What’s unusual is this being recorded and becoming public. Managers still have to discipline players, but they prefer to keep things “in house”. One practice that the best coaches/managers do today is not use the press to criticize individual players. This is to minimize embarrassment and humiliation of the player. Robert Masina no, but managers who are liked by their players do tend to get more out of them, and Leyland was generally both liked and respected by his players. And as was pointed out, Leyland and Bonds were normally on good terms both before and after this incident. Both men could be hotheaded and things boiled over on this day. But the two men are supposedly overall still on good terms today.
Now that's management. I love how he puts Barry in check.
Barry Bonds, @ the 92 Allstar game in San Diego made me one happy little kid! He generously put his arm around me after I "Found My Way Into The Players Parking Lot", laughed signed my ball.....and then had others do the same. After with a chuckle he told me to run before I was caught in the players parking lot. I love Barry...one of those moments a kid never forgets

This argument is tired. Everyone knows that he was great without them. But he would not have both the all time and single season HR records without them.

Leyland would be called a racist for this in today's screwed up world.
@@ragingbull154 Why? There’s nothing racist about this. Even Barry Bonds and the other players know this. This didn’t happen in the 1950’s. Leyland is still in MLB, working for Detroit, and he retired from managing less than a decade ago. He could easily get a job managing, should he wish to.
What’s unusual is this being recorded and becoming public. Managers still have to discipline players, but they prefer to keep things “in house”. One practice that the best coaches/managers do today is not use the press to criticize individual players. This is to minimize embarrassment and humiliation of the player. What’s changed is the 24 hour sports radio and cable news coverage. This saturation coverage tends to turn a verbal rebuke into a major story, which doesn’t help the player or the team.
