat
Do u only need uvb bulb and heat bulbs in the basking area or the whole tank if it’s for baby turtles? (Getting a southern baby turtle soon 😄😄)
thanks for the great playlist! I have learned so much from watching your videos The Turtle Girl! i was just told that i can get a Turtle! just have to do my research on the turtle and save up now!
CONGRATS ON 20K!!!! They grow up so fast :,)

Very helpful. I have 3 red ear slider and theyre together since theyre still babies. 😊 😍
Thank God for this video I just had a red eared that's missing it's two back legs dumped on me
I just got a eastern painted turtle like a week ago and he’s just chill as hell and barely moves a lot but he’s cool! I’m scared I’ll be bad at keeping em healthy and enjoying his life.

I love your vids, if you do more like this, can you do a stinkpot musk? I’m looking into getting one and am anxious to get everything right.
if and when I get a stinkpot, I'd definitely consider making a guide. :)
Stinkpots are SO cute!!
could you do a video about the water you put in tanks? i was told to use tap water with certain chemicals but could you explain that? thx!
jeepers you use tap water and then a water conditioner to dechlorinate the water. ( prime is a good conditioner to use)
Thank you!
Do I still need to feed my turtles if they are begging for food even after I just fed them? They give me the idea that im underfeeding them😂 pls help! 🤣
HC I’m not so sure you probably have figured it out by now but they need enough food to live but not so much
Sloth Show Yes! I sold them😳😂
Omg that part where they get light was a smart idea they go on and off when ever they want to
My turtle has not basked for 6 months but I set up a camera in the room last week and I realised how much they spent their time basking

But he’s growing Nicely into it
Thank you for this! I am about to get a turtle and your videos are helpings lots.
I'm so glad to hear that :)
@@TheTurtleGirl omggg you replied!!
just randomly found one of these little guys at my house i wanna take care of it now :)
i actually have 2 RES in one tank, i’ve had one for almost 2 years & she’s very friendly & social but tends to be pretty aggressive with anything she thinks could be food. i was worried when i got my second turtle but they get along great!! i am thinking i’ll need a tank upgrade soon though
That's great to hear Natasha! I'm sure they'd love an upgrade ;) ;)
This helped me so much get a basis of what I need
Hi Turtle Girl. Love the video. We just got a red ear slider and we wanted to know what kind of tank and setup it is that you have in the video. Thanks in advance and I look forward to seeing more of your videos.
I rescued one red slider and kept in a plastic box with rocks and water. Feeding it cat food for last 2-3 days. Thanks for your comprehensive video
Hope the video helped!
Love your videos. You have helped me so much in taking care of my big boy! Thank you!
Love every thing you just said. I have saved nine sliders last night from being eaten and I needed to know about them thanks.

Thank you 😃
The thing with fish tank mates is kinda true but i bought my 2 red eared sliders together they grew up together and they dont fight and they get along very well
Thank you so much for the video! I'm totally new to turtle care, and this was a great, comprehensive start. Subscribed!
